I used to have a long soak in the bath every Sunday evening and listen to a Dutch rock radio station, the reception was awful but they played some really cool music. One night I heard this guitar player who was just out of this world playing a Jethro Tull tune, his tone, his choice of notes and his rendition of this song was unbelievable. I prayed that they would mention the artists name at the end of the tune (they did not always) and as I do not speak Dutch I had to really listen to catch it. Joe Bonamassa was the name and I've been following him ever since. The guy is very friendly, very humble and his attitude to fans reminds me very much of Rory Gallagher. Nice guys can sometimes finish first

Yeah and I think that Rory Gallagher had very much the same hard time with and attitude towards the music industry as Joe Bonamassa does. And I remember Rory from his early days with Taste in London in the late 1960s.

It's great to see there are still people who actually know how to play an instrument, and make good music... Hopefully, someday, good old blues based Rock N Roll will make a comeback --- most of what we have today is pathetic...

I know its been years since you said this but it echoes something I've thought about. In the 60s and 70s most rock was blues rock. In the 80s it strayed but SRV, Jeff Healey and others carried the tradition. In the 90s we had Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. In the 2000s it was Joe Bonamassa. The 2010s and 2020s, so far, has not seen a blues rocker with breakthrough success (although as others have said, they're out there in obscurity). I hope there are new artists in the wings about to get recognition and a broad audience for their music around the corner!

I've been a rockin roller since the 60's, but as I have gotten older I wasn't that aware of the new talent emerging like I would have in back in the 70's especially. A few years ago I ran accross a concert I believe was on PBS, which first introduced me to him.
At that time I said, " Well who the hell is this guy ", I really thought he was a blow hard, one man band kind of guy, of which I thought was just a everyday JOE, who could play great guitar, that I couldn't deny. Now over the past 5 years or so and especially from hearing the story concerning the record industry, which we have all known for years was true and his desire to be remain pure to his audience and his music, I'm totally getting on board.
I see him coming into the main stream music would very, very soon and final;y getting the kind of recognition he truly deserves. Joe is a fantastic artist who deserves ever accolade that he receives, and it will be great to see him up front and in there faces / record industry showing that the dream can come true and has with Joe, THANKS JOE for keeping it ALL real and ALIVE, keep carrying the torch Joe.

JB has beat the industry, but being a completely independent artist is rough. You have to tour constantly, you have to record constantly, and your biggest revenue will come not from the music itself but from the merch and other gigs. Check out the Indie Band Survival Guide if you're interested in this sort of stuff. JB didn't beat the industry solo either. Kevin handles production. Roy handles management. Therein lies the lesson for independent artists: you need a support team if you want to go far.

JB has been on pbs VT several times, first time I saw him was maybe in 2013, 2014. One time I watched the 'Carnegie Hall' concert and then it totally hit me.... eff'n WOW! Luckily I had recorded that so I could see it several times and every time I watched it I liked it more than the previous time.
But nothing prepared me for a life performance, in St. Augustine FL this last november. That was beyond my imagination. When I got home that evening, remembering what I had heard and seen, I realised that I hadn't been so completely in love with the music, show and a musician since... since... since I was a teenager? I just cannot remember when that was because it is many decades ago. And I am so happy I can still feel this compassionate about music.
Music, I can not live without it. And JB has proven that good music is still been made. I have no words to express my gratitude for that.

I appreciate this video. Helps me understand the history of Joe. Not everyone will get it, that's ok- don't feel bad- move along... This is the story of a talented guy who isn't hidden away and marketed as a deity. The music of the 60's and 70's will always be the best ever. But it's 2015 and I'm sure glad that great music is still being made. And I'm glad it is different. I want it- and more

These personal pieces on Joe and his family and his upbringing are so very important in bridging the divide between him, as an artist, and the listener who knows the guitarist "with the funny name." I can go back and listen with a new ear because I really feel like I know Joe. To those who don't get his style, there are many artists who don't resonate with everyone. The one thing no one can take away from Joe is his dedication, from a young age, to the craft and art of playing. My Strat collection will never be played as well as someone like Joe but, someday, when I pass them on, I hope they inspire some kid to do what Joe has done. Making it in the music business is nearly impossible. But creating a new music business that works is a tribute to his teams dedication on not taking "no" for an answer.
Thanks for sharing with us Joe... Godspeed to your and your career and your family.

not root for the underdog?? An extremely gifted musician wants to make his living doing what he loves. For Joe wanting to keep control of his music by owning it (sign with a record company and you WILL lose control) I say why not ??
Playing the Blues is not a big market your trying to appeal to, why give the record company your hard earned money??

It has taken Joe 25 years to become an overnight success. The general public is only now beginning to recognize his unbelievable talent. He is not a diva, nor a drug-addled rock star who thinks the world revolves around him. Instead, he is simply a guy who lives and breathes the guitar. If Joe were in it for the adoration he would NOT be going about his career the way he does. And he definitely would have stayed with BCC.. Instead, he's true to himself and his music. Without playing a guitar upside down, there's no way he, or anyone else, will ever sound like Hendrix. But I'm convinced he is neck and neck with Clapton, and Clapton is the #1 player in the world. Some guys, like Zakk Wylde for instance, are unbelievably fast, but are not polished and fast like Joe and Eric. (Gary Moore would be a close third if he were still with us..) .. Overall, you don't have to be a great fan of Joe to appreciate what he does, but you can't tear him down if you have ANY knowledge of the guitar and guitar players. Before it's over, Joe will be the #1 player in the world.

Rick Carruth there is no ''#1 player in the world''

      @LfunkeyA 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+NightPanda there is no number one, and music is subjective. but music is a competition, and always has been. that is how skill was developed and how music has become as complex as it is. you don't HAVE to compete, but many do and it pays off in one way or another. some are lost to it, but others gain. some compete with themselves, some with others.

I've never understood why people want to rank artists. Who's better Pollack or Rembrandt? It depends on how the artists affect the individual. Who's better SRV or Clapton...couldn't care less who's better I like them both and on a given night depending on my mood I'll prefer one over the other but both hold their own and neither is "better". A lot of people love Cold Play and a lot of people don't. Both camps have good arguments but in the end, it's about how the artists affect you and whether you, as an individual, like or dislike an artist. There is no #1 when it comes to artists there are only artists you like more than others and prefer better than someone else does.

Came across Joe B's music about 7 yrs. ago and have been a fan since about one minute in...have been listening to blues for 30+ yrs. and playing blues guitar for about 20 (not to his level by any means) and he hit a new level with me immediately with all he brought to the table with a great guitar...but his producer hit it right on the head putting phenomenal band and later an entire orchestra behind him to just accentuate his awesome talent was genius...

  • @IPushHard

Every time I see or hear Joe, I become a bigger fan. His playing is absolutely phenomenal, but to me thats not necessarily the biggest draw.
When Joe talks about the music of other musicians, he speaks with the expertise of a true fan. He talked about Jeff Becks album like it was a book he'd read 100 times. So I know that when he pays tribute to another artist or speaks complementary of them he is not just paying lip service for the sake of packaging or marketing his own stuff... He has as much genuine passion for listening as he does for playing, and that translates into his amazing performances.
He seems to be a genuinely good man and there is no doubt about his dedication and willingness to work.
So as someone who started this Bonamassa journey as a respectful skeptic, Ive made more of a turn around that I ever would have predicted.
Maybe the hardest working guy in music? ..one of.

To me, Joe is a rock musician who plays the blues (and if not he's always ending up going back to it), very much like Gary Moore and many other rock musicians. He's a very talented but hard working musician who's got an idea of what he wants and found the right people to support him. That and the relentless drive to do new projects should be enough to make a successful career. At the latest, when you find yourself playing a Dumble Overdrive Special at the Royal Albert Hall you know that you've made it ...

I'm really confused, people nowadays are always bitchin' about the mainstream music scene, that ''there's no talent in today's music etc.'' (which btw. is bullshit, there's plenty of talented musicians out there, you just have to look.)
Then you got artists like Joe,the guy has talent, doesn't appear on tabloids drunk or coked out of his mind and doesn't use cheap tricks to get attention via controversy etc.On the contrary,he's making quality records, plays great gigs & always talks with great respect about his influences. And people still don't like this! ''Oh he's not real,he's got no soul,-insert name of long dead legendary musician- was way better than him,meh meh meh meh this meh meh meh that....''
I'm starting to think that we deserve to get bombarded by autotuned crap, because we don't apreciate good musicians anymore.

Joe looking forward to finally hearing you live( Salt lake City) and like everyone else that knows your dedication and your contribution to blues and to music would love to sit down and just jam joke and laugh with a idol. Thanks in advance Joe and to the many who made it possible for Salt lake to hear tomorrow.

The power of Aspergers can result of some impressive stuff. In this case, its when Aspergers is applied to "blues". No sense arguing JB's relevance to the art form. The people who understand it don't need it explained. He's a first rate mimic.
