Iris corms are supposed to be 1/2 out of the ground. If they are fully covered, they kind of smother, the corms need the air and sun on them. I have made that mistake, almost lost the lot, until a neighbor told me why they were failing.

I didn't realize they grew from anything other than bulbs, and was really wondering until I looked it up. I recall years ago they were getting ready to demolish a house across the street from us here, and there was a beautiful bed of red and yellow tulips in front of it that I tried to rescue. Those bulbs were a foot to 18 inches underground! I kept digging and digging - took forever to get to the bulbs! Those tulips were determined - the house had been empty for years and they came up every spring! But from the surface, they looked to be growing from mostly rocks.

And remove the seed pods that form from the flowers. You don't want the plants spending their energy on seeds., when they need to be growing and spreading the corms

Thank you 1977islander. I was about to post the same thing. The tubers need to be above ground as that is where the flower and leaves grow from. You only put the root in the dirt.

It would be cool to take pictures of you four standing in front of each new tree and repeat that same photo every year or so for memories. I’ve seen a lot of old timey photos of homesteaders (1800 -1950’s) in front of their property and it’s so cool to see how proud they are of their accomplishments. I’m so proud of all that you are building and growing. Your boys have the best childhood experience a parent can give and the best parents ever. ❤ God Bless your home. Your friend from Indiana.

When planting in clay add 1/3 sand and 1/3 compost to 1/3 of the clay in the hole for best drainage. Empty the hole and fill with water. Don’t put the tree in the hole until the water soaks in so it doesn’t get root rot. I lived on a tree farm for ten years.

The tubers like to be above ground, just put dirt on the roots of the iris. They will bloom better. They survive well in poor soil.

Just be careful not to put the mulch and compost to close and to thick around the trunk of the new trees. It could cause rot.

My favorite part of watching this is Elijah. He will remember the day y'all planted these trees. Glad you saved the iris. My favorite flower!❤Lil tip about iris...that tuber which is a rhizome likes to be above ground. Never bury that part completely. I have over 200 iris. I know everything about them. They love for the rhizome to soak in the sun. Snap the dead flowers off as soon as they die so it will put its energy into the rhizome instead of making seed. Don't cover rhizome with mulch.

Nice job - as someone else has commented, the rhizomes need the sun directly on them, especially in August and September to flourish. I think conventional gardening (in the UK at any rate) wisdom is also that if you transplant plants then you should remove the blooms so that the energy goes into the roots for the first year to help them establish better.

Sam, something I learned from a landscaper many years ago. If your tree is root bound, take a hatchet to the root system to make them reach out and seek nutrients and water. It makes for stronger root systems, and better tree growth.
