    BTS never "asked" nor "wanted" to get military exempt. It was the Korean government who introduced the BTS LAW as an honour, where the members could postpone their service until the age of 30 cause of their contribution to Korea's GDP. But as we already know the oldest member, JIN, who is 30 years old terminated the postponement and began serving, as of today 3 members are currently serving in the ARMY, because of this BTS LAW from now on any kpop idols who contributes to koreas gdp or in general can postpone their military service until 30.

    For the people in the comments, I would like to clear up what was said about BTS in the video because it could be misleading. This includes some background knowledge:
    South Korean able-bodied men ages 18-28 have to enlist in the military. In 2018 BTS went #1 on the US Billboard 200 album chart and were in the top 10 of the Hot 100, an unprecedented first for a Korean artist. For their global impact, they were awarded a the Order of Cultural Merit award in 2018, which is one of the highest honors in their country (they’re the only K-pop group to ever receive the award). Since 2018 the SK gov’t has been questioning whether to allow them exemption from military service because of how much they solely bring into the economy, which was billions of dollars (USD). This debate had gone on at the government level for years, while BTS has asserted several times that they would proudly serve “when called”, meaning when they would get their official order by the military to enlist.
    The conversation about their enlistment became an even hotter debate when they became the first Korean act to go #1 on the Hot 100 in 2020. In 2021, without their influence, the SK government passed a law that would allow those who received the cultural merit award to postpone enlistment, which only BTS qualified for. It was dubbed “the BTS Law”. It was also likely because they had gone #1 on the Hot 100 four more times at this point, were raking in even more money for the SK economy, and their oldest member would have turned the latest age to enlist.
    The government, without BTS’ influence, was still debating whether to exempt them regardless of their decision on the BTS Law well into late 2022, especially after in June 2022 BTS announced during their anniversary dinner that they would be pausing their group activities other than the ones they committed to later in the year. The exemption debate was at its height after they made that announcement because they didn’t want to lose out on BTS’ massive global financial influence. The military was also trying to come up with a plan where BTS would be able to serve in the military but also be able to perform while serving, which would only benefit the military since they would be under their management and control.
    In Oct 2022, BTS announced their intention to cancel any postponement benefits they legally received for their cultural merit award (which only the eldest member benefited from) and said they would enlist on their terms like every other normal private male citizen, as they had always intended. This put an end to the exemption talks they never participated in. They also revealed that they were actually going to begin their enlistments in 2020 (and even had discussions as a group to go as early as 2018) but Covid and going #1 on the Hot 100 diverted their original plans. Two members are currently enlisted. Jin, the eldest, went in Dec 2022 and J-hope (born in 94, and third oldest) went in May 2023. The rest will be enlisting as soon as they wrap up their individual activities so they can reconvene as a group by 2025.
    BTS has never once asked for postponement- it was awarded to them through a law that they had no part in creating. BTS has never fought to be exempted from serving as they considered it their duty to serve their country. The optics alone of asking for special treatment would have destroyed their careers, but it was never a question to them if they would serve.
    There have been other South Korean entertainers and their companies that have attempted to dodge enlistment or postpone it by trying to use their influence, and that’s where that Psy reference actually comes into play. You can read up on him and his enlistment controversy for yourselves, or even take a crack at the recent enlistment controversies from this year that has an K-pop idol facing prison time.

      Being idols is the least important point about what Ravi and Psy got in trouble for-- the issue is that young men have to put their lives on hold for something they can't opt out of unless they meet very narrow conditions. It's unfair to them. The abuse idols can face in the military is elevated because they're public figures, but abuse can unfortunately happen to any enlistee. Good luck to Ravi all the same. Plz correct the info, BTS never tried to delay or get exemption! They earned this honor due to their contribution to South Korea as they have received Order of Cultural Merit 5th Class, they were given 2 years extention by govt itself while the govt was still debating whether to exempt them or not because of their cultural, economical contributions and global popularity. They were announced as ambassadors for the Bid for busan world expo 2030 & held a free concert for it too. The govt was still delaying their decision on exemption so just a day after the concert they announced that they will be enlisting starting with Jin in 2022 & while they complete the service one after another they will focus on solo works! Jin Jhope & Suga (public servuce due to shoulder injury/surgery) have already began their service willingly! They never tried to get an exemption, they already had plans of enlisting after finishing MOTS7 tour (cancelled due to covid).

    so glad BTS took the decision to enlist on their own as a slap to SK’s government and media who for yearsss have been using them for their own benefit. served the government officials damn right.
    edit : y'all talking about the govt NOT using them need to know the fact that the govt wanted them to enlist all while they would be allowed to perform at times just so they could bring in the billions of won they do EACH YEAR. the govt didn't even want them to enlist with freedom that, might i add, every man gets in South Korea gets, which is absurd to me. im glad BTS didn't let them do that to them and just took the years off. and as a matter of fact, SK IS set to lose trillions by 2025 because of BTS’ absence.
    edit 2 (source) : “a report released by the Hyundai Economic Research Institute, which states that BTS contributed an estimated ₩5.10 trillion KRW (about $3.55 billion USD) to the Korean Economy every year. The same report mentioned that in 2017, one in every thirteen tourists visited Korea because of BTS. In addition, there were earnings of ₩1.58 trillion KRW (about $1.10 billion USD) from exports and consumer goods, such as commodities and cosmetics. You guys know about the BTS law, right?
    It used to be men between 18 and 28, that they had to complete their service, but in 2020, right before Jin turned 28, they put out this thing, which men can now begin their service latest by the age of 30. This was due to BTS being at the peak of their careers and bringing over 5 billion USD to the South Korean economy every year (more than all of K-pop together!), and they knew that if Jin was sent to the military, they would lose a lot of money. Now Jin went last year I December after turning 30, and then the other six members enlisted this year (jhope in April, SUGA in September as a social worker due to his past severe injuries, and the last 4 members: rm, v (special forces), Jimin and Jungkook (companion soldiers) last week.
    And at first, they wanted to completely exempt them from the service, but last year in June (9th festa), they said that they actually wanted to take a break from group activities (not a hiatus!) and said that they would want to focus on solo projects and to go to the military. They were out of ideas for further group projects, and just wanted to take a break and come back some time later in 2025.
    Gonna miss them so much 💜

      @Max_basil ปีที่แล้ว +80

      @@zonesplayroom6549 What I originally wrote is way too long so here's this summary instead:
      BTS' enlistment is basically just a move to promote the idea of the Republic's conscription to their young men at the expense of a sizeable source of income from tourism and general the general reach of Korean culture with the geopolitical power that reach possesses. The South Korean government has almost always heavily supported mandatory service, so to provide an exemption to the most popular men in the country would kinda hurt that stance. On the other hand, those same men have also provided the Republic of Korea with a sizable source of income, a boost in the tourism industry, and a growing cultural reach (which is a much greater source of geopolitical power than just having a good military nowadays)
      So, they basically just made the personal decision to enlist now rather than wait after realizing they probably wouldn't get offered an exemption/alternative service. Basically just the most mundane and probable thing happened. Best case scenario there probably won't be any major impact on the tourism industry or cultural reach of South Korea, there's still plenty of other attractors to the Republic and BTS isn't the exclusive identity of South Korea, plus they'll probably be able to return just fine after service (or something else fills the void in South Korea's cultural reach and stabilizes the tourism industry). Worst case scenario they just can't optimally recover their careers & popularity after service and the Republic starts feeling the losses a bit more gradually... or immediately and their tourism industry takes a tumble.
      It's basically just some international authority and tourism income. The Republic of Korea can go with or without K-pop obviously as it is still a fairly stable and powerful Republic (or corporate hell state depending on how you view it). It's just that having a single group be directly responsible for about 9% of the income to the tourism industry and probably a sizable overall impact on the tourism industry is a fairly nice thing to have for the economy that requires little effort or public spending.

    All college students without an income get 225€/month from the government (+accommodation) just for studying. I hope that gives you some idea how little the conscripts get payed. I’ve done both.

    • @pena6819
      @pena6819 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's actually less than that. For the first 6 months conscripts make about 70€ for 2 weeks,. With this inflation and gas prices it's literally nothing. I had to burn through my hedge fund investments during that period.

      What I don't get is why would you spend any money while as a conscript in the first place? I don't know how they do it in Finland but in the U.S you get a barracks, 3 meals a day, a job, free medical care, basically free everything you need in order to survive, and a job. Why would you need to spend any money on anything else?

    • @anni8456
      @anni8456 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@XX89948I do understand your point but in a country like Finland where people get payed to study and not the other way around it’s crazy that the people who serve in the military don’t get even the minimum social benefits. Even those kids who graduate from high school, still live with their parents without a job or a place in university get 400€/month for basically sitting at home.
      The men are forced to do it (I wasn’t) which is why they should get more financial aid than unemployed people or people who are studying. Many conscripts also have a family to provide for and bills to pay (electrics, phone etc.). The mortage or rent is payed for you, luckily. Finnish conscripts also get quite a lot of time off, some get most weekends off. Don’t get me wrong, more time off is a great thing but how are you supposed to feed yourself or others with that kind of money when you’re not getting any free food. The conscripts who still live with their parents do okay financially but the rest struggle with less than 150€/month.
      We’re priviledged to get any kind of money for work many of us are forced in to and things are so much worse in other countries but social benefits should be fair and in line with the rest of society.

      @@anni8456 I think the majority of the problems is money and the population. As much wealth Finland has accumulated, prosperity for many years, and safety it's gained while in the EU; being a poster child for your ideal modern European country. Finland is definitely making ends meet by all the social benefits it's citizens have.
      All these big changes that hit the head lines for its populace and for the world to see came with a cost of expenses. Expenses where the government has to cut corners like benefits for military conscripts and I also believe you as a citizen in their country, there's a lack of a lot of things that you may have noticed while living there.
      It's going to get better since Finland joined NATO and can receive more funding, but I doubt your government has its eyes set on its military any time soon as much as it wants to modernize its civilian sector. Any geopolitical problems it's neighbors has is for the rest of the members to solve. It's also good to point out that Finland is a very closed country from the outside world and doesn't tangle with other nations as often. It's a big part of their success since they can fully focus their spending on their population, and let others worry about competition and rivalries.

      It does make a big difference to want to fight then to be forced. The partner forces that worked with the US, Katusas, where hard to work with not all but a lot because they didn't want to be there so it was a pain in the ass to get them to do anything. And got alot of slack just cause they knew english and was working with US soldiers in the Katusa program. We had to work twice as hard to accomplish the mission cause they were lazy. But as soon as it was brought up they would be sent to the ROK Army. They switch there tempo real quick. Started to work because they knew there ass would be handed to them over there.

    Kansas had it bad! No electronics of face jail time, can't go home to see your family and they only got paid $100 a month. They still had to pay for a haircut and anyhting else they needed but most of their family helped them out and us U.S guys would let them use our phones to call home or play video games.
