Celestron EclipSmart Solar Filter Review

  • The Celestron EclipSmart Solar Filter is an excellent product for observing the sun. The filter itself is very lightweight and looks fantastic on Celestron Schmidt Cassegrain telescopes. The filter does its job, blocking out 99.999% of all light it is exposed to.
    My favorite feature is how secure the solar filter attaches to the telescope. It attaches to the telescope the same way the dust-cover attaches to the telescope, which provides a very safe and secure fit. Additionally it comes with Velcro straps if you want it to be even more secure.

    You forgot the most important thing. What do you see when using this filter besides the solar disc? Sunspots, prominences, solar dynamic activity, etc. How does it perform?

    • @ThatDamnPandaKai
      @ThatDamnPandaKai 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You'll only see the disc and sunspots. Prominences, filaments, etc are only visible with a dedicated hydrogen-alpha telescope

    Hey Slymin - Great work on your videos. I just got my first telescope, Celestron 8SE. I purchased it with the Eclipsmart filter. Today was a perfect day to test it out. I was curious how you do the star align? if you arent allowed to look at the sun, and can't see the stars, what is the day time process? Are you using starsense to do so? I had to manually align up the sun today, using my meade lpi-gc camera which went usb into my laptop, so i would simply look at the laptop screen while simultaneously using the goto remote and manually moving the scope to get the sun on the screen. i did get it centered, but as the camera went directly into the scope, i have no idea how much of the sun was showing up on my screen. Ultimately, I gave up, in fear I was doing something wrong and wasn't too comfortable pointing my scope at the sun for too long despite the filter being on it properly. I was hoping to just see a perfect circle with the sun spots. It did not seem that simple. Your tips are appreciated!

    • @AstroBlender
      @AstroBlender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Space Facts Wax Here is the procedure: Hand control -> utilities -> sun menu. Allow sun? Yes.
      Then perform a solar system align. With your solar filter attached, center and align the sun. Then you’re tracking.

    • @SpaceFactsWax
      @SpaceFactsWax 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AstroBlender Thank you. I'm being extra cautious though, not using an eye piece to align. Rather, using the camera/laptop. Just curious though, should I have the camera not go directly into the scope? If i had the camera go into a 25mm eye piece, would that provide a wider view than the camera going directly into the scope? should i use an eye piece filter too?

    • @SpaceFactsWax
      @SpaceFactsWax 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well - I'm realizing the second half of that question may be silly if it's not possible to connect a 25mm eye piece and a scope camera like the meade lpi-gc.

    I've read that the 8SE (my scope) isn't very good for solar observation because of its long focal length. I have a slide-on solar filter, and with the correct eyepiece I can see the disc (no detail), but I can't image it with my Celestron Neximage 5MP Solar System Imager. (Cannot focus)

      I have never heard of any solar filter suddenly tearing on its own, and there are thousands of these filters out there. If it happened and someone went blind, the news would travel like wildfire through the astronomy community. I think the only way a tear would happen is if someone accidentally struck the filter - you can avoid this by making sure people stand clear of the scope when others are viewing the sun. If you are still concerned, get a glass filter.

Obviously I'm wrong, I was expecting to see some filtered shots of the Sun, dammit wrong again, all I saw was some guy who appeared to be from the 90s, at least according to the poor quality video. Wouldn't you think someone who could afford such an expensive telescope would have a decent camera. Dammit, wrong again.
