    This episode was the point where my last shreds of patience for this era finally snapped. I've kept giving it chances, kept allowing it to win me over, and every time I do I keep getting burned, and I'm just fed up. The same issues keep coming up over and over again, there's been absolutely no progress with regard to character development, there's no depth or interesting themes, and we have those exact same problems show up once again here in an episode that is so bad you have to wonder how anyone involved in the production thought this was in any way good enough to be shown on prime time BBC television. For the first time ever since I started watching this show, I'm actually begging for an era of this show to come to an end as quickly as possible, and I'm super glad we've only got one episode left. It's the end, and whether the moment has been prepared for or not, it cannot come soon enough

    • @Jarool21
      @Jarool21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I mean, Flux ended and we had 3 episodes left. Character development is either too ridiculous, or just won't happen. And this relationship between Yaz and The Doctor being shoehorned in... I originally stopped watching after the Orphan 55 episode, then I watched through the whole of New Who with a friend (and made him a fan), then we watched through these series and are going to finish watching the last special when it airs. I just made fun of this episode over and over during the viewing and that was the only fun that could be had watching it.
      Btw, we watched Whittaker/Chibnall's run because we were going through all of New Who (I knew it was garbage, and it still is), and I'm typically fairly lenient on a lot of stuff, and my friends are too, but even we would have fun saying "OMG new episode out! We gotta watch it!" as our 'new fan' friend groaned at the thought (don't be confused, we all dislike it overall, it's just funny to us to pretend to be excited to watch trash). So, at this point in time, we're going to watch the last special regardless, but I know it'll be a nothing episode that doesn't do anything groundbreaking, except get me excited for The Doctor FINALLY regenerating!

    Additionally, I feel a need to express my frustration over the Yaz character....
    She was the least interesting character when Jodie's run started, they've made little to no effort to actually give her a reason to be there other than being a cast member on the show, and i can't stress this enough, having her fall in love with the Doctor is not an arc. There is exactly zero build up to it outside of possible nonsense in Flux I've not bothered to watch, and unless they started giving her a personality outside of whatever the script needs her to be, it literally means nothing. The entire first RTD run was based around characters falling in love with the Doctor or wanting to run with him eternally, but the characters were given time to actually mature and develop and give us a reason to care. Chibnall has provided an interesting possibility of development for 2 characters who are no longer even on the show, and they weren't even written well when they were there.
    Yaz is literally just there, and now has the distinction of being the companion that has stuck around longer than any other revival companions out of sheer lack of things to do with her. Think about that: 3 seasons, and I still don't know what makes this character tick. She started out wanting to be a better cop, and that got mentioned maybe three times over her entire run. She just randomly knows how to work things she should know nothing about and will occasionally spout Doctor nonsense because apparently writing is hard. And the worst trope of all, everyone just seems to love telling her how great she is when she's done nothing to earn it!!! That's not an arc, that just bad, lazy writing. Donna Noble was great because we saw a self centered, shallow woman transform into a companion with compassion, heart, and genuine love for other people. Martha Jones was swept off her feet by a stranger she fell in love with, and learned to stand on her own 2 feet without him because her didn't return those feelings and she needed to move on with her life. I can go on with every other revival companion up until Chibnall started and show your where growth and development took place.
    No one has developed over Chibnall's run, so any decision to create a character change feels out of place because it seems to come out of nowhere and lead to nothing. Expository planks of wood aren't people. And Yaz isn't remarkable, great, fantastic, terrific, or even remotely interesting.
    Edit: Yaz has been with the 13th Doctor for the whole run, but because the seasons were so short, Clara Oswald is actually still the longest serving companion in the revival era, as her 21/2 seasons run around 36 episodes to Yaz's 31.

      While Clara may be the longest standing nuwho companion she is the only companion to stay with the doctor from the start of their run and is there the entire time. Rose doesn't count with eccelston because she continued on with tennant and is considered Tennant's companion just as much as eccelston

    • @jsh7939
      @jsh7939 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Mrcool210 This is somehow true. The bond between 13 and Yaz in 31 episodes is probably even less so than 10's with the girl from the Christmas Titanic episode. Just as an example. Every companion has an arc and is most importantly a personality. They always meld with the Doctor very well in their own ways. Yaz is simply there. She is as if someone wrote a list of good character traits down but then forgot to put them to film so instead we are just told how good she is. I genuinely can't remember a single good individual moment from her.

    I'm actually surprised that it even got a 1 from you. This era has been something I wouldn't give to a dog to eat, a cat to poop on, or my worst enemy to watch. I'm not expecting the RTD2 era to be a total course correction, but it will be better than whatever Chibs and Whits have crapped out.

    I don't even have to use the controversial changes in canon to explain why Chibnal's era sucks.
    It's the pacing/music/lighting/dialogue/acting

    I just saw this episode as another flagrant disregard for storytelling, disrespect for the actors, and a disdain for the audience. Chibnall has so much to wrap up before the end of his era, and he now has ONE special left to do that in. As we saw from Flux's bloated finale, he struggles to tie up too many loose ends deftly. Plus, as someone else pointed out, the same problems just kept popping up. I want this whole era to be over and behind us ASAP, and for Jodie to come back in a future special under a different showrunner's tenure.

    Just one more episode with Jodie and hopefully she'll be gone. I just feel she has no empathy for the character of The Doctor whatsoever and was woefully miscast for the role.
    Just go and watch the original Sea Devils story with the Pertwee's third Doctor, Jo Grant and the wonderful Roger Delgado as The Master to see how it should be done.

    One really needs to have seen the original Sea Devils story to appreciate how ill-served they were here; their physical appearance was great, that's where it ends. Why bother with swords and close-quarter combat when, tens of millions of years ago, Sea Devil science had already developed efficient rayguns which could kill at a distance? And all that woo-woo with Super Mario leaps, phantom ships etc was totally at odds with their very believable terrestrial (albeit amphibious) roots. Instead, we got generic sci-fi "monsters" with the almost magical powers of Marvel supervillains. It all made a nonsense of Malcolm Hulke's thoughtful original conception, and they rubbed salt into the wound by getting his name wrong in the credits.

    I admittedly quite like Planet of the Dead, I prefer it to The Waters of Mars.
    I gotta ask though, how didn't you know that the Sea Devils were underwater relatives to the Silurians? I've never seen their Classic Era episodes either, but that's basically the only thing notable about them compared to the normal Silurians. It's their defining trait.

    I’m afraid I skipped to your verdict first so I’d be spoiler free but it confirmed my suspicions. I don’t plan to watch this episode in full in the near future (or probably ever).
    I can’t wait for Chibnall to go, he really drove what used to be my favourite TV series into the ground with crap writing and PC bullshit. I’ll just stick to the old R.T Davies and Steven Moffat episodes until the former takes over again.

    • @JontyLevine
      @JontyLevine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid there's not going to be less of the PC stuff under Russell. If anything, there's going to be more, judging from his comments in interviews. But at least it will be competently written. You might think I'd welcome this, but after being preached to by _Rosa_ and _Demons of the Punjab,_ and that goddawful _Witchfinders,_ I simply *cannot* be excited anymore for my sci-fi to have morals in it. Russell is a smart man and is probably aware of this reaction. So he'll most likely hold off the worst of it until his second season.
      What I'm saying is, don't judge RTD2 until you've seen Series 15. It might be fine and I'd be worried about nothing. But I've a feeling it's going to ruin a lot of people's nostalgia for Series 1-4. So don't get your hopes up.
