This is the planting that actually got me to move from just watching you do bonsai to actually keeping trees of my own. 2016 i started watching you 2018 i got my first port from homdepot. Now i have 50ish trees in early stages of training. Probably lost more then i have. First couple years were forsure a struggle lol. Now i feel pretty comfortable.
The first year is definitely a struggle learning how not to kill a portucaria a..
@@dkstott29 I killed alot of tree. I still do. I have to figure out a better winter setup. I lost 20 ports last two weeks of storage and a Jacaranda. But slowly I am figuring it out.
@chasingthefish9042 I'm in the northeast US...my ports and jades go in the basement under LED lighting for the winter. My ports lose a lot of leaves in the fall transition, but they grow back quickly. I've got 6 ports and over a dozen jades...
@@dkstott29 I am not sure even what happened, really. I live in 8b, so they stay out until it hits like 35 degrees. They did great up until the last two weeks. They didn't get overwatered. They kept leaves for the entire time till that point, then they lost branches. Them some just died. I saved a few by just putting them outside

Hey nigel i belive theres a type of portulcaria afra called cork bark and they dont get those lines as they get older

Do you water at all for these tree's over the winter? I really struggle with my portulacaria when I bring them indoors for winter. I don't know if I'm overwatering or if they're drying out. I figured they still need some water being a tropical. But mine just barely survive the winter, and if I can get them outside fast enough (weather permitting) I can bring them back to thriving

Great video! What soap do you use to spray the plants and what's the ratio of soap to water?
I use dish soap, the kind for handwashing dishes. 40 parts water to one part soap!

Hi Nigel! Will soap and water help with springtails?
springtails do not harm any plant. they feed on decaying plant matter exclusivly - this is why they are used in the terrarium hobby as clean up crew...
when they show up in a pot, it is more an indicator that something is wrong rather than the actual reason. substrate that is very water retentive and/or has bad drainage will benefit the springtails of course but those conditions can lead to root rot which - again - would explain the appearance of springtails in the first place

Have you ever tried to get like 3to4 reasonable size plants and shave one side of all then trying to clump/tie them together so they join together like some of your photos. I’m going to try it anyway as i have one that is huge like 35cm diameter trunk so cutting and experimenting isn’t an issue. 👍🇦🇺🦘
