I was introduced to the music of Tom Waits in 1981, when I was 18 years old. I spent many years thereafter listening to very little else. And all these years later he's only gotten better. Thanks for sharing this Justin; maybe I'll have the nerve to give it a try. You did well.
Justin, I have to say - - - THANK GOD FOR JUSTIN SANDERCOE and TH-cam! A year ago, due to the nature of my work, I had to cancel my guitar classes. I turned to you and with your instruction, I've been able to continue my journey in guitar. Today, I finally (and successfully) completed playing along with this cover without any errors. You're such a great teacher. With your instruction, guitar is no longer the blinding fog. I'm now starting to see shapes and it's finally starting to make sense. I just hope you realize how many people you touch. Thank you for being there. THANK YOU!
Thank you for this lovely lesson. You do a great job sharing the essence of the song, encouraging us to be free (within reason) in an effort to recreate Tom Waits' beautiful music. I have returned to this clip several times. You inspire me.
Hi Justin, Hold On is one of my favourite Tom Waits songs, beautiful lyrics, melody and Toms Voice tops the whole experience off. I had watched your lesson and then put the phone in my pocket while I was doing some work and then the whole song played through at the end. Just had to say I thought it was the Tom Waits track playing !!!! You sounded just like him you lucky fella, so envious. Thanks again for the lesson. You make great music accessible to us all. Love your work. 👊👍🎸X
Wow, this is a really great and SIMPLE tutorial. "Hold On" is one of my favorite Tom Waits songs, and Tom Waits is one of my favorite musicians, so this tutorial is a Godsend! You did a great job! Thanks for sharing it with us!!!!!!
I chuckled at the way you named the chords within the song. Took me by surprise. I find that great. Thanks Justin, laid-back lessons as always. Very cool.
This is a wonderful gift Justin, deconstructing this great sad song of Tom's for us ...and with this, ANYONE of us can learn it if we apply ourselves. Many thanks.
Instantly subbed. I love the way you teach this song. I've been trying to learn it for a few weeks now, and your video thus far is the best I've found. I first heard Tom Waits when I was about 15, he's been one of my favorites since then.
Justin... totally agree about Tom Waits... love his music. And his performance... my wife doesn't get it lol... go figure, but i can get lost in Waitsville. Not a pro professional musician, retired Research Scientist, but been picking and discovering musicians since i was a kid. Can't imagine how much I've missed... lol. Thanks for what you do... it's appreciated!
I havn't covered all the videos yet, there are so many but I don't think I saw "I want you" by Tom Waits scrolling down. I would LOOOOOVE to learn that one...
Justin, you nailed it. As you know, not very many people can handle this cover. As a 30 year Tom Waits fan and a one-year guitar player I am very very excited to have discovered this video. Thank you so much for adding this to my favorites list. Cheers, mate!
Thank you Justin, you are my guitar guy and friend during this shut down. You are very good at making song doable and playable. thank you thank you thank you.
Coincidentally, I recently found the Tom Waits little black songbook I borrowed from the library many moons ago...won't harm to hang on to it a little longer....til I get your new books of course ;)
I love your lessons, thank you so much. Everything seems to work in harmony in your vids. Clearly explained, you take your time, it's easy to listen to and follow. Also, you look a lot like Norm Macdonald.
very good cover. this song got Waits nominated for best rock vocal performance for the 42nd Grammy awards but Lenny Kravitz won.. in fact, Lenny Kravitz won that award four times in a row. really grinds my gears.
Very unique teaching technique where you blend the name of the chords on the changes, keeping the sung notes in place but drop out the actual lyric at that point. Never seen that, pretty original.
I started looking at my facebook during your intro version.... forgot I was watching a lesson. Just thought it was an awesome cover worthy of listening to on that merit. Please more Tom Waits as many are suggesting. Not only do you cover/teach him well, but you referred to his voice as "wonderful." You get it, man. This would have been one of my top requests. Also, "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You" and "San Francisco Serenade" please.
Nice, awesome cover. I listen to waits a lot, brilliant artist, it's hard to get even close to his voice, but you did good sir. Also, thank you for the lesson, I never thought it would be this easy haha. Cheers.
Nice, Monte Rio is a tiny little town in Sonoma County California deep in the redwoods noted for its beauty and its meth. The Russian River runs near it (the rio part) and TW lives in the general area.
Hi Justin, just wanted to let you know how good ur channel is and iv been subscribed since i found it a good few years ago. Hope you will eventually get around to doing a lesson on Dire Straits "Walk Of Life" if possible. Many thanks and look forward to ur next set of lessons, btw Tom Waits rocks and you did it the justice it deserves
is there a way for the video link here to post a downloadable lyrics with chords sheet, this would definetly be the next step in this teaching tech. Like many people I have been developing my own songbooks for years. It would be a huge time saver to hit a print button, and have a sheet to practice from. This would be a real teaching aid, with tabs, or just simple lyrics with chords above words, and a capo position suggestion. Thanks for your good work, I hope your playing live somewhere...you've got a great voice. I'm 61 and teaching my children and grandchildren. Live singer-songwriter stuff in a coffee house setting is something metro-boston has in spades! Passims, cambridge, and Me and Thee, marblehead are 2 jewels that have been around a long time. PEACE Jim Pringle
Really appreciate all the videos you post. I second the suggestion for "I Want You" - beautiful simplicity. tanDlegen has a wonderful cover Or "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" would be great. I guess just MORE TOM WAITS :)
Hey Justin. LOVE YOUR LESSONS. I am making so much progress. There's one song I really NEED To play. ANNALELLE LEE by T-Bone Burnett. Can't find chords, tablature or lessons ANYWHERE. Please help. CHEERS BUDDY.
Thanks for the suggestion. There’s a song request board (plus 700+ song lessons) here: www.justinguitar.com/songs Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher
This is mainly the same as downtown train, same chords progression for the verse, same chords, different progression for the chorus and same strumming pattern.

Justin, you are awesome, just live forever, bring happiness to people
Ten years old this video and I've just started to learn it the day before yesterday!

I think it's great. I'm going to try it! I love Tom Waits. This is one of my favorites.

Wow. Really impressive Tom Waits imitation! This is one of the very few Tow Waits I've really liked!
I quite enjoyed listening to Justin singing this. I would have downloaded it to my music files if it was only the song.
I love your lessons, thank you so much. Everything seems to work in harmony in your vids. Clearly explained, you take your time, it's easy to listen to and follow. Also, you look a lot like Norm Macdonald.
Fantastic song beautifully played and sung. Thank you
