      I started my vintage Singer journey with a 201. As a matter of fact , the one in the video is my “go to “machine for chores. Since , the paint job is the worst of my herd , I abuse it the most.

      @@redoak3809 I bought it specifically because I wanted a treadle zigzag machine. Changing bobbins is the most annoying part of treading with it, and my treadle set up is lighter weight (steel instead of wrought iron) but I love it.

    The base for my 216g has a metal extension in the back right corner, that keeps it from flipping back when you tilt back the machine. A fantastic design, I wish all my cast-iron portable machine had this feature.

    • @yannis5425
      @yannis5425  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also had the same extension. It is attached with 2 screws. I used the same 2 screws to attach the 90 degree stainless steel that I modified as the point of attachment for the gas strut modification. The. Metal extension was used by singer to cover the void in the table base of treadle singers , it also served as a guide for the leather belt of the treadle.

    Its allways nice to own many machines , i got a dozen, and some are shelf queens but i pull them down and run them from time to time , i figure i pay so little and have the space , why not save some of histories more quality items and show future gens how things can be made to last , im hoping my grand kids one day can appreciate me saving such things so they dont think its allways been a throw away world , there was a time when your hard earned dollar was spent wisely and a singer machine proves this ........

    I've had Singer 206 & 318 zig zag machines, back in the day but they take a style L bobbin I've kept the 306 Singer. My favorite Sewing machine is a Pfaff 130 in a treadle cabinet. I've used it for years after my Pfaff 1473. The 130 is the smoothest machine I have, quiet as a wrist watch, and with the treadle feels as fast as a power table!

    • @yannis5425
      @yannis5425  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, The Pfaff 130 is a wonderful tool. When the cleated timing belt breaks , you can still find replacements for around 130€ . I have seen the Singer 206 & 319 , which also have timing belts which can also be replaced. However , these beautiful Singers don’t use regular needles , so that may be a problem.

    • @lamarrharding4776
      @lamarrharding4776 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The special needle for the 206, 306, and 319 are required for the interference with the bobbin case. Replacing the bobbin case with a commercial size L bobbin case will allow 130 size needles.

      Interesting information about changing the bobbin case to accept 130 size needles. I think , the manufacturers decision to make exclusive needles was a failed attempt to protect their brand. In the end , they were forced to use the “universal” needles.

    • @lamarrharding4776
      @lamarrharding4776 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Universal needles will strike the original bobbin case, a generic L style bobin case works with clearance.

      Congratulations , You have a beautiful. SS Vintage Singer sewing machine with a hybrid pedigree , distinct Singer lineage and added German flair. The 215 G has all the advantages of the classic Singer 15 , with distinct differences : 1) The tensioner is up front and not on the side. 2) Drop feed dog lever. 3) Longer stitch length 4mm , great for decorative long top stitching.

    Just scored a mint condition 216G. A local thrift store was relocating and because the inventory was donated but moving trucks cost money they were blowing everything out at giveaway prices. Also, if you work on vintage machinery where heating is sometimes an unavoidable evil, spend the money on an induction heater tool. They start around $200 with electronics kits for half that. For getting a precise amount of heat exactly where you want it they're worth their weight in gold.

    [A bit late to the party] The base that came with my 319k Green machines it has a steel bar at the back that rotates out from the wood base to stop the machine tipping over and a special locking catch under the bed near the back right that auto locks as you tilt the machine.
    I also have a 306k black machine in a table with a knee controller that presses on a standard removeable Bakelite foot pedal. I am 6ft 2in so I can't fit under the table to use the knee leaver.
    I am able to use standard 15x1 705 needles in all the machines rather than the 206x13 but it is close to the bobbin on the right when on full stitch width.

    Love this presentation, thank you. I have three 201s and didn't know the 316 which is on sale near me in Italy. I am really tempted to buy it as it is quite a rare machine, I think. Yours is actually the only good video around. Would like to know more about that machine.

    • @yannis5425
      @yannis5425  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the review , and happy to be of help. The only drawback on the 316G is the awkward positioning of the bobbin case. But I remedied this problem with a gas strut modification, (previous video). The important thing about machines in general is to be open minded and inquisitive. You learn from others and by trial and error. The vertically placed forward facing class 15 Bobbin case , also enables you to utilize twin needle sewing with the needles placed left and right. Your collection of 201 machines give you a great foundation in vintage Singer sewing. The 316 will give you all the advantages of zig zig , and many other stitches . Of course , there is a learning curve in using something new , but that is part of the fun. As always , check the machine over. Put it thru it’s paces and check that things move easily, .Free movement of the needle bar , feed dog lever , left right - center lever, Forward - reverse , tension dial etc. Good Luck , and happy to help.

      As with all my hobbies , I try to learn as much as I can , which is difficult with my time constraints. No one taught me about sewing machines. I am a father of two teenage children and a practicing Orthopedic Surgeon, who presently lives and works in Greece. As I mentioned before , the 316 series were made in Germany . Records of exact production figures are shady at best. Never the less , they were not made in the quantity that the Kilbowie ,Scotland was manufacturing back in the day. I assume that pieces are more easily found in Germany. Try to buy one in good condition. Servicing and painting these machines is not that easy , and takes patience and experience. I have colleagues and friends in Italy , unfortunately COVID makes moving around very risky and difficult. As. matter of fact , I made the video when I had COVID and wanted to release some anxiety during the ordeal . Fortunately I escaped unscathed and wish the best for everyone.

    I have found what I believe is a 216G I don't know the condition, but it is in a regular sewing machine table. I have not seen the controller and I can clearly see it is missing one of the bobbin spindles on top. Is this worth getting? Are parts available for it if needed? I would want to use it in a treadle configuration. Does it take a standard 15 bobbin shuttle to go with the 15 bobbins? I really want a 400 series treadle but thought this might do. Can't find a lot about this machine.

    Can you explain which sewing machine is better when sewing leather when comparing 316g and 201k?

    • @yannis5425
      @yannis5425  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, It depends. If it's thin leather the 201k (outboard not potted motor) can handle it. For thicker leather, sewing machines with vertical 15 class oscillating bobbins , like the 316G, 216G & of course the Singer 15k are recommended because they give you the option of using thicker thread more easily. In the horizontal rotary class 66 bobbin in the 201 , the thread is fed at a horizontal angle and theoretically limits the use of thicker thread.

      @ddiuni9964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yannis5425 Leather with a thickness of 6cm~7cm (60mm~70mm) can be made with 316g, and 201k is difficult. thank you for telling me.

      Hi , The Singer 15 series is an all time classic. I have 2 of them with RAF decals. I have one set up as a show piece because it is really nice with the floral pattern engraving on the side plate and back plate. I have it set up with a genuine Singer hand crank. However , it is an older series and doesn’t have reverse , drop feed dog , and stitch length selector. My second , Singer 15. RAF , was a real find. It was at the end of Scotland’s production run , and has everything, Drop feed dog from the base plate (something they probably copied from the Japanese clones) , Stitch length selector , reverse , & indexed thread tensioner. You can not go wrong with a Singer 15. Beware of Chinese , Indian copies. Prefer a machine with outboard and not potted motor. It is easier to maintain and replace motor if needed.
