This video is so fun! It's like reliving the show. Thanks for all the pen closeups. It was filling in with so many people Saturday morning that I had trouble getting close enough to do a proper look. In the future, I will try and do the weekend pass. I was fortunate enough to walk up to Gena when she wasn't with someone and have her tune a nib for me. She is so lovely and a fantastic craftsman. I was happy to say a quick hello to you. I got shy seeing you in person. I hope to get to the San Francisco show someday once my daughter is out of college. Hi Marie! So glad you were able to get your pen tuned by Gena! They work so fast that I’m sure that happens quite a bit so I’m glad you got that lucky moment with them! Remind me which moment during the show that we met? Was it at the auction area or near the Carolina pen co table. XD I remember every moment someone said hi but I need to put name to face again. Hi Lao! Finally got a chance to watch this…awesome job on video! Great to see you come out of your shell and talk to vendors. Loved seeing all the pens! But my fav part of video is how you talked about your experience from the pen show activities to the city sights. Glad you met my Pen Sista the Doc…thank you for sharing your experience! I’m glad you got all your specialty grinds. Now I am interested in that Pilot Custom 845 pen and the VP Raden every time you talk about it! 😂 Take care my friend!
Yes, Doc recognized me right away, BUT ALSO, I happened to feel her energy in the air at that moment as I was at the Atlas booth. I'm like, something about this woman in front of me...her aura, and then I looked at inks on a shelf and she turned to me and said, "LAO! I knew I'd spot you first!" Hahaha. She's got so much spunk, I love it. I can't wait to meet you both in person someday! The Custom 845 is a lovely pen - definitely lighter than the 823 and very nice, but the nib is stiff as the 823. The CUSTOM URUSHI however...damn that nib is crazy. LOL, not practical for every day writing, but very interesting and lovely all the same. So happy you had a great time watching my adventure xD I wished it could reach more folks, but I think that expectation will have to go towards the bigger shows, like the SF one!! LOL, Hi Kanzee, thank you for sharing your thoughts on my video and watching through the whole thing! At least, seeing most of it xD I definitely would have taken more writing sample videos but it was a smaller show and not a lot of people allowed me to test write. And the platinum table I did do a test writing of all the nib sizes, but I think I'll share those writing samples in another video since I didn't do video clips of it. I should be able to do a lot more writing samples of the pens I see at the San Francisco Pen Show! And the ink bottle is indeed beaded! It's like 300-500 little beads all throughout the exterior side of the bottle. Super pretty artistry with a great ink to boot! I am a Family Therapist by day, so I would say I have that relationship building skill down ;) Tom B really was so sweet, I loved listening to his knowledge of Platinum and Pelikans. I drove all the way to Chicago LOL! So there was no way my pens could have had any issues xD so I was exaggerating there. I did have them in my suitcase, so I was just hoping it wasn't bouncing about in there during the car ride. And yeah, I think you'd really love the Pelikan M800 Green Demo. It's super beautiful!
Loved this video! I'm so glad everything worked out and you had a great time. I know it can be hard with all the planning and the level of anticipation and wanting everything to live up to the hype in your mind. Really enjoyed the snippets at the pen show. It's so great when the vendors take the time to share their knowledge with you. Glad you're happy with your the grinds and tuning of your pens. That was really interesting to hear about that one odd sailor. I wouldn't think it would be possible to revert back after the tuning. I think that was a great point to emphasize about custom grinding less expensive pens. As long as you love your pen it doesn't matter the price point.
Hi Christine, yes, I think that it didn't hurt to go back to JC and ask him to look at it again and make sure it was good since I already paid and used up his time during my appointment. I doubt this kind of thing happens often where the issue comes back after the nibmeisters fixed it, but it also really helps to have a point of reference for the types of pens/nibs that work for you so the nibmeisters can work with that knowledge in hand. So going back to JC to fix the issue really made the trip for my 3 pens a successful and happy one. And yeah, glad that point about custom grinding any favorite pen regardless of price resonated with you, too. Thank you for watching through such a long video xD
Hello Christine! Metal has a certain amount of “memory” for where it was bent. The work often resting between the bend point and origin. If Lao is accustomed to firm tines supporting each other then the splayed tines might have been pushed back out alignment with ease after already being compromised the first time. But ordinarily: no, not something that happens everyday. And yes, thank you, not just grail pens but… 𝒜𝓁𝓁 𝓷𝓲𝓫𝓼 𝓌𝑒𝓁𝒸𝑜𝓂𝑒! 🧡✒️🪡
@@KenchanKraftsVery happy to hear that all three pens were a success for you! 🙌 And you’re absolutely correct. You were very much welcomed to return for follow up nib TLC at Chicago.
Thanks so much for catching my show recap!! I figured I should commentate a bit for each footage I had but it wasn’t structured at all lol. I hope it is a nice video to listen and watch in the background for folks since it’s a long recap! Can’t wait to see your Dutch pen Show videos!
Thanks, Lela! :D A lot of the videos are sort of biased as they are brands I know of or interested in. Some are new to me, though, so hopefully I covered enough of a range of pens for everyone! :D So nice meeting you, too, thank you so much for all the little gifts!
Right?! Brown Black was so classy and beautiful! I definitely want it now and I'm happy with it being in my wish list manifestation journal haha. I've manifested 2 of the 5 pens I shared on the wishlist video, but one of them I will be taking off (as it costs 970 in the resale market). The Pelikan Black/White is so beautiful. Very elegant and classy! Definitely one to watch out for!
I have been looking forward to your walkthrough! I really love how you have videos of the pens from so many vendors (especially the ones that I have not heard of). Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ll make sure to say hi at the SF Pen Show! 🌸
Woohoo! Yes, see you at the SF Pen Show. I have yet to put all the vendors' names and links (if applicable) in my description box for everyone, but hopefully the captions in the video will help for whichever vendors people are interested in. Thank you for waiting patiently for my walkthrough video! Hope it was worth it haha ^_^
This was great and it sounds like you had big pen fun! I haven’t been to a pen show yet - this kind of video helps it feel less intimidating and also gives me ideas of how to prepare myself. 😻 thanks!!
Hey Emmay! Yeah! It's not too overwhelming or scary at all. Well, this was a smaller show, but I think the atmosphere is pretty similar with the SF Pen show, too. I cannot speak for the DC show as that one is probably twice as big as SF. But I had a lot of fun and I'm sure you would too at your first show! =] Thanks for stopping by to watch ^_^
Thanks for sharing Lao! It was like I was standing next next to you at the show. The pens were all gorgeous.🤩The journaler grind on your Sailor looked more "crisp" than the journaler that I had on my Estie. I would have much preferred the crisper feel.
I LOVE the crispy feel of my Sailor Journaler. I wonder if the Sailor nib has something to do with it as well, since the tipping material is slightly rougher than most nibs out there. And jowos are very smooth to begin with - and I assume yours was the pre-grounded one that came with the pen when you bought it? I have two journalers by Gena and I think this one does feel a bit crispier than my first one. So happy it felt like I was taking you all along with me ^_^ Hope to see you in a pen show in the future!
This was so fun! That Pelikan Koi, whoa!! I wish I was as socially confident as you, it sounds like you really got a lot out of this show, thanks for sharing this adventure - hope to see you are the SF Pen Show :)
I have to be socially confident xD It's the nature of my job as a family therapist to be able to be comfortable talking to new people. It's always a bit difficult the very first time, though. And yeah, that Pelikan Koi...If I had 5000 dollars to spend, I'll get it haha! And I'm definitely looking forward to meeting you at San Francisco, Jannah! ^_^
Great video. I’m planning on attending the San Francisco Pen Show in August. It will be my first show and I’m an introvert so I’m a little nervous. I so appreciate the advice you gave during this video, especially about giving yourself time to make a decision about buying a pen and letting it simmer for a few days. My battle against FOMO is an ongoing one. I’m looking forward to getting some specialty grinds done and getting other pens tuned. Hope I get a chance to meet you there.
Thank you, Dianne! Excited to meet you in San Francisco! ^_^ FOMO for pens is so scary and evil! I totally understand. I've built strength around FOMO for most things, but it still creeps up sometimes! :D Appreciate your comment and watching! Let's make your first pen show an amazing one ^_^
Such a great video. It was loads of fun to go on your Chicago Pen Show journey with you! So many beautiful pens and goodies in one space - props to you for being so mindful about spending and knowing what you really wanted to add to your collection. That's one of the things I find so hard about shows. I don't have too much trouble with impulse buying online, but actually being in the space with all the pens can set me off on a totally unnecessary buying spree. 😅
Thanks, Christy! Yeah, my goal there was to just grind my pens, I only withdrew 200 cash. Since it is a smaller pen show AND the taxes are shitty here in Chicago, all vendors charged tax and extra fees to cover their own fees for being there, so I am happy I didn't buy any pens. I didn't even have enough cash for that Koi and then the Planetary Nebula would have costed me 285 + 40 or so in taxes. Not worth it - I'm proud of myself for just admiring and putting pens into my wish list. Definitely saving a lot of money for the SF Pen show! ^_^ I hope you'll be there someday or a pen show so we can meet in person!
Aww, I'm so glad to hear it felt like you were there with me. That was my intention with whipping out my phone at every booth to take these little shots xD Hope you get to go to a pen show someday, Marjorie!
There were so many beautiful pens on display! If I were a millionaire, I'd probably would've bought dozens of them. One of those Astrogems is currently sitting in a package waiting to be opened as an upcoming reward for finally finishing a first draft I've been writing on and off for almost nine years. I can't wait to see it in person and film my unboxing! A custom grind also sounds like a great experience and makes a pen more personal. Kirk Speer is coming to my local pen store in June, but I've not yet decided on what particular type of specialty nib I might get regular use out of.
Oooo! Congrats on finishing your first draft of your book. Can't wait to see which Astrogem you chose. The 3 I picked up in the video are definitely the 3 that I like. I'm so biased, I should have at least panned the camera to show the others clearly, too! Haha. So exciting that Kirk is coming to your local store. He's so great at travelling and getting his services out there to a lot of people all over the US. He should have all of his nib grinds to test out at his table, so you can utilize that to finalize which one you might want ^_^
Loved the video Lao, thank you for sharing. Would you share the info on both nib grinders? I am fairly new to fountain pens, but know enough to want to tweak a few nibs. Thx.
Wow- I need to sit down and watch this entire production- you covered so much. I have to say you’re a legend- I so appreciate you going out of your way to highlight the Benu Leto!!!! 🤩 I have been thinking about it - and didn’t realize how chunky it is, but it’s certainly unique. Love the green shimmer. Thanks so much- you are a star 💫
It's super chunky indeed! But these new patterns are super pretty. I definitely picked up and recorded the 3 I liked the best lol!! And remembered that your favorite was Leto (which I liked, too, so that helped with remembering it). 2 days worth of editing haha! I hope it pays off for new viewers and current pen friends/viewers alike! ^_^
I've been looking forward to this. My power and internet have been out; due to a big stormfront. Just this afternoon getting them back. Whew! Anyway, so happy to get power and so happy to watch your video. I have Sun Pass for tolls. Such a good thing to have. I have that Pelikan green demonstrator. I love the Apple Green color. I thought for sure that you'd get the Platinum Koi, but your reasons make sense. I've never seen that many Edison pens in one place before.
So glad your power came back on and that you're all safe! The Green Demonstrator Pelikan is lovely :) And yes, thank goodness for only having 200 dollars in cash, that really helped me stay away from buying pens that I wasn't there for. That Koi is definitely going on my wish list and I'm hoping I can get a really nice pattern on mine when I do purchase it someday. I did not have 400 in cash, so I couldn't buy the Koi anyways xD So beautiful though! It's totally my aesthetic, very colorful, but most of my Platinums are neutral beauties at the moment.
It was so lovely to meet you, too Debby! :D I hope you and your husband had an easy time getting back home and bought lots of great pens and accessories! :D Hope to see you in another pen show :)

Loved this video!! I’ll be going to the PNW pen show in July, i think it’s a smaller show, but I’m looking forward to seeing all the beautiful pens in person. I’m so glad you were able to get your nibs worked on! Thanks for sharing!💜
Thanks for watching, Yureli. I think the Chicago pen show was pretty small, too, but Chicago's a big city, so it might be just a bit bigger than your PNW show. You must live pretty close to SF that you might be able to go to that one, too. If you go to that one sometime in the future, hope to see you there :) Enjoy your PNW show and I'll be looking forward to what you see on IG or YT!
YAY! I'm happy to hear people enjoy my longer videos. This one took way too long to put together, but I hope it's worth it!! ♥Hope you had extra cups of coffee xD
It has been my dream to join any Pen Show in USA, thank you for sharing the experience with us. Oh gosh… the M1000 Renaissance…. For me this material is like the brown marble of Aurora Volterra. The moment you have m800 renaissance fountain pen and still consider buying the renaissance m1000 …. Ehhhh I need help 😂.
You should think about coming to the San Francisco Pen show, that one has so many vendors and tons of Eastern/Japanese vendors like Tooyoka Craft and Bungubox. And yes, the 1000 Renaissance - I said looks like a beautiful glass of coke and ice...my favorite soft drink beverage lol! If you already have the m800...the only reason to get the 1000 is for wanting that soft nib lol!! xD I think we all need a little bit of help haha ^_^
Lao I love these videos. Am I the only person that doesn’t like feedback? I am a medium girl. I bought a VP in matters black in fine and I pretty much only use it in my passport tn.
Hi Jennifer, I'm so happy to hear you enjoy this video! ♥I don't think you're the only one that doesn't like feedback. A LOT of people prefer smooth writing pens like Pilot, Pelikan, and Lamy (and most Jowos). I think the split is like 2:1 (smooth:feedback). I started off liking mediums, but as I got more experience with pens, my comfort sizes ended up ranging between Japanese MF to Western Fines (Aurora/Pelikan Fines being the thickest). Much like your VP Fine, I only use Broads and thicker mediums for specific things but I can't use those in small hobonichis, and I love my Sailors so much - but Sailor's Mediums write like western mediums - so to use them every day, they had to be grounded for my needs xD
Hey Lau I have a platinum 3776 koi . My notes from when I unboxed it say “heartbreakingly beautiful.”. I think you have the Kilk with the phases of the moon on the band. It’s on my wish list. Wanna talk about a trade? 😊
XD I do have the Kilk with the phases of the Moon on it and it is absolutely beautiful. One of the few black pens in my collection that I truly can't take my eyes off of. I think my Kilk Celestial is too precious to trade or sell. I appreciate the offer ;) If I somehow someway end up wanting to sell it, I'll come to you first. And yes, thank you, not just grail pens but… 𝒜𝓁𝓁 𝓷𝓲𝓫𝓼 𝓌𝑒𝓁𝒸𝑜𝓂𝑒! 🧡✒️🪡
@@KenchanKraftsVery happy to hear that all three pens were a success for you! 🙌
And you’re absolutely correct. You were very much welcomed to return for follow up nib TLC at Chicago.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I feel like it was such a fantastic experience and a bit of a primer on attending a pen show. 😊
Thanks, Olivia! Glad it was helpful and fun to watch! ^_^
Lao, this was such a wonderful recap!! I love your commentary in between pen show footage! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks so much for catching my show recap!! I figured I should commentate a bit for each footage I had but it wasn’t structured at all lol. I hope it is a nice video to listen and watch in the background for folks since it’s a long recap! Can’t wait to see your Dutch pen Show videos!
What a great weekend! Hope to catch up with you at the SF show! 🥰
Yes!! I cannot wait to meet you and everyone else in SF! ♥
Another video and I am still living vicariously through you...thank you for sharing Lao! 😃
Haha, living vicariously is also great! Thank you so much for watching ^_^
Thanks for bringing back the fun! 🎉❤
Another great video. I liked how you interspersed show clips on. You provided a good recap of the show. It was nice meeting you there.
Thanks, Lela! :D A lot of the videos are sort of biased as they are brands I know of or interested in. Some are new to me, though, so hopefully I covered enough of a range of pens for everyone! :D So nice meeting you, too, thank you so much for all the little gifts!
Oooh man that brown black Pelikan and that new black and white one 😍 I hope they make it next year because that’s GORGEOUS!
Fab video, Lao…..so good to see all the beautiful pens… you did well to resist them! 😉
Thanks, Jean! Yes I’m pretty proud of myself!! :)
Great video! Thank you for sharing so much, it was fun to watch while I journaled!
YAY!! Loved that you got some journaling in while watching my video. Guess long videos can be nice for some peaceful journaling and self-time :D
Thanks for the excellent review of the show. You did a great job 👏
Hi there! Thank you for saying that ^_^ I’m glad you enjoyed the journey with me in the video. I’ll make the SF review just as great!
Thank you Lao for the awesome recap. I was unable to join the show, but you did a great job at recapping the entire show. Cheers!
Thank you, Shak!! :) Would have been amazing to see you in person though, but next time! :)
Such a fun video. I loved learning about how you dealt with the nib grind that wasn't quite right.
Thank you so much for saying that! I'm glad talking about it was helpful for you and hopefully others, too.
OMG! I've been looking forward to this video!!! ♥
YAY! Thanks for waiting so patiently, my dear BIC friend!
Really enjoyed this. I have never attended a pen show and it felt like I was there.
Aww, I'm so glad to hear it felt like you were there with me. That was my intention with whipping out my phone at every booth to take these little shots xD Hope you get to go to a pen show someday, Marjorie!
so fun going around with you! Can't wait for the next opportunity to meet up!
Hell yeah!!! Even more pen fun! Going to save 1500 at least for SF!
Thx.
Hi Shaaron, thanks for reminding me. I was going to list all the people in my description box! Please check that when I update here in a bit! :D
@@KenchanKrafts before I buy the Leto I need to watch your video- I’m sure you unearthed more treasures at the show!
It's totally my aesthetic, very colorful, but most of my Platinums are neutral beauties at the moment.
can't wait to watch, but first, I must get the coffee going
GET THAT COFFEE GOING, Marie !!
It was nice to meet you! Enjoyed talking with you. The show was fun!
It was so lovely to meet you, too Debby! :D I hope you and your husband had an easy time getting back home and bought lots of great pens and accessories! :D Hope to see you in another pen show :)
@@KenchanKrafts I was with Scott who is a friend of mine. We met through another channel. Maybe see you at the Atlas Sidewalk Sale in August. It is like an outdoor pen show at the store.
@@debbypodgorski4144 Oops! My apologies for assuming that!! It was great meeting you both. I will be in San Francisco in August, so I might not be able to meet you guys there at Atlas. Tell Scott I said hi :)
Thank you for taking us with you!
You're welcome!! It's becoming something I want to do for everyone now. My adventure isn't just my own now, I'm bringing all my pen friends and lovely devoted viewers along ^_^ and that's half the fun of this whole pen hobby!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and all the clips of the pen show
♥ You're welcome, Jamie!
Love your long videos !!! Glad I brough cup of coffee with your video
YAY! I'm happy to hear people enjoy my longer videos. This one took way too long to put together, but I hope it's worth it!! ♥Hope you had extra cups of coffee xD
My dream is to go to a pen show! This sounds so cool! Thank you for your insights. I love this video!
I hope to see you at a pen show, soon, too! Thanks for watching and enjoying this video! :)
@@KenchanKrafts ahhh I would love to come! The one in New York coming this September will be superb too. One day I simply have to attend one :)
I loved this video, Lao. ❤
Thank you so much, Peggy! ♥
.....MF.. extra fine for the win!!!
xD EXTRA FINE JAPANESE IS TOO FINE! I can take the Fine Panda Sailor. Thanks!! XD
@@KenchanKrafts maybe...I honestly haven't try one yet..but I plan to fix that soon
But in the meantime, I pray one shows up for you in the aftermarket
@@KenchanKrafts well it was worth a try! Thanks for, helping put my wish out to the universe …
