THE Cheapest Tomato Trellis

  • This season I'll show you every Trellis method I can think of starting off with my favorite early season system the single leader string trellis!
The single leader string tomato trellis is definitely the cheapest when it comes to materials, give that you have something to attach to. I like to do this for my earliest tomatoes due to the high air flow and low disease pressure. The single leader tends to produce earlier as well as the plant doesn't have to support all the suckers! Full pros and cons down below:
    Advantages:
    Cheap, pennies in string/twine
    Higher Airflow = Less Disease
No Suckers = Earlier + Larger Tomatoes
    Denser planting for more variety
    Disadvantages:
    Lower Overall Harvest w/o Suckers
    High Maintenance Due To Pruning
If Not Maintained It Becomes Floppy FAST

OMG I need to vent, my husband, kids and I moved to VA a year ago and I started growing different things but the ones I was most proud of were my onions that I propagated and grew on my own. Anyway we were outta town and had a "professional landscaper" come in to cut the grass and that's it. We came home to find he cut my whole garden to shreds, not only all my onions that were about to flower but my full grown and blooming tulips. I've never been so upset about this type of stuff before, anyway I'll never be hiring that person again and I'll find better options next time. Sucks though, I had to throw away 6-10 months of my hard work due to the negligence. Thanks for all your vids, it helps me to keep trying. Thanks everyone!

I was growing about 25 peach tree starts in my side yard area and it was weedy so one hot summer morning I asked my 14 year old daughter to weed next to it. She got “helpful” and kept right on weeding into the peach tree area, pulling out all the trees. When I came out to check on her after a while she was almost done. I was horrified! We were actually able to save some of the “wilted” trees and now we make a joke about it. Blessings to you as you plant and grow your future gardens!

I'm doing almost the exact same method even with the same galvanized pipe frame! Except I didn't bury the string or worry about where I wrapped it on the tomatoes. I just tie it off at the bottom of the plant once it gets big enough to need support and wrap it around the stem all the way up to the pipe above. As the plant grows taller I just continue to twist the top of the plant around the twine. An adjustable knot it a good idea because the string will get very tight on the tomatoes. This method works great. But if you have 30 tomato plants like we do, it can be a lot of work.

Break apart that root ball before you put your tomato in the ground and bury more of the stem. It helps the roots find the right direction faster, strengthens the stalk, and gives you a much higher and faster yield.
Edit: Also, don’t put the additives directly against the roots like that. Mix them into the soil at the bottom of the hole so they don’t actually destroy the roots. Doesn’t matter what kind of additives you use.
