      My mum used to work at a university many years ago and did audio recordings for foreign language courses. I remember she managed to reduce reverberation through covering the walls with egg cartons made from paper pulp. Perhaps a solution where the cartons are mounted onto a cardboard backing might be more suitable for a domestic situation and suit many people better than applying them directly to the walls.

      @TheStiepen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      When recording with a microphone directly infront of you this does not make a huge difference, as the microphone is getting like 95% of the audio directly and only the other 5% from walls. So you only reduce the volume by 5% and if you can even notice the difference, thats easily fixed by turning up the gain a wee bit

    Great overview Mumbo! I would have liked to see you discuss Condenser vs Dynamic microphones and the pros and cons of each. Sound proofing makes a HUGE difference for you. I need to play with that some more at my desk. Also... I'm really starting to regret not going with an XLR mic (my new one is a USB)

      Xlr mics really are the bees knees tango. I had a cheaply made one that costs like $30 and it was way better than my blue snowball.

    Hey Mumbo, I produce music as well as make Minecraft videos and I ran into the same problem that you had with the acoustic foam. I kept trying to find a bunch of different ways to buy acoustic foam but it was all just very expensive for the amount of actual foam you got. I managed to find a decent deal on Amazon. I got 12 16" x 24" x 1 5/8" thick acoustic acoustic panels from Next Acoustics GearWedge on Amazon for around $70 USD. This was more than enough to cover all of the major portions of my room, including first reflections and the corners, and the quality was amazing, it feels really professional and none of the panels were squished or un-shapen in any way during the packaging/shipping process, which is something that I saw people writing about in reviews of a bunch of different products.

    Tip for folks on budgets: Foam mattress covers (particularly of the 'egg crate' variety) provide great acoustic insulation and cost a fraction as much as professional-grade materials.

    A couple notes about your Sound proofing. I have found that you need more sound proofing the farther you prefer to be away from your mic as you would need to turn up your mic to capture your voice. I usually have my word hole only a couple inches from my mic. For my setup I have my windows mic input volume turned almost completely down and my Alesis USB input turned up. This removes a lot of background noise and cuts down on my voice bouncing.

  • @AHAuwuOK
    @AHAuwuOK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The most important thing is proper acoustic treatment, but it's not as easy as it seems. You can easily screw up your audio quality by "hurr durr moar spiky foam" and making yourself sound muffled, yet still have a lot of unwanted frequencies going back into the mic. I highly advise to do some research from good sources before buying stuff, there is a lot of bullshit going around the internet regarding the use of acoustic panels :P

    Loved the video, you seem to put too much effort into your videos! I filmed a video talking about audio and how important it is and what not, now I'm having second thoughts about uploading it, mine will be put to shame...
    The only bit that annoyed me slightly was the fact that you were talking in the shot, and it didn't match up with what you were saying as I doubt you were saying anything, it is a small thing and probably isn't worth fixing it or going to that much effort to do xP

    My mom does a lot a freelance voice work and has a pretty amazing setup (aside from that stupid Dell computer and how slow it is. Screw that thing.). A Rode Broadcaster mic, to the same the same pre-amp you use, to a condenser, to another voice processing box that does various things, to her audio recording software. Then she has an amp with a switch that goes between her pretty crappy 10 year old Studiomaster headphones to the extremely nice JBL speakers. And blankets aalll around the walls. Blankets everywhere.
    Unfortunately, I have exactly none of that, and I'm stuck with some pretty intermediate stuff :P.

    Good equipment is one thing. Knowing how to speak into a microphone is more important then good equipment.
    Lets be honest about it, Mumbo has a good voice, although he may think differently. Not to low and not to high. But if you listen to other people, how are they speaking? What is the volume and tone color of their voice, are they screaming, talking really loud, or really soft or neutral?
    Lets say it like this, even if you buy a really good microphone and allot of equipment, that does not guarantee you to get a really good sound. You have to know how to speak into a microphone and you also need to have a good voice.

    Do you use the Amazon Affiliate program? It lets you get a few percent on sales through your links. Worth a look if you do not. (Not sure how it works in the UK, but it works well in the US)
