After initially looking into Classical, my husband and I are really feeling connected to this approach and your videos are so inspiring to help us start implementing it now, while our daughter is still in public school. I want to thank you for sharing all this information in such a clear, organized and nice way. I think I´m falling in love with Charlotte Masson method. I´m a new homeschool mom, preschool teacher for 16 years and recently pulled my girls out of school. Feeling so lost and confused but excited too. I live in Colombia, wondering how to make this CM method work, I´m worried about finding living books here and in spanish, because my girls English levels are just A2 and A1. If you have any suggestions for me, I´ll really appreciate :)

    Question! As far as Living Books goes, they are so fun to read. My only concern is the possibility that more conjecture can be injected thereby straying from pure truth. Do you find that there is a good portion of Living Books that are written that don't cross the line from 'truth as far we can tell' to 'a story 'inspired' by a time/person/place'?

    • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question! Yes, living books are available in both historical fiction form (which is similar to what you described) and in narrative form, which tells the story of what happened based on the facts but in an interesting, narrative way. For example, A Castle with Many Rooms and Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors are living, narrative history books that present accurate descriptions of events and people without inserting conjectured conversations and such.

    So what happens when they don't remember anything because they weren't paying attention. If you only read it once, and you need them to know the information your reading?

    • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Maryssa. Great question and one that frustrates many Mommas. Children giving their full attention to a lesson is important no matter which style of education a family utilizes and key to Charlotte's method. It's important to first determine any underlying reasons as to why they were mentally checked out and if they were truly not paying attention or simply aren't taking from the reading what we believe they should take. Charlotte discusses how we each take from a reading something different...what we are able to assimilate or need during a reading. It's like when Scripture is read at church, I'm always amazed at the different ways it stands out to various people. Are their distractions around, are they uninterested in a book, is the book living, are they tired from a lack of sleep, are the lessons varied, are they being weak-willed...? After determining what the cause may be, you can begin to work on helping him correct the issue. No, he won't have the information you previously read and that is ok. It's unfortunate that he missed the details. If it is because of a lack of sleep, distractions, etc, those can be corrected. Does he possibly need something in his hand to fidget quietly with? I (SCM team member) knit during Sunday School class. It helps me to focus on the lesson while keeping my hands busy (quietly and tucked near a wall so as to not disturb others). Some children are able to listen better when they are able to sit on an exercise ball or stand and quietly pace. You'll want to make sure your book choice is engaging. If he is simply being weak-willed, you may want to consider working on the habit of attention however it will be important to discuss the situation with your husband and together, determine consequences for the actions. Discuss the consequence with your son prior to school and then allow him to determine if he is going to pay attention or not. If he does not, then it is important to follow through with the consequence. If it may be due to a lack of varying lessons, Sonya discusses the idea further: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/student-mentally-checks/

    I love this I want to do this with my children. I have a question though, how can I fit all of history in with books that extend the story and time it would take to cover a lot more info and people out of a regular text book? Do I just tell myself honestly kids don’t remember every date and little thing a text book will tell them anyways and I should just pick certain things from certain time periods to focus on and bring to life? I hope this makes sense thank you so much!

    • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Frank. First, it is important to remember that education is a life. There is no need nor anyway to fit is ALL in. Our goal as home educators is to create a love of learning in our children and to help them learn how to learn for themselves so that when they leave our homes, they have the skill and ability to continue self-education. That said, traditional textbooks generally provide children with a wide but shallow coverage of events and people. Using Charlotte's method, there is not as wide of coverage however the coverage is more deep. Instead of knowing that the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, children will become better aquainted with the current events of that time as well as deeply involved with a few characters from the time period. By doing this, they better understand the "why" behind the signing. They are now in a "relationship" with that time period/event/person. Within our history lesson plans, we schedule a "spine" for the entire family that covers the particular time period of history (not as thick as a traditional textbook) and add more living books that are age appropriate for grades 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Children will dive deeper into an event, area, or person with the grade-leveled books.

    Do they narrate EVERYTHING we read?! Or is it just a certain amount of reading given to narration? It seems like the flow of the story would be disrupted a lot if we have to stop to narrate. Just wondering, I’m new to Charlotte Mason but am loving the theory so far!

    • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're so glad you are researching Charlotte's method of education. Narration is a foundation to Charlotte's method of education. She utilized it as a method of assessment as well as a way for a child to grab hold of what was read and seal it in his mind. This paves the way for the science of relations. (Read more about that here:
      We recommend all but literature to be narrated. Literature book should simply be enjoyed for the sake of the story and language. For those who are young and or new to narration it may seem tedious to stop every few paragraphs to narrate so we encourage you to keep the readings short. Allow the child to narrate and then you can add a simple wrap-up comment or discussion if desired. You'll be surprised at how quickly you are able to lengthen the passages being read!
      By the way, a great place to get some help with questions about Charlotte Mason is to go to our SCM Facebook group. A wonderful team from SCM actively participates in the group and helps answer questions, plus there are many other CM-ers there who love to help out. My child will be 6 in a few months. Should I start living books and narration then? Do I wait until she is 7? What should I be doing now?

      Charlotte Mason started formal lessons at the age of six. Before six years old, you can (and should) read living books together; just don't require narration until she's six and ready for formal lessons. This page has some suggestions for the early years (pre-K-Kindergarten) before formal lessons begin: simplycharlottemason.com/planning/preschool-guide/

    Can you just be my mom?
