  • UGA vs Alabama for the National Championship in Indianapolis - imagine reading that headline a decade ago. Yet there we were Monday night, and when the confetti settled there Kirby Smart and his players were celebrating the first Bulldog title in over 40 years. On Late Kick Live Ep 226 Josh Pate discussed the impact this win could have not only on the UGA program, but also for the rest of College Football. Which lessons taught by Kirby Smart could apply to several other programs in their quests to regain traction or blaze a trail to the top for the first time? How big will this be for the Georgia program moving forward? How important was it for the Dawgs to get over the Alabama hump? Is it possible this could change the perception so many have had of Kirby Smart? What were the things that stood out the most to you about UGA vs Alabama Monday night? They did that after a lot of years. Lots of programs would have done that after that many years of mediocrity.
      The problem is that there is a lot of luck when it comes to getting a new coach. Smart ended up being the real deal and a perfect fit, but most of the time it doesn't work out and 'mediocre good' turns into 'mediocre bad' or 'total shit' with the next coach.

      @@ronniejdio9411 Yeah, it worked out perfectly. Timing is the other thing that so many fans who are quick to fire don't consider enough. Some years there aren't any great options out there, so you can end up firing your coach just to get another less than desirable option for several more years. Sometimes I think getting a guy like Richt is the worst thing that can happen because then you are stuck in mediocrity for 10-15 years rather than a truly poor coach and a change in 4 years.

    One thing Josh forgot to mention that goes hand-in-hand with the recruiting budget and effort is patience. It took Kirby Smart six years to win a national championship for Georgia. The administration had to not only support Smart in what he was doing, but they had to be patient and give him time to build his team and his brand. Most schools will not give a coach six years to build a program. Texas is a prime example. Mack Brown spent more time at Texas than the three coaches who have followed him combined. LSU is another example. They got rid of a coach less than two years after a perfect season and a national championship because he couldn't repeat that feat. I could go on and on. The point is a school has to give a coach time to build a program. Simply because a program has a history of winning doesn't mean they are entitled to championships, as many administrations and fans think.

      Actually Kirby may have come in already a leg up, because it didn't take him 6 years to show results, it only took 2 instead (SEC 'ship, CFP final). Meaning he already had talent on hand when he arrived, as UGA was never lacking in talent under Richt (except compared to bama's slightly). So it's not like he had to go on some crusade, but he did have to implement a fine tuning process which got him over the top, so yeah patience was key, but it's not that hard being patient when you see yourself getting closer year after year...(just my opinion)

      So for the last 40 years UGA just didn't care as much as other fans of schools that got multiple national championships during that time? No, they just finally got a coach who can get it done. So during the decade of Shula and Debose, Alabama fans just didn't want it very much? No, they just had a few bad coach hires before they found the man Saban. Yes, you need a program with a dedicated fan base and money, but none of that will help without the right coach to lead the way, on and off the field. There are lots of schools in the SEC with just as much fan support and willingness to pay as UGA, but without the right guy guiding the ship, it is just a waste of money, and supporters realise that become less and less willing to shell out money.

    A lot of Bama fans saying their top receiver getting injured stopped them from winning. I guess that’s what happens when you build your team on one person. If they go out then the whole team collapses. Georgia’s been dealing with injuries all year and it was a “next man up” mentality which is something I hear Bama fans say all the time. But now all of a sudden they won’t say that. It’s all “But if’s”. You can’t say certain things and abandon them when they don’t work for you. Go Dawgs!!

      What you are failing to realize, is that is usually how Bama is built. This year, they were not as good. The season tells you that. They were among the 10 youngest rosters in all of fbs, before those injuries. They were more reliant on one or 2 players then they have been the last decade. It's just the truth of the team. Also, Georgia was the most healthiest going into that game then they had been all season. Bama was at it's most beat up of all season. Not saying they would have beat Georgia. Georgia was the more complete team this year. But it's simply the facts. Saying it is the facts is not a excuse. It is what it is.

    A lot of truth here, but the problem with budgets is that you need someone who knows what he is doing putting that money to good use. The problem now is that you are going to have coaches realising that people are looking at this as a measure of future success and go out of their way to blow their money. Hell, I've worked for companies (and the gov.) where managers and sales execs try to rip though money to make it look like they are doing something productive.
    The key to UGA's success is not money spent. The key is that they have a great coach who knows what needs to be done, knows how to get it done, and won't settle for anything less than perfection, on and off the field. Hell, people forget (or are too young to have seen it) that Alabama had the crap decade from Dubose to Shula before they got Saban. They were just as willing to spend money at that time, but it wouldn't have mattered if they had 10 times the budget.

    Josh---can it be done by others? sure. but the big overarching issue with most other teams other than bama and a couple of others is this--what kind of high school talent is available without leaving your state? texas, florida and georgia all have great high school talent. in fact, they have so much that so many kids have to go out of state to play at all. but case in point--Tennessee should be a perennial top 10 team. they were under Fulmer. But he went to texas, california, the carolinas etc to get kids because the instate talent numbers are pathetic in tennessee. if you're not able to get 2/3 of your roster from out of state who are extremely talented, then you're going to lose this battle.
    just think about it--how many top shelf high school kids from georgia go out of state? some really good ones do, no doubt. will anderson, tank bigsby just to name 2 current kids. sometimes when georgia doesn't produce enough talent at a certain position, we end up going elsewhere to find kids. but we don't leave the state unless we have to.
    one other thing georgia does better than anyone just about is cementing relationships with high school coaches at key high schools both in georgia and around the southeast. we go down to american heritage and pull kids from there routinely. and most south florida kids know who we are even though they are inundated with Miami propaganda. our tentacles run deep just about everywhere. and now we will have even deeper reach into texas to get kids from there. we may even pull a kid or two from oklahoma. but honestly, we are really cherry picking when we leave the state of georgia.
    it's not just one thing that has made kirby successful. it's the entire program. also, look at what coaches routinely visit our pro days. Belichick is one of them. he is in athens as much as or more than the falcons who are not even an hour from athens. that's because we run serious defensive schemes that translate well to the pro level. this is all saban-related stuff. kirby learned it from him, and he has continued that.
    lots of things go into this equation, and the university has bought into kirby's methodology. he has asked for a lot and has responded with winning in return. he has justified nearly every penny of additional expense.

    It's not just the Budget! It's the Culture!!! Kirby is 100% correct on that... DAWG NATION is huge! We love our DAWGS, and it's a Culture thing built by coach SMART!!! Pun intended!!! He has built from the ground up, a Culture of players who care more about this team, this institution, this state, our fan base, and eachother then any other! Kirby is a Dominant factor as to why Alabama is loosing its luster. Nick Saban make no mistake is a great head coach. As of now arguably the best in history! However when Kirby left, Bama started slipping. Coach Smart has a vision that most coaches do not! He is humble, keeps his players humble and hungry! Drives them to be the best, no! As close to Perfect as possible! He doesn't look for just a Star player. He looks for guys who will come together as a team, a brotherhood. Guys who all share his vision of what Football is supposed to be, and how it should be played. When he says they "BUY IN" that's exactly what he means. Those guys would rather loose a limb, or be carried off in a stretcher then leave eachother hanging!!! That's what Kirby brought to UGA! It's not just the money, though yes! That helps a lot. Kirby Brought in a walk on to play over 5 stars, because that walk on proved himself! That walk on worked until he cried and kept pushing through every nasty comment, every insult, and every doubter started learning that that walk on Stetson Bennett was FKING SPECIAL!!! We call him "Staquavious" when he balls out! If you want to know why UGA is so Dominant, look at the players first! Ladd McKonkey a 2 star, who is absolutely a beast and work horse for UGA now. Look at BROCK/BLOCK BOWERS and his work ethic, as well as all of their bond! Look at Darnell
    "Granddaddy" Washington ( shout out to topbillin), look at Smith, Starks, Dumas Johnson, Jaylen Carter (The best player in college football), Jacksaint, Jackson, Edward's, Milton, (Offensive side) Smith, AD Mitchell, Ringo, look at the O-Line! My God! Everyone fights for eachother, and will get in eachother a## if necessary! Mostly they all believe in the man next to them! They believe in Todd, Kirby, and the other coaches. They believe in the program! From top to bottom UGA is it's own Culture now! We lost that! Kirby brought it back! UGA WILL REPEAT THIS YEAR! GO FOR 2 IN 2022!!! However win, lose or draw season after season, Kirby Smart has started a Legacy! Stetson Bennett and all the others are about to cement their legacies in history! They already have in my opinion! DAWG NATION isn't a Budget! It's a CULTURE!!! One we are very proud of. Though I do see you're point with some teams handcuffing them selves with tiny Budgets. That said, don't make it sound like it's all money please! Kirby Smart brought back UGA Culture more then anything else! Physical, dynamic, in you're face football!
    If I may make one final comment. People who think Stetson Bennett is undeserving of that Heisman Finalists spot, or don't think he can play in the NFL, have obviously been living under a rock! Go back and watch that young man's story, then watch every last game for UGA he played, listen to his scout team story. That guys special! I hate he bloomed so late, and I wish we had him for 2 more year's! That guy is the best Game Manager in the business! Reads the defense, looks off defenders, and has real speed. He will also lay it all out on the line for his team! Staquavious Bennett is one of the best gun slinger quarterbacks to ever attend UGA! Yes! He is a bit of a Gun Slinger when he wants to be, but man look at some of that guys passes! Extremely tight windows! Yet, he gets it done!
    I apologize for the passion, but it's not right how people treat the guy, nor the team at times!
    To all MY DAWGS going to play O-Cry-O State, and to my favorite QB Staquavious Bennett, you guys BALL OUT and RUN O-Cry-O out of Georgia in the first half! GO DAWGS!!!!!!

    Josh that was an absolute fantastic video, I'm tired of all these people complaining from all these other teams saying the exact same thing that the only reason that Georgia won is because of all the talent that they had, that is just lazy, it's hard work and since 2016 Kirby Smart has been laying the foundation for this with hard work, recruiting, and determination.. I mean what was he doing the day after the National Championship win, he didn't even take a breather to go celebrate, he was out recruiting and continuing to build on what we just started.. just ask Dan Mullen how much recruiting means in college football, because if he was willing to put in the amount of work that Kirby Smart does, instead of out there windsurfing and wave boarding in Florida he might still have a job... it's not hard to recruit these days, these athletes in these players they want to go to a school that they know is committed to winning and have a formula and a foundation that's proven to work, like Alabama, now Georgia has a national championship on his resume so it'll be even easier for him to recruit... Clemson and Ohio State or other college programs and also recruited a high level, it's not hard you just have to put in the work..

    Let say 30 teams take your advice how does it change anything compared to the current situation other than everyone’s budget is now higher? Keeping up with Joneses isn’t the answer, it means the system is broken. Outside a few southern states no state is willing to throw that much money in to football programs. Even Nebraska a one school state with a rabid fan base and wealthy donors have a cap they won’t go over. You need local talent, top spending for the best coaches and a little luck.

    • @joelaton1062
      @joelaton1062 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But you just admitted they will not do what it takes to compete. That extra money is keeping up with the facilities arms race. Extra money gets you better coaching staffs. Extra money lets you hire the maximum amount of analysts. Extra money gets you the best strength and nutrition programs. all of that affects recruiting. If those teams refuse to do that, they should stop whining about the system in my opinion.

Do you think every coach is equal to Saban or Dabo or that money can just create more 4 & 5 star players? Even if the top 70 teams all were on equal footing, not all of them can have the same net benefits.

    • @mashthereal
      @mashthereal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then the 4 and 5 stars start to evenly distribute throughout the country more. Go look at recruiting rankings on 247 sports…top 3 spots got like 75% of all the five stars.
      With that being said, GO DAWGS and hopefully no one starts to invest more money in recruiting 😂😅

    • @moonbot7613
      @moonbot7613 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mashthereal well the transfer portal, NIL and playoff expansion will all be beneficial for college football but everyone on this channel seems to be against. Transfer portal will help prevent the stock piling of players which will keep a free flow of talent. It’s only issue is that it still needs the lower tier player to funnel down to lower divisions, which can be hard for an athletes ego. NIL- will draw higher rated kids to further destinations or lower ranked teams for obvious reasons. Playoff expansion- won’t cycle out the top 3 that dominate but will include a larger base of rotating teams each year that can use the playoff to build off. Which creates more hope for more fan bases, gives more reasons to spend money within reason and donors can sponsor talent to add the needed boosts to programs at times.

      I mean it’s a big part of it, I never faulted Texas fans for saying What it Colt McCoy, bc they probably beat Bama if he’s in. Put it like this, even with those injuries, if Tide receivers just hang on to the ball and don’t have 6 drops (2 were TDs) they could’ve very likely defeated UGA again. It was some good fortune for the Dawgs but that type of game doesn’t happen too often. Congrats nonetheless on the title! RTR

    What lesson did they teach? We all know recruiting wins out and more so now than ever because kids only want to play for playoff contenders. TN Vols (new coach) FL Gators (fired coach) S Carolina (new coach) Clemson (down year) it was kind of the perfect storm. Fo the last 5 years Kirby has at least one game where he gets blow own by 3 scores. The same happened this year but this time he had the depth to get a mulligan.

    • @sethmartin7084
      @sethmartin7084 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've wondered the same. Plus they had that veteran laden defense. We'll see if they can keep it going. I'll say they'll have more talented QBs than Stetson Bennett and their WRs will probably improve. But this year everything fell right for UGA, and they stayed decently healthy as the year wore on rather than keep getting guys hurt like Bama (not excuses but it's facts). couple other teams were down or young. But they'll be back in it. UGA's good program
