She resubmitted paperwork, the fees, goes through another interview, she got a letter from the college dean, I submitted proof that she had a place to stay and she was still denied. People who have never had to deal with immigration or with someone they care about crying because they're doing everything right and still can't come don't understand how broken it is.
I am from South Africa. My Grandmother moved to the US in March 2020, and was planning to come back to South Africa March 2022 to visit. She tried to get her papers approved in late 2020 already, but the US only in approved that she could leave in AUGUST 2023. Almost 3 years she waited. She then passed away in October and I never got to see her for 1 last time. We couldn't even fly over to attend her funeral because immigration control declined my ENTIRE FAMILY's (including all relatives) request to fly over for a few days to attend the funeral. She died alone
I feel his pain. A while back I applied for a student visa to the US and believe me when I say this, I didn't come short on my end at all. The college I was enrolling in accepted me and I got all my paperwork in order but to my surprise, I got rejected by the US immigration office in my country all for no reason whatsoever. The guy reviewing my case had no mercy on any of the people applying at his window. He rejected everyone who approached him one after one and my poor luck set me up with him and all is history. I will never forgive that man as long as I walk on this green earth. I pray for his downfall every chance I get and I truly think he's the reason I got rejected. No one can fathom how clean and sorted out my paperwork was. The interview went super natural and jolly but for some reason he turned me down. Corruption is real and people like him have to be fired and thrown back to his country to truly feel the pain he's inflicted upon countless other poor souls like me.

I used to work for immigration. The amount of absolute pure fucking incompetentce and stupidity i saw while working there haunts me to this day. I've seen so many people's lives straight up ruined due to immigration officers fucking up some paperwork and then refusing to rectify the situation because that would be admitting fault. Some will let grumpiness and having a bad day influence their decisions. Some are just straight up racist. There's 0 accountability. Oh, and the USCIS customer service phone workers get next to 0 training and there's super high turnover. Hope you feel comfortable putting your life in the hands of someone whose experience with immigration law is a couple of PowerPoints and literal trial and error teaching themselves as they go.

I sympathize with this too much. Myself and my partner have been trying to get her back into the US after she couldn’t leave during the covid times. We did everything right, filed all extensions, and played by the book EXACTLY how the USCIS officers would tell us on the phone. We found out a YEAR after she could leave and left (while extensions were processing) that they were denied due to a timely filing. I was literally told when to file the extensions by an officer and even had a tier 2 officer tell me (based on all the previous phone calls) that the first officer we spoke with gave us conflicting information and led us astray. It’s now been 2 years and ~$10,000 in and we are STILL waiting to hear responses. This is the most helpless I’ve ever felt in life and it hurts me everyday to think about how this can even happen. 😢

I'm Australian and I used to live in the USA until I had my visa revoked for absolutely no reason what-so-ever when I was abroad in Europe for work. I was therefore stranded in Berlin and unable to board my flight back to NYC (where my home and entire life was located). I was a full-time musician and about to start a nation-wide tour of the US and Canada also. Therefore the entire tour was effected and I essentially lost my home, all of my close friends, most of my belongings and my career was absolutely flipped on its head. Like you, I also hired the best immigration lawyers I could find. And after a mountain of legal fees and a lengthy process, every application I made was rejected and I was never given an official reason. The decision of that one individual quite literally changed the trajectory of my life. I still can't believe it tbh.

I'm American, born in Philadelphia and lived there until 22 but I've been living in Ireland for the past 12 years. Every year I make 1 or 2 return trips from Ireland to Philadelphia. I have a US passport and still US citizen. Immigration searches, interogates and harasses me every single time i try and return home. They are hateful people lacking any empathy or soul. They are also on huge power trips. It makes me hate where I am from.
Do 3 things: 1. File a lawsuit against the agent and the department for financial damages due to their incompetence. Gather testimonials from other people in e-sports that have had issues specifically with this one agent and build your case. 2. Contact your elected representatives and fill them in on the situation. Contacting a senator or congressperson can actually make a decent impact. 3. Don't stop fighting. You might have had to drop the team, but continue the pressure. Who knows? You might actually get someone fired.

can confirm, the US immigration system is broken!!! i got married in early 2021 to a non resident, and we're finally just now granted permission by our glorious overlords to start living together in the same country permanently. neither of us have any criminal record, neither have even as much as a speeding ticket. she's not from some country the US has beef with, she's from ireland, born and raised. i'm from the US, born and raised. it took us three years of groveling on our hands and knees, doing everything perfectly, filling out every form perfectly and immediately (even though the forms are trash and nobody is interested in improving anything or even clarifying anything), and paying every fee immediately in full, and even having to call lawyers, and after thousands of dollars, and three years of our lives being needlessly spent apart, i'm finally able to actually be with my wife. and it's not like anyone even investigated us. nobody ever even really questioned us, she had one interview at the very end and it was pretty basic. it's not like these ppl are doing some kind of "due diligence", they're absolutely not doing their due diligence, that would take doing actual work, and they don't seem to do that. nor have any interest in doing that. it seemed like they just wanted to make us give up, like as if they thought if they kept taking as long as they possibly could, ppl would just stop asking them to do anything. i'm almost convinced the whole US immigration system is trolling ppl just to reduce immigration

My wife and I had a bad run in with USCIS during her immigration process. We got a shitty agent for our interview and he almost ruined everything. I had to get immigration lawyers involved. Our agent grilled us for 3 hours and at the end he said “this is usually a quick process but unfortunately, today, you got me.”
If someone says that, they shouldn't have a job. Pretty much every single one of us came from immigrants and wouldn't be here if our families didn't leave their country. I don't get the people who want have even tougher immigration laws when they're first gen Americans or just immigrated. Like you want it harder for other people to come in? It’s on purpose that our immigration process that’s slow, bureaucratic, and outright cruel. Those lucky enough to get a visa, become indentured to the visa holder (their employer). I'm from Australia and a friend of mine spent about the same time as you setting up a tour across America playing guitar at bars and the like, was a dream of his as a musician. American Immigration declined him after he landed in the US and he had no choice but to pay for a flight back to Australia and cancel his whole tour. he was absolutely crushed.
Charlie, you need to write a formal letter to your state representative. This is what they are for. They can get their office involved in these types of situations and fast track a solution. I did this in NC. I wrote a letter to Roy Cooper about issues with the IRS and unfair treatment and taxation and received a response with a commitment to find a resolution. It’s a lot of paperwork that they will request from you in order to help but it’s worth it. I never heard a word from the IRS afterwards and the impending audit never came.

I feel his pain. A while back I applied for a student visa to the US and believe me when I say this, I didn't come short on my end at all. The college I was enrolling in accepted me and I got all my paperwork in order but to my surprise, I got rejected by the US immigration office in my country all for no reason whatsoever. The guy reviewing my case had no mercy on any of the people applying at his window. He rejected everyone who approached him one after one and my poor luck set me up with him and all is history. I will never forgive that man as long as I walk on this green earth. I pray for his downfall every chance I get and I truly think he's the reason I got rejected. No one can fathom how clean and sorted out my paperwork was. The interview went super natural and jolly but for some reason he turned me down. Corruption is real and people like him have to be fired and thrown back to his country to truly feel the pain he's inflicted upon countless other poor souls like me.

I used to work for immigration. The amount of absolute pure fucking incompetentce and stupidity i saw while working there haunts me to this day. I've seen so many people's lives straight up ruined due to immigration officers fucking up some paperwork and then refusing to rectify the situation because that would be admitting fault. Some will let grumpiness and having a bad day influence their decisions. Some are just straight up racist. There's 0 accountability.
Oh, and the USCIS customer service phone workers get next to 0 training and there's super high turnover. Hope you feel comfortable putting your life in the hands of someone whose experience with immigration law is a couple of PowerPoints and literal trial and error teaching themselves as they go.

I sympathize with this too much. Myself and my partner have been trying to get her back into the US after she couldn’t leave during the covid times. We did everything right, filed all extensions, and played by the book EXACTLY how the USCIS officers would tell us on the phone.
We found out a YEAR after she could leave and left (while extensions were processing) that they were denied due to a timely filing. I was literally told when to file the extensions by an officer and even had a tier 2 officer tell me (based on all the previous phone calls) that the first officer we spoke with gave us conflicting information and led us astray.
It’s now been 2 years and ~$10,000 in and we are STILL waiting to hear responses. This is the most helpless I’ve ever felt in life and it hurts me everyday to think about how this can even happen. 😢

I'm Australian and I used to live in the USA until I had my visa revoked for absolutely no reason what-so-ever when I was abroad in Europe for work. I was therefore stranded in Berlin and unable to board my flight back to NYC (where my home and entire life was located). I was a full-time musician and about to start a nation-wide tour of the US and Canada also. Therefore the entire tour was effected and I essentially lost my home, all of my close friends, most of my belongings and my career was absolutely flipped on its head. Like you, I also hired the best immigration lawyers I could find. And after a mountain of legal fees and a lengthy process, every application I made was rejected and I was never given an official reason. The decision of that one individual quite literally changed the trajectory of my life. I still can't believe it tbh.

i got married in early 2021 to a non resident, and we're finally just now granted permission by our glorious overlords to start living together in the same country permanently. neither of us have any criminal record, neither have even as much as a speeding ticket.
she's not from some country the US has beef with, she's from ireland, born and raised. i'm from the US, born and raised.
it took us three years of groveling on our hands and knees, doing everything perfectly, filling out every form perfectly and immediately (even though the forms are trash and nobody is interested in improving anything or even clarifying anything), and paying every fee immediately in full, and even having to call lawyers, and after thousands of dollars, and three years of our lives being needlessly spent apart, i'm finally able to actually be with my wife.
and it's not like anyone even investigated us. nobody ever even really questioned us, she had one interview at the very end and it was pretty basic. it's not like these ppl are doing some kind of "due diligence", they're absolutely not doing their due diligence, that would take doing actual work, and they don't seem to do that. nor have any interest in doing that.
it seemed like they just wanted to make us give up, like as if they thought if they kept taking as long as they possibly could, ppl would just stop asking them to do anything. i'm almost convinced the whole US immigration system is trolling ppl just to reduce immigration

Yes. That's exactly correct. They don't particularly try to hide it. They intentionally make the process as big a headache as possible to try and convince people to just give up, because this country is obsessed with the misconception that "immigration = bad." You either give up or immigrate illegally, which they're also okay with you doing because then you're a statistic that contributes to the exact narrative they're trying to push that immigrants are evil and need to be banned.
That is actually crazy, I applaud you for fighting so hard.

"it'd take them 20 years" is spot on, my grandparents live in US and have applied for me and my parents and sister for a visa. that was more than 18 years ago, we've now reached the final step where the office would schedule an interview with us and then if they see fit we'll get to see my grandpa who's in bad health now. Its been 3 years since we reached this final step and for some reason the office just doesn't give us an schedule. every 2 months we get an email saying the procedures are taking longer because of covid but Its a whole year since covid has ended T_T
That's just fucking wild, and the covid excuse isn't even an "excuse" anymore that's just a way to say "yeah uhm, I don't know man it's gonna take awhile longer than you think" like what the fuck. 😭
@millennium7909 exactly, when we ask lawyers how long it'd take for them to schedule an interview everyone agrees on a few weeks to a few months NOT 3 GODDAMN YEARS (few months is already outrageous for a simple interview)
many people and especially Americans don't understand how insanely fucked our immigration system truly is. People like to say so much shit about illegal immigrants and the like but they never even have an ounce of understanding for why they have to immigrate illegaly is because if they didnt they wouldn't be able to escape whatever situation they are in or move to America for possibly decades because of how backwards our immigration system has become over the last 30 years. Anyways I hope you and your family are able to hopefully soon finally be able to immigrate here so you can be with your family.

My wife and I had a bad run in with USCIS during her immigration process. We got a shitty agent for our interview and he almost ruined everything. I had to get immigration lawyers involved.
Our agent grilled us for 3 hours and at the end he said “this is usually a quick process but unfortunately, today, you got me.”
If someone says that, they shouldn't have a job. Pretty much every single one of us came from immigrants and wouldn't be here if our families didn't leave their country.
I don't get the people who want have even tougher immigration laws when they're first gen Americans or just immigrated. Like you want it harder for other people to come in? Make it harder for potentially your family members coming in?
It’s on purpose that our immigration process that’s slow, bureaucratic, and outright cruel. Those lucky enough to get a visa, become indentured to the visa holder (their employer). Those who come here via non- legal channels are forced into a black market workforce that’s ripe for corporations to exploit.

I'm from Australia and a friend of mine spent about the same time as you setting up a tour across America playing guitar at bars and the like, was a dream of his as a musician. American Immigration declined him after he landed in the US and he had no choice but to pay for a flight back to Australia and cancel his whole tour. he was absolutely crushed.

Charlie, you need to write a formal letter to your state representative. This is what they are for. They can get their office involved in these types of situations and fast track a solution. I did this in NC. I wrote a letter to Roy Cooper about issues with the IRS and unfair treatment and taxation and received a response with a commitment to find a resolution. It’s a lot of paperwork that they will request from you in order to help but it’s worth it. I never heard a word from the IRS afterwards and the impending audit never came.
