I love this. Dance is sometimes one of the best and only ways we can communicate with our foreign military partners. I was stationed in South Korea and worked with and among them, but we couldn’t really talk to each other. There was little interaction beyond the occasional polite greeting and delivering reports. Then “Gangnam Style” came out everything changed. We were all dancing in the halls and recreating the elevator bit, and we got to laugh together. It is one of my favorite memories there.

I am in tears lol happy tears of happiness. The fact that everyone is having such fun and there’s no killings between anyone. This is what true brotherhood of soldiers should be like every day. Instead of fighting and killing each other. Coming from a military family and now being a military mom I hope that these are the same memories my sons experience in the military. The difference there is less in accent but more in used vocabulary and also the way grammar is applied. In the past decades South Koreans adapted many loan words from English and some from other European languages. Also there's probably much more grammar that has been simplified in South Korea due to gradual changes over time in casual speech. This difference is increasing with each day of separation. 50 years ago you probably wouldn't have spotted a difference but 70 years of isolation for one half do this to a language.

Dance is a language. You speak and express with your body. Everybody has it in them, and everyone's voice is unique. Just like learning to talk with your mouth, these guys have been talking with their body for a long time and are comfortable in their movements. I'm sure they too were nervous expressing themselves and being vulnerable like that in front of so many others, but through training and desire to connect, they overcome that apprehension and helped to create an amazing experence everyone got to enjoy.

I think of it more like a relationship of them having like the crazy, extremely strict, religious nut, paranoid parents. Like the type of family where they couldn't do Halloween because "it's the devil!" And not hand out to trick or treaters or did but gave out shit like raisins and pencils. And so doesn't let her kids play with others like in the neighborhood because they're a "bad influence". Thinking of them like a gang because they wear baggy clothes and rowdy. So the kids watch longingly from afar sighing as they think I wanna play too! It looks fun unlike this! Of their pre-approved media and toys like veggie tales because it's religious and rated toddler. Who then they go really wild when they go away to college with their new freedom.
I spent 21 years in the Marine Corps, and I can tell you that THIS is how allies are made, not though politics! Enlisted Marines have bonded in every clime and place just like this.... Semper Fi, Devil Dogs... Doesn't matter you're dancing, sharing a meal, or a fighting hole this kind of fellowship pays off!
Without the politics saying something along the lines of we make peace with the nation I don't give a fuck how good the army was with theirs you be enemies and if it came down to war your killing them.

I'm sure they too were nervous expressing themselves and being vulnerable like that in front of so many others, but through training and desire to connect, they overcome that apprehension and helped to create an amazing experence everyone got to enjoy.
