  • In the clothing industry, you rarely hear the phrase "Made in America". The founder of American Giant, Bayard Winthrop decided that the iconic hoodie sweatshirt would be a great place to start. In this episode of Makers", John takes a tour of their San Francisco cut and sew facility.

    There are still some clothing manufacturers here in Massachusetts but may not be easy to work with as with Asian ones

    everybody commenting on the asians is living in a small town microcosm mindset. the usa is huge. my state majority is mexican. im sure you would have something to say if this factory was all mexican. this is made in america.

    Prisons should teach these skills to non-violent offenders so that upon release they may do something other than crime.

      +Phillip S They teach them, but it won't matter if they are still seen as criminals. Employers won't hire them because of that history. Though now ex-cons no longer have to divulge that info if they don't want to.

    Made by Chinese women but it doesn't mean they are bad. Most clothings are made by Chinese women, I'm talking about high brand products like BUrberry and Lacoste. You just don't know. It's just that this CEO is showing the video of what really goes on behind the scene. I'm sure the boss pays these women a good amount of money. It's better than the labor they get paid to do in China. This man is giving these women the opportunity

    Hey who've never been to California: there a lot of Asians there. The fact is no young American wants a job sewing. They're too lazy. They'd rather try and be famous on TH-cam or Twitter.That's why it was all old Asians working there.

    Asian made in USA.

    • @aaaneta
      @aaaneta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just because they were not born in the US does not mean that it is made in China.
      You are supporting the american economy. The most skilled workers are women that come to N.America from overseas. Those are the options we are offered today. The North American garment manufacturing business died decades ago, there aren't any American born sewers to choose from, trust me. And would that even be legal to hire only American born sewers? That is called discrimination.
      See my discussion above with Panthers1521 to understand more :)
      It's a lot more complicated than you think

    • @sofronova
      @sofronova 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Unfortunately there aren't many american-born operators left in the US or Canada with sewing skills because the market is almost non existent... you have to hire the most experienced person, even if they are immigrants. Be proud that you are supporting american made with fair wages, no sweat shops and no child labor.

    • @Panthers1521
      @Panthers1521 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      sofronova I hear you but this is great for the US, from the cost of operations that the owner pays for local utilities to the money the workers take home and spend on domestic goods such as food, clothing, housing...

    • @aaaneta
      @aaaneta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Panthers1521 Haha maybe you misread but that's exactly what I mean :)
      We should be happy and willing to support these goods made in the USA or Canada regardless of the workers being born here or not. I was not born in Canada, I came here when I was 5 from Europe and now I am running a fashion business all made in Canada. Everyone was an immigrant to North America down the line (unless you are native of course).
      These workers are being paid fare wages, whether or not they were born here and I am very happy to support that.
      My point was that they are the most skilled workers to choose from. A lot of women overseas have the best operational skills when it comes to this type of factory work and they are proud of it.
      Not to mention.. a lot of the american-born sewing machine operators are very old now and do not exist because that market died decades ago. I work in this industry and there is sadly not a lot to choose from when it comes to american/canadian made goods.
      And like you said, it's more than just supporting a clothing brand that's being made here, it's supporting an entire industry and everything that it links to in order to operate... be it hydro, fabric mills, suppliers for all trims, etc etc
      SUPPORT LOCAL! :)

      +sofronova I truly wonder if this business is practicing fair wages

    • @aaaneta
      @aaaneta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are located in the USA, they are legally obligated to pay fair wages. Made overseas? You can almost guarantee the wages are not fair. People should be supporting this company yet they are shitting on them based on the very little knowledge they have on this industry. Pretending to know anything about it...
      I've been working in the fashion industry for a while now - what they are doing is amazing, trust me.

    The big problem with hoodies is the hood. No one wants it. The best hoodie I ever had didnt have a hood and I have not been able to find one since. Too bad i don't work for that company, i could double their sales within 12 months.

    • @Scout555
      @Scout555 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I see tons of people wearing their hoods up in cold cities like NYC. The hoodie in the video is great - it's roomier than most.

  • @Drownedinblood
    @Drownedinblood 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    This guy is probably making a boatload off gullible fools. What justifies the price tag? the material is still just cotton, no matter where you get it from, it's cotton which is actually a pretty shitty insulator and good at absorbing water which makes it an even worse insulator. The workers don't look like they are even paid minimum wage.

    • @Drownedinblood
      @Drownedinblood 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      badlydrawnkid6 I know, but cotton is usually a cheap fabric hence why damn near everything wearable is made of it. I'm just expecting more for the price you pay for this hoodie, namely it having superior qualities to a hoodie you can get for much cheaper. I've heard the cut is supposedly superior, but is anyone really going to notice or care? it's a hoodie ffs.
