The History & People of Oceania (Melanesians, Micronesians & Polynesians)

  • Who are the people of Oceania and what is their history? Today we'll be looking at the native people of Oceania, the many islands of the Pacific and where they come from, including the Melanesians, Micronesians and Polynesians as well as the people who came before that have since largely been washed away by subsequent migration from East Asia, that being the indigenous inhabitants of Sundaland; a unique race of people related to both native Oceanians such as Papuans as well as indigenous tribal Adivasi peoples of South Asia. Over time, various waves of migration and colonization has created a very unique demographic situation in most of Oceania with connections to people groups in Asia, Europe and even the Americas. What do you think of indigenous peoples of the former Sundaland and their modern descendants in Southeast Asia and why do you think they have received so little attention from outsiders? Why do you think most people from outside Southeast Asia have no idea they even exist?

Population geneticist here. You really need to update your terminology to current standards in human population genetics. You keep talking about human races, and thoroughly imply in several of your videos (even titles and thumbnails) that human races do exist and that they are biological entities, not social constructs. You come across as deeply racist and the language you use would be rejected in most scientific journals nowadays.

Ugh, this is really disgusting. He does, in fact, cite recent papers in human population genetics, which suggests that he is aware of recent discussions about the non-existence of (biological) human races. He just chooses to keep talking about human races because it aligns with his beliefs.

I loled at 1 second... "The Pacific is quite large". Indeed, 35% of the planet and 17x the size of the USA (including Alaska). So understatement. But it only makes Melanesians, Micronesians & Polynesians even more hardcore in my opinion. No way I'm crossing the Pacific in a outrigger!

As to your question, unfortunately western anthropologists tended to believe in social Darwinism/racist ideologies and so only studied cultures like these with the assumption they would go extinct like the dodo. As a history teacher in the US I can attest that our global history curriculum doesn’t even touch on the Pacific until the age of exploration, and even then Hawaii is barely a mention until WWII.

Hey, im from PNG (coastal) and I think you got it pretty right as far as the definitions used. It's confusing because as you mentioned, there is a lot of overlap, be it ethnically, linguistically, culturally etc.In general terms, most coastal peoples in PNG speak Austronesian rooted languages or have them mixed in with whatever existed in that region.

Great job Masaman! Very good way of making a conscise video about a variety of topics I had previously suggested. I honestly and truly was relieved when you went through all of them and stated the right details for them! Here are a few more ideas for the next one:
    1. Aboriginal Australians (specifically by themselves) + the Palawa Cultural Revival in Tasmania
    2. Sumerians and modern day populations
    3. Canaanites and Neolithic Levantive Populations
    4. *While we obviously don't know a whole lot about many of the extremely ancient cultures going back tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years, it'd be interesting to see a video describing what we do know about the obscure histories and cutures of these populations.
    5. The indigenous cultures of the Phillipine Archipelago.
    6. Expanded look at the cultures of the Eastern India/Bangladesh/Myanmmar area beyond just the Royhingas.
    7. Populations in the world whose genome actually has a few unique biological differences from the rest of humanity (Yaghan tolerance for cold, Bajau spleen enlargement for exteneded underwater diving, Tibetan high altitudes adaption, etc.
    8. What happened to the Normans?
    9. Who are the PEOPLE of the Galapagos Islands? *We often hear about the animals there, but what about the culture of the South American colonists to the islands? Likewise, it'd be wise to look at the Juan Fernandez Islands in the same way as well. So, Insular Chile.
    10. Thought experiment about your take on hypothetical human colonization of the Solar System.
    11. The indigenous peoples of Southern California, the Baja Peninsula, and ultra Northwest Parts of Mexico.
    12. Something interesting with how the island of Svalbard is developing it's own unique population as we speak.
    13. Vepsians, Votians, and peoples of the Karelia area of Russia that borders Finland.
    14. Cultures and ethnicities of micronations.
    15. How South Koreans and North Koreans are starting to diverge culturally and ethnically beyond just nationality.
    16. Ainu (specifically by themselves)
17.Ethnic groups that are starting to be formed as a result of current conflicts in the world, and the potential direction they could go.
    18. Sao Tome and Principe
    19. Haida Gwaii
    20. Métis of Canada
    21. The Scots-Irish of Northern Ireland
    22. Other lesser known peoples of the British Islands
    23. Afrikaners of Southern Africa
    24. Pied-Noires
    25. What if other archaic humans survived until today?
    26. What happened to the Guanches of the Canary Islands?
    27. Charrúa of Uruguay
    28. Impact of Esperanto on the world and the specialized global sub community it created (Neutral Morsenet/Amekijo Proposal)
    29. People of The Seychelles
    30. More "What happened to...?" and "What if...." videos!

It's very well documented that whole series things become hot potatos and situations to be debunked when they find out so called black people where there first or started a culture . That series shows black people were in they America first defined Australisian blood before any other add mixtures the red heads and middle Eastern escape routes following ancestral routes All the way to they so called America's!! Well documented and proven through DNA that there trying to erase.

It’s funny I was hoping for another video about Oceania. About 10% of my DNA is from Guam and I’m always looking to look more into that. I guess I consider myself Euronesian because of the very slight admixture that’s visible in my appearance. West Europe, Southeast Europe, and Guam is where my ethnicity estimates come from

As much as i find the history of my seafaring ancestors the Austronesians both interesting & fascinating. I feel bad knowing they are the reason why NZ's megafauna like the haast eagle & giant moa went extinct : (

Yeah some of them look more typical Australoid while others look more average Negroid and others more Paleo Mongoloid and even a select few appearing to look Neo Mongoloid the latter probably due to some East Asian admixing mostly from The Japanese And Okinawans very few look Caucasoid though yeah.

I wonder at which point did the Polynesians get their Papuan DNA if they're saying that the Lapita skeletons found were mostly unmixed SE Asians. They must've mixed after they found settlements in Samoa and Tonga.
