My Winter Ryegrass Season Has Been Cancelled

  • The last three seasons I’ve been experimenting with having a longer rye grass season in our back yard. This is mainly due to the back yard being too hot in the summer, and shifting a focus on having a green lawn to enjoy during the fall, winter, and spring months. Well, a few things happened this season, and I’m not really sure what caused the most loss.
I did overseed at ~ 15lbs/1000sq’ in hopes to have a thicker ryegrass. I don’t know if that was too compact for this type of ryegrass, and lead to issues.
In December, we had a few days in the 11 degrees range that gave us a hard freeze early in the season. That’s when the Bermuda went dormant in our area, and that’s when my back yard was really exposed with either dead ryegrass, dormant Bermuda, or a combination of both.
I’ve had cold spells in the past few years that were even worse than this one, but with less loss. So I’m wondering if this is a brand issue, annual vs. perennial rye, or is it just bad luck?
I did have some recovery, but not enough to continue with the long season. There will be no spring overseed, and I’m moving on to getting ready for a normal Bermuda season. Leave a comment of your opinion!

Thought id through my 2 cent in. I lm in NC and we got that could snap too in December. I have been using whats called Oregon Grown annual ryegrass that i get from tractor supply for the past few years on a couple of acres, and always seed thicker on my front yard that is smaller. Mine did suffer from that cold snap, however i made sure not to mow it before that cold front came through. I actually let it get to a good 6 inches tall and while alot of it in spots looked freezer burned lol, it bonced back nicely in February. I did put some triple 10 fertilizer on it in like January, when its still cold. But i think its the fact i left it longer before that came through. I go all out on my front lawn and can get my annual ryegrass super dark with iron and triple 10 fast release. So maybe that helped too? During our December cold snap our lowest temperature was 8 degrees for a couple of nights. Hope this helps. I havent done perennial ryegrass yet but im considering it for the front yard this year.

Thanks for sharing! I’m only one area and one experience, so your 2 cents really helps others with a way to have success.

Same problem up around Little Elm. Most of the other houses around here it looks the same. I think some of the model homes nearby used fescue instead of rye and it looks like it is recovering. I think it might have been the seed I used since it’s supposed to die off fairly quick in the spring time. 🤷‍♂️

Oh man, well that’s good to know. I know a few friends are having the same issue with Pennington annual. I haven’t heard from anyone with perennial yet. Interesting about the fescue though… may have to look into that if this is how our winters are going to be!
