What an extraordinary movie! What an outstanding script and acting! Such a fitting tribute to the world-famous greatest Sanskrit poet Kavikulaguru Kalidasa! This movie is न भूतो न भविष्यति (never was one like this before, and never will be another one like this in the future). Rajkumar's acting at Goddess Kali's vision is beyond this world, it's as though he was really having a vision of the goddess. And his Sanskrit pronunciation is astounding and beyond perfect, especially the initial shlokas from Shyamala Dandakam, which has very very long compound words. That was a time, an era, when they could make such films with so much rich Sanskrit content, and the actors were up to the quality to say the Sanskrit shlokas and dialogue. Following is the Sanskrit content in the movie: During the Swayamvara interview with the princess Vidyadhara, the following are recited: When the king asks whether the shepherd dressed and presented as Kashmir prince (pre-Kalidasa) knows astronomy, the minister answers on his behalf: आकारेणैव चतुराः तर्कयन्ति परेङ्गितम् । गर्भस्थं केतकीपुष्पमारोधेनैव षट्पदाः ॥ (The clever people deduce the thoughts of others through the face, just as bees find out the Ketaki flower buds by the stalk.) When the shepherd dressed and presented as Kashmir prince (pre-Kalidasa) wrongly says "त्रिपीडास्तु" meaning "Let there be three troubles for you" to the king instead of "त्रिपीडापरिहारास्तु" (Let the three troubles be resolved), the king is surprised why he uttered such a inauspicious thing, the minister "explains" on his behalf that this is meant to be a blessing, the "scholar" is very creative in his words: आसने विप्रपीडास्तु भोजने बालपीडनम् । शयने सतिपीडस्तु त्रिपीडास्तु निरन्तरम् ॥ (when you are seated on the throne, may scholars trouble you, when you are having meals may little children trouble you, when you are in bed, may your wife trouble you, thus let there be three troubles for you.) Then, in a comic scene, the shepherd sees a painting of Ravana on the wall and yells loudly, "Raabhana" "Raabhana". Hearing this, the princess and the king are shocked that the so-called scholar doesn't even know how to pronounce a simple word. Again, the minister comes to the rescue and explains the mispronunciation: भकारो कुम्भकर्णे च भकारश्च विभीषणे । तयोर्ज्येष्ठे कुलश्रेष्ठे भकारः किं न विद्यते ॥ (Kumbhakarna has a 'Bha' in the second syllable of his name, Vibhishana also has a 'Bha' in the second syllable of his name. Being older than them and the best of the family, why no 'Bha' in his name?) After Kalidasa's vision of Goddess Kali and his enlightenment, he composed the stotram ShyaamalaadaNDakam. All these poems are taken from the book Bhojaprabandha. However, the first few poems are actually recited by a family of poets consisting of father, mother, son and daughter-in-law in response to a riddle posed to them by Bhoja: क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवति महतां नोपकरणे i.e. The great people accomplish tasks by means of their inner qualities, not by means of external instruments. In the movie, they have used only 2 out of 4 of the original poems. (Father): घटो जन्मस्थानं मृगपरिजनो भूर्जवसनो वने वासः कन्दादिकमशनमेवंविधगुणः । अगस्त्यः पाथोधिं यदकृत कराम्भोजकुहरे क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवति महतां नोपकरणे ॥ (Agastya was born in a pot, was surrounded by wild animals, wearing tree-bark clothes, living in the forest, eating only roots and tubers, but he was able to drink the whole ocean in the palm of his hand.) (Daughter-in-law): धनुः पौष्पं मौर्वी मधुकरमयी चञ्चलदृशां दृशां कोणो बाणः सुहृदपि जडात्मा हिमकरः । स्वयं चैकोऽनङ्गः सकलभुवनं व्याकुलयति क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवति महतां नोपकरणे ॥ (Cupid, or Kamadeva, has a bow made of flowers, the bowstring is a line of bees, his arrows are the side glances of women, his friend is the motionless moon, he himself is alone and without a body, but yet he distresses the entire universe.) Then Kalidasa comes and recites (actually in the book, Kalidasa recites this poem much earlier): विद्वद्राजशिखामणे तुलयितुं धाता त्वदीयं यशः कैलासं च निरीक्ष्य तत्र लघुतां निक्षिप्तवान्पूर्तये । उक्षाणं तदुपर्युमासहचरं तन्मूर्ध्नि गङ्गाजलं तस्याग्रे फणिपुङ्गवं तदुपरि स्फारं सुधादीधितिम् ॥ (O Crown Jewel among the kings of scholars! the creator lord Brahma wanted to weigh your glory, and seeing that the Kailasa mountain was lighter, he added Nandi bull to the scale, then Shiva himself, then added Ganga on Shiva's head, then added Shiva's serpent, and then added the new moon ornament on Shiva. (then the balance became equal)). But the singing of the poems is very good. Then at the end of the movie, when Kalidasa recites the Charama-shloka mistakenly thinking that Bhoja is dead: अद्य धारा निराधारा निरालम्बा सरस्वती । पण्डिताः खण्डिताः सर्वे भोजराजे दिवं गते ॥ Because of this, Bhoja really dies. Seeing this, Kalidasa recites the shloka with changed words: अद्य धारा सदाधारा सदालम्बा सरस्वती । पण्डिताः मण्डिताः सर्वे भोजराजे भुवं गते ॥ These stanzas also occur in the Bhojaprabandha, although the story is different than the movie.

What an extraordinary movie! What an outstanding script and acting! Such a fitting tribute to the world-famous greatest Sanskrit poet Kavikulaguru Kalidasa! This movie is न भूतो न भविष्यति (never was one like this before, and never will be another one like this in the future). Rajkumar's acting at Goddess Kali's vision is beyond this world, it's as though he was really having a vision of the goddess. And his Sanskrit pronunciation is astounding and beyond perfect, especially the initial shlokas from Shyamala Dandakam, which has very very long compound words. That was a time, an era, when they could make such films with so much rich Sanskrit content, and the actors were up to the quality to say the Sanskrit shlokas and dialogue.

During the Swayamvara interview with the princess Vidyadhara, the following are recited:
When the king asks whether the shepherd dressed and presented as Kashmir prince (pre-Kalidasa) knows astronomy, the minister answers on his behalf:
आकारेणैव चतुराः तर्कयन्ति परेङ्गितम् । गर्भस्थं केतकीपुष्पमारोधेनैव षट्पदाः ॥
(The clever people deduce the thoughts of others through the face, just as bees find out the Ketaki flower buds by the stalk.)
When the shepherd dressed and presented as Kashmir prince (pre-Kalidasa) wrongly says "त्रिपीडास्तु" meaning "Let there be three troubles for you" to the king instead of "त्रिपीडापरिहारास्तु" (Let the three troubles be resolved), the king is surprised why he uttered such a inauspicious thing, the minister "explains" on his behalf that this is meant to be a blessing, the "scholar" is very creative in his words:
आसने विप्रपीडास्तु भोजने बालपीडनम् । शयने सतिपीडस्तु त्रिपीडास्तु निरन्तरम् ॥
(when you are seated on the throne, may scholars trouble you, when you are having meals may little children trouble you, when you are in bed, may your wife trouble you, thus let there be three troubles for you.)
Then, in a comic scene, the shepherd sees a painting of Ravana on the wall and yells loudly, "Raabhana" "Raabhana". Hearing this, the princess and the king are shocked that the so-called scholar doesn't even know how to pronounce a simple word. Again, the minister comes to the rescue and explains the mispronunciation:
भकारो कुम्भकर्णे च भकारश्च विभीषणे । तयोर्ज्येष्ठे कुलश्रेष्ठे भकारः किं न विद्यते ॥
(Kumbhakarna has a 'Bha' in the second syllable of his name, Vibhishana also has a 'Bha' in the second syllable of his name. Being older than them and the best of the family, why no 'Bha' in his name?)
After Kalidasa's vision of Goddess Kali and his enlightenment, he composed the stotram ShyaamalaadaNDakam. They have used some extracts from the stotram in the film.

सर्वयन्त्रात्मिके सर्वमन्त्रात्मिके सर्वतन्त्रात्मिके सर्वचक्रात्मिके सर्वशक्त्यात्मिके सर्ववर्णात्मिके सर्वरूपे जगन्मातृके ॥
हे जगन्मातृके पाहि मां पाहि मां पाहि मां पाहि ॥
Then, in the royal court of Raja Bhoja, some poems are recited by poets. All these poems are taken from the book Bhojaprabandha. However, the first few poems are actually recited by a family of poets consisting of father, mother, son and daughter-in-law in response to a riddle posed to them by Bhoja: क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवति महतां नोपकरणे i.e. The great people accomplish tasks by means of their inner qualities, not by means of external instruments.
In the movie, they have used only 2 out of 4 of the original poems.
(Father):
घटो जन्मस्थानं मृगपरिजनो भूर्जवसनो
वने वासः कन्दादिकमशनमेवंविधगुणः ।
अगस्त्यः पाथोधिं यदकृत कराम्भोजकुहरे
क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवति महतां नोपकरणे ॥
(Agastya was born in a pot, was surrounded by wild animals, wearing tree-bark clothes, living in the forest, eating only roots and tubers, but he was able to drink the whole ocean in the palm of his hand.)
(Daughter-in-law):
धनुः पौष्पं मौर्वी मधुकरमयी चञ्चलदृशां
दृशां कोणो बाणः सुहृदपि जडात्मा हिमकरः ।
स्वयं चैकोऽनङ्गः सकलभुवनं व्याकुलयति
क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवति महतां नोपकरणे ॥
(Cupid, or Kamadeva, has a bow made of flowers, the bowstring is a line of bees, his arrows are the side glances of women, his friend is the motionless moon, he himself is alone and without a body, but yet he distresses the entire universe.)
Then Kalidasa comes and recites (actually in the book, Kalidasa recites this poem much earlier):
विद्वद्राजशिखामणे तुलयितुं धाता त्वदीयं यशः
कैलासं च निरीक्ष्य तत्र लघुतां निक्षिप्तवान्पूर्तये ।
उक्षाणं तदुपर्युमासहचरं तन्मूर्ध्नि गङ्गाजलं
तस्याग्रे फणिपुङ्गवं तदुपरि स्फारं सुधादीधितिम् ॥
(O Crown Jewel among the kings of scholars! the creator lord Brahma wanted to weigh your glory, and seeing that the Kailasa mountain was lighter, he added Nandi bull to the scale, then Shiva himself, then added Ganga on Shiva's head, then added Shiva's serpent, and then added the new moon ornament on Shiva. (then the balance became equal)).
But the singing of the poems is very good.
Then at the end of the movie, when Kalidasa recites the Charama-shloka mistakenly thinking that Bhoja is dead:
अद्य धारा निराधारा निरालम्बा सरस्वती । पण्डिताः खण्डिताः सर्वे भोजराजे दिवं गते ॥
Because of this, Bhoja really dies. Seeing this, Kalidasa recites the shloka with changed words:
अद्य धारा सदाधारा सदालम्बा सरस्वती । पण्डिताः मण्डिताः सर्वे भोजराजे भुवं गते ॥
These stanzas also occur in the Bhojaprabandha, although the story is different than the movie.
