- Like you, I love Potter USA’s huge range of impression dies (links below), but I am always thinking of ways to use them beyond simply cutting out the stamping and calling it a day. This video walks you through the steps required to create a pair (or three) of sterling silver ear jackets using a single stamping. I show you the die I’m using (and why I chose it), how to make the impression using a 20-ton hydraulic press, and give you a couple variations so you can make your ear jackets adjustable in length. By cutting the stamping apart and altering its intended form, I hope to inspire you to look at your dies in a new way. Clearly, the stampings are stunning in their own right, but how can you alter them to get even more use out of them? It’s something to think about!
Check out the links and tools/materials list below, and let’s get started!
NOTE: I forgot to use spacers while pressing the stamping! Make sure to use steel spacers to elevate your die and prevent the jack from over-extending. If it over-extends, it can leak oil and cause problems.
NOTE: I mention the wrong-size drill bit in the video. Please use the size listed in the materials list, below.

Thank you Annie! I really loved your tips for the adjustable tabs! I would love to see more videos showing how to alter the Potter USA dies. Thank you!
Love how you think outside of the box! Another great video!
This is a great video! Thanks so much! I do have a question about making the earring with post. So far I've only made earrings with ear wires and then just soldered them. How do you secure the jacket back to the earring post? And/or how do you make the catch for the earring post?
Great video thanks
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Great video, Annie! Thanks.
Excellent video tutorial!
Thanks! Informative!
Love the graphite tip for controlling solder!
You mention pumice powder. Where can I get that? Thanks for the great videos
Any jewelry supplier should have it! I got mine from Rio. You get a big box of it that will last forever.
I found it. Do you mix it with water to use it.. Thanks for the quick response
Just moisten your fingertip and dip it in the powder. It's my favorite way to remove liver of sulfur!
Thanks so much. I can’t wait to try it. I have never like the result with steel wool or other abrasive pads
These are great fun! Thanks Annie...
Hi Where can I get a piece of lead that size? I don't have a press so could I use this in large stamps with a hammer to get an impression?
