- This is our process of doing compost extract on a large farm scale on our 4500 acre farm in Northern Montana. We made this video to help other people as we couldn’t find much on how to do this at this scale.
Excellent video production of this extraction process. I’ve been a big proponent of compost for our garden and farm for years. This process kicks it up a notch. A BIG notch!

Many of us are following Elaine Ingham and Johnson -Su’s research and applying it in home and market gardens, but it is even that much more inspiring to see you applying it at scale and then sharing your learning. Great video and explanation. I'm planning to add Johnson-Su extract infurrow on my corn this year. Can you share the results you had with your 2021 crop? Any comparisons with conventional fertilized fields?

Very interested in what your doing here,,,sorry I missed you at the NRCS presentation in Chester…we farm NE of Chester,,,have been using a disc drill since 2015 and a Stripper header since 2017 and are very happy with the results thus far. Have been following along with the “regenerative ag” movement with great interest and now with the obvious concentration in the input industry for Ag as well as the current political situation I’m ready to jump in and test the waters with this type of system. Appreciate the time and effort you have put forth here.

Korey, for next version you could consider ‘micro bubbles’ instead of a normal air pump. You can find it on YT. After that you can add hydrogengas in the airstream too. Look for ‘plants dont lie’ on YT from George Wiseman. Kr Hans

What type of waste are they collecting from restaurants? Food scraps or oil/grease?
Food scraps but I would be careful of the restaurants supplier, may not be organic food waste. But microbes can really clean up some terrible stuff so why waste any food.

But if we put the whole compost in soil, then also all microbes & fungi will go to soil. What is extra benifit of extracting compost tea and then putting in soil. I am new to this so please help me to understand
It really comes down to what scale you want to do this on. With the extract we can put this through our liquid kit on our drill which allows us to spread a lot of biology over an acre using just 5 gallons of solution. If you were in a gardening situation placing straight compost by the seed would be a better solution. The extracted product can also be sprayed on the leaves of the plants which we try to get done when time permits and the weather cooperates. We do have some neighbors that have figured out how to mix the compost right with the seed after screening it and are putting dry product through the drill which is another great way to do this if it doesn't plug the drill up.

Why does the typical Johnson-Su take a year to “brew” and yours take so much less time?
Both methods are identical, because they both use compost to make an extract. Who knows how long the compost Kory used would have taken to make. The longer the better because it becomes progressively fungi dominant over time, as well as increasing biodiversity.

I think there thinkering with compost first cause he mention they still incorporated nutrients in the soil prior to planting, im sure they will after they lean of the conventional stuff as they see teh results or maybe the approved like many ag does a bit of organic input n that qualifies them as organic.

first thank you for sharing your knowledge with us ! my field sprayer has a seven roller pump and i have some thirty gallon spray tips would this work to apply extract to thirty acres of pasture ? and since i am doing a smsll area would home depo compost work

Have you ever tried NCT (non aerated compost tea)? I believe this is the traditional approach, and contrary to popular belief does not produce anaerobic bacteria.

Thnx for this. A much more detailed nuts & bolts explanation for farm scale use than I have seen in a while. Trying to piece together the steps & equip needed from other vids has been frustrating.

How do you clean your equipment to make sure there's no biofilm remaining when done?
If don’t feed the extract biofilm doesn’t seem to be an issue as long as we don’t leave it sit for a couple weeks in warm weather in the tank. We do rinse the tender tank with a fire house setup and a 400 gallon tank with a 2” pump every other day and sometimes more depending on how much sediment we get in the bottom of it
What's the name of the extractor ?
what about a vortex to collect solids towards the middle. It is called the Tea Leaf Effect... the idea is avoiding filters as much as possible. Recirculating from the outside and edge of the vortex is much less sediment, and it can naturally aerate

Korey, The filter your using requires 80GPM according to the web I like the filter but don’t have that pressure are you actually pumping 80GPM Into your tank
Hey Tom that is what we would be pumping from the trailer to the liquid cart in the field. We used it from the extractor to the trailer too and it worked fine at 50 gpm or so
later adding some paramagnetic towers as they did in ireland

Korey, why are the microbes made from extract more durable compared to a tea?
Hey Greig great question. Tea is basically extract with food and oxygen added to it which make the biology start multiplying. When that process is happening it takes a lot of oxygen to keep them going so if you don’t aerate it it becomes anaerobic pretty quickly and the good biology gets taken over by things undesirable for crops. With extract it can sit a lot longer without issues because the biology population stays pretty much stable without food added. Tea certainly has a fit for foliar applications but extract is much easier to work with for what we are doing.
