I don't think I've heard a more twisting of scripture in my life. I did leave the institutional church 10 years ago, in exchange for small bible study for believing Christ followers. True love is calling out sin, homosexuality, adultery etc. I love people and want them to experience freedom in Jesus. This freedom is not calling evil good and good evil. That's what she is doing. God is not concerned about our best life now and our happiness. He is concerned about our holiness and abiding in Him, as He died for you.

I feel for her children who have
to endure her lifestyle which is
      unnatural and perverted

Jen Hatmaker is a funny and engaging speaker but I couldn't help feeling that this talk had an edge to it. In any case, the fruits are about obedience. Bearing fruit isn't about happiness in our day to day lives. The fact that Christians did mean things to people that identify as gay does not mean that gay relationships are okay. I am same sex attracted. I used to believe this stuff. I decided to follow Jesus.

Not sure why a women who has struggled greatly in her relationships and is exceptionally confused herself should be teaching others about God and relationships. I would think healthy people are the best speakers on being healthy. Sure, you can go to a doctor who is being sued for malpractice over and over, but why would you? Also, you seem to have had bad church experience but that does not mean ALL churches are like this. The over generalizing of "church" is weak and lazy.

I actually finished watching even though there is very little scripture used to back up this point of view. I highly recommend the book, Set Adrift by Sean McDowell and John Marriott. If you are in the process of deconstructing your faith, it is perfect for you. Let the totality of scripture be your guide, not your feelings. Feelings always change. God is the same yesterday, today and forever, Amen.

So it is crazy how much of what Jen says could also be my story. Including the fact that it took me way to long to get where I needed to be, and recognizing all the bad fruit I had been force-fed while growing up.
In my case, I had always believed we should treat everyone the same, even if we didn't go as far as to call their "sin" good, and for the most part, my father agreed with me. He even went as far as to say that gay people were welcome in his church. He just hoped that he would be able to show them what the Lord calls sin and that they would be able to leave it behind.
This past year, I sat with my dad talking about a church in our town that recently put out a pledge to never allow an openly gay person to join their congregation as members. I thought it was a huge step backward while my father called it "fighting the good fight." I had already been on a deconstruction journey at that point, and had modified my stances on issues like women pastors, biblical inherency, et al, but my father, it seemed, had hardened all his stances to the Nth degree.
He replied to my saying that we should be welcoming homosexuals into our church with a lengthy, vitriolic rant about how they are all perverts, predators and pedophiles, and how the Bible doesn't just call them sinners, it calls them abominations. I sat there and listened to my dad and it was like listening to a Klansman. At no point did he say anything that would distinguish him from someone like Fred Phelps, Steve Anderson, Greg Locke or this new asshole Dillon Awes. In fact, the only thing he has said, in other conversations, that distinguishes him from men like that is that he believes lgbtq's can be saved, but for some reason he thinks they have to completely give up their "lifestyle" either before or immediately after being saved, or it isn't real. Listening to him rant, and growing more and more wild and seeming to be as crazy as a trailhand at a lynching, was a real "come to Jesus" moment. It was a moment like in a movie where the villain's henchman sees his boss for what he really is and realizes "I'm on the wrong side."
Well, I'm not on the wrong side anymore. I'm following the good fruit now. I'm a proud affirmer, and I, like Jen, wish I could collectively apologize to every gay person out there who has been hurt by any action I've taken or any action taken by the theology I followed most of my life.

It's heartbreaking that Jen has had such a jaded and bitter experience with men, her husband, and growing up in the church, but that's not who Jesus is. Jesus is Holy and He came to make us holy ... He gave it all up for Sinners Like Us. God loves us so much He doesn't want us to stay the way we are. He provided his blood to cleanse us from all sin . He wants to change us from the inside out! But when we choose to be happier in our sin than doing things God's way, we miss out on having that fellowship with God! God created marriage between man and woman... you can't just pick and choose things from the Bible that you want to believe because it seems judgmental. God gets to choose how He designed everything, not us.. He knows the best way it works. God gets to set the rules...He is the Creator. But to say that we are more nicer and compassionate than God is prideful.
Turn to God Embrace his Word and have the most satisfying relationship with your loving Creator than you could ever imagine.
*As a note, it SEEMS Jen had to adjust her beliefs, throw out passages from the Bible or interpret them against truth because her daughter embraced being a part of the LGBT community

@Laurie I did...and unfortunately I don't agree with the way the Scriptures were interpreted. Sounds like we just disagree on this issue. Jesus is with open arms for all of us (Matthew 11:28-29)...BUT we do need to take on His gentle & light yolk...and that is gaining rest for our souls by coming under His leadership and control...submitting to Him and to His words. I don't see anyone being kicked to the curb, but I do see the Word being twisted and parts being kicked to the curb. God wants us to embrace His ways...ie: for starters, the gender He gave us at birth (He didn't make a mistake) and embrace what marriage is..a picture of Christ and the Church through the union of a man and woman only.

    • @cyndawinans8315
      @cyndawinans8315 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

On a personal level, I have acquaintances and a family member who have CHOSEN the homosexual/transgender lifestyle. They would say they believe in God (not the same as a spirit-filled follower of Christ). (I also know a believer who has come out of that lifestyle and is fighting off the temptation in order to live a "holy-sexual" lifestyle. Always a choice no matter which way you slice it. I have NEVER been unkind to any from the LGBTQ community, however, I don't support their lifestyle. You can be kind w/o supporting sin. Kindness and truth need to go hand--in-hand though. Jesus modeled that for us. In fact, truth makes kindness more powerful. The most loving and kind thing you can do for someone is to speak the truth in love. Jesus accepts us as we are, but doesn't want us to STAY the way we are. He says to each of us, "Go, and sin no more." He died to set us free and to make us into His likeness.

Jen is a good connector with her audience and speaks with much emotion and expression. It's hard not to like her. Her apology is heartfelt and expressed well to her audience. Yet when she talks about the tree of totally bad fruit, she becomes so very condescending to people like me.
The question Jen poses about "who decides what is good fruit vs bad fruit?" Is the question of the day. Her answer to this question is, "the decentering the powerful majority from the Good News."
Jen goes on to say that white Angelo Saxon men are the problem. This is a very interesting response by a woman who has grown up in the USA and seems strongly in line with Critical Race Theory.
Jen's heart is looking for "life" where people are flourishing and says, "in other words, where people are flourishing, and valued, and honored, and restored there's Jesus."
I would agree with that. So does Jen not believe that the fullness of who God made us be made in His image as male & female including our gender and sexuality is not also allowed to thrive in that place as well and be restored? Would Jen then address the woman at the well or the woman caught in adultery differently and chided Jesus? Does Jen question why the Father gave His only Son rather than His only daughter? Isn't God being misogynistic?
Her example of "death" does not really support her position. It's not the color of the Pastors skin but the origins of his heart. Power does corrupt and we see that everywhere and is found in every community of people because we are fallen and live by our sinful desires which are why we need to repent and confess that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.
Jen seems to be conflating issues here between the government and the church. This is not helpful as the role of government and the church are distinct. Jen goes on to give more examples of why the White Patriarchy needs to be dismantled. So I went to the Revoice leadership page. I would expect to see a very non-homogenous leadership. I was surprised to see in their leadership including founder, board, and advisory collective of 13 people. Nine men and only 4 women with 11 of them being white and only 2 people of color.
Jen's words, "If the flourishing few all look the same then someone else is paying the tab."
Jen finishes up by asking again, "where is the life?" She answers by saying the gospel is for all and that is truth. This reminds me of a scripture that is always good to take to heart found in Matt 19:16-26. It's worth spending some time sitting with the Lord in these verses. You do not enter the Kingdom of God by attaining wealth or power but by humility and repentance of heart.
