I'm pretty sure East Midlands meet on the 3rd Sunday of each month so 16th Feb is probably the next one? They are an active OS displaying at many of the shows. I'm sure once you see what others bring in to show, you will end up taking part and some of your beauties will be on display at major shows like Gardens' World Live at the NEC Birmingham in June. Who knows, you might even be there?
Thanks Mick, quick question …… when you use your Hotbox do you turn the INTERNAL fans off ? Not sure whether it helps spread the sulphur around or whether it’s best to let the Hotbox ‘do its own thing’ without air movement ? Thanks
@@michaeln3125 Michael I switch the fans off and just let the hotbox produce air borne vapours a bit of a rotten egg smell in the morning but does what it says on the tin from now on I’m going to use it every 3 months.
Hi Mick, A few questions for you. First how often do you repot your orchids? Next, at the beginning of your video you have a section of orchids that are in baskets and hanging under lights. What type of lights are you using there? As always Mick, thanks again for the videos and you could barely hear the wind.
The lights are the ones I used over my greenhouse pond to give additional lighting to the aquatic plants I got them off eBay but currently using them for my Dracula’s for a couple of hours a day during this bleak weather here in the UK, repotting is usually every two years however on occasions I tend to look at the media and if I think it’s causing an issue I repot especially if in my opinion it’s probably been overwatered and the bark is breaking down in the pot or even if it’s outgrowing it’s current pot and may restrict root growth because some can double or treble in size during a season, as for the wind sound the mic must be a good one believe me this old greenhouse was rocking lol.
Great vid Mick! I do not have much success growing massies in my highland grow tent. Looking at your vid makes me think I keep them too wet. Will try water less. What about humidity in winter. I cannot go lower than 85% because of the heliamphoras. Would that be an issue?
I water during the winter months about twice a week a very small amount just to keep the media moist, my hydro fogger is switched off as soon as the weather changes the greenhouse only has relative humidity looking today it’s around 90% and to be fair there’s not a lot I can do about it. During summer I aim for humidity at about 70% and everything seems to work well.
hi Mick. my masdies seem to all turn yellow and drop some leaves after a bloom. I dont think Im over watering either since i let them get close to dry before doing so again. I notice you also have that in this video.. is it just age?
Eventually all old leaves will turn yellow and fall off with age however over or under watering can cause the same problem to massies, when you say let them get close to drying out may cause you problems because massies need to be moist all all times even during winter a small amount of water is needed, for me the problem was both overwatering and unwatered because I was away most of the time last season and depended on people watering for me who try to do what they think is best.
@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids thank you for the wisdom. I have moved my masdies over to a more moss based mix. Im traveling soon and am nervous about how my friends may water my orchids... haha oh well
Hi Mick. As a newbie to masdevallias, are we ok repotting at this time of year? I know most orchids they recommend to wait till spring, post flowering, new root growth or many other points in the calendar!
Jane I tend to repot when they need doing and also if they are in spike and I’ve had no problems because as you probably know massie’s grow all year round and will quickly respond to new growing media.
Good job nice bit of Masdevallia maintenance and general maintenance 👍
Thanks 👍
Hi Mick great video looking forward to seeing the nepenthes house soon thanks for sharing
Angela once I’ve sorted these massie’s out I’ll show the nepenthes grow space.
Enjoyed your video Mick! Have a great day!!
