    Box elder is also known as Manitoba Maple. The hints of red in the wood are common in box elder, so I believe this is indeed box elder. In an6 event another beautiful job. I love that you explain your thought process when your dealing with issues in the wood. I always learn something from you. Thanks again.

      Thank you very much Ron. On these pieces I start with a general plan but as I go I may make adjustments so I learn something new a lot myself. Every piece can have it's own issues to deal with.

    Yes, it is definitely box elder. That little bit of red gave it away. Beautiful looking bowl 👍. Thanks again for sharing. Take care Gary 😊.

    You nailed it, box elder. Another name is Manitoba Maple. Once in a while you could run across some with no color. It’s pretty nice. But what most people want is loads and loads of that red color streaking throughout the wood.
    Great job turning it. The shape shows the grain of nicely. Thanks for sharing it.

      Thank you Doug. Yes lots of that red would have been nice. But I was grateful to be given this piece and the bigger one that is left.

    Good evening, Gary.
    I sure enjoyed watching the shavings fly off the wood. In the end a bowl was made. It is a perfect bowl with a very smooth looking finish. A delightful video. Thumbs up, my friend.

    I see some red in there so I'm going with Box Elder. But, as you say, it's a member of the Maple family so, not a lot of difference other than the red. You did a great job massaging this piece into submission. That little inclusion gives just enough nature to know this is real wood with it's inherent faults. Beautiful finish and you have a great bowl fit for any purpose. Great job, my friend, kieep'em coming! 😃

      Thanks buddy! I picked this because I thought the wood was soft and my shoulder was a little sore from the bike riding we did the week before.
      Well that backfired because it was really hard and a big surprise.
      And I was sure happy that inclusion was there because it needed a little something for sure.

    That bowl is an absolute beauty and to me it is box elder or Manitoba maple as we call it in Canada, because of the red streaks in it! Very pretty when you get that red in it and a burl is full of those red streaks and here in Canada a lot of the Manitoba maple has lots of burl in it, well done and thanks!

    box elder is a maple but not silver maple. I found this on google ( Ash-leaved maple (also known as box elder) is named for its compound leaves that resemble ash leaves, unlike other members of the maples (Acer). It is a fast-growing, though short-lived, tree that can tolerate stressful growing conditions.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Mike for your information on this wood. It was a mystery to me for sure. And the person who gave it to me was just getting into wood turning so maybe guessing.

    The timber suggests to me it is some kind of maple (acer). Watching you turn it reminds me of a few lumps of sycamore which I was given many years ago in the UK. Resulting in fruit and nut bowls, rolling pin, and bread board. Also I was given, at the time, a piece of eucalyptus burr which was turned into a bowl - one of the few artefacts I still have. Oh happy days!
    Keep up the videos!

    Agreed that it is box elder or in Canada also known as Manitoba Maple. Have turned lots of this stuff as Manitoba maple is not much good for anything else! LOL..... and the red parts of the wood are a really good indication too of the species. Another great project Gary!! Cheers, Ted

    Hello Gary,
    Definitely Box Elder. The chatoyancy is due to lots of swirling, interlocking grain and the red streaking is a fungal stain, with the color being characteristic of Box Elder. You had a very nice piece, and you did a good job brining out the unique artifacts. I like turning nice simple shapes like that because it really puts the wood itself centre-stage.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much Ryan! You know I feel exactly the same way. When I find wonderful grain I try and let it be front stage.
      Next week will be a prime example of that. I could not do anything to it to improve on the beauty I found inside.
      Hope you watch it as it is a very cool looking piece of wood.
      Thanks for watching,

    If it is Box Elder, it may be a different variety than what we have in East Texas. But, I really can't say what type of wood. So, I will name it "Chunk-O-Wood". Regardless, it turned out to be a very nice bowl. Thanks for sharing.

    • @ThePapa1947

      Thanks and that is a big issue as the same wood can look different depending on where it grows. I think I will stick with Boxelder and the person who gave it to me was very excited about giving me "Boxelder.

    I'd say it looks like box elder to me, probably a little bit older of a cut down. I got a bunch of box elder from my father in law that originally had a lot of red in it when they knocked it down (clearing ditches with the tractor), but a year later when we cut some up to turn bowls with, almost all the red was gone, and it looked just like that. Was a great wood to work with

    Thank You Gary... That is a picture perfect turning this morning. Gary I would not know a Box Elder tree. Probably have seen them but would not know it. Sooo many different/wonderful trees to explore. ... Just wondering Gary, with a turning like this with nothing catchy on the top edge. Why not apply your finish with the lathe running dead slow? Nothing to catch your rag and I would think the friction would help to sink the sanding sealer into the grain opposed to lightly applying with the hand? (perhaps my question is just the coffee talking) .. Always a FUN FRIDAY MORNING WAKE-UP watching you turn Gary. .. In this mass production/CNC perfect repeatability/cookie cutter production world which we all live in ( I have spent my life working at). I so much find pleasure out of watching & making one off unique pieces. Your perfect example this morning is exactly what my mental doctor has recommended. Each piece of wood has something new and different to offer with no two pieces the same.... Until next time Gary..... TM

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you tuffy and I am on my second cup of coffee so maybe I will be able to answer a few of those questions...but maybe not LOL
      I have put some finish on with the lathe spinning slow but then I wipe it all down with the lathe stopped.
      It tends to leave streaks with it running. Plus some finishes like shellac dry too fast to do it with it spinning.
      Polycrylic and wipe on poly dry slow enough to do it with it running.
      As you know I have a CNC milling machine and love it. But what I love about it is the creating of the product to be machined and the programing of that part. It can be interesting to watch it cut but I usually just walk away and go inside for a cup of coffee if it is a long run.
      I once programed my mill to turn some small spindles for someone. That was fun making the Z axis become the X axis of a lathe.
      Ok now I need more coffee!
      Take care,
      Gary

    Box Elder around here has a natural red colored streaking in the grain. I tirn quite a bit of it since it grows along the edge of our hay fiel along the creek.

    It does look like Acer negundo (Box Elder), but the specific gravity of Box Elder is only .49, which puts it in company with woods like poplar and butternut. I've been told Box Elder produces that red in response to injury, but maybe there's a harder maple that does that also. I don't know a hard maple that does that though.
