Well i built a full custom pontiac 468 from a new block from All Pontiac with Kauffman heads. It is in my cousins 1969 firebird and guess what ? He installed a new TKX 500 transmission behind it. We will soon see how it works out!
As long as you don’t severely over power it like I do, you should be fine…
@@BMF_Garage i understand that.
To me the strongest standard transmission would be a Muncie M22 but it is an aged unit. I think aT56 from a viper has bigger input shaft and tail shaft.
Well that's a bummer
Yes it is….
I was going to take out Muncie but now I am scared lol.Welp if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.5th gear sounds nice though wish I had one. This Muncie is stout still hold up to this 500 foot pounds of torque. Thanks for the video and so sorry for this to happen to you.Hope all is good now.
It’s still a great trans and only broke because I’m putting so much power through it
Had mine installed, ran it on jack stands it went through the gears fine but transmission was making a lot of noise. Drained fluid it looked like metal flake paint.
Dang…. That’s not good… you figure out what was eating itself?
Haven't broken it open yet, hope its nothing to serious.
Nope not too….
Thanks for posting the video. I am at a point where I need to order a new trans to measure for a new driveshaft. This trans was on my short list… not sure now.
Well… it’s not a bad trans… if people would do their job. This is not a tremec issue… this is an issue with American powertrain. I bought a bunch of extras to beef up the trans and they messed up putting it back together.
@@BMF_Garage I guess Im confused, I will have to go back and look at the quote they gave me. I didnt know there were extra beef up options. That nut not being staked, seems like a pretty big oversight.
But you are right, the overwhelming quality and improvements seem to be well discussed. This hopefully was a one off mistake.
I opted for Cryo treated gears and a few other things that are supposed to take its capacity to 985 ft pounds
@@BMF_Garage oh man, the cryo treatment. I remember doing that years ago… over 985 would be nice….
Hopefully it holds that cause I’m going to test it!
I suspect this might be a recurring theme, liberty might be in order
So far I’ve never had issues with American powertrain… but you may be right….
@@BMF_Garage No FULL warranty on THEIR work.
That IS a major issue.
Just lost my business.
@@hotrodray6802doubt they ever had your business
That sucks I was thinking of getting one I think I’ll get something else
They are still good trans as long as you don’t over power them
Research the company. Really eye-opening.
I’ll have to do that…
That sucks man ! I just bought a tkx kit from American powertrain for my 1977 Chevy c20 . My bbc 467 is making 527 hp and 561 torque so hopefully I won’t brake mine
I’ve broken mine about 6 times now lol. I’m also only breaking it when I knowingly push the limits. 1.2xx 60’ and more than 8psi on the leave and first gear leaves the chat 💬
Yea that makes sense lol . Mine should be fine because it’s gonna be mostly street driven
Dude, that sucks. I've got a little over 500 miles on mine and no problems so far, but now I'm a little concerned. I'd heard nothing but good reviews on this transmission. I bought mine through Late Model Restoration. I've bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff from them and they've always been great to work with on warranty and returns but I'm hoping I don't need it.
Well… I needed something to hold more power… mine was race prepped with a lot of goodies by American powertrain… but someone wasn’t paying attention that day…
@@BMF_Garage Wasn't aware yours was modified by American Powertrain. Mine is stock as shipped from Tremec. Still sucks though. Is it working right after you fixed it?
Yes sir!!! Working on getting a video out on it now
Tremec is awful to deal with. Had a tail housing crack on a TKX with less than 1000 easy miles, and they were absolutely horrible to deal with.
They aren’t my favorite lol
How much power you running? Mines been perfect behind a 496 in a 4500lb wagon. Hope this doesn’t become a trend.
1003hp/982tq at the wheels and 3470 race weight with me in it doing 1.2 60 foot times.
So what were the symptoms that led you to pull the transmission? I must have missed it if you did in fact say so.
Wouldn’t go into 5th gear
@@BMF_Garage Was it noisy before hand? I know a guy with a new TKX that's saying is noisy in 4th and 5th.
Absolutely, but it was different than gear noise. The nit backed off the shaft and if I kept driving it would have come out the back side of the case. It sounded like a grinding noise muffled by fluid lol
that sucks!
Yes it does
Tkx extreme? I just order one today.
Yup. The Cryo treatment is bs in my opinion. The standard TKX was better than the extreme and I dusted them both launching at 3500 rpm on 2psi…
@@BMF_Garage what kind of power?
I was probably launching at 400 hp…. Car makes nothing at 2psi…
Whatt thats not good price here in Australia $7000
Nothing is priced good anymore. COVID screwed us all.
I have less than 200 miles on mine and 4th does not work
I had the 5th gear lock but back off on one of mine…
No FULL warranty coverage? They should have send you a new box.
That settles it.
IM NOT BUYING ONE.
Well, they would have done that… but it took months to get one the first time. I’ve got raceweek in 7 days and wasn’t about to play that waiting game this close to the event
@@BMF_Garage
So why would I buy one if I couldnt get it serviced quickly.?
If the factory can't supply them for months......
That’s a good point.. mainly because it holds more power than what I have…
American Powertrain had modified the transmission after BMF received the transmission. They aren't going to cover something you modified after you got it, genius. Although it sounds like they went above and beyond to offer a replacement anyway, that he didn't take because of wait times.
Modified right after getting it how? Fixing mistakes they made 🤦♂️ if it would have been put together correctly the first time, I never would have had to open it up.
Why would they not just replace the whole unit. All that metal material can’t be good for the unit.
Getting one at that point was hard plus 4000$ for a new one vs 750$ for parts…
What fluid was in it?
I was using amsoil synchromesh I believe
It’s all good. They were many contributing factors to the failure… after I get parts to fix it…. We will see if I really found the root cause… time will tell..
Fluid looks like you're mixing a new pear paint for the car.....🤦♂️
🤣🤣🤣 I should see if they make a color out of that paint
Brand new used ?! Sound like you bought someone else issues for less then factory😂
🤣
$2800 trans with crap build quality. That sucks
Yeah… and I paid extra for a lot of upgrades. This wasn’t on tremec… it was on the company that did the upgrades and put it back together
7000 here in Australia
Good old Tremec!!! I had a brand new T5 3rd gear totally shredded less then 400 miles ,Tremec would not warranty it!! POS company that DOES NOT stand behind their product!!! MADE IN MEXICO!!
Absolutely
