  • On the morning of 9/11, Scott Strauss was on the train home when he heard over his Walkman that a plane struck the World Trade Center. Strauss said. He grabbed some clothes, said goodbye to his wife, and raced back into Manhattan.
    Assigned to a rescue team, Strauss reached the World Trade Center moments after the North Tower collapsed. For the next several hours, he joined in the arduous task of searching for survivors in what would become known as “the pile.”
    Early that evening, Strauss was notified that Port Authority Police Sgt. John McLoughlin and rookie Officer Will Jimeno were found in the debris field. They survived the collapse of the towers but were trapped 30 feet beneath the pile, injured, and unable to escape. It was up to Strauss and his team to rescue them.
    The team began the perilous journey to reach the officers, crawling over hot steel and squeezing through narrow, smoke-filled spaces. It took more than three hours to pull Officer Jimeno to safety. Sgt. McLoughlin was rescued a few hours later.
    If you haven't done so already watch last week's episode where we talked with Will Jimeno about his experience trapped under the rubble.

    I lived in onset Massachusetts and my neighbors had a daughter who was my age. We were both 10 years old. Her father died in the towers on 9/11 and I just remember being so completely sad for my friend and neighbor. They didn't leave their home for weeks. The lights were always off. The neighborhood got together and fed them every single day, every meal. The entire town sent them money and gifts and cards and so much love. I will never forget that day. Never

    Thank you so much for these stories. I was 24 years old at the time, living in CT. Having just come home from an evening on 9/10 leaving NYC at 1am on 9/11 after having seen Michael Jackson at Madison Square Garden. Took the train back home to CT got home at 2am. I remember when they were looking for volunteers to help search. I wanted to go so bad but I was working. Living in the tri-state area we felt the need to help and our hearts went out to all these rescue people . Months following or weeks I would take the train into the city and go to Bryant park or one of small park like areas. That had posters with people pictures posted. People looking for their loved ones. I did home care as a CNA one of patients grandaughter was there and watched people jump. She developed bad ptsd after witnessing that. I loved NYC and would spend hours walking around the city. I remember seeing the movie knowing this story was real but never hearing or seeing the people who this happened to. Thanks so much for this story and putting real faces to the story. Thanks for doing your job and doing it well and having the courage to do it.

I went to the city once in ‘06 with my aunt and cousins but we stayed in Times Square for 10 hours not really doing anything 😑. One day I will go to pay my respects. Sucks the towers are gone, let alone all the loss of life that happened there. I do wish they would’ve made two new towers instead of just the one though

    I really appreciate the survivors/rescuers telling their stories. I was a senior in high school at the time and every year I relive that day through tv and TH-cam. This year especially I’ve come across a few stories or new pieces of info of that day that I never knew. I’m not sure why I relive that day each year since 9/11..but the little bits of info or how things really were for those directly in it helps even us who watched on tv make some sense of that day

    As for the negative comments as to why they would want to do this podcast on such a horriffic day, one thing everyone should learn is this: "Those who dont learn from the past are doomed to repeat it". And that fits for so many circumstances, times, disasters. Thanks and praise from Peterborough Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 ♥️

      Good question, but I've tried and tried to find at least one full fledged interview about John and I couldn't come up with any. I think he just doesn't like talking about it or doesn't want any interviews which, I can understand why, but that's just what I think.

    • @josephmendoza9523
      @josephmendoza9523 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ashtondoublet8334 or maybe it's because he knows that Will will probably talk about it and I think that's good enough for him which makes sense. I'm sure Will has John's permission to talk about their experience surviving the collapse of the twin towers as well as the collapse of WTC 7. . I mean I know that there's people who actually don't mind talking about what happened to them a long time ago even though it's horrific and there's people who really don't want to talk about it because maybe it's a painful memory to them. Like with Will just the way how he describes everything that happened to him on 9/11 you can tell that he still gets choked up talking about what happened. Because no matter how many times he's talked about it or the years that have passed by you can tell that he's never really going to fully recover from it and it's probably the same thing for John McLaughlin.

      John seemed to be a very quiet person. Even Nick cage portrayed him as someone who didn't like to talk in that world trade center movie.
      In fact, I think there's a scene where will is trying to talk and John admits hes not a talker or has never been good at talking and will says "you have to talk to me I have to talk" or something like that because he needed the distraction to help him survive.
