The Colonel didn’t want Elvis to sing this song as he felt was too controversial. But having lived in poverty himself Elvis wanted to make a statement that ,even today, makes people cry at his understanding and emotions. 👌🕺💕

These songs were written for Elvis in the 68 comeback special. Elvis sang these first. Of them were: In the Getto, Kentucky Rain, Supecious Minds, and If I can Dream. These 4 were the main hits out of that time. You can look up the directors and writers talking about the 68 comeback special there’s 3 or more on TH-cam. You get a good understanding of Elvis, as they worked with him and Parker the manager. Who did his best to sabotage it cause he bullied writers out of their copy rights and country here. His gambling debt was the most on his own mind. And he was out of touch with Elvis’ full talent and creative ability.

Elvis wasn't a songwriter (his talent was in interpreting, arranging, and producing songs), but he did co-write a couple songs. He came up with the title and co-wrote "That's Someone You'll Never Forget" which everyone suspects was about his mother.

Elvis wanted to tour the world but the rumor was Col Parker had a reason to be afraid to go abroad. His real name was Andreas Cornelius Van Kuijk. He was from Breda, Netherlands.” The Colonel left Europe under a cloud of suspicion involving an unsolved murder, slipped into the U.S. illegally and learned how to hustle while traveling with carnivals and circuses. So because he was in the US illegally he was worried he wouldnt be allowed back in if he left so he never arranged for Elvis to perform abroad even though Elvis wanted to.

Back in past eras, many Jazz, R'n'R, Motown, Pop artists did not write, composers, lyricists, and singer /performers were separate crafts, the singer/songwriter didn't become the norm until the mid-60s. Legendary artists Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Aretha Franklin(Queen of Soul), Jackie Wilson, Diana Ross, Jerry L.Lewis....were not writers, but brilliant interpreters of songs. Elvis had numerous great songwriters that wrote many songs specifically for him, mixed with some covers that he made his own with his unique voice and style. Elvis is one of the most versatile vocal stylists ever, singing authentically in many genres and he is in many music halls of fame. Even though he only co-wrote a few songs, he produced his music in the studio. The movie trailer looks visually stunning, of course, they couldn't find anyone that looks like Elvis, there isn't anyone, however, Austin is a very good actor and I'm hopeful he can capture the essence of Elvis. In the Ghetto is a great song, very meaningful back then and still today.

Nice reaction guys with a couple of points others may have noticed. Cissy Houston only worked with Elvis for a few weeks in 1969 on his comeback to Vegas, the film here was 1970. Your quote this is a nice album track was interesting as the song was actually a huge global hit across the world, selling millions and if you re-listen to the words you will see why black reactors on TH-cam are deeply impacted.

Elvis cared very much for the Black community and fought against the systematic racism that this song speaks to. Young Black kids raised without opportunities available to them, so they do what they need to survive, and the cycle repeats itself..... and the most important line of the song, do we as a society, just ignore it and allow it to continue.

Elvis didn't write songs (contributed to a couple as someone said), but that wasn't his talent. It's okay, he had a lot of other talents to go around (musician, singer, producer, interpreter, and oh yeah, one of the best voices EVER in recorded music history). But just because he didn't write songs doesn't mean he only sang covers; many songs were sung by him first.
He is also in several Halls of Fame (Rock 'n' Roll, R&B, Gospel, and Country - the only artist in all 4 of these), so his versatility is unmatched. Yet it's hard to listen to an Elvis song and pin it down to any one genre, because there's a lot of rock in his pop, a lot of country in his blues, a lot of blues in his rock, a lot of rock in his gospel, and a lot of gospel in almost everything.

Elvis wanted his concert outfits made with high collars because he was self conscious thinking his neck was too long, this info came from people that toured with him. Elvis sung this song when racial tensions was high, the song may seem a mild nice song but in the day when he recorded it the message couldn't have been clearer in America, he didn't have to sing about controversial subjects but he used his tremendous platform to spotlight the plight of many African Americans living in poverty.

Hopefully the world will see who Elvis really was and what he stood for. He has left us all a great legacy. God Rest His Soul. I'll definitely watch the movie. I like movies based on true life anyway, and generally movies based on music icons tend to be really good ( the movies about Tina Turner and Freddie Mercury were top notch, but I think Elton was let down badly with 'his' movie unfortunately).
Elvis - whether you were/are a fan or not- is probably the biggest musical icon to have lived, and I think part of the reason (apart from the voice, those smouldering looks, and the wriggling hips) was he was a fantastic story teller. He put emotion into his performances and just connected with people. Singers like that are few and far between, and that's what elevates them from simply being a good singer to an icon.
    My, that was wordy.

Great reaction the attention to detail in the trailer is exceptional, the outfits etc, the bandage on Elvis's hand just amazing!! Think you were stingy on your score considering what the actual song is about and Elvis shining a light on the subject of people living in the ghetto and society being blind to it , and the cycle continues. Elvis co wrote 2 songs , he was great at interpreting songs in his way , he produced his songs which he never got credit for ! I'm not sure if you've reacted to just pretend live 1970 vegas , you gave me a mountain 1973 aloha also from the same concert what now my love! Also his gospel songs he won 3 grammys for that and Elvis is the only entertainer to be put in the most different genre of hall of fame.....he definitely is the greatest!!

One of the things I like about the Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode songs I know is that they are stripped down and for the masses. I can relate to the English working classes through music, just like I can via The Who and The Animals. What I am saying is that Elvis rose from the poorest of the poor, the meagerest of beginnings. He died with the mindset of a poor man. That is why we still remember him. That is why we love artists that are honest and give us who they are, no matter the genre.

Elvis’ big collars came from his appreciation of Liberace. They became friends and Elvis liked his flashy costumes. He loved fashion and a trend setter. Also, came from the Tudor style collars he liked. He wanted to travel abroad, but the Colonel was an illegal alien from Holland and was afraid he couldn’t get back in the US. He didn’t have a passport. He was previously a circus carnival barker.

Parker “ It has everything to do with us”, when Hanks commented on the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. “it has nothing to do with us.” Also, it has been reported that due to the defecient recording abilities of the 1950’s they couldn’t use Elvis’ 1950’s recordings so Butler sang on those songs in the movie. But from the 1960’s on it is Elvis’ own voice we hear in the movie.

@@BritPopsReact I saw Blur etc in the 90s (not Oasis I'll be honest," but I hope you two take 3 minutes offline and listen to In The Ghetto again. I would say it's such an important song that maybe 50% of Elvis fans would say it's their fave tune. It was so controversial at the time for a white artist singing about black shit. Go on,3 minutes of you're offline life! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿♥️♥️♥️

Elvis’s manager was Dutch and had overstayed his visa or something, so if he traveled abroad, he’d have trouble getting back into the USA. No foreign tours. Imagine how big Elvis would’ve been after a world tour…On the other hand, he’s still big in the US after his death 4 decades + ago. Btw In the ghetto was a social commentary rather than a song to calm things doen on stage (or something said to that effect in your analysis). Stay on the Elvis path - Just Pretend, How Great thou art, If that isn’t love, Nothing’s quite as pretty as Mary in the morning…it’s a long list!

Back Davis road Several songs for Elvis. He originally pitched the idea of in the ghetto to Sammy Davis junior. Mac Davis was a country music singer in the 70s.
I watch a lot of African American reactors And many of them have Stated that Stated that they grew up believing Elvis was racist. You seem to have missed what a profound message there was in that song. The Colonel did not want him to sing it, too controvercial. An excellent song with a message much of the public did not want to hear at the time, and of course beautifully sung as usual by the King.

You apparently haven't discovered the impact Elvis had. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, etc. and so many were inspired by him. Like Sinatra, and at artists at the time, he didn't write most of his songs but he was accomplished at interpreting songs and made them his own. He was influenced by gospel. Blues. Country, pop and crested his own sound. He is the top selling single artist of all time at more than 500 million songs. If you really want to know his in comparable impact and his roots you need to react to Elvis and the Black Community parts 1 and 2. It removes so many of the incorrect stereotypes.

The young man is not singing. They used a method mixing the actor's voice with Elvis's voice(for whatever reason... ). Thank God many songs are original. The movie is good for new fans, who haven't been involved with the real facts about Elvis's life. For the older fans, it's an effort to provide information about a Megastar, an unprecedented individual and a unique personality the way it suited specific.. people...
