The Houston Rockets were struggling before Yao and T-Mac brought them back into the playoff conversation, as they led the team to multiple 50+ win seasons. In this video, I talk about the entire era in detail and what went wrong in each season. Hope you enjoy!

You're not giving Yao the proper respect for that 7 game series vs the Lakers. He was the reason they pushed that to 7 games and I'm convinced that had he not gotten injured midway through that series that the Rockets could have won that series.

In 2004-05 Playoff series vs Mavs series turned around in favor of Mavs after 0-2 deficit bacause Mavs owner Mark Cuban made a call into League's office complaning that Yao didn't receive enough foul calls, so starting from Game 3 refs put Yao into foul trouble. Rockets coach Jeff van Gundy revealed that much later and talked about it on ESPN that it was illegal for team owner to intervene and influence results.
Other reason for Rockets not to advance into 2nd round in these series was betting scandal with corrupted referee Tim Donaghy who was at charge of decisive games in these series. Later it was revealed and approved by the Court that Donaghy influenced results of these games. He constantly put Yao into foul trouble starting from Game 3 of these series.

    • @LeeGHThomas
      @LeeGHThomas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@nudenotnakedartist1333 the bullshit I always hear is "he never averaged 10 rebounds per game for a season" as if he didn't literally average 9.5 for his career. Saying he was "soft" and "just tall", as if he didnt shoot 85% from the line his whole career, 60+% from outside the paint and averaged 2 blocks per game for his entire career. Talking about playoff appearances and total wins as if those aren't team accolades. As a rockets fan I was there for ALLLLL of the battles versus Duncan and Shaq. He could dominate both in the paint as well as being every bit as versatile of as scorer as Timmy was. His career was plagued with poor supporting casts and injuries once he was truly in form to carry a team himself. Despite being my favorite players growing up, Stevie Franchise, TMac and Rafer Alston are all considered to be pretty mediocre in the light of modern advanced analytics, while Yao is the exact opposite as one of the most efficient 5s ever. And of course by the time better role players came around like Battier and Scola, Yao wasn't even capable of making it to the post season healthy. It's a damn shame how disrespected certain all-time ballers get because they played before the youtube mixtape era. Steve Nash, Abdul-Rauf, AK47, Tony Kukoc, and shit people are already forgetting how good Dirk was and he won a championship in the decade WE ARE STILL IN. I could go on all day but I'll spare you lol.

Its really tough to compare this duo with what ifs. First of all, we had major outsiders winning titles and going finals. Just look at Portland Trailblazers in 2003/2004 season.
These guys out of nowhere contested The Lakers which was A Super team during early-mid 2000s. The Spurs... another great team, Minnesota Timberwolves, The Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings...
An Era full with great talents and amazing potential. Look at Vince and Dirk, still playing still important players. The Era was difficult for all superstars so yeah they were Hall of Famers for sure but no rings. Thats alright though, we know their value.

The 2009 playoff was their best chance to win the championship. If Yao wasn't injured in the middle of the 7-game series against the Lakers, they could've won that conference semi-final. After passing the Lakers, Denver and Orlando were much easier to deal with.
Throughout the entire YT era, the Rockets were lack of a decent PG. Mike James, Bob Sura, Rafer Alston, and Aron Brooks. None of them was playoff starter quality TBH. Kyle Lowry didn't join them until the last year of the era. Moreover, his Rockets years were nowhere near his prime time in Toronto.

Hey Andy you could do a video talking about the whole 70s era of nba basketball because it's the most unknown period of nba basketball and there were a lot off interesting things that happened in that era.

The truth about them is that after Yao came into his own and was ready to dominate the league, he and Tracy were never completely healthy together at the same time. If they had both been healthy together, they win at least one ring if not two, possibly more. During the Dallas series, I would agree that losing Juan Howard to injury was very costly and probably the difference.

It's not the team, it was the coaching system, and the player management that let them down. People don't understand how important that is. You can't just get stars and say go to work. You need a system that makes everyone play at their best

The main problem were the injuries and the western conference itself at that time, as you already said. It was ridiculously hard to be champions in the west, and no team had the playoffs seed secured beforehand, so I would never say they completely fail; they just fail to win a championship. And we'll never know what would happen in 2009 if t-mac and yao weren't injured. Artest alone almost beat the Lakers, so...

  • @AirRusher1992

Two of my favorites player ever. It's a shame that injuries got the best of them which is why this era didn't result to a championship although I'm not sure if they can actually win it all consider the fact the Western Conference was really tough with teams like San Antonio, Dallas and Phoenix were legit title contenders.

As a big Yao fan and a Chinese myself, I have to say this video is sugarcoating Yao too much. Andy does not mention Yao’s defensive limitation against opposite center with 3s. Okur of Utah, Lafrentz of Mavericks and sometimes Troy Murphy of Golden state all have given him serious headaches and weakened Rocket’s defense as a whole, this costed them many games and even series. He did have higher efficiency than Tmac on stats, but his stamina problem in 4th drastically decreases his performance, therefore Tmac was and always supposed to be the offense starter. Back then, even among craziest Chinese Yao fans, this “Tmac taking too much offensive proportion from Yao” theory never stood.

Back when tanking is not choice and just pure competition. Basically, they could have rested both Yao and Tmac for a season and tank to get a high draft prospect, and get back next season. The problem was, tanking was not a choice back then.

As a T-Mac fan, i remember that i really hated watching 2007 playoffs against Utah Jazz. In that series, Matt Harpring who's not even an average player literally had locked T-mac defensively.
If they didn't get injured, they'd have a lot more success? You can't know if you are talking about T-Mac. He was just an unlucky man. Back in time with Magic, i can understand his failure at first round in 2004 against Pistons but Magic couldn't pass the first round even against New Orleans Hornets before then.

    • @FlyingV555

It should have been Yao scoring 26-28 points a game and T-Mac scoring 20-22 a game instead of vice versa. That could have made all the difference. T-Mac was an inefficient volume scorer (not saying that teams can't benefit from such a guy, it really helps to have that consistent scorer who can get his own shot and bail out the offense), Yao was a very efficient scorer who should have scored more.
