      exactly. They want to expand into different markets, and there's nothing wrong with that. Bris is only stating that they wisely came out w an english song to appeal to the US market, and that BTS' impact on the US market has paved that way and allowed NCT to release this bop without it being such a huge shock, like, 'wtf is this, korean music?' - everyone will already know about the kpop scene and won't be in shock - that's BTS' impact.

  • @jordan090293
    @jordan090293 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1407

    The whole reason NCT was created was to take their music into other countries. They talked about doing English music before the BTS mania started. It's something SM has been doing for years. They really started it with Super Junior and having a Mandarin sub unit and bringing in Henry who they attempted to push solo. However, that didn't work out to well because SM wouldn't let Henry do Henry. But SM has been releasing music in English for years. The next push into other countries was with Exo where they had Exo-K and Exo-M. They were trying to push more into the Chinese market. At the same time Girl's Generation was gaining a following in the US which lead to them releasing English songs. Then EXO's popularity rose worldwide and they realized with the right guys they could go global. That's why they have such a diverse group. You have Mark and Johnny both from North America. You have Yuta from Japan. You have Ten from Thailand. Then you've got Lucas, Winwin, Renjun, Chenle and Kun from China. The plan is to continue to add members to make the group more diverse. There have been apparently been talks of NCT having a group for major music market which would include America. This was something SM has been planning for years. They had Bo.a release a complete English album which the main single actually charted in the US and was used in movies. So, honestly, BTS isn't breaking down doors, they're walking through ones that were already quietly opened.

      .... hee... Did I miss something? What music? SM focus is to expand, simple, they dont have a personal signature, aporting what? foreing producers, diferent lenguajes, diferent nationalities, is not original is aiming for success, nothing wrong with that tbh.
      If SM was more organic in the proces for what they are traying to archive... I will be rocking sooooo hard with them, but nop, the food is dry

    • @jordan090293
      @jordan090293 5 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      @@rm-nn3869 how is it not organic? None of kpop is organic to be up front. It's all manufactured. You put through a training system that's run like a machine. The way SM does it is no different from any other entertainment company. NCT isn't being pushed on anyone though. Their following has grown in the US like crazy over the past year. They've done multiple events in the US and they planned on doing an English song from the beginning. The boys hinted at it already. Plus Ten already came out with an English song.

    BTS did give the longest lasting impression on the US but NCT isn't trying to copy that. The entire concept of NCT from the beginning was taking over different music charts all over the world. That's how the concept was proposed and presented as. I actually think EXO was a failed experiment with the subunit concept (not saying they themselves are a failure, I love them and they are extremely successful, but the concept didn't work out).
    K-pop groups always release different versions of their songs (ex. Japanese versions, Thai version of BDS, Chinese versions, etc.). I feel like a lot of people are being really pissy about the English version, more so than the others. Idk why. Does music have to not be in a language you don't understand to be enjoyable? Is that why people don't care about the Japanese or Thai versions?

    we have to admit that bts made a very big impression on american market, but say that they paved the way for another group is wrong.
    SNSD, 2NE1, Big Bang, the legend PSY, and many more made people curious about the kpop and then BTS came and the fan base made a very great job promoting them so they becoming like this.
    you better watch NCT introduction video where Lee Soo Man explained about NCT and their vision with the group, you will understand that with or without BTS's success on America, they will still promote there.

  • @arasseo92
    @arasseo92 5 ปีที่แล้ว +219

    I’d like to drop my thoughts into this since we in a discussion. Head’s up: Long read. Just my opinion.
    I agree that BTS broke down the door and left an impression in the US. They're not going anywhere for sure. Why go when you’re doing well, right? BUT. It didn’t mean they “paved the way”. It’s 2 different things. Paving the way means making room for what’s to come, to make sure the future’s accepted, impact not really required. Breaking the door means arriving with impact. Senior artists like Psy, Big Bang, SuJu, EXO, etc paved the way for years, performing even if no one knew them. And yes, BTS broke the door…for THIS generation of Kpop. Just this one. Who originally did years ago when none minded or knew about Kpop? BoA, who singlehandedly showed up at MTV awards at a young age and made people interested. Let’s be clear on that.
    If BoA and other senior groups “paved the way” why didn’t they make an impact like BTS? They did but it’s about society, trend, and general/personal interest. Let’s be honest here, 80% of Kpop fans now weren’t there during the boom of Kpop in Asia and bits of Europe and US. Hell, I bet only few knew about Monster X and GOT7 taking Europe by storm. It’s been there for decades but no one noticed because society thought it’s simply not mainstream. Back then, people liked disco, metal, rnb, etc. but nowadays, people don’t make those music as much anymore because simply, it’s not the trend. So BTS came at the right time, being digitally active and their songs being on trend. This made people interested. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not comparing BoA, Psy, and BTS. They’re completely different leagues. I’m just saying they sparked curiosity like the rest. The big “who are you”. But, it didn’t mean BTS paved the way just because other groups are trying to promote in the US now. Many have before. Y’all just didn’t see that because you weren’t interested. Yet.
    Maybe for most of fans now, BTS “paved the way” for Kpop FOR YOU. Because they helped you learn about Kpop but that doesn’t give y’all rights to think they’re superior above all else. Again, for YOU not everyone else. They’re in one industry amongst many other artists doing the same agenda, make Kpop known. (unless y’all still stick to that “btspop” shit then I have no words for you)
    Now for Bris, I wish this video was more NCT related (like about their song, the concept, the effects, their choreo, aesthetic, etc) because it is an NCT127 reaction video but I get the build up. I wish you highlighted NCT’s impact rising first then connected BTS. It’s all in choice of flow…like rapping. NCT is charging to the top to follow EXO’s impact and SM’s legacy not just in a smart way but in a strategic way made years ago before they debuted. Their concept wasn’t original. From what I heard, it was supposed to be SuJu’s concept of having unlimited members, promoting globally, etc. This has been a goal of SM years ago but it failed. They kept trying. They almost did it with EXO but they became something different entirely. NCT was their key with a solid concept of unlimited members from all over the world, promoting globally, using their diversity to reach many audiences. Releasing an English song shouldn’t be surprising if you guys knew the true concept of the group. They’ve been collaborating with western artists for months, years already. Of course most don’t know that since you weren’t interested in the first place. Some just stumbled over the video.
    Bottom line is, no one can say someone “paved the way” when they’re the trend now. History will determine that; years of activity will support that. This is undermining the efforts of the senior groups, especially SOLOISTS, that helped promote Kpop around the world before your faves debuted or became known. You can’t say baseless things when your interest and awareness just sparked recently. Learn how things got there. It’s not about rivalry because some will go on top and some won’t. Just listen and enjoy music, your faves. Why do y’all always have to connect one to another single time just because it’s “like” this and that? They could have the same genre, same influences but in the end, they’re all different.

      She even said that she picked up the language the hard way and because they didn’t have translators before...
      She even said how they didn’t have private vehicles and she had to take the train because taxis are too expensive....
      it made me sad too because you can clearly see that she had to do everything by herself and learn everything by herself while promoting in a foreign country... She even said ppl thought she was a local so that was harder...
      so for me I think she’s really one of the idols who Paved the way...
      cuz I remember them joking about how she built one of SM’s building and how Growl built like another SM’s(?) building...

Which is why we have those subunits. They want to promote in Korea, China, Japan, Amercia and they will be after Latin based countries, trust me, NCT WILL also release Spanish songs in the future. LOOK OUT FOR THAT. Since BTS opened the door unexpectedly, SM naturally was quick to put business there. After all, you CAN'T open the door if someone else did it for you (NCT debuted in 2016, mind you) so they took the oppountiy that presented itself in front of them. Gotta make it while it's still trendy. It's definitely a smart move and since they have 3 fluent English speakers, the opporunity is A LOT EASIER.

Big Bang sold out Prudential and the Staples center. The reason BTS is such a big deal is because of how much social media has grown and their social media presence. I understand your point of view, but there's so much you still don't know about NCT and SM. Regardless of whether BTS blew up in America or not, SM would have still released an english version. SM planned everything out already. Many of NCT's song have been worked on for YEARS. For example, NCT has been practicing black on black for like 2 years before it got released. And in this regular-irregular album, we have received many previews of multiple tracks in the past already. SM don't care about what other groups are doing. They're just going at their pace. If they really did care, they wouldn't have kept promoting NCT when other big groups are promoting so they could win some music shows. Also NCT was designed to go global. Before BTS even got famous in America, SM revealed their plans of globalization. Even NCT's music was designed to cater to western tastes which we saw with 7th sense and onwards.

    No offense but there is no need to have a "theory" for why they have English version. They have already stated why they did. NCT are meant to be globally diverese they've been putting out Chinese and Japanese songs for a long time and they are starting to root out to english as well because they have English speaking members. NCT had this Global concept since 2016.
    Also BTS weren't the first groups to go big in America there was Girls Generation, Psy (which you mentioned), Wonder Girls and Bigbang. They were huge and built up the popularity little by little which helped BTS go out on an even larger scale. My theory is from all the impact of previous artists, NCT will be bigger than ever.

      NOt to take away from other groups achievements because they always worked hard too. And NCT deserves all that comes their way.

    Hi bris, I know people free to give their opinion but just to let you know kpop 1st and 2nd generation already did that way before like suju as kwave that have their sorry sorry dance around the world, bigbang had their american tour succesfully, girl's generation even has been released their song The Boys in english ver when they got contract with us music production company and had their stage performance in madison square, GD had stage collaborated in US with Missy Elliot and had collaboration with skrillex in his music video, Psy of course we know already did the great job to open the gate, exo with their success concert in North America and their album achievement in US chart, and many thing that was happen before bts open the curtain to the world. I think all of them trying really hard to make people around the world impessed with kpop. And with millenial generation now, kpop spreading faster especially for bts music. For NCT of course they did a good job and to be the next kwave project to spread kpop around the world, I know they did a great job last year with their cherry bomb perform in apple music as the first kpop invited. So, better we enjoy all the kpop music without theory and speculation since we don't really know who is the first. All of them working hard for this not only bts but all of them...

      In my personal opinion, I think that bts made it so that Kpop was more normalized in America, but a lot of 2nd gen groups like the ones you mentioned were the ones who made it possible.

    I don't even stan NCT, but you just sound insecure -- don't get triggered!
    The fact that you made such a superficial observation proves it. I understand, though. It's not about popularity. I don't want NCT making a song with Nicki Minaj or Big Bang feat. JB or whatever. It's awkward with a side of desperate. 2NE1, EXO, Girls Generation, and Big Bang have been really popular for a long time, and snsd and exo were the first Kpop acts to start breaching and beating American artist on polls - it was funny. Kpop was coming to America, it was inevitable -- like, blackPink?
    I hope everyone understands that it's all about Sponsors when it comes to ALL American music and popularity. It's because Bighit and LG is very lenient and proactive about getting these sponsors, while other kpop groups tend to keep it Korean. Kpop sells Bigger than most American artist these days, and it's been like this a while. Recently, Rihanna's Cosmetics Brand Fenty tried to get EXO's Kai to be a Sponsor, but I think the company turned it down.... But then again, I hate Rihanna and would prefer Kai just do Korean things.
    SM has been releasing English versions to songs for a long time (we've seen this with Girls Generation The Boys back in 2011 - though kinda cheapy/or crap). Even Super Junior has been partually in Spanish lately.
    As an Army from their debut, I watched how all the kpop news buzz simultaneously switched to bias towards BTS and I was overjoyed to see the boys doing so well. But BTS is not a fairytale and they didn't kick the door down, they went behind the scene and talked to the right people to get the door opened up for them - do some research on LG for that. BTS was transformed into the "Kpop group of America" as a money making strategy. Even Koreans talk about how the groups lyrics are weird, designed in a way that is easy to sing -- that's kind of anti Korean.
    I don't understand why you'd try and pull that on NCT for making an English song for having english speaking fans... This fame that Army has, I am not sure I want any part of it anymore... Especially after I found out RM was inspired by the book dominion known for it's devil worshiping references. Sounds ridiculous but the bs people actually do. Hope you guys understand exactly what American popularity is, realize all things are done on purpose, when money is on the line, no matter what it is.

    1. “BTS busted down the door” “they created the vibe” I love BTS with my whole heart and soul they are the first group I’ve ever listened to when it comes to Kpop and I consider myself an army but pls STOP I beg STOPPPPPP comparing NCT and other groups to BTS !!! it can come off very disrespectful. BTS has nothing to do with NCT dropping an English track. NCT have made it clear from the beginning before BTS got big and before the sub unit debuted that they were trying to focus on the global audience especially since NCT 127 and NCT as a whole are from many different countries. Also if you think about it, BTS did not pave the way or bust doors open for anyone since there were many groups before that had the same effect, you just weren’t in the kpop scene at that time. EXO, BIGBANG, H.O.T AND many more I can’t name have all had such a big impact globally it wasn’t just BTS. anyways I’m getting off track. I’m just tryna say I don’t get what NCT releasing an English track has to do with BTS or any other groups. It’s honestly amazing how army’s can’t react to another group without comparing.

    • @jojo-hb7ck
      @jojo-hb7ck 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is true and all. But has these groups sold out citi field? have they achieved literally the level of influence and success that BTS coming from a SMALL company has? Have they made EVERY single talk show want them? It's hard to face the truth but BTS did in fact pave the way for KPOP. They were not the first artists no, but they are the MOST known kpop artist apart from PSY. I love NCT 127, but they are definitely trying to be more westernized with the song, it's a good song but it's nothing new. We hear these type of musics all the time, even the music videos aren't different. There is not much originality there. I just think people should be allowed to give credit where credit is due. NCT 127 would not be going to the AMA's or on Jimmy Kimmel if it wasn't for BTS sorry. If EXO, BIGBANG, H.O.T and those others you named had paved the way, why weren't more kpop groups requested all over the world? on talk shows? It's not comparing the groups but just looking at facts and statistics.

    • @jojo-hb7ck
      @jojo-hb7ck 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Were these kpop groups you speak of getting a letter from the Korean government? Were they getting presented with a Cultural Merit? I don't believe so. Yes they've had a global impact but to what extent? I just don't understand how hard it is for people to admit that BTS busted their ass and weren't even COLLECTIVELY trying to pursue the western industry, and still aren't to this day however, SM does do the most with their artists, and it even shines through with NCT 127's twitter. Your faves would not be recognized as much if BTS did not indeed PAVED THE WAY with their meaningful message throughout their songs, which........well I'm not going to finish that sentence. Plus 95% of new fans come from hearing about BTS. But keep being indenial about BTS's influence and impact. Not to say that BTS is better than the other kpop artists but they deserve to be recognized for their hardwork from 2010 till now.

    I respect your opinion, but Big Bang and 2NE1, Shinee and Exo really busted open the doors for acceptance in the US and BTS. Granted BTS did a lot of work in Cali but the bands I mentioned previously proved that Kpop is marketable and can sell concert tickets, streaming, and units in the US. Exo charted on US charts before BTS with no English tracks. I think it's great how people respond to BTS but they were not the ones to pave this way, but they have benefited because of the early pioneers I mentioned in the beginning of this post. I came into Kpop during the 2nd Generation wave like many other American fans. A lot of newer fans came in with BTS so they aren't aware of the ground breaking work that was done before. I don't feel that newer fans should be shunned or made to feel bad. Do research for yourself so that when you speak you come from a place of knowledge and not just uninformed opinion.

    This is actually the first Brisxlife video that I’ve watched in a long time... so I’m disappointed but not surprised that a lot of things haven’t changed. I came back because I wanted to give your content another chance, so please don’t think that I’m just trying to hate. I’m seriously trying to help with some constructive criticism. This is obviously your video, Brisx, so keep doing what you want... but I sincerely think you’re doing yourself and your channel a huge disservice with how you approach certain videos/reactions/topics. I’m warning you, this is an essay. Sorry, but I had to go in, guys.
    Before the reaction even started, several things happened: You claim that you love NCT 127, yet you don’t mention a single reason why you would... even though there’s no shortage of reasons and that‘s generally the natural thing to do.
    Then, you mention that the “interesting” thing about this song is that it’s in English. Failing to mention literally any other “interesting things” about this song or this group makes it seem like the English is the only reason why you’re excited for this. Yes, it’s very exciting that they’re trying something new but how is there nothing else worth mentioning about a new song from a group that you apparently love? And since they’ve never made an English song before, it obviously can’t be one of the reasons why you’ve already grown to love them.
    Then you make it clear that you have some theory about how and why NCT 127 is entering the western market which leads the viewer on the false pretense that perhaps there’s more to your love for NCT 127 than initially meets the eye, but more on this later.
    Now onto the actual reaction. Even though at one point you say that this song is good enough to break into your top ten... you barely say anything about the song itself and what makes it so good. All you pretty much say is that it is “swaggy” and a “banger”, very grand but seemingly empty surface-level comments.
    Now that the reaction has ended, you’re probably going to share that theory that you were so excited about earlier. Perhaps this theory about NCT 127’s entrance into the western market will reveal to us more about your personal connection with NCT 127 as a group and as musicians.
    Womp. Instead, with absolutely no further comment on the song itself, you proceed to spend half of an NCT 127 reaction video talking about BTS. Please tell me why your first instinct, and only preparation for this “theory” about NCT... was a twitter discussion about BTS? It would be like going to a bike store before going to a car dealership to buy a car... it literally makes no sense. That aside, you discussed this “NCT 127” theory at length (clearly) without even considering “NCT 127” at all. I’m not saying everyone should know everything about NCT’S concept but it’s really not that hard to look up. I swear I don’t have anything against BTS, and I’m sure their success in America isn’t entirely irrelevant, but there’s almost entirely so much more to NCT’s strategy for an American career beyond BTS’s example. Furthermore, if you knew you were going to include the “discussion” beforehand... you could’ve conducted a very basic google search before filming that would’ve showed you everything you needed to know about Lee Sooman’s désire for their global expansion.
    As I mentioned earlier, you made it very clear that you always intended on bringing up some “theory” about NCT 127 entering the Western market... So when the MV ended, and you only said one sentence about the song/MV before jumping straight into the theory that turned out to just be BTS talk... it screams that you started filming this NCT 127 reaction video with BTS as your primary focus. Idk if you filmed this video knowing that NCT 127 was going to take a back seat to BTS in their own reaction video or you let it happen anyways by not noticing or fixing that in editing. Either way, it’s very disappointing low quality “business mode” prioritizing here.
    Lastly, you even chose a “sub”title (try not to get TRIGGERED) that is only relevant to the half of the video that, once again pretty much has nothing to do with the NCT 127 song listed in the title. The “try not to get TRIGGERED” part even comes before the “Reaction” in the title, for goodness sakes.
    Long story longer, your enthusiasm and charisma come across as pretty insincere and a lot of your content seems like crowd-pleasing smoke and mirrors. I know/hope you’re not doing this on purpose but these are just a few examples of how I think you accidentally sabotage yourself sometimes. Not only are you being quite careless with how you indirectly belittle/undervalue some Kpop artists sometimes ... but (I hope this helps you see how) you’re foregoing pretty obvious thought processes that could help you easily avoid all of this.

    I love that BTS was able to let people all over the world see that kpop is a thing, but it is starting to annoy me when I hear people saying that NCT (or other kpop groups I'm just using them as an example) are trying to steal BTS fame or copying them. BTS did this so that kpop could be more recognised, so please stop bashing other groups because they want people to hear their music as well. He didn't mention this in the video, but his words just got me thinking and I just wanted to put my opinion out there.

      BTS had a journey with the fandom, from nobodies to legends (blocking them, opresing, you name it, the receipts are easy to find) you have a telented group with a fandom doing half of the company job, they are the ones filling the stadiums breaking records buying staff.
      A company can have conections, push a group out there having a entourage planing things for years and have fair succes for it dosent mean is going to be a phenomenon. There are going to be good waves, but the tsunami is called BTS.

NCT just had an amazing comeback and people should appreciate the quality of this comeback, not try and put them down because they are “copying” BTS... please don’t compare groups to other groups that’s how fan wars happen... BTS was not the first to make a song in English, sure they have been successful in the West... but many groups have had a lot of success in the West as well (example Got7 just had a huge world tour that sold out)... next time don’t compare groups and enjoy they songs that these artists put in the work for.. thank you

      I'm an ARMY and even I don't understand how some people can say that this is a copycat situation. BTS literally does not have any original music in English. They have done cover songs in English, but as far as their own music, no. There is no way that NCT can be copying on that basis alone. I think it is strategic and smart for SM to ride the high of this wave of interest in kpop stateside. They would be absolutely foolish not to market their global, multinational group created for international expansion, to the largest global music market. What BTS has done is bring kpop a second time around to a large amount of people who did not fall into the hallyu wave when groups like BigBang and SNSD helped spread it. Kpop at that time only stayed within the kpop community for many years. Whether people are actively listening to BTS like true kpop fans or not, they are at least familiarizing people with the terms "kpop" and "BTS". It's hard to escape them even when you aren't actively searching for them. Their achievements give way for other groups to be successful as well and I am in full support of that!!!

    Because no matter how much better other groups do in the US from now on, all the praise and appreciation is gonna go to BTS! That's one! And 2nd, this isn't the 1st time a group released an all English track however, it IS the very 1st English title track for any Korean group and No, I don't think it has anything to do with "BTS's busting down the US market door" and let's cash on this chance...SM knows that their audience has grown and luckily NCT has the quality and ability to pull new and innovative ideas! That's it! NCT worked hard for it and they shouldn't be robbed of their well deserved praise. Now, if we start to talk about who busted which door and whatnot, that's gonna start a whole different discussion (war)! So, let's just sit back and enjoy the song!

Saying they were westernized, now nct came out with a full English song and it's a great song but it's no different from other songs in the west. Even the message is the same. BTS definitely HELPED to make Kpop more mainstream and accessible to the West but I also think it's unfair to pin/attribute other groups' success and hard work on BTS. They're different groups with different styles and concepts so regardless of who you consider to be 'the first ones' to crack the States, they're all worthy of praise in their own way. Plus, many groups have been doing interviews and concerts worldwide before the rise of BTS. Love to BTS, NCT and all Kpop groups working their butts off! This song is 100% a bop and defo one of my faves this year! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of their growth.

    Don't react to nct if you're just going to discredit all their hard work. BTS has nothing to do with their success overseas. NCT's original concept was for them to be global. That's always been the plan. They have members from all across the world. They have songs in korean, chinese, and japanese. It would only make sense for them to release a full english song as well. Especially considering that they have 4 members who speak english fluently. AND two current members who are from north america. NCT has always been popular in the states and it ain't got a god damn thing to do with BTS and that's just a fact.

      I agree with you 100%.. i feel armys don’t realize that other groups have made songs in English as well and just assume it was just bts

      @@Rbrinkley BTS have never made a full English song. But like I dont understand why ppl keep denying BTS impact in helping kpop into the western market. Other groups still working hella hard but like the influence is still there.

      Half the population in america that likes kpop wouldn't have known about it without bts

      @@softhaechan4752 Thank you. I'm multi-fandom as fuck but I never would have even learnt about NCT, SVT, Red velvet, MX if i hadn't gotten into BTS. And I got into BTS like almost 4 years ago so imagine new ARMYs

    What I will give to BTS is that they have opened doors for MEDIA in America such as making it a bigger thing for Kpop groups to be invited for interviews or award shows like the AMAs, but not Kpop groups having fans in America or being able to release English versions of songs or having concerts or tours in America because that has been happening.

      Grace Kelly exactly like honestly it's a media aspect with them it wasn't music .with the second generation and first plus NCT were recognize for album's so it's make no sense to say BTS paved something or is better l

      This is what I can agree with. And I get disappointed in armys that fail to see that sometimes the media just put bts in weird situations because they know the amount of traffic it'll bring

      Kpop groups were winning MTV and Billboard awards and getting invited to shows long before BTS. I mean wasn’t it Wonder Girls who even got their own show at Nickelodeon?
      The big difference is social media, which BigHit was faster than other Kpop groups to take advantage of and that favored BTS’s international popularity.
