  • As promised, we take a look round the newly acquired SL55. It's an older car and there is a list of things that need doing....

Looks in pretty good shape, well done! One lovely design touch are the seat belts in the rear to restrain extra luggage on top of the storage bins.

Yeah, that's a very cool feature. I understand there was a bespoke bag to go here?

ABC valve block seals could be the problem. Mine was sagging to the left side. My service flushed the system three times then replaced all 32 O rings and problem solved for good.

That's for this, that's great info. I might get this done as a proactive - behind the front left wheel arch right? Love that is 'only' 32 O rings 😆

You need to use genuine MB valve cover gaskets if you don't want them to leak again.

I ironically came across your channel as I'm looking at getting a McLaren 570s... I have an 06 SL65, with 50 000km. Loved it from the 1st day I saw it at the Johannesburg Motor Show in 2005 (I was in university then). Your SL55 looks immaculate. There are great Mercedes R230 groups in Facebook that give a world of information.

You've got great taste in cars! Nice work on the V12, they're super rare! For me, I just love the sound of the V8. I've just joined the R230 / R231 FB group - I'm sure it will come in handy! Good luck on the 570s. You will LOVE it! 🔥

Could help with a calibration of the suspention. Also, consider valve block restoration.

Good looking car with a nice colour combination. These cars are a dream when in good order. Very smooth in daily driving and a beast when you need some power! Enjoy!

Nice car, I've owned my SL55 for 4 years, looked at low mileage ones around the 20k - 30k, but in the end, I bought the cheapest one in the country because i wanted to mod it. But with everything that was wrong with it I only spent around 3k to get it working as it should abc roof etc, and that includes all the mods
The rear drivers side strut is always the first to go, the others should be ok for years with a yearly abc fluid flush.
The only major problem I have which is common on these, is the rear battery drain, so far ive disconnected everything that normally drains it, but I still have the drain, just bought a thermal camera so hopefully i can get to the bottom.of it once and for all.
Good luck with it, lovely colour btw, first one I've seen with it.

Thanks for the comment and the sub, appreciated 👍🏻
I'm a huge fan of these cars so it's great to see we're keeping the dream alive - and yes. They can be very demanding! Have you confirmed there actually is a drain using a reliable clamp meter? Great place to start...

I fitted my 2004 SL55 with a Kufatec Bluetooth interface, which I believe is a great solution. You preserve the original look of the Stereo, stick to the original Bose Soundssystem and still can use your steering wheel buttons.

Mine came with a viseeo unit already installed under the armrest. Haven't yet taken the time to try pairing it all up with my phone yet...

    • @jankundert4353

Viseeo works well but only pairs for phone calls. Kufatec also allows for Music streaming. This way, it also replaces the GPS functions - with Google maps on the phone and streamed voice :) But still, preserving the original look seems important to me. Looking forward to what you will be doing with it👍

the problem with the r129 is that all the plastic components rot. which you can not fix.
