- Mrs Flyer and I love to go touring on motorcycles, this time we've decided to go "two up" on our brilliant Honda Goldwing into Europe to explore some of the more scenic areas - we are doing it without a plan, without a guide, just literally "Winging it! I hope you enjoy the series! (Episode 1)

Bring on the bridges! Very much looking forward to seeing this tour unfold, I appreciate that tour series do not always secure massive view numbers but they are thoroughly enjoyed by those of us that watch every minute!
Which is why I will keep making them Paul! It’s what biking is all about as far as I’m concerned!
hear hear!
Another great video, so glad you're back on tour as I love these vids 👍🏻 and looking forward to the next installment .
Delighted to hear that - lots more to come!
Swing a cat: flogging with the ‘cat o’ nine tails’ whip on board with the British Navy
Yes so I’m told - fascinating where these sayings come from isn’t it…
Absolutely the best motorcycle reviewer on the net, always great content, and that wing what a glorious machine.
You are too kind sir! And yes, the Wing is a magnificent bit of kit for touring on - really gelled with it on this trip….
Looking forward to this!! 10 weeks of TMF and Mrs Flyer 😁
I loved the Japan tour where Mrs F just cracked up over a meal...it was gold!
So glad to hear that!
We rode one last Saturday, absolutely incredible machine! Going to get one I think 🤔
Yes you should - no better touring machine in my opinion, I love mine, superb bit of kit.
Yes! Another tour from Mr & Mrs F. Always enjoy watching your tours and fun banter.
Delighted to hear that Nigel!
On a recent bike trip to visit a friend living near Nîmes, I was told the trees lining the roads are mostly plane trees which were planted under instruction from Napoleon. They were situated to offer shade to his marching troops in hot weather.
Yes I heard the same.....
Great first episode, I'm really looking forward to the whole series, thanks Mr & Mrs Flyer👍
Excellent a flyer tour. These are always good. Reminds me of places I have been and gives me ideas for new tours.
Great to hear Peter!
Thank you for sharing your tour with us your approach to touring is something I should like to do; whenever I ride in France I am always going somewhere and do so as quickly as possible. I look forward to your next esesode.
I love watching your tours and seeing all these places I've never been to and hearing your " I love a bridge me" comments. Thanks for the efforts and your beautiful photography.
My pleasure Ian, it's because of comments like that we keep doing them....
A great start to the series 👍 You are a "Pontist" a lover of bridges 😅
Guilty!
This I like! Mr and mrs Flyer on a new tour. Liking that you take us true what you need og how you plan the tour. Reminds me like I do. Making a route on a map and then transferring it over to either my phone og the gps. Keep the episodes coming! Best regards from Norway.
Thanks GreyBeard and will do - I’m still editing the series and will be for the next few weeks…!
Your mention of roundabouts reminded me of when me and my wife were driving through Fance. One day she saw a road sign, and said to me "oh look, dangerous supermarket coming up" .....😅😅😅
Great to see a new tour. Btw room to swing a cat is Royal Navy parlance it refers to a cat o' nine tails used to flog sailors.
So I’m told - fascinating isn’t it…
Thank you i have learnt my new thing for today take care
So looking forward to the rest of this tour, the best things in my opinion on this channel are the tours 👍
I'm glad you like 'em Mark!
What a lovely start to your tour just so relaxed, by the way the most common trees for tree lined avenues and and villages in France is the Linden / Lime tree. Thank you.
Thank you for that - we googled it later in the tour, the ones I was talking about are plane trees.....
I was in the same area on my KTM1290 in September 😊 Looking forward to this series ❤
Nice one thanks Mate, I do enjoy travelling with you guys because I don't think I will ever get to do it 👍
Glad you find them of interest - thanks for watching!
What a lovely country France is. The Goldwing has got to be one of the best bikes to do it on too, and we love the sound of that engine purring 👌🏼
Im rather partial to a couple of apples every now and then; im working my way up to melons 😉
Melons can be over-rated (counter intuitively) - apples are perfect in my (considerable) experience….snd yes that big flat six sounds great doesn’t it, really comfy too - the best touring bike two up by far imo.
The trees in Carpentras are called "Platane" (Platanus) and are particularly used in mainland city streets because they're resistant to pollution; They shed their bark in patches, which creates the pattern on the trunks. You can find them in the south but in Belgium we also used to have them. Looks like a great trip and exactly what the Wing is made for; Winging it!
Thanks for that - our research suggested they were called “plane” trees???
@@TheMissendenFlyer Indeed, you find them on British city streets too, quite common in London.
I visited Chamonix, Lake Maggiore & The Verdon Gorges in September so will watch this series with interest. My tour was unplanned as well, deciding to where to stay on the day. I stopped for lunch, thought about where I wanted to end up that day and booked the hotel while having my lunch.
That's pretty much what we did - with the odd weather in Sptember (plus my frozen shoulder) we had to keep things completely flexible....
Great start to my weekend, thanks Andy👍
Very welcome!
Fantastic, what a great start to my weekend, a great accompaniment to breakfast! 👏😀👍 Ten episodes yippee 👍🤣👏
Really pleased you’re looking forward to them! Dont actually know how many episodes yet as I’m still editing them (mammoth task!)…
@@TheMissendenFlyer Mighty impressed with how relaxed the wing appears to be, at one time you were going through a town at what appeared to be just over 20mph and the wing selects ‘4th’ gear at hardly any revs! I hope you keep a note on the fuel economy for the trip, would be very interesting for us nerds! 😀👍
Love the start of the tour and stunning views totally agree about the olives !!! Looking forward to the next one Andy
Glad it’s not just me!
Looks out at sheeting rain. Sigh. You're killing me! Keep up the great work. It's fueling my daydreams for the day.
Glad to hear that! (Not the rain, the day dreams)
I totally agree with you about maps, part of the fun of a trip is studying a map.
I was an HGV driver for most of my life, some of it in Europe, and have never owned or used a satnav.
I'm defo not anti satnav, infact I wouldn't do a tour without one - I just don't do all that route planning gubbins (I know some people love that) on one....for me on this trip, flexibility was the key!
Looking forward to your holiday, was very interesting in the road tag as I know from experience of paying for tickets in the past is a proper pain, great idea thanks for sharing.
My pleasure Tony, and yes the TAG worked a treat, really recommend it if you go to France multiple times a year as we do....
Your editing skills are brilliant. Must take a lot of time. But it is appreciated, so easy and enjoyable to watch. Take care
Thats very kind of you to say - and yes it takes longer than the actual tour (which I am still editing having spent all of last week doing so over some very long days!)
Thanks for posting, I'm inspired to have a little tour on my own down there next year. 👍👍.
You should! It’s brilliant - and this tour gets MUCH better yet….
Jag1970 beat me to it.
We love contributing to your knowledge base Andy 😀
I appreciate the feedback - every day's a school day!
Loved the start of the tour, looking forward to the next 10 weeks of adventure. Also thanks for the little planning insights.
Our pleasure! I don’t know that it will be another 10 episodes (that was a guess)…..I’m still editing the series and reckon it will be around ten episodes in all..
@@TheMissendenFlyer 8 or 10, it’s always a pleasure travelling with you and Carol where ever you go.
Andy. Love the channel. Couple of questions if I may? You wobbling on for the channel is clearly important for the viewers, does Mrs Flyer have to listen to you through the headset the entire time?
Which episode of the tour will you be pillion?
Of course she doesn’t (though she does) - I’m pillion in the final episode…
Andy, I think the trees with “patchy” bark are plane trees. They clean the air and shed bark as they grow. Napoleon ordered some roads be lined with trees to protect his soldiers as they marched.
Yes you are right - later in the series I Google it!
Bonjour! Very enjoyable- great to see mr and mrs flyer taking us thru France. Did a big trip from Dublin to Greece on an Africa Twin. Europe is fantastic to visit and also to fly in and hire too. Really looking forward to each trip. Swinging a 🐈 scene was hilarious 🤣 👊🙏
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching!
I'm sure somebody else will also mention, but swinging a cat refers to swinging a cat-o-nine-tails (a whip) on board a ship below decks. Happy touring Kids!
Yes several have mentioned it - fascinating stuff....
Looking forward to this tour series, brilliant choice of countries to travel thru 👍....... I don't like olives either 😅
Glad it’s not just me David, awful bloody things!
I was looking forward to this and wasn’t disappointed. I didn’t know about the Toll payment device but will definitely be getting one for next summer!
Yes they are really handy on a bike in particular....
In Belgium, (almost) all bikers greet, mostly with a V-signal. Even cops on bikes greet (and turn a blind eye for small traffic violations by fellow bikers)
Got my Saturday morning sorted for the next few weeks 😊 Be great in your hotel reviews if you covered Bike parking and security. Mont Ventoux is fab, I cycled up it a few years ago but it wasn’t windy. And I put my tag in an armband on my left arm, works a treat.
Me too (Ventoux) ...,any happy yet painful memories
Yes the tags make life so much easier don’t they - we do cover bike parking (when we remember) in future hotel tours….thanks for watching once again!
@@guyrose2239 I’m on the larger size compared to a competitive cyclist which makes the ascent a bit more interesting 😂 But gravity is your friend on the downhill which was equally awesome on the pedal bike. Personally, I found Alpe d’huez an even harder a log for me though!
Great to see you on tour TMF love your tour series videos. One thing in the preparation you may have missed was travel insurance, I’m sure you’ll have done this but not everyone touring in Europe understand that ordinary travel insurance does not cover you and you need to pay a bit extra to get proper cover.
Yes I should have mentioned that - thanks for putting me right…
I love a winging it bike trip, just follow your nose with no schedule and targets to hit everyday 😁👍🏼
Yes for me I think this is the best way to tour - no plan, just a bike and some time to fill, brilliant!! Does have some disadvantages but i love the flexibility….
@@TheMissendenFlyer agreed it’s not perfect, I’m going to Portugal next year with friends and I’m going to do a mix of random riding then follow mates who love planing 👍🏼
Lovely start to my day… thanks team MF! I love these tours and have done a lot in these regions so I can’t wait to see your adventures… 🙏🏻⭐️👍🏻
Our pleasure!
From an experienced France traveler some great tips Andy. My motorway tag maybe cheaper. I used leonardo who only charge 2euros a month when you use the tag so 99% of the time it doesn’t cost you anything.
Bargain by the sounds of it!
Thanks for the travel tips,I am building a TH-cam channel and I found that really useful, I also just purchased an omaze 3 camera and all the gubbins to go with it so I'm looking forward to following in some footsteps of other great content providers like yourself. Never too old to start 57 and still love riding.
Too right - best of luck with your channel!
Superb route, we live just south of the gorge, and we do those routes frequently, and I’d recommend it to anyone. Really looking forward to hear what you think of it over the next few weeks 👍👍
Stay tuned!
Roll on next Saturday 😊
Aw thank you - much appreciated!
Hurray! “We” are going on a trip again!🎉 🍉 🍉
Morning Andy, Nice I enjoy some of your tours. Interesting planning you are much better organised than me.
I always associate France with onions, Wee men in caps on bicycles loaded with strings of onions.
I’m guessing John you’ve not been to France that much this century 😂
You’ve hooked me in the first minute TMF
Delighted to hear that Jonny!
You Sir, are a very lucky man. Wish my wife would jump on the back with me. The Goldwing looks like a proper steed for that sort of work. Well done. 😎😎
I am indeed - not only does she jump on the back she rides a Kawasaki Z650RS herself!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Good on her!!👍
Same for me...its all solo these days...my missus not interested....I hit cornwall once in a while on a single jolly but its not the same!
Love your tours Andy! I may have missed it but I think that you also have to have a breathalyser kit in Europe. Apologies if you mentioned it!
I don't think you do any more.....certainly you used to in a car....
Thanks for bringing us along, I like the way to plan the tour, very refreshing. I thought you had a dedicated Sat nav fitted but that may have been your last wing? One thing Nathan Millward recently vlogged about accident recovery where he’d met some people one of which had damaged his crankcase and as it was not a break down but an accident his insurance company would not cover him …. I wonder if the Honda scheme is the same ?
Good question - I don’t actually know that one….will have to check…. And yes I temporarily had a dedicated satnav but actually now I have CarPlay working its way better and more convenient (and neat)…
Very jealous!
Don’t be - just go yourself if you have the opportunity!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Mrs Lbloggs wouldn't do that trip 2 up even when we had a sport tourer (Norge)...........I.would go at the drop of a hat even on my current T120, two up....
I’ve done a similar thing in the U.K., didn’t book anything in advance, just found B&Bs when I got where I ended up that day. One of the best holidays I’ve had.
No review of the first hotels breakfast Andy?
Sorry I forgot! ….and yes I enjoyed the unplanned nature of this one….
"Swing a Cat" refers to a Caterpillar bulldozer. To swing one round, you can make one track drive forwards while the opposite one drives backwards. You can swing it round on the spot, or on a tanner, if you know what a tanner was😂
Ha ha! Great alternative explanation 😅😅
Yes I prefer this modern version!
Great video. I had a bit of a road trip a couple of years ago to Beaune and Lyon, but did it in a lovely old Jag that I had. I'd love to do it on a bike, but my XSR900 probably isn't the bike for it (awful on a motorway!).
Look forward to the next instalment.
Funnily enough I bought an F-Type Jag (my 4 wheel toy) a couple of years back to do exactly this type of trip - still yet you leave the country with it!
Great 1st episode of the Winging it tour series. Can't wait to take my DCT Tour to France and beyond next year. You didn't mention how you crossed the channel, ferry or train, and how was the crossing?
I'm looking forward to the next episode already.
Yes you should - perfect bike for it. We used the tunnel, quick and easy (but not very interesting to film!)….
You went Greek salad - which has feta cheese, which is made from sheep or goat's milk, isn't it? Lol. That first village on the Rhone looked spectacular, Andy.
Indeed it is - love a bit of feta on my GS…
As mentioned it's a cat o nine tails reference, but on ships like Victory the person being flogged would be chained up below decks but because that level had a very low deck above it you couldn't get a good swing with the Cat! Also the cat had to made by the person getting whipped! And it would need to have glass or other sharp material sewed in! The word Tow Rag n dirty tow tag come from the same era. The tow tag was a rag on that was dragged in the sea up on the heads, for wiping ya bum after a poo, if it wasn't lowered enough you would go to wipe your arse and it would still have poo on it! This would then be the fault of the young lads who are meant to keep that area clean, the sailor would shout out Dirty tow tag at him while giving him a good hard clip around the ear! There are tons Naval slang terms now used in Civvy street
Thank god I never joined the navy!
Great start to the tour series. Looking forward to watching the rest of the videos.
Is Mrs Flyer insured for any of the bikes you tour with?
If so you could take in more of the scenery on the back of the Gold wing whilst Mrs F does the business on the front.
Sadly not - plus I think at her experience level currently the GoldWing with me on the back may be a step too far....
Not a moggy - the cat-o'-nine-tails (whip), enough room to flog someone ;-(
Aha! The mystery is solved!!! Fascinating where these sayings come from isn’t it….thank you for that!
Great vid as always Mr F. But it would be nice to know where you crossed the channel?
Apologies Folkestone to Calais on the train - thought I mentioned it (great service e but makes for boring video!)
I was in france in September, would of loved to of seen you guys, shame you didnt do Ventoux its a great road, especially at weekend when its full of cyclists even grannies riding up on shoppers.
Wish id known about the peage devices, also some petrol stations will take 200 euro out of your account before you get the fuel if you use a debit card so take a credit card with you.
Yes good point - I should have mentioned that!
Listening to this while on my morning walk... had to stop and look at 12:03... thought you said 'nice bit of lingerie'! 😅
Easy!!!
Swinging a cat, relates to the cat o’ nine tails.
So I'm told....fascinating
goats cheese and olives food of the Gods!!!!!!!!
As an atheist they're welcome to them.....
I’d not be buying post-it notes but great bike and footage thanks mate
What have you got against post-it notes out of interest??
Great bikes . Just back from a week in France on my non Tour DCT . Out of interest, do you know about re-syncing the DCT ? Takes 5 minutes and transforms the gear changes , as they go slightly out of sync over time
Yes I do and have done it once since I’ve had the bike (though to be honest I didn’t notice any difference….not that mine is “off” in any way)….
@@TheMissendenFlyer I did mine after 5000 miles and the gear changes are certainly smoother .
you see like a lovely couple... CHEERS Tony Simpson died on that Mount Vent Toux btw
That’s kind of you to say!! I hate to admit it but who is Tony Simpson?
I think it has to be a UK sticker, not GB.
Yes my bad if I said that….
Love the vid Mr & Mrs F, can't wait for the next instalment! Quick Q...how does the mighty wing handle in the windy conditions is it a bit heavy going?
Actually it was fine - better than the windy conditions we experienced at the end of our Alaska trip on the GS infact - not sure if it's the lower height and higher weight that makes it more stable?
@TheMissendenFlyer thanks Andy, keep up the great work! Btw the Alaska tour was your best....loved every minute! 😊
Apart from the Danube, all the longest rivers are in Russia (European)
Thank you for that....
Lucky man , beautiful place. Is the GW now favorite over the GS when it comes to Touring?
Oh yes, 2 up for sure - nothing comes close....in fact even one up I think I'd rather be on the wing if not venturing off-road.
Hi Andy, looks like a great trip so far. How come you're not wearing your hi viz, are they not compulsory to be worn all the time?
No - just when broken down is my understanding (although we did wear them on the long schlep back when it was raining with low viz - as we had them with us)
Have you been to lyon ? I was there last month, absolutely lovely city.
Many times (bar car, aeroplane and motorcycle!)…
no room to swing a cat refers to the cat o nine tails a whip to punish sailors in the royal navy in the days of sail it had nine knotted strands on it and tore the flesh on there back to pieces
Thank you for that -fascinating where these sayings come from isn’t it….
Amazing in parts of Europe, you're asked at the border how clean your vehicle is.
Stop and make a video from Rue Du Château, of Château Des Singes (Château de Cahaignes) on your way back to the channel. Maybe it's owner will be in, and let you tour it.....
Strange question! I would think a quick glance would reveal that one!
@@TheMissendenFlyerI mean, carbon emissions. (Your sticker)
Recently, I revisited a place I worked at 30 years ago. I was surprised to see cars parked both forwards and backwards. In the old days there were strict rules about not reversing into the spaces because of the filthy gunge that splattered all down the walls and needed regular professional cleaning. Apparently this rule is no longer necessary so seems like the regulations are working.
Correct me if i'm wrong but I was under the impression that you are not meant to use toll tags when on a bike, something to do with safety.
First I've heard of it - there are specific instructions of how to use one on a motorcycle on the TAG website as well as TAG/toll lanes marked for motorcycles.....
loving the new series Mr & Mrs Flyer.
Andy what’s the bracket on your left hand mirror and i apologise if i’ve missed it, but how are you connecting to apple play, i hate having my phone in the trunk.
The bracket is for my 360 camera - and yes the phone is in the “trunk”! Delighted you enjoyed the first episode!
@@TheMissendenFlyer cheers for the reply Andy, how does the bracket attach, i know max Macalister does one that attaches using the mirror mounting bolts, but i need to import it from USA, just wonder is that a UK purchase
Did the toll tag work all the time, any payment issues once home?
Yes it was brilliant and made life so much easier - you can even track spend as you go. No issues at all….
Correct me if I'm wrong folks but don't we need UK stickers these days not GB stickers?
Yes you’re right - thought I’d corrected myself, my bad if not!!
GB is no longer valid. UK only since 21/22
Next time I go to France I'll have both
Yes you're correct - I thought I corrected myself in the video but it was a slip o the tongue....my bad
This is going to be a great trip. One thing to remember when going to Europe: annoyingly 'GB' sticker now needs to be 'UK' sticker :) or as you say your UK flag number plate (at least outside Spain)
Yes my error.....
