Besides the aboriginals, most of the Chinese Malaysian and Chinese Taiwanese populations came from the same regions of Fujian/Hokkien and Guangdong/Canton areas hundreds of years ago. A lot of Taiwanese are classified as ethnic Chinese, but are actually mixed. For example, Taiwanese president Tsai is a mix of Hakka Chinese and Paiwan aboriginal, but since her grandfather is Hakka and her grand mother is Paiwan, Tsai is classified as Hakka Chinese.

That's interesting because I was in Taiwan about a week ago. I was amazed by Taipei, the safety, the cleanliness, people's sense of civility and all the good coffee shops (I'm a fan of coffee shops, this is the first thing I visit when I travel in a new city haha). I didn't visit the rural areas because I was afraid that it would be difficult to move without a car. But I could have visited Kaohsiung, I think the only reason why I didn't visit it was laziness. I'm also a huge fan of big cities so being in Taipei was incredibly amazing for me. I want to come again in January 2024. I'm living in Quebec, Canada and going back to Taiwan looks like a good idea to escape our annoying and depressing winters. Some people go to Cuba, Florida or Mexico, I will go to Taiwan! :p (I mean, if I can... it depends on a few variables)
That's interesting. My friend said the same thing about the coffee shops in Taiwan after he visited there the first time. He despises starbucks and laughs at anyone saying starbucks' coffee is good.

Kaohsiung surprised me very much when I was there in 2016. Didn't know about the city before, but a friend of mine was studying chinese there, so I went to visit. I spent almost a week there and never ran out of things to do. Highly recommend!
I am a Taiwanese who came across your channel a few months ago. You are one of my favorite TH-camr and an amazing storyteller. Taiwanese people love food so much. There is a saying we use to greet each other. Instead of asking 'how are you?', we would say 'have you eaten?'. I believe food is a big part of our culture. You can also find something to eat 24/7 in Taiwan. Indigenous culture in Taiwan also fascinates me. Some professors believe that the origin of Austronesian ethnic groups is from Taiwan due to the diversity of languages and the evidence of Papermulberry seeds carried by indigenous people to other islands. However, research and discussions are still ongoing in the academic field. Taiwanese people are known for being super welcoming and friendly. Taiwan is definitely a hidden gem to explore. Great job, Drew. If you ever visit Taiwan, I would love to show you a different view of Taiwan.
Don’t feel sad Taiwan - Xina is actively trying to steal land territory from Mongolia, Kazakhstan, India,Afghanistan, Burma/Myanmar, Vietnam, Tibet, Philippines, and Bhutan and all of Africa. The CCP is horrible aggressors and bullies.
Taiwan needs 100,000 proper drones to defend itself. That would help. I know they are building but it is going quite slow. But let's hope war won't happen.
Do you mean TINY COUNTRY? My family and I have visited twice from Australia and it's our favorite country in the world!!! We love Taiwan sooooooo much! Amazing scenery, beautiful food and such warm hearted kind people!
Lived here 17 years and still love it. recently I have been depressed about the football and this sort of stuff reminds me that I don't need Leeds United to stay happy and have hobbies.
I was lucky enough to live in Taipei for years and could never quite find the right words to describe just how delightful it is. Red and gold temples, noodle shops, mountains, coffee houses, night markets, film festivals, plants spilling over balconies, and the loveliest people. A big bustling city with an underlying gentleness and serenity.
I‘ve been twice in Taiwan and I am so amazed by this country, but first and foremost by the people. Definitely one of my favorite nations too I want to thank you for this video because this will raise the awareness that this country deserves. Greetings from a Spanish guy living in Germany ✌🏼 #visittaiwan🇹🇼 #taiwanisarealcountry
This is probably the the best video I’ve ever seen introducing Taiwan in every aspect. The most amazing part is that almost every single one you talked with speaks English directly. Without the translation, there are no errors, and it allows them to express their feelings more precisely. Ps.I’m a Taiwanese and I’m really amazed by how good this video is.
I’m American born Chinese & my family was here in USA well before the Chinese civil war that caused the split between the mainland CCP & Taiwan ROC so I don’t have a real connection to politics of this. I visited Taiwan in 1977 & 2018 and see how much has changed between those times. Also much teacher when I was young was from one of traditional tribes of Taiwan so she taught us differences between Chinese & tribes. Thank you Drew for showing us the diverse cultures in Taiwan & Taipei is not only part Taiwan that you need visit.
I remember 1 time, I had these 2 customers, both of them have this Chinese face features. For just a conversation, I ask them if they are chinese? And without hesitations, a hand gesture and a facial expression, they quickly answered that they are Taiwanese. They really don't want to be called or be associated with China.
Then they should give all the treasures in the palace museum taken by KMT in 1949 back to China if they are not republic of China anymore and stop using our precious flag designed by national heros of China

OMG! I never gave visiting Taiwan any thought, but your experiences there (the indigenous group in the mountains, the second family who gave you shelter and meals ) showed me how friendly, warm, and inviting the people are. I will move Taiwan further up on my 'Bucket List' because this crowded island has everything I want; great food, shopping, nature, escapes from Taipei when needed, and absolutely beautiful temples/pagodas. Thank you for letting me visit it vicariously. This one will be in 2026 for sure.

@@ANXZ07 if you went there you'd understand. It's what China could have been without communism: free, democratic, open, prosperous, connected to its traditions. People just exude kindness and live their lives freely. It's quite remarkable.
@@ANXZ07 Tsai Ing-wen ISN'T pushing for Taiwanese independence -- just to maintain the status quo as it stands, rather than having China brutally attack these peace-loving people because they're jealous of how much better life is in Taiwan than in mainland China (or, as I like to call it, West Taiwan). It's China, and specifically Xi Jinping, that's pushing to rob Taiwan of its independence by disrupting that status quo. All Taiwan wants is for China to leave them alone. As for when Taiwan became a country, this video summarizes it nicely: Taiwan has its own passport, its own flag, its own government, its own legal system... It operates as an independent country, therefore it really SHOULD be one, even if officially it is not. I'm an American living in Japan, but I have the highest respect for the people of Taiwan (and the LOWEST respect for the despot Xi Jinping!), and would love nothing more than to see Taiwan gain independence -- and maybe even reclaim their rightful seat as the rulers of the Chinese mainland, while they're at it. The CCP kind of stole China from the Taiwanese government 70 some odd years ago, after all -- Taiwan is the rightful heir to all of China, and the Chinese people would be so much better off if someone like Tsai Ing-wen were in charge. I can only hope that with China's economy and government fast-tracking itself toward collapse these last few years, there may be a political revolution soon and the CCP will fall, giving way to a more democratic government and making China a bit more like its eastern neighbors of Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. The people of China deserve that life -- my heart goes out to them for the conditions they're forced to live under now.

The indigenous people of Taiwan are not only related to the people of the Philippines but also Indonesians, Malays, and Pacific Islanders such as the Māori of New Zealand and the Native Hawaiians of the United States. Yes - there is an island that belongs to the United States called Ni‘ihau whose inhabitants still speak Hawaiian, a language that originated in Taiwan.
Language, history and art of the austronesian indigenous is pretty important because its one of the oldest roots for the Austronesian expansion into the Philippines, then to Malaysia, Indonesia, then further to Madagascar, and east towards polynesia. It would be amazing to figure out the links between the mainland and Taiwan but I am pretty sure all of the austronesian traces at the Mainland (China) side is long gone due to assimilation.
Per international law, Taiwan is a Chinese province. Taiwan is a beautiful province of China. Please express your appreciation for the island of Taiwan without undermining Chinese sovereignty.
Drew you have no idea how cool this was. When i first saw man from the tribe I thought he looked Filipino too because he looks just like someone I know who is half Filipino half white. I always imagined I would not enjoy Taiwan. However, after your video, I am interested and curious. Thank you, Drew, for another great peak at the world.
I went there 24 years ago. I will never forget it. The museum in Taipei was beyond fantastic. And I went to the same night market. A guy did try to rip me off though. But his neighboring vendors scolded him severely. There is such a spiritual vibe there.
Taiwan's freedom was fought for with blood, sweat, and tears. Millions of Kuomintang died for the cause. Martial law was lifted in 1987. It's amazing how fast Taiwan has gone from a brutal dictatorship to a democratic booming economy, with huge major exports to the rest of the world.

I wouldn’t really say Tainan is rural…maybe the outskirts but it’s really a full fledge city.

When did Taiwan become a country?
Why is Tsai Ing-wen pushing for Taiwan independence?
@@ANXZ07 if you went there you'd understand. It's what China could have been without communism: free, democratic, open, prosperous, connected to its traditions. People just exude kindness and live their lives freely. It's quite remarkable.
@@gayzion Avoiding the question only means you're wrong about Taiwan.

Hawaiian did not originate in Taiwan, it originates in Hawaii.
