I enjoyed this video a lot. I find it crazy and incredible how that area south of Miami has exploded in population after being wiped out by Andrew in 1992.
I went from Tamarac, just west of Ft. Lauderdale to Key West and back in one day with my dad in one day during Christmas Week '76 so you have wetted my appetite for the season finale. The section you videotaped for today is so much more built up.
Another fine video! I have not been to Miami since 2003 and have never been south of Homestead, so this will be a very interesting series for me. Thanks!
Good memories of just a few years ago when I drove this road to US 1 and all the way down to Key West and had to pay tolls with cash, it's all electronic now.
Sorry about the delay in watching- was occupied and all during the holiday weekend- but finally checked it out! WOW- Miami's freeways are impressive- and that stack- wow! Also like the palm-tree lines in the center- always did like that- from the ones I experienced in California in 1990! Very different than the highways I know in Ohio! Very nice ride! Sorry about the delay in watching- but glad to finally check it out!
I went to Key West during my vacation in Sarasota only a couple weeks ago, I went on your exact route going south, and I must say. Miami is such a beautiful area (full of construction at that) and driving down to Key West was very interesting. Going back up north, I went on Card Sound Road and payed the toll with cash, little did I know that it would be replaced with an AET toll gantry in a month. I'll miss the old cash booth a little bit just because it was a remnant of the old cash toll past of Florida's tollways. I'm not even sure why the old toll booth needed to be replaced because I couldn't imagine that road being congested outside of a hurricane evacuation. Downtown Miami is a beautiful area, especially the Port of Miami tunnel. One of the more interesting things in the Miami road system is FL 112, which is a short toll road intended for access to the Miami Airport. But when I was going back north from Miami, and the Dolphin Expressway was heavily congested, I took this road to escape the congestion. The road gets VERY interesting when it goes past where google maps says it ends, because the road switches to opposite driving directions, where the traffic is on the left side of the road, and at the same time there is an at-grade rail crossing in the middle of an opposite traffic flow tollway! (very pesky when buses have to stop at this crossing). After that, I went up US 41 up the Everglades, where I saw the world's smallest post office in Ochopee, Florida. When I got out of the car to take pictures, I was attacked by nats. The Everglades Nats make the Georgia Nats seem moderate. Overall, Miami and Key West are very interesting and beautiful areas.
I love the way Florida have a lot of controlled access highways. Even in the metropolitan area of Miami have more of them than any other city in Florida. Most of the controlled access highways are state routes as I see. Some of those highways are tolled and sometimes there are express and HOV lanes in the routes.
Awesome video, Jim! I make road videos myself and I live in West Virginia. In about 2 weeks, I will be filming the entire 88 miles of the West Virginia Turnpike! I also hope you had a Happy Fourth!
You should try and film some videos in Orlando sometime. Tons of roads to record; you could also film current I-4 to I-4 after the Ultimate project is completed.
They do end rather abruptly, agreed and there are few more like that in the area, yes I thought they were pretty cool as well, the Shula was a nice surprise.
Millions of tourists drive these highways every year and it costs money to repair them. The residents of Florida would have to shoulder those expenses alone, this is a way for tourists to contribute their share. We have a Sunpass which saves a substantial amount of money compared to being billed by your license plate at each checkpoint. I think it was only $5.00 and we got a $5.00 credit for free for signing up. Just a thought to save some money next time :)
Becuase we have millions of tourists using our roads every year and it costs money to repair them. We are also in the middle of massive construction projects like the I-4 ultimate project and the renovations on SR 528,417,416, Florida Turnpike and more.
Great video! This is awesome and I remember that road from when I went to Miami for a mission trip in homestead; we used that road to get from the airport to homestead and vise versa.
Thank you, the Keys video is 2+ hours of raw footage (about 100 miles), I can't work with that in the middle of making all the regular videos so once everything is done I'll see what I can do with it and not feel rushed (which will make for a better video).
The last time I drove on this stretch of road, that awesone stacked interchange was a rat trap and much of the three, four and five-lane roadway (each way) of the FL Tpk Extension was a LOT narrower -- only two lanes each way!
Very nice video, glad you went with Tom Petty!! I had that Don Shula card, along with some of the "wife" cards that came with that set. Can't wait for next week!!!
OK, who had worse lane discipline, the drivers here, or on I-15 between Las Vegas and San Bernardino? Also, I believe that was the southernmost section of interstate grade highway in the continental United States. I'm looking forward to seeing your trip to Key West.
Freeway Jim...used to live in Miami...I worked at the MIA airport and to get home used to take the 836 west to 826 south to us1...us1 south to sw137th avenue east to sw312th west...into Homestead.
João Marques Technically you are supposed to pass only on the left but many people tend to sit in the left lane while going slower than everyone else, therefore making people pass on the right. This is done more in certain areas, Florida being one of them.
Freewayjim I liked the music and the video. Have a Blessed Day Freewayjim and also I've never seen Key West before... That's like the furthest to the Pacific Ocean
Thanks Justin, no Key West has nothing to do with the Pacific Ocean, it is the Southernmost point in the US and is where the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico meet.
Heading back to Key West right after Labor Day. 4th time in the past 5 years. Love the drive thru the Keys, particularly the Seven Mile Bridge from where one can see (during the day) the parts of the original (from early 20th century) bridge still standing.
Jim, following you for 5 or 6 years now.. or something like that.. I must say I'm a big fan of freewayjim and love your productions. Please hit me up one day in Snellville/Lawrencevillr area, would love to say hi.
I’ve lived and Florida for a few years now and the honest truth is that police here are not big on speeding. I mean, if everyone is doing 90 in a 70 zone, what are they supposed to do? There have been several times where I’ve passed a cop doing at least 25 over the limit and they just sat there😁😁😁
Freewayjim Well sorry for the misconception Jim. My family and I will be going on a vacation down to southern Florida. We'll be lodging in Fort Lauderdale, and we'll venture down to Miami and Key West. I am super excited and cannot wait! Let me tell you!
Thing I like about Fl is that everyone drives different as everyone from all over the country who visits or moved to Florida so there’s no right way of driving. I definitely will say Florida can be a challenge to drive at frist
nathan cook My understanding is that they tend to avoid summertime road work in southern Florida because of the excessive heat and humidity, plus the increased risk of thunderstorms.
Why do all the freeways and roads that are traveled alot by tourists have very non latin names but most of the other streets that are used mainly by locals named after mostly hispanic names? Ever notice that about Miami??? Weird lmao.
Welcome to Miami & South Florida! Thank you for documenting and making what we see every day look as amazing as it actually is. Excellent work!
Thank you very much Harry!
I love southern Florida! And that is a nice new stack interchange! Thanks for the ride as always.
I enjoyed this video a lot. I find it crazy and incredible how that area south of Miami has exploded in population after being wiped out by Andrew in 1992.
Thank you, yes it seems that way, NASCAR track and all.
Such a great video and even better playlist. I was missing home and this video made me reminisce so good! Cheers from DFW!
Thank you very much!
Excellent looking video and a very fun ride. Florida looked great. TP is always the best to listen to. Thanx for posting this.
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks!
Great video! I love the unique highway sign structures on the Don Shula Expressway. They definitely add some style to the freeway!
Thanks, and I agree!
I went from Tamarac, just west of Ft. Lauderdale to Key West and back in one day with my dad in one day during Christmas Week '76 so you have wetted my appetite for the season finale. The section you videotaped for today is so much more built up.
Thanks, I'm sure much has changed along your route in 40 years.
Great video as always! That new interchange looks awesome! It was in the beginning stages of construction when I last was in Miami three years ago
Thank you! wait till you see it at night in Video 17-10.
Another fine video! I have not been to Miami since 2003 and have never been south of Homestead, so this will be a very interesting series for me. Thanks!
Thank you for watching!

No prob, you watch when you can, we all have lives. Glad you enjoyed and the best is yet to come.

An awful lot has changed since I left south Florida in 2014. Just fascinating.
Excellent video as always Jim. Thanks for posting.
Thank you!
Great video and song choices as usual. Love them!!!
Thank you and as always thank you for watching!

Great video as always. I hope to be headed to Miami next month. I need a vacation. Looks like you had a great time.
Thank you, it was short but we enjoyed it!
Thanks Jim for another great ride with great music. Have a safe and happy Independence Day.
Thanks and you too!
You should try and film some videos in Orlando sometime. Tons of roads to record; you could also film current I-4 to I-4 after the Ultimate project is completed.
I love this video so much
Thank you! glad to hear it.
The express lanes are coming along nicely there. I believe they are the first variable priced toll lanes within a general toll road.
I think you are right on that, they are building them on I-75 too as you'll see in the next video.
fantastic places to drive in , and very nice ride , thanks a lot .
Thank you, yes it is a fun place to drive.
Nice ride, but I hate that the expressways end and so abruptly. But I love those gantries on the Shula. Very creative.
They do end rather abruptly, agreed and there are few more like that in the area, yes I thought they were pretty cool as well, the Shula was a nice surprise.
Wow, apparently people in Florida don't know how to drive by the right. So many left lane hoggers.
Why are there so many tolls in Florida? I went to Orlando a couple years ago and the tolls were just crazy.
Roads cost money.
Cambing Highways Could be worse. NJ not only has tolls but now have the 7th highest gas tax thanks to a .23 increase a few months ago.
There is no state taxes in Florida
Millions of tourists drive these highways every year and it costs money to repair them. Nooooo! lol I was so hype for the Florida keys video then I get to the end of your video :( at least I have something to look forward to now!
Thank you, the Keys video is 2+ hours of raw footage (about 100 miles), I can't work with that in the middle of making all the regular videos so once everything is done I'll see what I can do with it and not feel rushed (which will make for a better video).
Happy 4th to you, Jim! Pretty freeways. I'd love to go down to Miami one day, but not sure exactly when.
Thanks, Happy 4th to you too.
Awesome video! Feels weird seeing roads I drive on almost daily featured on one of your videos.
Awesome video & happy 4th of July FWJ!!!
Thanks and you too!
+Freewayjim are you by any chance planing on revising Michigan and doing some videos there?
Very nice drive through Miami. I was wondering when you were going to take a trip to my city. :-) Also, I definitely need to catch up on your vids!
The last time I drove on this stretch of road, that awesone stacked interchange was a rat trap and much of the three, four and five-lane roadway (each way) of the FL Tpk Extension was a LOT narrower -- only two lanes each way!
That Interchange was completed in 2016 and it is really nice.
Now if FLDOT could do something about the Golden Glades Interchange, where seven highways come together.
Very nice video, glad you went with Tom Petty!! I had that Don Shula card, along with some of the "wife" cards that came with that set. Can't wait for next week!!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Can you do videos of the highways on Long Island and NYC parkways?
Not something I'm interested in doing, plus I live in Atlanta.
Freewayjim its all good. There is just no channel that has videos of the parkways that are as good quality as yours
OK, who had worse lane discipline, the drivers here, or on I-15 between Las Vegas and San Bernardino? Also, I believe that was the southernmost section of interstate grade highway in the continental United States. I'm looking forward to seeing your trip to Key West.
You'll see some really bad lane discipline on I-95 North coming in Video 17-11 in a few weeks but I-15 was still worse, lol.
Freeway Jim...used to live in Miami...I worked at the MIA airport and to get home used to take the 836 west to 826 south to us1...us1 south to sw137th avenue east to sw312th west...into Homestead.
Sounds like a nice commute.
Nicely done as always!
Thank you very much!
What's up with the Key West video being blocked?
Probably a copyright policy on one of the songs changed for no good reason, nothing I can do about it, unfortunately.
When did u buy this new truck
Cool City
It's really nice to see the lack of billboards (until the end of the route). Most U.S. cities I've been to have freeways lined with billboards.
Another great one!
Thank you!
ohhhhhhh yeah
Is it legal in the US to pass by the right, or does it depend on the state you’re driving?
João Marques Technically you are supposed to pass only on the left but many people tend to sit in the left lane while going slower than everyone else, therefore making people pass on the right. This is done more in certain areas, Florida being one of them.
Also Happy 4th of July Freewayjim
Happy 4th to You!
Another good one JIm!
Thank you!
Crazy to believe the Palmetto now has Express Lanes
Miami looks totally different from when I was there last, back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. I really need to head east one of these summers!
I had not been there since 1990 and it was pretty different for me as well and I must admit I truly enjoyed my time there.
Freewayjim I liked the music and the video. Have a Blessed Day Freewayjim and also I've never seen Key West before... That's like the furthest to the Pacific Ocean

Kaydrah Communications Wanderlust I
Jim you should do a video of I-95 in the Miami area
I did, coming in a few weeks.
When do you anticipate the season finale being released?
I don't know, maybe late August, Early September, I don't have as much material to work with as I have in past years.
Freewayjim Nice. I'll be looking forward to it. No hurry, I know you like saving the best for last.
What's up with the dark clouds
Florida weather.
You went down to Miami?! AWESOME!
Yes, be sure to check out 17-09, 17-10 and 17-11.
Try doing one in north carolina
I have many from NC, search the collection.
Jim, following you for 5 or 6 years now.. or something like that.. I must say I'm a big fan of freewayjim and love your productions. Please hit me up one day in Snellville/Lawrencevillr area, would love to say hi.
Thank you for watching all those years!
Hello FWJ, can you do some normali videos of cities.Like one YT channel J Utah.Happy 4th july.
Greathings from Montenegro(Europe)
Thanks...no, that's not something I'd be interested in doing...I really don't travel all that much.
will you go to Daytona Beach after miami
No, the next video after Miami is from a rainy Jacksonville but I think it'll turn out OK, just started working on that one.
Freewayjim what was that construction project nearing the end of the video
I don't really know, was too busy looking at everything else. I'm sure you could look it up if you are that interested in it.
This goes to the brass at Clear Channel, err I mean IHeart (as they have any) media.
Nice vid
Thanks!
fantastic!!!!
Thank you!
Awesome drive
Thanks
Speed is strictly enforced in the keys and limits change frequently. Have fun!
Yeah, I saw a lot of police along the way, no incidents.
Boy, that one blue car was in a hurry at 4:40 ish. Makes me wonder if you ever captured people getting nailed by state troopers or something
I don't recall ever getting footage like that.
I’ve lived and Florida for a few years now and the honest truth is that police here are not big on speeding. I mean, if everyone is doing 90 in a 70 zone, what are they supposed to do? There have been several times where I’ve passed a cop doing at least 25 over the limit and they just sat there😁😁😁
Man you're everywhere! Your car must have a TON of miles on it
Not really, I only take one major trip a year and this is it for this year.
Freewayjim Well sorry for the misconception Jim. My family and I will be going on a vacation down to southern Florida. We'll be lodging in Fort Lauderdale, and we'll venture down to Miami and Key West. I am super excited and cannot wait! Let me tell you!
A lot of people have that misconception, lol. South Florida and the Keys are neat, I'm sure you will have a great time!
I enjoyed this ride - it had to have been a bit of a downer when the freeways ended and you were dumped onto stop and go Route 1.
Thanks, yes and now, yes because the freeway ended but no because it was fresh territory for me heading south.
Freewayjim I thought that was cool, ending on the local US 1. Have you done any videos on I-70 in Breezewood, PA?
Thanks, no I have not filmed Breezewood, only been through there on I-70 once.
I love Miami highway. Lots of land for open room.
Awww Man! I wanted to see the i-75 and i-595 interchange😟.
Got rained out trying to get that.
Another reason why Arizona > Flordia!
Mountains were enough for me :)
Thing I like about Fl is that everyone drives different as everyone from all over the country who visits or moved to Florida so there’s no right way of driving. I definitely will say Florida can be a challenge to drive at frist
I always thought lucky sounded a lot like Tom Petty
Best freeways in the US in my opinion 1. Houston 2. Miami 3. Dallas Ft Worth
I Like This Video!
I love the 874 when I drive to get to zoo Miami 1:55
FreewayJim Looks like you got a new car and it looks nice 😎😎😎😎😎😎
Yes I did and thank you!
You must be going everywhere in Florida
Not really, did not go to Orlando or Pensacola :)
2 videos of yours got blocked, 🪦
Guess there was a lot of Road work going on in Miami? Well Summer is the only time they do it!
Yes, there was....they can work year round there if they want to.
nathan cook My understanding is that they tend to avoid summertime road work in southern Florida because of the excessive heat and humidity, plus the increased risk of thunderstorms.
Yeah! I can agree on that! No one wants to be out in the heat!
You forgot 836
No I didn't that was not along the route for where I was going, next video.
It's funny how people think California and Florida are so alike. This looks nothing like California
I agree 100%
Why do all the freeways and roads that are traveled alot by tourists have very non latin names but most of the other streets that are used mainly by locals named after mostly hispanic names? Ever notice that about Miami??? Weird lmao.
I loved driving in the Miami area particularly to Key West but man those folks down there can't drive.
So true!
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
do green Bay
I have no reason to go there
why
Seriously? I just don't.
Freewayjim where do you live.
Metro Atlanta
Go
1st!
Tom petty
L
This looks stupid. No fast lane everyone just go where they want
That's south Florida drivers for you.
If people were in the proper lanes it would not be an issue.
