Thanks John for that beerless pub crawl , been in all of those pubs, except, the wetherspoons next to Mc Donald’s , it was a coop (LCS) when I lived in South Woodford 1982, we bought a tumble dryer from there on higher purchase!!! Also The new craft ale pub that opened just before lockdown, I promised myself a good walk around Leytonstone after lockdown , I bought my wife’s wedding ring in the jewellers opposite, just over the footbridge 1979.
I used to live in selby road opposite the plough and Harrow , and used to listen to the bands music blasting out outside. Maybe you know about the loss of some good pubs and dives , going down Leytonstone high road from the plough , was the half way house , then of course the thatched house , do a left at the thatched house , into Cann Hall road , down to on the right hand side , the Colegrave Arms , this was a shrine to me, my granddad , dad, brother , godfather , all used to drink there , and when we all moved away from the immediate area , we all went there on Christmas Day lunch time session, I’m sure you would have loved it in there , that’s if you never went there, Further along Cann Hall road , towards the flats the Lord Rookwood a fantastic looking pub. Last I heard they were all gone,
Got a bit jealous watching beer being served at the North Star, how we all took it for granted !!! I think after this episode , hopefully we will see the beauty around us wherever we live , and how good it is to stand at a bar in a pub (in Leytonstone for me ) have a nice pint of craft/ real ale talking to a mate about how brilliant Orient are , and watching people just come and go !!!!! Priceless

Many, many memories...and probably more never remembered... Back in the mid 80's, my late teens, early 20's...me and a great drinking buddy of mine once spent a long weekend beginning at Aldgate, along the Whitechapel, Mile End road, Stratford Broadway, Maryland point, high rd Leytonstone and ended in the green man. Can barely do 3 pints now....great job again Johnny.🍻

I was always wondering why the roads around the North Star looked villagy, as you've correctly said and now I've got the answer. Definitely my favourite part of Leytonstone! Yesterday I jogged from WG to Barking. Went past The Roding, the Inn Business, former Avenue Hotel, the Vernon Arms, and the Earl of Essex... in terms of pubs, it is a tale of two East Londons...
- E10, E11 and E17... growing, blooming, flourishing.
- E6, E12 and E13... dead, dead, dead.

Hi John, I worked in The North Star in 1966. I grew up in Hackney and moved to Fairlop Road in 1959. I've just discovered your walks and really enjoying watching them.

I do love an old pub! They're like the stately homes of "ordinary" working class people and their history, a bastion of community camaraderie. Nice story about Micky Rourke 👍
I know I'm about a year behind but what a great post. Brings back fabulous memories of working in Leyton and Leytonstone during the 90's. It's amazing to see the changes that have occurred of the past twenty years. Most of them for the better, I might add !!
Great video John ... I lived on langthorne road few years back .. nice to see them pubs I drank in Leyton and Leytonstone still there.. hopefully I get back there one day and enjoy a few beers 🍺

Fantastic video John.Such memories to savour. Although not a big drinker I have been in most of the pubs shown. 60 years ago I played with my skiffle group at the Northcote Pub. Played snooker upstairs in the Crown regularly. Such memories are priceless and I really thank you for the time and effort (you were panting a bit.lol) you give.Best Wishes and Stay Safe.

My only memory of The Heathcote was not from drinking there but passing it on my way Norlington School between 1956 and 1960. Great video, as always, John.
just a note on those old iron railings you came across John, i have read, as im sure many others have the refence in Emily Cockayne's book RUMMAGE to the fate of the iron that was taken from streets during the war years for munitions. It was too impure to be effective and was dumped into the Tames and became a shipping hazard due to its magnetic pull. What a pity ,the streets would look very different if it had remained. Great video John, frightening to think of all the pubs that have shut. The Plough and Harrow was renamed The Laurel and Hardy for a while in the 80s and owned by Sir Trevor Brooking footballing legend.
It is sad indeed David - thankfully the Pub Protection policy will make it harder to convert them now

I think terry venable owned it at one time , his dad had a pub in sewardstone road , cant remember the name of it , at the moment , but I went in there a coupe of times , there were lots of photos of terry on the walls , his dad was very proud of him , and rightly so , a great bloke
Richard Butler , Maybe it was Terry that owned it and not Trevor, my memory is a bit jaded these days but I know it was someone big in footie. Great times in there though
Checked with an old mate , re Terry Venables and the plough and Harrow , pretty sure it was terry pub , we also used to go in Bobby Moore’s pub in Stratford Called Mooro’s , Bobby was often seen standing behind the bar , no serving beer just chatting , always smartly dressed , seems it was a lot of footballers dream was to own a pub ! You needed a few quid in them days to buy one , I suppose some footballers today could buy a small country !!!

Wonderful walk! You're so creative - I love the concept. Watching post lockdown, you put a bright light on those difficult times that we are hopefully done with.
The three big entertainment pubs in the sixties through to the seventies to go to in my younger days going along Leytonstone high road from Sratford to Leytonstone used to be the Plough and Harrow the Red Lion and the Greenman on the roundabout at the A12, good times and some good bands
I can really relate to this. Fortunately for me, some of the pubs in Vancouver BC have opened again. Many of the craft breweries have been open, but no tasting rooms yet. The re-opening of such places is eagerly anticipated, hopefully as much for the connection and community as for the great libations.
The weekend is never complete for me until I see your new walks John !

I love the history, I used to live down the road in e5 & e9 in the 60's and 70's before moving to north essex in 75. Later on I was involved in the construction of the link road too. Great video's and I could listen to you all day. Hope you enjoyed those beers ;)

Hi John. I showed this to my wife as Terry her Dad dug graves in St Patricks' Cemetry, frequented most of these pubs and she well remembers sitting outside The North Star on a Sunday lunch time with her brother having a packet of crisps and a lemonade while he had a pint or two inside. Happy memories for her, so thanks.

I'm a bit late to this, it's been a bit of an involved few days.
I love the fact that you always give us the background info on whatever it is you're looking at, in this instance the local pubs.
It also gives me a buzz hearing about the history embedded in street names, very early history in some cases.
Super job as always John, now I must fly as I can hear the fizz of a pint of IPA hitting the glass. Cheers!

Blakey off On The Buses is buried in St Patricks.
In the late 90s The Heathcote was a right toilet. It always had the same alcoholics in, showed football, different manager every 6 months. Lots of drug use and violence.

Now that really is my old stomping ground! I lived in a flat directly opposite The Plough and Harrow (in Paramount House, I don't know if it's still called that) for a few years, back when the estate next to it was still concrete and tower blocks (I remember watching those come down). I've had a few in most of those pubs.

Too many pubs have closed sadly. Otley where I lived is a small market town in West Yorkshire, it used to have 30 pubs now reduced to 20 but the need for real ale is keeping them going. Wonderful video John thank you.

thanks Ashley. I don't think Keiller comes out this way apart from the shot of Barking Creek. I could be wrong. I imagine the Gibbet would have been on the Great West Road which was famous for its highwaymen

I'm a bit late to party but great video John, i grew up in Leytonstone, Ferndale rd and have had a pint in everyone of those pubs apart from the newer one's the Filly brook and the Lunar lounge.
I spent most of my youth in the pool hall above the Red Lion and The Green Man/The Cube.
Enjoyed this video. Missing the Northcote & Birbeck Taven when going to see the mighty Orient. Up the O's!

I saw Mike Reed in the Green Man in 1972? before he became famous, hilarious and very blue!!
Sadly, only been in one (maybe two) of these John. Not really my old stomping ground being Walthamstow based back in the day. Fascinating as ever, some grand old ladies here. I'm sure I remember the Green Man advertising outside as a strip joint back in the 80's. Possibly an unreliable memory. Great to see the subscriber count rocketing now. 10k special soon I think!

I am desperate for a Sunday morning veggie breakfast at my local The Elms. The Elms Pub , Leigh on Sea started life as a farm. The house was built in 1861, and nearby stood a fine elm called Ellen's or Adam's Elm, which measured about thirty feet in circumference. It became the Elms Hotel in the 1930s. Sadly the tree didn't make it

I specially enjoy this video because during the portion where you talk about St Patricks, you were stood outside where I live! haha. Fun fact, behind the Blue and Black railings there, it was where the former Goodall Road School (Seen it referred to as Corpus Christi Senior High School?) stood, although I don't really know much about it other than the pictures I've seen shortly before it was demolished (not sure if you or anyone that watched this does know more about it?). The other fun fact, being the former road bridge you walked over, used to have the rear entrance to Leyton Station on it, before we lost that and the bridge to the A12.
Great vid. The Plough & Harrow is the only music venue where I've been part of an audience which was heckled by the performers. Good times!

Great stuff... I bet all those pubs are looking after their staff bar Mr Wetherspoon Mr Tim Martin who did of course tell his whole nationwide staff to go and get a job at Tesco when this all began. The Red Lion looked great. Note to self two litre water bottle for the next one which when you are hydrated you can fill with draft ale! Thx for sharing :D

A great watch, as always, John. Of particular interest to me was the reference to the Wanstead Tap. I lived in Station Road (Forest Gate!), which becomes Winchelsea Road (Leytonstone?). If anyone had told me back in the day that someone would open a bar in the railway arches I would have laughed myself silly/sillier. As you may imagine, I really enjoy your Wanstead Flats stuff. Keep up the good work and keep safe.
Glad to see the Heathcote's still around ( though not serving enough real ale) - I used to see folk gigs there - Martin Simpson once.The dilemma in a pub crawl (though long gone for me) is whether to miss out on a pint of the best, or your favourite, ale in a extremely comfortable pub. I preferred the latter and then the abandonment of the crawl - followed by a visitation to the pubs you missed out on later.So in fact many pub crawl's should never be completed out of respect for great ales and the pubs. I shall raise a glass of strong ale to you John when my local Wetherspoons, the King's Forde, reopens - I look forward to it. I'll also try out the Red Lion, the Byrds, The Filly Brook and the North Star - sooner than later I hope.
Great walk john, ive noted some of those pubs, that northcote looks full of character, Last time i went to orients ground would have been 2015, a pub on leabridge road had the orients teams letters to family from ww1, was very moving to read, great walk as ever cheers john.
out here in Thailand one a few things I miss is the Traditional English Pub and the Quality Ales and Beers that go with it, I hear its a very expensive pastime nowadays, nice to see a Pie n Mash shop as well.
I think you'll find that Hank Wangford was also a medic... Proper job. An amazing ale...

This was a joy to watch. The only one of these I can remember from my childhood was the landmark Green Man and then the Red Lion from my teens.
Love you to do a 'crawl' around Leyton. Friend's parents were landlords of one but sadly I cannot remember pub's name or location. Somewhere near St Mary's.
Oh yes...Cathall Road. We used to pronounce it Cat-Hall. Swam in the baths there. Not great even the 60s! Bakers Arms better.
Cowley Arms was on the corner of Cathall rd and leytonstone high rd. Then a few doors up you had the Brittania
That ale at the end looked amazing.
A packet of pork scratchings and I would have needed a lay down.
My spiritual home. I miss Leyton/Leytonstone. I used to live near the king Harold , I know it's called the Leyton Star now.

One thing that may or may not be worth pointing out is that most of the high Road pubs are in considerably newer buildings than the original dates.
The Red Lion is largely an Edwardian building while the Bell, The Plough and Harrow and The Green Man are all 1930s replacements.
The Thatched house, of course, is a Victorian replacement for an earlier pub, but that's long closed down.
One pub that was a building site when you made the video is the Rookwood Village on Cann Hall Road, originally the Lord Rookwood it closed down several years ago, was due to be demolished and replaced with flats, and all the fittings were stripped out, is now a pub again, opened about a month ago at the beginning of September.
