Your obvious and candid pleasure in listening to this is so communicative! When I tried learning sax for the second time while in my twenties I was scouting the internet and eMule to discover as many old recordings as I could find. I have an old 78rpm of Earl Bostic with Embraceable You & Night & Day which was popular during the era of instrumentals many years ago (1950s)
. Earl Bostic had an individual sound with that raspy, growly tone which was unique & instantly recognisable. Thanks for explaining his use of a Tenor Reed on the Alto Jamie. I had no idea of this. As a result I have tried this out & it works for me. My Alto sounds just great now with a broader tone & volumn. I am no Earl Bostic, but thanks again for some very useful information & your super videos. Stormin Norman.

Bostic had lots of hits throughout the 40s and 50s, so well known.

Awesome.... you really think he's using a tenor reed? I'm embarrassed that I wasn't hip to this tune. You're giving it Hell to, Jamie.

All I can say is that he must have spent every minute of the hour playing to become so fluid and to find those harmonic notes so easily.

    Coltrane loved Earl Bostic

What's really amazing is he was crushing altissimo on horns without modern ergonomics. They might have had better bore designs though, so there is that.
I know a lot of the classical guys were not... enthusiastic... with jazz, and often disrespectful. But you can bet Bostic had a copy of Top Tones with him.

Ha! That was well before top tones I reckon.

@@GetYourSaxTogether looks like the first copyright for Top Tones is 1941. I can't find the release date for Up There. I figured it was later since Sigurd Rascher doesn't have too much of a comb over in his book yet.

First he said he was going to play an alto with a tenor reed, then it got crazier....
    Altissimo mezzo allegro!

Any saxophonist or student should know about all the greats, including Bostic. If not, you’re not doing enough.

You know he's a good player when a professional sounds like a tea kettle trying to reproduce the sound. And that's not a dig at you but Bostic is absolutely insane.

Earl Bostic seems to be for sax players what Art Tatum was for pianists.

Now that's something Coltrane should have paid better attention to. Frantic, but minimal dissonance. Thank you for putting the message out there, ...my faith in this has been somewhat restored.
While Giant Steps just depresses me.
How is this not more revolutionary than that track?!
