Good evening! And many thanks to everybody for over 9,400 subscribers - I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos! This evening, we're back on Tyneside in the land of the 'Sandancers', the historic town of South Shields! Much like its neighbour across the river in North Shields, South Shields has found itself at the forefront of the history of the Tyne for centuries, seeing everything from industrial development to war. We mentioned that the town was one of the worst-affected in the Blitz of 1941, but just a few decades before in 1916, South Shields also fell victim to zeppelin air raids by the German Empire. Fortunately, the town has always continued to rise as one of Tyneside's best-loved communities :)
I'm so glad to hear it! And I really hope this video brought back some nice memories of South Shields for you - it's a great town and as you mention the locals are wonderful indeed :)
SYMPA CE BEAU CIEL D'AZUR AU P'TIT DÉJ DANS CETTE JOLIE P'TITE VILLE AUX MONUMENTS SPLENDIDES !.. ET QUEL PASSÉ !.. SUPERBE LES SCULPTURES ET LA STRUCTURE DE OLD TOWN HALL !.. LA SÉRÉNITÉ DE ST. HILDA'S CHURCH CONTRE VENT ET MARRÉE ... EST IMPRESSIONNANTE !.. SUPER MERCI LET'S WALK !.. BIEN À VOUS !..
Merci beaucoup!
I would like to congratulate South Tyneside Council for turning what was once a busy town into a ghost town . Due to extortionate rent and car parking fees and fines. Well done and they all got a bonus ! Look at all of the people going to the shops to spend money.
it does looks very grim and sad along King Street - my memories of it are back in the 70s stepping into Binns which always was a bit posh and so many people going about their business busling and full of life
Thank you for a superb video, I really enjoyed finding out about the rich history of South Shields. What a treat to see the roman site at the end of the tour, it's very impressive. I look forward to your next video 👏
Thank you so much! I'm really glad to hear you found the video an interesting watch - South Shields is full of captivating history, and the Roman fort is just the icing on the cake :)
101 places to build officers but no had to destroy people's livelihoods to build them on the river front the council have done a great job of destroying the town and haven't done a lot for the town or if they have to little to late ps love the channel Awesome 👍
Oh goodness, how Shields has changed since I lived there as a child and visited it every single school holiday to stay with my Nana. We would walk every day from High Shields down to Ocean Road and to the Pier. The long walk along the Pier, my thoughts always of the long walk back to Regent Street. Seeing this brought back some memories (although many changes). So good to see the old Town Hall in the marketplace and St Hildas Church. I also caught a glacé of Minchella’s. Loved their ice cream. My Nana would sometimes buy me a small glass of ice cream with strawberry sauce on top, yum. Thank you for this video. Oh the memories and my lovely Nana.
It certainly is a beautiful beach - like so many of the spectacular sands along this part of the coast! As I'm sure you know, it's quite the walk from the town centre towards the beach - but it's certainly great for a full day out :) Thank you so much for watching!
Great video, packed full of info. Guts me as a south tynesider seeing the town centre look the way it is now, practically a ghost town. Also ive never considered myself a geordie, always a sand dancer.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - South Shields is a fascinating town, and is certainly undergoing a lot of changes! It'll definitely be a proud home of the sandancers in future :)
As a kid I remember the ships in the Tyne, the many shipyards... Lots of workers and lots of busy shops in King St,... And even buses and cars in King St... It was so busy...... Sadly its become a nature walk proudly showing what once was...... So sad..... I do hope the council tax does not go up again this year.... £128 a month is a pain.
Awesome walk today in the town, I enjoyed it. Very beautiful and historical the medieval buildings are. Your history lessons are always great and educational. And your walks are always enjoyable and great. Can't wait to see more soon. How is your week going? Mine is going great 👍. Have a great day greetings from Canada 😀
Thank you for your most interesting presentation. I was born and brought up just around the corner from the Brack Memorial Hall (better known as Baring Street Methodist Church!). Shields was a vibrant, thriving town in those days, and in many ways is now a shadow of its former self. The town planners seem intent on completing the job that the Luftwaffe started, unfortunately. Still, I am proud to call myself a Sand dancer. One minor correction. The Great North Run from Newcastle to South Shields is a half-marathon, which I believe is longer than 4 miles. Excellent work, thank you.
I enjoyed this video so much, a huge thank you for your efforts on what looks like a lovely sunny day in Shields. The history is fascinating, as someone who has lived overseas since the early 80s I still have such font memories of the old place back in the 70s and early 80s all my family who came from seafaring stock are from SS and visits to the beach or the market square on a weekend are firmly imprinted in my memory. Did William Woodhalve get his idea for the self righting life boat from observing a coconut or did I just imagine that? Also the heroine who rowed out with her dad to save sailors from a ship run aground during a storm is also immortalised along Ocean road if memory serves. Will be checking out your other walks and thanks once again! Cheers from Malaysia!
My apologies the girl who saved lives was Grace Darling and her father that was at Seahouses just south of South Shields en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Darling incredibly heroic story and such amazing characters that stems from this area. Tragically died of TB at aged just 26 but as a result of her heroic deeds became a national hero
Certainly some trees can always bring some wonderful natural character to a town - hopefully a few will spring up in the coming years just as you suggest :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Indeed they did! It just goes to show the long, long, long history of South Shields, and how it's found itself at the forefront of English history :) Thank you so much for watching!
Who knows indeed! Both sides of the Tyne have their strengths, South Shields also has a spectacular seaside a little further out of town, with a bigger beach and more attractions than in North Shields and King Edward's Bay in Tynemouth :) Thank you so much for watching - I do hope you enjoyed the video!

Very good I grew up in South Shields Left there in 154 when I went to sea This was an excellent description of the town

I miss trees and greenery, these wide streets are crying out for them. Let's walk
Certainly some trees can always bring some wonderful natural character to a town - hopefully a few will spring up in the coming years just as you suggest :)

Apparently Vikings ransacked St Hilda's site when raiding England
Indeed they did! It just goes to show the long, long, long history of South Shields, and how it's found itself at the forefront of English history :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Childhood memories of school holidays going to Whitby
Heartbreaking when i was in my 20s this place was buzzing
Have heard bad things about south shields but it looks quite nice to be fair. A lot of people say north is better. But who knows haha
Who knows indeed! Both sides of the Tyne have their strengths, South Shields also has a spectacular seaside a little further out of town, with a bigger beach and more attractions than in North Shields and King Edward's Bay in Tynemouth :)

The boy during the Kirkpatrick statue part goes to my school 😭
In before comments blow up
Place has gone to the dogs. Ghost town unfortunately.
Newcastle owns south Shields 😂😂😂
North Shields better than south 😂😂😂😂
