I have never understood, even if nothing went wrong, what they expected to accomplish with the Shockmaster. It would have been a historically bad gimmick even if he stayed upright and the helmet stayed on.
He would have won the fuckin title. WCW Heavyweight chhhhhhampion The ShockMASTER!!

Exactly. Everything from the concept to the payoff was terrible. Also, the whole purpose of a mystery partner is to reveal someone who the fans would be happy to see. Even if he didn't fall how were the fans supposed to know who he was under that mask?
Seriously. It's still Tugboat in a sparkly Stormtrooper helmet and Ole Anderson using a silly voice changer. "AT THE FALL BRAWL. AT THE WAR GAMES"
It would have still been pretty memorable. Better than Mantaur.
Also Ole didn't use a voice changer to do the voice, I've seen him do it in a shoot interview, he was talking about the Black Scorpion, but it's the exact same voice he did there too.
Yeah that makes it even better.

Man, Sid had me laughing my ass off with that! Stevie Ray said that Sid saw the board during the initial setup and warned the prop guys that Fred was gonna trip on it if they didn’t move it but they didn’t listen. 🤣🤣
Apparently the prop guy put it there on purpose to fuck with Fred

Ole (Anderson, as the voice of "The Shockmaster"): "Yeah, I fell flat on my (fu#ckin') ass, Davey Boy Smith. Just call me Tugboat Thomas, Typhoon (with the (Canadian) Earthquake, John Tenta), Uncle Fred or the Super Shockmaster. " Tenta was: a Japanese sumo wrestler, the (WCW) Shark, Golga (of the Oddities stable, in the WWF)
He tried to tell them the board down low was going to trip him
All the little quips by the other wrestlers makes it a timeless botch.
It worked out because had they continued using that helmet, Disney would have sued them for past revenue

What you failed to realize was the shock master did indeed shock the world. what a trip😂 Fred is a nice guy
I saw this live on TV and STILL cannot get enough just listening to Jim talk about it
It's a shame, because I could totally see the Shockmaster going over and holding the belt for a decade.
The Black Scorpion was a good idea, and it worked at first. People wanted to see who it was, and the minion subplot was an acceptable way to give Sting a bunch of clean wins. Then for some reason he started doing magic tricks and junk. Had they left that out and just found an acceptable identity at the end it would have been great.
The main reason why it didn't work is that all the proposed ideas didn't pan out, and the only one left was Flair, the man they didn't want to main event in the first place.
Here's the really sad part. As bad as this whole gimmick was, as poorly thought out, as poorly executed, it's STILL not as stupid as the giant pubic hair muscle suit that Vince made poor Jorge Gonzales wear.
I don't think they made holes in the shock master helmet so the guy couldn't even see how cheap was WCW
They did make holes, but you still can't see shit through them, they're too small and too far apart
Is the falling down really what killed that gimmick? I think it was doomed way before that

Dusty Rhodes says in one interview that the 2x4 was put there on purpose. Somehow,somewhere, a carpenter was insulted on that set and decided to rib T.Shockmaster Sr.
If I'm correct it was Jim herds idea.
@@TheJohnnyDoggsIt was Dusty Rhodes’ idea. I think Heard was gone at that time. Flair had left WCW when Heard was president because they butted heads and came back when Dusty returned & had the booking duties.
did "Cowboy" Bill Watts come in after (Jim) Herd left WCW ? I wonder if (Eric) Bischoff worked in WCW during Kip Allen Frey's reign (WCW's VP).
@@kshinokevin Watts did come in at that time, but was basically forced to leave there after (see “Bill Watts Pro Wrestling Torch interview” for more on that); I think Frye was running the show until Bischoff was moved up to that spot.

what i never understood was, IF the skit had worked the way they wanted was Shockmaster going to wear the helmet during matches? I mean what was the plan. If I had a time machine I'd go back and warn fred about the board so we could see the alternate timeline where the gimmick lived beyond that fateful flair for the gold

Well. You have this big lumbering guy who didn't really fit the gimmick in the first place. Maybe with a slightly smaller and less husky wrestler it might have worked. Maybe? Obviously Fred Ottman was not the right guy to pull it off!!
But he just came to WCW at the time and they were desperate for a gimmick for him. But an absolute failure on every level!!
