Glen Sherley that was in prison wrote this song. I know his Son. Johnny tried to help Glen. Even gave him a job. But Glen couldn't get adjusted to life. He ended up going back. When Johnny heard about it. Broke his heart. And spoke about it at next concert. But Glen wrote a beautiful song. RIP Johnny and Glen.
Much respect and love, powerful song from the heart, I too know how it feels to loose a loved one to suicide so heartbreaking, RIP Glen Shirley, MY Johnny, and brother, they will be singing together in Heaven, Bless them all😪💔🖤🎶🎸🌹🙏
It’s one of my favorite songs. I can only imagine the other songs he wrote.. the way cashes band plays the song sounds like “will the circle be unbroken” I find that ironic in a way. Shirley became somewhat famous after prison, but got into trouble and ended up taking his life. Cash felt so bad about it and paid for his funeral
Some piece of garbage snuck in here last night and started chopping onions. Damn bastard. Johnny, we miss you old son. You could sing names out of a damn phone book and it would sound good.
My 15 yr old son said his goal is to learn how to play this on the guitar and sing this song. He’s taking voice lessons this summer. Cash is his music idol. We were able to go to Nashville over spring break and went to his museum and eat at Cash Bar and BBQ.
I feel like he (the prisoner) added that line to say that to basically say that you shouldn’t loose hope of making into heaven because as long as you ask God forgiveness He will gladly let you into His Kingdom. That’s what I think it means anyway
This song is timeless!! Thank God for Glenn Sherley!!!!!! Graystone Chapel is one of my All time favorites!l When Iam feeling low this song makes smile!!!💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟
This song is perfect, even for those who are not very religious because the message is so powerful. It never fails to bring tears to my eyes, and I thank you for posting it.
Nothing against you are anyone who may not be religious but I beleive that is the essense of this song because without the Lord we can't have that freedom. I pray you come to the knowledge, God bless you!!😊
That riff is attributed to the legendary Carl Perkins, who played lead guitar in Johnny's band for a few years, not to be confused with Luther Perkins, Johnny's guitar player who pioneered the iconic "boom-chicka-boom" signature sound of Cash.
I had some bad health problems at 40....physical and mental. I hadn't played any music for more than 20 years. I started a choir and wrote some songs that the Pastor liked. I had had an earlier summer job in a youth prison....maximum security for teens who had been convicted of murder, rape, armed robbery, etc. They had a guy from a non-Christian religion who was coming in to teach them racist stuff. I started a ministry, and we visited their regularly. One time, around Christmas, I got to lead the kids in a call and response song I wrote called "Clap and Sing". It was the story of Palm Sunday. The kids picked it right up, and they clapped and sang beautifully. It was amazing! Here I was leading all these kids in this song, and the place was ROCKING! I told them...."all over this part of NY State, everybody's looking for where the action is...where the place is that things are happening.....and they'll never guess, IT'S RIGHT HERE in __________Prison!" They all cheered, it was great. I've been singing and playing ever since, in the Church and out. But that gig was as good as it gets!
The thing is hes at the first row? Glen i mean. So the song is written by an inmate sitting on the first row I know this for 100% Anyone else know this our i need to start looking and reading among all storys. My relative knew cash. Hes dead But have 100eds of pages with stories he told about johnny Alot of photis aswell. It was they day before, thanks to a reporter had a tape Recorder he cash can hear the song. Also when the journalist had a tape Recorder some where at hes body the Record label say -you cant bring that Cash said - yea he can, hes a friend. So reporter has hes own tape Recorder at the show recording it
I have a copy of the 1968 LP - Belonged to my dad - I have a number of 1960s Johnny Cask LP'S - There is something about a record - over a cd - I must admit to having a considerable number of CD'S - Love this song - Not remotely religious.
+Wise General MMA The great thing about a work of art is that different people can enjoy it for different reasons. That this song was written in the context of religious freedoms in a place of confinement makes it especially applicable to people to people who exercise that freedom to be athiest. Have an excellent day.
Bleeding heart Johnny Cash. Did you all know that Cash plagiarized " "Folsom Prison Blues" and settled out of court? And I am a lifetime fan his mysic.
Eli: "It's faith, it's faith. You know, the flower of light in a field of darkness that's giving me the strength to carry on." Solara: "Is that from your book?" Eli: "Shut up, Meg."
Johnny thought he could reform Glen. But sadly, Glen was institutionalized and couldn't cut it on the outside. Johnny had given him a chance..and had him touring with him as a solo artist. Glen did okay for awhile..but then..he began talking crazy..about killing everyone in the band..including Johnny..so, Johnny had to let Glen go. Glen sank into a deep depression. He began using alcohol & drugs, and became practically homeless. Glen finally ended up committing suicide. Sad end to a talented singer/songwriter..who could have had it all..and did for awhile. But, his time at Folsom overtook Glen..and he was not able to successfully leave his past behind. RIP Glen Sherley
@@budderkupp1282 I think a big problem was how Cash went about it, in all honesty. He thought the world of Glen, really believing in him. According to those close to him, Glen was not so confident in himself. Transitioning to society is tough thing. Being thrown back into the limelight with huge expectation on your back is not likely to work for long.
@@DembaraLemoon I agree. Johnny had high hopes for Glen and thought that success would change Glen's life. But Glen couldn't handle the pressures of society. Sad story.

YOU ARE A WONDERFUL FATHER
Jonny Cash’s easy, honest, heartfelt approach is so much more appealing than that of most modern American Christians.
Proof that God gave us a voice and if used correctly can do miracles. I hope he’s playing and singing in the afterlife.

True, it's more than just a religious song. It's a song about a piece of freedom and hope in a place of misery and hopelesness.
Exactly. I'm sure we all have something that makes us feel a similar way.

Glen Sherley didn’t kill anyone. His criminal career was petty theft.
