This is probably the one episode that stood out amongst all the others. Watching all those wave motion guns firing at once had my dancing around as a kid...then seeing they had no effect surprised the hell out of me.
Same here. I used a cassette recorder to at least get the audio of this episode. My family didn't get s vcr until mid 1881, after Star Blazers was taken off in New York..
Or called a retreat with the surviving ships, (there were quite a few), and perhaps tried that nifty strategy of hitting the bottom of the Comet Empire, a second time around. 😎✌️
This cartoon is so memorable, I was hooked and mesmerized. For a cartoon of its era, it sure was incredibly Cinematic in its production, Really impressive and great storytelling. The ultimate childhood soap opera
@@JonnyHolms I don’t think Gideon truly knew what he was up against. After all, there were no blue prints of the Comet Empire available. He made a decision to try to take out its city, but the EDF wasn’t able to adjust its aim to take out the missile launchers before it was too late. At least, that’s my two cents.
I remember as a kid thinking the faint scream at the end of Gideon’s message to the Star Force was the icing on the cake for the whole scene. It made everything that much more desperate.
Best dialogue- Capt Gideon says "THATS BAD" at 5:25 when the officer tells him of the enemies superior gun range. His cigarette and coffee voice needs few words.
Zordar's smirk disguises his rage at General Bleak's destroyed fleet, Invidia's and Dire's deception, Desslock's potential animosity from said deception and the loss of the Comet Empire's plasma shield. He already had to deal with Trelaina's planetary bomb attack. As he said in Episode 1, "All our conquered planets are watching us." Conquering Earth's fleet cost him much more than he planned. This is such a bad look for the Comet Empire.
You can tell that alot of loving care and attention to detail and plot went into this. I hope this will be available in 2199. That would really be something.
Can't wait to see this battle in Yamato 2202. After seeing the pasting the Gamilas gave the Gatlanteans in 2199, I think the redo may have the EDF being a bit more assertive since the Gamilas got pwned ugly by the Yamato alone.
The left-hand and lower portions of the picture is cut off, consistent throughout this upload. We're watching the upper-right 3/4 of the whole picture. Strange.
Probably necessary to avoid youtube's copyright bots. The other star blazers playlist on youtube which does show the entire picture has many episodes missing due to this. I think you can get around it with a VPN but i haven't tried in awhile.
Why should Zordar be pleased at the end? He lost his fleet and the plasma shield around the fortress. The Earth Defense Fleet exacted a prohibitively high cost for his victory.
Because Zordar still has far superior firepower and Earth's defences essentially are gone. He figures with the slave labour force he's about to capture, he can rebuild the fleet he just lost. Regenerating the city's plasma fields can be accomplished during that period easily enough.
There's one minor detail that I've never been clear about. Did those wave motion guns manage to bring the shield down, or did Zordar merely switch it off so that he could fire his weapons at the fleet? I'm probably over analyzing this episode, but it's a pity that the Earth Defense Fleet didn't have one ship hidden in reserve somewhere after the fortress' main shield went down. They could have had it rush out behind a moon or an asteroid and finish off Zordar with its wave motion gun. Then again, they weren't expecting the white comet to show up during the battle.
My impression was that the massed wave-motion gunfire took down the shield. And yes, Gideon should have had at least half his squadrons retreat to later intercept the city asteroid to destroy it from underneath.
I don’t think Zordar cares. He’s arrogant enough to think he alone has enough firepower to take down any threat. Besides, as it turns out, his ace-in-the-hole was that gigantic space fortress, so, to him, losing the fleet and the plasma shield wasn’t a real problem.
I don’t understand why the Andromeda didn’t just the guns to hit the bottom After the first two rounds they missed hitting the upper half Didn’t make sense
The english version is watered down quite a bit. The fight and carnage is much more in the incut version. I hated Captain Gideon was defeated. As a youngman this was the most dramatic anime I'd ever seen. I couldn't forget it especially this episode.
It can defend itself just fine. But being completely out numbered and its primary weapon that it was BUILT AROUND off line, it would have been saner to retreat, but that's the weakness of any draconian empire, you lose competent officers and valuable equipment because they KNOW retreating means they're just gonna be executed for cowardice anyway.

Captain Gideon was a good leader who went out like a champion.
I thought just before his ship was destroyed you hear someone screaming in the background.
I heard it too
You think after the first volly of fire, that bounced. Off the top of the c.e. gideon should have aimed lower at the missle silos
Or called a retreat with the surviving ships, (there were quite a few), and perhaps tried that nifty strategy of hitting the bottom of the Comet Empire, a second time around. 😎✌️
No, his thinking is 2 dimensional. They had the ships on the same plane. Should have ship above pointing down at it and ships below pointing up.

Gideon's death fucked me up as a little kid...40 plus yrs ago...
I always dug that disco version of the Comet Empire theme.
yea! its on youtube somewhere, i had it saved but i lost it
Love the Transylvanian organ music.
I bet Count Dracula could save earth 🌎 from that evil Prince Zordar,😜
ボリューム満点!其れから満足!
The comets sudden appearance still gives me shows to this day
How come gideon, didn't aim for the missle launchers
@@briannoonan6116 makes me wonder 🤔 too.

It was not as climatic as I remember it 40 years ago…but that wave motion shot at the comet was straight goosebumps.
Good show miestroz‼️👌 ya

What I never got as a kid is why they didn't just have a fighting retreat while continuously using the wave motion guns on the comet empire itself
they do it in the 2202 remake
9:12 Actually Gideon should say. "There. This is White Comet's true form"
for a long running space opera I wish they had more than 2 minutes showing the EDF vs the Comet Empire fortress .
Cause Zodar didn't care. HE HOLDS THE WHOLE UNIVERSE IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND HE JUST CLOSES HIS HAND AND PLANETS CRUMBLE THE STARS SHATTER!!!!!!!!!!!
Hm.
Best dialogue- Capt Gideon says "THATS BAD" at 5:25 when the officer tells him of the enemies superior gun range. His cigarette and coffee voice needs few words.
I love that Big Damned Heroes moment at 10:40. The music is awesome.
I always loved all the generic enemy names, lol. Scorch... Dire... Volgar... 😂🤣😂 Why not Lummox, Splatt, Glitch, and Deathguy? 😁

Don't forget manics fleet getting wiped out without firing a shot 😂

Well, honestly I think they did this battle justice in 2202, despite the sloppy writing
Zordar saw first manic and then bleaks fleets wiped out and took matters into his own hands 😂
I don't remember this episode. Wow. Like, dire, man.
ダイナミック!其れからゴージャス!
Gideon's just itching for a fight. Well, it looks like he got what he wanted.
18:06 As Ryu Hijigata. he should say 'Prepare Wave Motion Gun, Disperse mode'

Yeah I noticed that too.
Seems like the Andromeda-class ship simply falls apart whenever it is hit. Must be due to its hasty construction. lol
Looking back on this as an adult, why didn't the EDF have their fighters soften up the Comet Empire Fleet from the beginning?
Which weapon is more fearsome? The Magna Flame Gun or the disco music?

@@stevencohen624 Always wondered what exactly that shield is, and how it's produced. Yamato 2202 doesn't really give an answer either

Best battle ever for star blazers episodes
General gleek just got greedy
Magna flame gun was incredible
daniel shook . General Gleek's voice is like getting his balls squeezed. It's like bad dubbing going good.

13:54 Hello There!!
*said no obi wan ever*
2:05 There's no 'Hippelion' moon scene.
Hyperion.
Orion the old man is running as fast as Bionic Sandor...
Adrenaline is a powerful thing.
Don't forget: Sandor's arms and legs are bombs! 😂🤣😂 Used once, but never again, lol.
Maybe should the comet empire should have flagships that can defend themselves if their escorts are destroyed just a thought
