2023 W-4 forms are due to employers by February 15th.
"How should I fill out my W-4?"
I honestly don't know how many times I'm asked this question a year or even a month.
Since HR can't help you I have decided to create this quick video to walk you through how to fill it out if you are single. This video does not cover multiple jobs or dependents. I will cover multiple jobs next week. This video covers:
-The purpose of the form
-Who should select single
-A tip for self-employed individuals that also work a W-2 job and would like to withhold extra for self-employment tax.
(I cover what self-employment tax is on my podcast, Tax Relief with Timalyn Bowens - www.americasfa... )
This video is done as preventative care to help you avoid having a tax debt you can't pay in full and becoming my client.
However, if you have run into a problem with your withholding before and it's under $50,000, you can pay it off in 36 months, and you're tax compliant you may be eligible to set up a payment arrangement right now online.
If so, I walk you through how to do that in my E-book, Guaranteed Payment Plan : www.americasfa...
If you found this video helpful let me know in the comments!
I look forward to connecting with you.

You’re the only video that in the comment section you answered it directly. You mentioned this is the new form you mentioned the allowance doesn’t matter now and you mentioned that the govt will calculate it for us. Thank you for getting straight to the point and answering everyone’s questions
Thank you so much! I try to be thorough and cut the fluff.

I liked the video. But it still does not address a concern that I have, as a single individual filing taxes over the years. For quiet sometime in past years, I have had to pay the IRS, despite filing out my W4 form the correct way. For example, on the line which read, "enter 1 for yourself if no one can claim you as a dependent," I did just that. But I realized for several years of filling out my W4 form that way, I still ended up owing. It wasn't until I entered 0, that I got a refund. However, this 2023 W4 form does not give you the option to enter 1 or 0 for yourself. It just gives the option to check a box, based on your status...which in my case I am single. So, what must I do to have just the right amount of deductions withdrawn from my paycheck, so that I do not owe the IRS?
Well Tyran, the W4 form was updated after the TCJA. There hasn't been an option to put 1 or 0 for yourself since 2018 or so.
With that being said, it's possible that your employer had you filling out an old W4 if this is the first time you're noticing it being gone.
4c you can choose to have additional money withheld. I have a client who does this because he always has dividend income and capital gains from stock sales. So if he chose not to put anything on 4c he'd also owe a little bit.
@@AmericasFavEA
Okay. Thank you. I noticed that from the beginning of the 2023 tax year, less money is being deducted from my paycheck, although my payrate and hours remained the same. I will do the 2023 W4 form today and see if anything changes. If I fill out the form correctly, as you demonstrated in the video, and my employer makes the correct deductions, then it's all on the IRS, if I still end up owing. I will take the IRS to court. I know seeing this you this you might think to yourself that it all based on whether I fill out the W4 form correctly and my employer makes the correct deductions...not the IRS.
can I still file for my child if she is 18 years old and 5 months
I’m mad that 12 years of school never taught us anything about taxes 😭
I feel you. We have to make sure that changes for our future taxpayers.
i was just coming here to say that lol🤣😭
Factssss I always say thatt...
You're never too old to be coachable... Thank you so much. I have been trying to understand this new W4 form.
You are so welcome!
It’s 2024 and I was so stumped when the “online portal” for new employer had me complete the state and federal info..it put me on pause i over thought it all thanks!
You're welcome!
This was super helpful, can you please make one about filling it out for someone with more than 1 job. Thank you!!
I'm so glad you found it helpful Alexandria. The video for married filing jointly goes over the table you should use if you have multiple jobs. I also go over it on my blog, Tax Tips with Timalyn. You can find it here: www.bowenstaxsolutions.com/taxtipswithtimalyn
So glad I found you lord knows I’m stressing on how to fill this form out correctly I somehow owe this year 😢 and wanted to fill this form out correctly so it don’t happen next year I do have a daughter who’s now 21 and not in college so I can’t claim her as a dependent correct also I don’t believe I can claim hoh that I’ll have to claim single I can’t figure out wether I should put single or hoh anymore I don’t want to owe but do want to receive a refund as well upon how can I fix this
Hello. Did you make the video of a single person with multiple jobs? I didn't see it. I'm currently completing my form and I am STUCK! i love how you make the videos separate for each different situation.
This was actually sort of fun to watch, and helpful, thank you!
Yay
Thank you for explaining the single w4 form 😊
You are so very welcome.
Question, as a single person should I put more into my 401k ?
Hi, I'm glad I got to watch your video. This is my first time being single and no children at home. My question is. If I are now single ,no Dependence. Where do I put the number one at? In regards to myself.
We don't currently have exemptions. So there's no spot to put 0-99. As of right now exemptions are set to come back after 2025.
What a Very Nice Beautiful Women 🙋🏾♂️ This took tons of stress levels off my dam back by simply explaining this in simple words. Dam companies and government and youtubers in general tryna explain this make it so harder than it got to be just make this simple like how you made this video simple explaining it and the world would be such a better place THANK YOU VERY MUCH 🔥
Thank you very simplistic and informative other videos didn’t dumb it down enough
You're welcome! It's my pleasure.
Yes this was very helpful....trying to help my daughter......I have not had a job in years,,and this form has changed tremendously........I kept thinking she needed to put a,1 or a 0....? But no more......do you also have a video for state forms..??
No more 1s or 0s for now. That went away with the Tax Cuts and Job Act. But they may be back after 2025 😬.
No, I'm sorry. I do not have a video for state W4s.
@AmericasFavEA I would imagine the state forms have changed alot too.....😪
@beepatrick7856 states get the opportunity to do what they want 😪. But most are similar to the Federal W4.
3 things, Friday, Brady Brunch, and thank you so much.
You're welcome!
My thing is - how can I keep the government for taking THE MOST tax out now ??? Since I can’t claim the allowance on this new form. Please reply because I need answers.
Great question Fay! The "new" (since TCJA) W-4s are already designed to withhold the least amount so that you don't owe. The only other things to add are if you have children or additional deductions.
@@AmericasFavEA I've been trying to figure this out since my company changed my allowance from 1 to 0. Which, I need more money throughout the year. Since on the new forms, there's no place to put 1, does that mean 0 is the allowance across the board now? And more will be taken out? Thank you in advance!!
@@TiffanyMartin2204 less is actually withheld now.
@@AmericasFavEA thank you so much! I appreciate your help and time!
@@AmericasFavEAhi I need to know is it zero all the way down because you didn’t quite clarify that part of her question which is my question.
Thank you can you do a video on how to feel out form W-4 single with no dependence? I would appreciate it
With no dependents and one income you can check the single box and sign.
Thank you so much! This was very helpful!
🙏🏾 You're welcome
this was so helpful! thank you for the efficient and easy to understand format!
You're welcome and thank you for the feedback.
Thanks this was helpful
Glad it helped
Thank you. I did all what you said. I worked only 9 hours on my first pay roll and they only took out Medicare and Social Security. I filled out Step 1 and Step 5. What did I do wrong?
You're welcome! Your 9 hours is well beneath the standard deduction. So they wouldn't have withheld any Federal taxes yet
"Friday" is Wednesday Addams middle name- Thank You for the very informational video regarding the W-4 form!
You're very welcome ! Thanks for checking out the video.
So basically just put in my personal information and file single no extra numbers involved right ?
This is correct.
Wednesday Addams' middle name is FRIDAY! 😎😎
Thanks so much for sharing this video. You are greatly appreciated, and you've just earned a NEW SUBBIE!
Thank You! 🙏🏾
I'm glad you found it helpful. I didn't know her middle name until my daughter told me. ❤
I have a question, so how do I fill this out as single - no dependents without having to owe at tax filing time?
1 stream of income? Check the box as single and sign.
Your video is so helpful, thank you!
You are very welcome!
By filling out the form this way, with only, “single”, marked,…
Does it mean you’re claiming “1”, for yourself?
We don't have exemptions under the TCJA. Claiming yourself would be taking into account the exemption.
Marking as single does take into account the standard deduction for a single taxpayer.
you are a blessing! thank you!
You're so welcome!
Such an excellent video! Great explanations and very easy to understand!
Thank you!
I’m literally at the library filling out my docs for a job. I felt like you was talking to me
😁
Thank you very easy and helpful.
You are welcome, the pleasure is mine.
She starts filling out the form at 2:40
So what would you put in 4b if you want more money back?
To get more back you'd have to have more additional withholding and get less throughout the year.
It was very helpful and thank you for your videos and sharing your wisdom and Wednesday's middle name is Friday
It's my pleasure.
Thanks so much for the information!
You're welcome!
This was very helpful, thanks for your help.
You're very welcome!
So the new form essentially doesn't allow you to claim yourself as 1 anymore?
There are no longer exemptions on the tax return. So there is no place for you to put an exemption on the W-4.
I just don’t want the government taking all them taxes out of my check will this still help me
It will help you not owe at the end of the year. They're going to get their cut during the year or with a penalty added if you want until April.
This was helpful. Thank you! My filing will be similar to this example. Single. No kids. One question I have - for deductions. How do I know how much to put in deductions if I do contribute to my 401k? Or maybe plan to use other tax credits like EV? Etc? Ultimatumly my goal is to have the least amount withheld as possible. Thanks again
I'm glad you found this helpful! I suggest using the IRS withholding calculator tool to get a more exact number for your 401k contributions and credits outside of the child tax credit. I recently wrote an article on the EV credit. Which one are you looking at?
I wanted to know is this a example of how to get a refund at the end of the year ? Single no dependent and one job … and taking out in each paycheck to avoid paying at the end of the year ?Don’t know how to file it out correctly .. help
This is an example is to break-even, not to get a refund. If you want a more exact number you can use the IRS withholding calculator on the IRS website.
Hello how do you get the most money per check and which line do I put it on? This has been the worst no one knows it’s round and round and I’m single adult children and they take a lot out in taxes. No one can tell me! if I claim 2 or 3 where on this form do I put that number?
The W4s changed under the TCJA and went into effect in 2018. There is no place to put a number because we don't currently have exemptions.
If you do receive a refund it will be smaller if you put something on line 3.
I’m filling single and I want all my money. I want zero of it taking out, do I just fill out the top part and sign the bottom?
Yes, for the least amount. To have no Federal taxes, which I don't recommend, you'd need to go exempt.
Hi I recently filed my taxes, but I was informed that I had to redo my W-4’s for both my jobs. Single with no dependents but since I have 2 jobs I’m lost on how to properly fill out a w-4. If you could please help I’ll really appreciate it. Thank you!!
That trips a lot of people up, don't feel bad. You'll use the worksheet included in the packet to figure out how much extra withholding you need on line 4c. I the worksheet in the Married Filing Jointly video - th-cam.com/video/dp_fm_s-K8g/w-d-xo.html
@@AmericasFavEA yes so true! I’ll go ahead and look at it. Thank you so much!!♥️
"Friday" based off her birthday. Also, do I not at least put "0" in 3-4?
No need to put it unless your HR person insists. It will default to 0.
My question is that if I haven’t done a new w-4 since I’ve started working with my job (10years) and I claimed 0 , no dependents are they still taking out the most until I do this new w-4 form ? Is that when I put single and my tax deductions from my paychecks will be lower ? PLEASE ADVISE
You may see a change. The new W4 is designed for them to withhold the least and you still not owe.
There won't be much of s buffer once you update your W4.
very helpful thanks.
You're welcome
I filled my form out like this and no taxes were being taken out. If anything i may have missed checking single but i doubt it. Its really nothing that can be done incorrectly in this scenario. Can u think of why taxes isnt being taken out
Do you have dependents listed? Is the pay for the entire year less than $14k? Those are the 2 reasons that come to mind first.
So what if too much is being withheld and I want you to claim myself?
We haven't had exemptions since 2018 so there is no way to claim yourself.
@@AmericasFavEA so basically I just have to overpay the government?
@jamilaector6384 that's essentially what a refund is. If you have or other deductions you can account for them on the W4. Otherwise this W4 is designed for you to break even, not get a big refund.
ok so a question on this info....so when HR received the form the. next pay check they did not take anything out of federal at all....they then said it's because i didn't put down an amount....i honestly don't think my HR knows what should be done....im at a 12% tax brack bracket getting only 150 taking out if of federal when i have gross of 1500....it doesn't make sense to not take anything out....what am i doing wrong
Great question JB! We have a progressive tax system. This means that not all of your income will be taxed at 12%. Your first $10,275 of taxable income will be taxed at 10% and the amount over that will be taxed at 12%.. Also, any contributions to a traditional retirement plan or HSA will reduce your taxable income. Hope that helps!
How do you sign an online form? print and scan and fax or email, or can you just type in full name? You didn't address that.
That will be up to your employer.
I've seen certain companies allow it to be done on Docusign and others have an online portal system they have employees complete it on. The W4 is something that stays on file with the employer. It doesn't go to the IRS so it's up to the employer's discretion.
Thank you!
Thank you for this video! I have a question will enough taxes be taxed to keep us from owing after submitting this form? Is this something our HR figures up for us based on our salary? I’m very shocked at how simple this is 🙌🏾😅
This is to help you break even. Taking the exemptions away did make it fairly simple 😅. This form tells HR how much to withhold.
@@AmericasFavEA awesome! Thanks again!! 😁🙌🏾 excuse my typo in my question, I just noticed it I’m like Guh what did you write?? Lol I fixed it now lol.
Haha! No worries 👍🏾
This was helpful but if I’m renting my own place should I just change single to head of house and leave everything else blank. No kids no other job.
Great question Annie! Filing status isn't determined by whether or not you rent/own/live in your own place. It is for single taxpayers with dependents. I'm glad you found this helpful.
Thank you so much for responding. ❤
@@annieratliff9130 you're welcome!
You would need a qualifying dependent to be HOH
So where do you claim yourself?
We don't exemptions anymore. So there is no place to claim yourself. Those went away with the TCJA under our former administration. They will likely be back after 2025.
@@AmericasFavEA so I have 2 jobs. My part time job didn't with hold enough federal taxes. How do I fix that?
Use the chart and add additional income on line 4c.
Step 3 wait you said filling single with out kids. so it would apply to me. but i dont have dependents. so i claim myself ?
If you don't have dependents you can leave 3 blank.
Very helpful!!!! ❤
❤️
This helped me a lot !! Thank you !!! 😇
I'm so happy to hear that!
I’m still so confused. I’m so used to knowing myself as “single 0” but I want to add an exemption or however that’s referred to now.
Hi Erin,
We have not had exemptions on the 1040 since the TCJA. That's when the standard deduction doubled. That's why you don't see it here on the W-4.
Nice video I love it thanks
I'm glad you like it. Thank you!
Tks for this
My pleasure.
I filled out exactly like this but with 2 dependents, followed the tool and entered 4,000. But no FED taxes were held out of my paycheck. What am I missing?
Hi Stephanie! The withholding calculator may have figured your estimated liability to only be $4,000 when your W-4 information was entered so no Federal taxes would have been withheld. That would fall in line with someone making a certain amount of money.
How can I hire you to fill out my taxes? This is my first time. Could you please help me 🙏🏼
I'm not taking any new tax preparation clients and soon will no longer be offering tax preparation at all.
Is that really all it, it looks so empty? I’m single without any dependents and only have one job, so will my W4 look just like this example? So I don’t have to write down how much I want to be withheld from each paycheck on 4c?
4c is for additional withholding. It does look pretty empty compared to the W4s from before the TCJA
Hi, how do I fill this 2023 W4 form if I want my employer to take the least amount of taxes out from my commission pay check. I file single and have no dependent and I am on 100% commissions but getting pay in W2? Please kindly let me know and thank you 🙏
Hi Sharon, the new W-4s are designed for them to take out the least amount already. You'll only need to check the box that you are filing single.
@@AmericasFavEA ok thank you and I appreciate your response 😊
@@sharongoh8392 you're welcome
I'm single, itemize and currently claiming 1... I would like to change this to 2. Thoughts? I appreciate the explanation of the video! Thank you!
Hi Eric! You're welcome. On the 2023 W-4 there is no place to claim exemptions i.e. 1 or 2. Does your HR department have you filling out an up to date W4?
@@AmericasFavEA I'm understanding I'll need to do this although I'm currently claiming 1 and I don't see anywhere on the new W4 form about exemptions (already figured this out) but if I keep this rate up, I'll end up with a hefty refund.. trying to eliminate this as much as possible.
Update: I found out doing the worksheet gave me a number I needed for line 4b on the W4 form. Does that number need to be divided by the number of paychecks or left as is? Thank you again for your time!
Very helpful. Where do we put our allowance at ?
Hi Liz,
Allowances were on the old W4s. Form W4 was updated under the TJCA, so a few years ago now.
How do you fill out a w4 if you have two jobs?
You'll use the chart towards the back of the packet and opt into additional withholding. I go over that chart in the MFJ video.
You skipped 3 i have no dependents and tryed to file exempt it wouldn't let me help pleases
Section 3 is only for if you have dependents. The latest W-4 forms are made to have the least amount withheld. You can't go exempt or you'll owe.
This was great because I was losing my mind
🙏🏾 I'm glad you found it helpful and I was able to help you keep your sanity.
thanks for the help
You are welcome!
Muy util, muchas gracias.
@@emynoack7344 ¡ de nada!
I had 3 jobs in 2023, so do step 2 apply to me?
With 3 jobs I'd advise using the withholding calculator. Especially if one or two of those is part time. Because if the amount you made from any of the jobs is less than the standard deduction there likely has not been anything withheld for them.
Hi there! I’m currently getting too much withheld. I’m single, with no dependents and one job throughout the year. How do I fill out the form so LESS taxes are taken out and I get to keep more of my money? Please advise ❤️
Hi Akila - the default is for it to withhold the least amount as possible. Did you have a significant pay increase between this year and last?
@@AmericasFavEAI’m in her situation so should my W4 should say $0 all the way down because I have no kids and one job and I’m single. This is my first time using this form since my old jobs used the W4 form that allowed us to to put 1 for claiming ourselves and 1 being the least amount as possible since zero on that particular form meant more money coming out. This is the first I’ve seen this form…
@@ItsCherry504 hi! I wish I could report employers that didn't update the W-4 for you all since it has been this way for a few years now. To have the least amount withheld you'd only check the box marking single and sign the form. No other numbers added.
@@AmericasFavEA I also would like to add that I prefer to receive my same refund amount since I didn’t change jobs so do I put 1 on Step 4 letter C for “extra withholdings” to coincide with line 5 of the old W4? I need clarity on this part because I basically love my refund amount each year when I had the old form and I always had 1 for line 5 and since line 5 is now gone, does that mean I put it 1 on Step 4 of the new form or do I leave it alone and sign after I’ve filled out the top? Again, I don’t want to break even lol I want what I’ll usually get. What’s the best way to fill this out? (Reminder: I have no kids, and I’m single) but want to continue getting a refund that I usually get each year. The only thing changed is the form for my case. I appreciate your help.
@@ItsCherry504 🥲yes, to get a bigger refund you would have more withheld on 4C. You can figure the refund amount you want and divide that by the amount of pay periods you have and put that on 4C.
Is filing out section 4 always optional even if you do contribute to retirement? Thanks for your help-taxes can be so confusing
You're welcome. Taxes can be very confusing and that's why I'm here. Section 4 is always optional, although I recommend filling it out for people who have multiple streams of income.
So what if your married filing seperately?
The same brackets for single apply. You can put single or MFS.
Hey Timalyn, I am single with no dependents, can I skip steps 3 and 4 then… I even tried to use the IRS withhold calculator but it got me more confused…
Yes, you can!
So we no longer can put ourself as an dependent
Not since the Tax Cut and Jobs Act. You're already factored in when you put Single.
Do I have to mark 0 or 1 and then also under the extra withholding? What is the Minimum? Because I don't to owe like u did this last year but I don't want to pay to much either
If you have the option to put 1 or 0 it sounds like you have an old W4. The last year to put exemptions was 2017.
No sorry, these last two tax years i owed, so my question was as single do I claim 0 or 1 so that I don't owe for this year? But also do I have to put a minimum on extra withholding in order not to owe. I also do food delivery every now and then very loosely though. But I was talking more about my main job w4. Thanks!
@@jaysr707 understood. I was just saying there isn't even a space to put 1 or 0 on the 2024 W-4. You should just be checking the single box. You can choose to do additional withholding on line 4C. If the food delivery is contract work aka you receive a 1099 you can put the amount that you're estimating to receive on line 4a and withholding for that will be taken out from your W2 job.
Hi,How are you? In the old W-4 form before it was changed I use to claim Single and 0 to not risk owing anything on this new W4 Form if I just claim Single put my personal information and signature and leave everything else blank would that be consider as claiming Zero? Thank you!
The form is now designed to help you break-even. So you may not owe but I wouldn't anticipate a big refund.
Yeah I have also have had this issue. I despise them taking anything, but I absolutely loathe having to write a check at the end of the year after the holidays just concluded so I have always claimed single 0 as a safeguard against that. This new form throws that level of comfort out the window.
Thank you
You're welcome.
Hello thank you for the tutorial it was great, but I want to know how to complete form w4 for my job to deduct one month of taxes that were not taken out for the month of January . Do I just complete the top and sign it and mail to them ?
Hi Lucy! The additional amount you'd like withheld spread over the remaining periods.
For example if it's $500 you'd divide that number by how many paychecks you have remaining for the year.
Then put that number on 4c.
@@AmericasFavEA Thank you!
thanks
No problem
Is this just a 1 time payment/deduction?
Line 4c is for every pay perid.
@Timalyn Bowens, EA So, if this form is empty and only has my signature and the date, will federal taxes be taken?
If you make more than the standard deduction for you filing status, yes ma'am.
@@AmericasFavEA thank you! And, just to be clear, if we decide to do "Extra Withholdings", will it most likely lead to a tax refund? In other words, the federal taxes taken with this empty sheet will be enough? Or can that even be guaranteed? Is Extra Withholdings just moreso a cushion?
I guess my main question is, how can i let them take out what they need without overdoing it, but also not just give away my money and get it back later? I'll be going into my first job in my career and want to do this once and not rely on a big refund, nor be worried about paying a big amount when i go into tax season. How can I, knowing how much I will make, set myself up for success with this?

I haven't done a video covering how to include dependents. But there is one on the page that covers how to fill it out if you are Married Filing Jointly on this page right now. 🙏🏾 Best Wishes to You!
@@AmericasFavEA thank you. I haven’t messed with a w4 since 2018 lol. I remember once claiming 11 and once claiming 99. Just for a week or 2. Then paying more later. This video is for a single person with no dependents and one stream of income. If you're looking for multiple streams you follow the married filing jointly example or head of household if you need an example of how to do it with children.
Not very helpful you should figure out exactly how much needs to be witheld from every check & not let the government calculate it for you.
If you'd like something more exact I suggest using the withholding calculator.
You didnt say WHERE to put in dependants to take home more money in your paycheck??? This was a lame video!
Single - no dependents
Head of Household - unmarried with dependents.
