    I used to work with a guy who's wife kicked him out. He bounced around friends spare rooms and sofas for a couple of months before he was starting to run out of places to crash. He was fully expecting his wife to phone, tell him all was forgiven, and that he should come back home, so he didn't want to rent a flat somewhere and get tied into a 6 to 12 month rental agreement. Because of that he instead bought a camper van, plopped it out of the way in one of the companies carparks, and lived there.
    When I found out I was amazed that no one had questioned it, but he pointed out that some of management knew, but were turning a blind eye because he'd work any extra shifts that were offered rather than just sitting in his camper. It was a huge food processing company that ran 24/7, so he'd use the microwaves in the staff canteens to cook his food, the staff toilets to answer natures call, and the showers that were there for the deep cleaning crews to rinse off their chemical suits before taking them off and storing them.
    He was there for about 2 years in the end, and he only realised he needed to get on with his life when his divorce paperwork got delivered, by the postal, TO HIS CAMPER ! The solicitor had used the company address, but added "Sage green Ford Transit Camper van, registration number [XXXX XXX], North end of carpark B", and Royal Mail actually knocked on his vans door and delivered it just before his shift was due to start ! The fact that he was now getting mail delivered to him there was a huge wakeup call.
    The thing is, he'd been living there rent free for around 2 years, he hadn't had council tax bills, water bills, electric bills (the camper had more than enough solar panels and batteries to run his fridge, the fan in his heater, and the little TV he had in there, so no mains hook up was needed), or gas bills, he'd been using the heavily subsidised company shop for food, he only left the carpark a couple times a month to refill the Jerry cans he used for his diesel heater and to buy any non food related bits and bobs he needed (he'd also needed to take the van for a couple of MOTs during that time) he'd been doing 4 hours of overtime every night, and an 8 hour shift on most Sundays because that was double time, so the lack of any major outgoings combined with his monthly wages being pretty inflated by all the overtime meant he was able to put a pretty substantial deposit on a flat less than a month later, and moved in not long after that.
    I moved away from the area not many months after that, but during one of the last chats I had with him there I asked how he was re adjusting to "Bricks and mortar life"? He just said "I'd forgot how fu**ing expensive living in a normal home was".

    Out of the 5 years being in my truck I have only parked it on the streets for 5 months, everyone asks where I plan to travel but I did it to stop my rent slavery. No registration or fuel bill, about $300 in electricty for 3 years so far and saving money without working full time and doing mostly as I please. I will never live in a regular house again it has worked out so well, no house mates, not landlords kicking me out or telling me what to do and no stress when I do have to move, I own it and can do upgrades without the bs regulations of a regular house because its tied to land which is why tiny houses don't solve any problems, get a truck if you want more space, mine is 7x2.4 meters and it still fits in a regular car park if I can hang the ass over the curb :)

    All I want is everything to stop costing so much in London. The Gov is making life harder and harder...
    I work hard everyday to feel like the Gov don't care about us or any Brit tbh.
    I just want a place to call home after work, and my ish-partner, her life is tough atm, but sadly the job I do don't make enough to help her and myself, so it's hard. If I can find a job that makes more I can give us both and her kid a better future.

  • @callum
    @callum หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    smart idea mate, i was thinking of doing the same except just with a touring caravan. plan was to ask around and find someone willing to let me slap it on their land for a small price monthly 😎 wise minds think alike! now that i’ve watched your video, a van would be better i reckon, to prevent issues with councils having a caravan on the land etc.

    • @LIFEOFSIofficial
      @LIFEOFSIofficial  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Exactly that mate. You’ll draw less attention in a van. I never had a problem in central London over the 18 months. Know people still doing it, never had an issue. Worst that will happen is that you’ll have to move. Good luck with it 🥷✌️

  • @b123inky
    @b123inky หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Wrong. Ask your local council if you can. You will find you are likely in breach of planning regulations. Remember the national news issue a few years back of the group of travellers who bought a piece of land to be told by the Council they could not live there in their caravans and the battles that then ensued- "You are entitled to stay in the caravan for 28 days without issue. You are also allowed to stay in it when it is related to the land. A good example is during lambing season, you may be required to be nearby at all times during that period. Outside of good reasons like this, there may well be issues".

    • @jedics1
      @jedics1 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Same problem in Aust which is why I did a properly stealth truck build that is virtually a cloaking device anywhere outside of residential areas, the more oblivious ppl and government are to what your doing the more peaceful your life becomes in my experience. It also opens up possibilities for unconventional living arrangements that would not be possible in a camper. Like at a business which I did for a year because its just another truck on the lot even when officials do inspections.

    • @LIFEOFSIofficial
      @LIFEOFSIofficial  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I chose not to ask the council if I can live in a van that I own on land that they don’t. Never had a problem, neither has anyone I know. Very unlikely you’ll have a problem if you’re on your own.

    • @jedics1
      @jedics1 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@LIFEOFSIofficial Depends on where you are doing it, there are plenty of stories with the opposite experience. All it takes is one person with too much time on their hands to tell the council about you and then the headaches begin. But my attitude is that I need somewhere to live more than I need to follow the law so Im doing this until they give me prison which also sovles my housing problem :)

    Errr... well, I haven't got away with it.
    I've been living on a piece of private land (on a farm - on and off, since 2020 - for £12/night - it's recently gone up because of electricity costs).
    It certainly wasn't free. I kept asking around, but no one had anything available.
    Hence why my savings have been going down rapidly.
    I had to have insurance on my van. Although I have SORN it and it's just passed its MOT.
    Glad that you got away with it, but I really don't know how you managed to park on that space without insurance.

    • @callum
      @callum หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      the landowner gave him permission, it’s private land, therefore doesn’t need insurance to be Parked there while sorn, simple

    • @AlexAlex-lg7hc
      @AlexAlex-lg7hc หลายเดือนก่อน

      £12 a night, what's that? £84 a week, or £336 a month. And you're complaining?

    • @CamperVan-K
      @CamperVan-K หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AlexAlex-lg7hc Do you know me AlexAlex? Was my response to the young man really a complaint?
      I was stating a fact to the young man, and other people who live in vans (by choice or not), that it's not that easy to get stuff for free - and you shouldn't be led to believe that you can get everything for free.
      And it's true, I have been living off of my savings (which are going down rapidly which is stressful in itself).
      It's hard when you're a 60+ year old woman who's had everything taken from her at this time of her life (redundancy, home, family, pension and inheritance), as well as it being difficult to find employment no matter how hard you try.

    • @LIFEOFSIofficial
      @LIFEOFSIofficial  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Campervan-K tbh with you £12 a night seems a lot to me. But then you say about electricity so assuming you’re hooked up and have water too?
      I was off-grid so didn’t need anything other than somewhere to park.
      Sorry to hear you’re experiencing what you are. I wish nothing but good things for you ✌️
