    If you wish to get great blending on hotpress paper.. Wet the paper first.. Quite wet is what you want. Then wait and watch the shine on the paper. When the shine disapears then paint. You might want to try just touching the paper with your paint brush what ever colour you choose.. Let it dry then wet it all , or just an area. Same thing wait for shine to go, then drop in your paint. GIve it a try.. I think you will like it. Want a tip. Look up Susan Harrison Tustain.. She uses only hotpress and if you watch her work you will be amazed... Nice paints by the way..

      Everything you said in your comment was spot on.. Additionally.. paper varies greatly from one mfg to the next regardless of it's designation of hot or cold press .. sizing makes a difference as well. As do staining and non staining pigments .. even the brand of watercolor can affect the process. To say everything is due to hot or cold press is misleading to those unfamiliar with watercolor and all the varied nuances ...

      I m planing to buy papers. Bt im confused which should I buy. Hot pressed or cold pressed??

    Also worth considering that different paints/pigments have different lifting properties. So regardless of which paper you're using phthalo blue (staining) won't lift easily but cobalt blue (non-staining) can be lifted much more easily and effectively.

    These cards are so pretty. I like the idea of creating this type of watercolor background and using stamps over it. I am enjoying that watercolor class as well!

    Ah yes, like a commenter below mentioned, the paint you use would have different degrees of staining. Dye based paint stain while mineral pigment based do not and will lift easily.

    Thank you so much for this comparison between hot and cold press wc paper. One of my stamping teachers has always said she uses hot press wc paper for stamping because of its smoother surface, which lets her get a smoother image print.

    a part of the reason the first card paint didnt lift was because you used staining colours

  • @sharonbayger5387
    @sharonbayger5387 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Im thinking that because you applied heat to set the ink it may have set the watercolor more so that it wasn't as easily lifted. Just guessing

    You used more water than necessary. That is why it caused the warping. If you stretch the paper first it can be avoided. Pretty cards!

  • @CrimsonStigmata
    @CrimsonStigmata 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The warping issue can be addressed a few different ways.
    First way is to turn them over and give the back a sprites or just use your brush with clean water and give them a once over the back. Put them inside a clean and dry container with a lid. They artwork is going to be face down and the back is going to be face up. Hence why it needs to be clean. After about an hour they should be flat.
    Second method is just put them in a folder or a book and keep constant pressure on them to keep it flat.

    I know this is off-topic, but I thought I'd go ahead and ask here since this video deals with watercoloring: have you used Pilot's Frixion pens with watercoloring? If they don't bleed with water (and I don't know if they do or don't) it seems like they'd be far easier to "get rid of" than pencil lines (as some colors lock the graphite in (as you know, of course!)). I haven't tried it yet, but thought I'd ask you if you'd ever tried them. Now I'll insert some awfully trite, but awfully true, words of appreciation: I love your work and am so grateful for all the advice you supply!!

    Hi, I bought one of those quilled precision tips for my matte medium bottle and loved it so much but then one day I went to use it and I couldn't get any out of it through the tip, I tried unscrewing it to see if it was clogged, it wasn't but nothing was coming out! any tips?

    It is interesting, that you want to create backburns (cauliflower or how you call them blooming effects) as an aesthetic element. I found most of the watercolor artist are trying to avoid them at all costs, and my opinion is also that most of the time it is not a happy accident. More like ugly spots drawing away attention from the overall impression of an image. Sorry for being outspoken.

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the type of aesthetic you're going for. Smooth watercolor painting wouldn't want blooms. But in this case, I wanted them.

    Did you get any peeling of the paper when you was trying to lift the color.

  • @everythingart7566
    @everythingart7566 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason that the colour wasn't lifting is because the colours were made with diy some colours that lift easier are colours that are made with natural minerals

    OT: do you always adhere your sequins dome side up?

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mary Ann Evans Your best bet is to find the paper in a local art store and then watch for sales or coupons. As for the sequins, I always adhere them this way (like cup sitting on a table).

    They likely warped because you had such a high concentration of water on such a small part of the paper. When the water absorbs into the paper in only one small section it swells in that place but is locked in from moving anywhere else. After you finish your painting maybe take a clean wet brush and wet the rest of the paper. Also tape the entire paper down until dry.
