    As Sri Lankan I can say, this coversation is far more align with what is actually happening in Sri Lanka. I think Wion and First post management need to watch this conversation.
    We voted AKD and we know how big the crisis is. Our generation is prepared to take up this challenge. We will sacrifice our welbeing to position our Sri Lanla where exactly it needed to be.

    SriLanka will never forget the help India extended during difficult times. It has close cultural ties to India, the Land of Buddha. The country will need to balance it's relations with all the super powers carefully. Srilanka hopes all the supperpowers will understand how difficult this is and will forgive , when a small step is taken, that may hurt

    very interesting discussion Miss madma was very accurate most of the time ahd she had very sound knowlege on grassroot level of the situation in sri lanka...only thing I would say she was mistaken is, People of Sri lanaka in not wrong to turn the Rajapaksha's Regiem back in 2015. although economy was much more stable compared to 2022 back then 2010 -2015 govenment was the most corrupted five yers in Sri lankan hisroty in fact that is one o the reasons 2022 happened. Sri lankans was clever enough to end that corrupted rule but unfortunately they did't had any other choice back then NPP was not there at the time. so they brought UNP to the power beacuse that was the onnly option. unfortunately poor management of that goverment led to bringing backa rajapakas's into power aain anad eventually leading to 2022. but I can confidently say Sri lankan people were not wrong to turn over the goverment in 2015 . so 20:30 there was a absoulute need for a change at that time only thing was we didn't have a better option. difference in 2024 is we have a better option which is NPP.

    It must be appreciated that India did come to SL's aid at the time of need with a credit line over 4 Billion and also with their support during debt negotiations. However, India gained a lot by helping SL. We can actually call it as an investment. The connectivity projects that India is pressurizing SL to go ahead with is not in SL's interests and we have to rethink about it.

However, we have to delicately balance what we, as a sovereign nation should achieve, while not stepping on the toes of India! The challenge has to be effectively met by AKD and his team.

    I'm someone who in 2015 didn't believe we needed to change the govt.
    However the central issue in that election was bringing about good governance as the Rajapkses were seen to be acting out (corruption and family members and Rajapakse supporters running amok).
    Sri Lankan general public was swayed in this idea that the next govt could bring good governance as Ranil was seen as a clean politician at the time. But they came into power and was accused of the bond scam and then Easter attacks happened. Then the Rajapakses were chosen again.
    However after COVID and the serious mismanagement of govt funds the country went into bankruptcy so it is strongly believed that most economic development in the country was severely hindered by the successive govts being corrupted as many industries were destroyed by giving preference to imports which also lead to the dollar crisis.
    This is why AKD is considered the best option at this time as people do not have faith in Ranil as well that he is as clean as people are lead to believe because he's supported by those that are considered extremely corrupt.
    Basically all politicians and parties that have been in power during the last 70 odd years are now viewed as being corrupted and that no real development can be expect with them in power.

    Like India, Sri Lanka is an independent nation. There is no shortage of water, and the climate is excellent throughout the year. In fact, Sri Lanka's strategic position astride international shipping lanes places it in the center of economic and security competition in the Indian Ocean Region. The island nation’s deepwater harbors have been the main attractions for many countries with strategic interests in the Indian Ocean. When it comes to leading, everybody has been generous as long as they can get something.
    However, the country lacked good governance and suffered from corruption. As a result, Governments started borrowing, which led to the accumulation of debts. People realized this plight, & voted for Anura. People believe he will address the present issues and adopt neutrality, safeguarding security, prosperity, and uphold the sovereignty of the nation

    A wonderful discussion, although at the beginning Padma Rao got a bit mixed up bout the Governors. Sabaragamuwa has a woman, Champa Janaki Rajaratne, and a man, Tissa Warnasuriya, of Bandarawela, is in Uva.
    Thanks to both of you for having such a positive attitude towards AKD. The NPP had three MPs (Harini is NOT JVP) and with AKD becoming President, Lakshman Nipunaarachchi replaced him. Vijitha Herath (we see little of him in Uva given that he had his entire education in Haldummulla followed by Bandarawela Central where her remembers me) seems determined to remain unobtrusive.

    It's always feels good to analyze from the arm chair. But ground realities differ. I think Srilanka has stated its position regarding India and India should respect that without creating hypothetical assumptions.
    It's no secret India's interference in Srilankan politics, which the people of Srilanka have the right to reject.

  • @fazeemf
    @fazeemf 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Why SL keep voting out regimes at every election in the past 20 years, well there are good reasons for it. Let's start with Mahinda Rajapakse, he was voted out because post 2009 people started to refer to him as the modern day "king". We'll he, his family and cronies really started be believe in the bull crap and they started running the nation as their own kingdom. Having neutralized the Tamils they launched a campaign against the Muslims who stood by the Sinhalees from the time they arrived in the Island many centuries ago and against the LTTE. There was no tolerance for decent people started to disappear in the infamous "white Vans", journalist murdered and news channels set on fire with rampant corruption and nepotism.
    The next election naturally saw the Maithripala Senanayake/Ranil Wickramasinghe brought to power. They whilst fixing some of the excesses of the previous era had issues amongst themselves as they let their egos clash to the point National Security was compromised. The Rajapakses took advantage of it and with the help of friendly neighboring nations helped launch the Easter attacks (yes current evidence point in that direction).
    This paved the way for Gotabaya being voted in as he was seen as the guy who can fix the security issue and save the nation from the "The Muslim Terrorist", well the rest is history as far as his tenor was concerned. Ranil was appointed by parliament to the presidency, post economic crisis. In the previous election he lost his own constituency and due to the voting system his party got one single seat in parliament.
    So, this time around it was resentment towards the establishment and Ranil. Although he stabilized the economy really no one gave credit to him as all knew the so called stability is a eye wash, it was due to the support of India in the initial phase and the IMF after the debt restructuring, NOT due to Ranils capabilities. People are pissed with Ranil as he although may not have directly financially benefited, he did allow his selected friends to rob the nation and collect money for his party to win the next election. Also he turned a blind eye towards the Rjapakses and his corrupt bunch without raising a finger which was the primary call of the protesters.
    So there was always good reasons why voters wanted change in Sri Lanka.
    I feel this discussion over simplified the real issues.

      Thank you for this. I was quite triggered listening to this. There is always a reason why we voted out the previous Presidents ESPECIALLY Mahinda. So whilst I appreciate this veteran Indian Journlaist espousing based on her estimation that is by NO MEANS a reflection why it happened. We wanted clean journalism, not cronies and certainly not blood thirsty dictators who ‘won the war’. This is simplistic, shallow understanding. And will never be a reflection of our lived realities.

      Tamils were not neutralised. It's the Separatist terrorism nurtured by the west and partially India that was neutralised.
      Tamils are very much a thriving and successful society in SL.
      Poor Tamils like poor Sinhalas have same economic problems.
      It's not a racial issue.

    • @fazeemf
      @fazeemf 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chula3155 Whilst the terrorist and terrorism per say was defeated, it also led to the Tamil spirit being silenced and neutralised by the Rajapaksa regime. There was a feeling that the Tamil community had been brought under control and now it was time to turn the attention on the Muslims as well as other religions as well. That was the strategy of the Rajapaksas that eventually back fired.
      The Tamils, Muslim & Christian citizens are doing as well as they can be, within their individual capacities, you can't completely destroy the humas spirit. I believe NO ONE can play God for ever, and decide on the destinies of a entire section of a population, they may succeed temporarily for a short while, but eventually Karma will come around. Look what has become of the self proclaimed king, his family and his crony clowns.

    I would like to comment about Padma Rao Sunderji talking to R Sengupta Interviewer. Throughout the Interview 1st she (having Srilankan political & other knowledge being a reporter/journalist in Srilankan politics for 32 yrs) made a purposeful blunder mentioning 130 people instead of mentioning 130,000 (wantonly killed/massacred/maimed including killing of innocent 10 year old Son of VPrabhakaran after giving him tea/biscuits point blank range like a hungry lion eating him piece by piece, etc. and most importantly hid or concealed the factual true facts of - without willing participation of Indian forces in connaivance with Israel/western countries including China all around 22 countries as per media news, destroyed LTTE & helped ending the war. Veteran Subramaniya Swamy visited Rajapakse’s home like his own cousin, everyone knows SSwamy is main RSS man whom Tiruchy Velusamy accuses the mastermind with Chandrasamy to get rid of Rajivgandhi (Stories about VP or LTTE involvement was a cooked up story by relevant politicians of India. This lady calling Hershel a media person, doesn’t want to speak the real truth to safeguard Modhiji/Current Indian politics out of fear! So, this is the position. Further JVP now NPP of AKD, is well aware what Indian politics. With the help of Indian forces only his guru Rohana Wijeweera & his thousands of fighters were killed by the Indian army during Srimavo regime.
