For anyone who's curious, the UK (at one point) made it 2.5 *years* without a single police shooting (March 4, 2012 to September 15, 2014).
And this is just killings. Imagine if all the injuries they cause were included in the list
or wrongly accused incarcerations.

Even if 99% of these cases are legitimate, it’d shift the problem from “the police are murdering people” to “the government doesn’t even *try* to reduce the crime levels”!
And in general, it makes the US police force seem like a trigger-happy (or barbaric in the case of melee) squad and the UK police force like a considerate team.

Guns have nothing to do with this. Here in Italy even traffic wardens have guns but they somehow don't shoot you for parking where it's forbidden or running a red light.
Guns aren't the problem, hell, there are countries that allow guns and have lower murder rates than countries without them. The problem lies with USA's policies and social care.
@@demoniack81 here in Northern Ireland all police have been armed for decades. Many routinely carry rifles equivalent to AK-47s. Even in the Troubles we didn't have figures to match USA. Training and inherent cultural restraint against shoot to kill, especially in ordinary situations.

The biggest reason for this discrepancy is that most Americans have guns. In the EU, you're surprised when you see a gun. Even on a police officer.
In Italy police officiers have guns, but the people killed by police have been beated, not shooted.

You will be surprised! There are plenty of gangs that carry guns in the UK. If the police are supposed to kill anyone, it would be those guys they would be killing because they have guns.... but guess what.... they don't.

A lot of police offers carry guns in the EU but they barely use them. I think one problem in the USA is that almost everyone could potentially carry a gun and thus could potentially be seen as a danger for the officer. It's not the only problem though.

Funny how in 2010 suddenly there is age info for all the victims with names and from there on the info is not there anymore for one year and then the age is recorded/available again.
Love your visualizations. There's a German dude who does data analysis and also produces some great graphs showing the data that he gathered and he makes really great and fun conclusions from this data which also proves to be surprisingly accurate. His name is David Kriesel. I think you two could have awesome conversations.
So I'd love if you could dig into the reasons why there was that difference in the quality/completenes of data points that you got. Is this a coincidence or where there different laws? Why did id revert back after a year? Stuff like this always amazes me.

The reason for differences between years is not different laws or anything like that, it's just incomplete data.
There's no central government source compiling this data in the US, so abacaba used Wikipedia lists that are more complete for some years than for others. Since it's made by volunteers, it's only as good as people could be bothered to make it. The US list is split into separate articles by year and sometimes by month, so if someone just starts filling in missing information in a given part of the list it will be limited to a certain point in time
The Washington Post police shootings database has many more documented deaths than Wikipedia, and also has a fairly consistent number of shootings from year to year. However it's limited to shootings exclusively, and it only goes back to 2015.

My initial reaction to this was “but maybe their violent crime rate is lower?” so I looked it up:
When comparing murders, the UK actually has around 1/4 of what the US has per capita, which may seem like a big difference, but compared to the fact that this shows we have over 100 times more police killings per capita there is still a staggering difference between how our two police forces use life ending force.
Look up the assault on officer rates between the 2 countries. America has way more.

I think comparing the Police killings in the US and UK might be a bit too much of a extreme example to compare as everyday UK police are almost never armed. And it's hard to kill people without being armed.
On the other hand. In the case of Germany, France, Japan or Korea. these countries have an fairly armed police, yet still their police killing rates are much lower. If I were you, I would use that as a comparison. Instead of the case of the UK as police killings being low in countries where the police is unarmed can look obvious to some.
EDIT: Also I kind of want to add that saying that police killings as a statistic should be compared proportionate to total Arrests or Crime Rates. Not the population.

This is reall confusing. What looks like bursts of additional killings may simply be additional coverage. One coludn't tell if those bursts correspond to a minor decrease in the grey mass of unknown age cases

As a Brit, I'm disappointed that our protesters generally hold the same level of resentment and aggression towards our police as the US police.
26 killings is still 26 too many, and this comparison should reflect badly on US police rather than reflect well on UK police, who also must improve. However, (AS FAR AS I'M AWARE) there have been no incidents of UK police brutality when dealing with recent protests - unlike the sickening and horrendous scenes we have seen across the US, who's police seem all too happy to abuse/assault peaceful protesters, including elderly people and children.
This is why I was disappointed to see people LAUGHING at the UK policewoman, who was knocked off her horse and suffered a collapsed lung and broken collarbone. I appreciate that it was a tiny minority of people who escalated things and ruined the protest, and I wholeheartedly support the demonstrations and the 99% of people who kept it peaceful. BUT, 49 UK police officers have been injured so far, with bottles, bicycles and fireworks being thrown at them and their horses. This isn't acceptable at all, when GENERALLY our police perform their jobs well (when compared to US police). To reiterate, I COMPLETELY support this movement (and I'm glad Colston's statue has been torn down), just find hurting UK police too far.

It’s relieving (but still obviously tragic) to see hardly any cases in the UK compared to US.
I'm from Scotland (currently part of the UK) and people here are still protesting because Black Lives Matter. We, with a tiny fraction of deaths by police, still think people suspected of crime or even those who later are proven guilty of crime need our help more than a death sentence. We do not have by any means, a perfect system but we will protest again and again until it is better. Even then, we will be looking to make improvements and take away the reason for us to be included in a video at all. I was quickly pretty numb to the bottom 4/5ths of the video but I winced every time a cross appeared on the top. That was a gut wrenching video.
In one traffic stop, one NYPD police officer fired more bullets than the entire German Police force did in that year ..and they do carry firearms... let that sink in ....

If gun is the reason, you can compare other countries with guns vs no guns. There are more police killings in Nicaragua (much of Americas really other than US) that has much fewer guns to US, and US has far fewer killings. It's more complicated than just guns.

The problem is gun culture in US. This is the source of all of this. I know that banning all guns isn't the right solution (it would just increase gun mafias like prohibition with alcohol). This is the problem for years and years of fixing.
I don't believe all cops in the US are bad and I don't think it's fair to base your hatred for an individual on the fact that he or she is a cop or make general sweeping statements like 'i hate cops'. Just like I don't think it's right to base my opinion on a whole race of people because of the way some of them may be. Not to compare an occupation to a human race, but to compare the logic behind the thought process. Yes when I see something happen like with George Floyd, I'm disgusted, saddened and hurt as a human being...I believe most all decent people feel these emotions to one degree or another, of course there are moments I think 'fucking pussy cop' or 'fuck the police'. But I don't let those emotions dictate or guide my principals and rational thinking when trying to understand the details and facts of a situation.
I'm not going to sit here and say there isn't a problem, clearly there is. Admittedly I am extremely shocked by the visualization of the data in this video and realize how much bigger a problem it is than I had thought.
I don't know the answers but I know replacing one hate for another will just keep everyone fighting and arguing. I don't think any one perspective has the answers either, the problems are deeply rooted in racial, political, and class issues, corruption, greed, hatred. I'm afraid very little will be addressed or changed unless the right and left can stop drifting so far away from each other and learn to convey their ideas and concerns in a productive way, rather than memes (as funny as some are) and treating each other like trash for a differing viewpoint.
Unfortunately the data also shows the left drifting more left and the Right staying about the same or drifting to the center. Seems like one side needs to drift back to the center for things to work out. One group is leaving larger society behind for perceived wrongs and at this point if you don't completely agree with every narrative they pull out of the data then you are racist. This is the real problem and why the country is divided. BLM is a race baiting organization. It's sad to see people fighting for something that could benefit everyone but then only seeing it from their side while simultaneously calling all of society at fault. Usually if every encounter you have is an issue, you start looking in the mirror. Not these people, when there is an issue they always blame "the other side". There are no sides, all lives matter, but not to them. They have to divide and that's why I think they are going to get the division they want, but not the way they think they will. What I see on a daily basis is people at each others throats, more interested insulting and putting each other down. If things continue down this path, nothing will ever be resolved and society will be divided further and further apart. We're all being played by the politicians and ones in power, who want us divided and are the real enemy.
The reason for this discrepancy is quite simple. In Britain, police generally aren't allowed to carry guns. If they were, it's quite likely the ratio of US to UK deaths would be much less.

Wrong conclusion. In many other countries, the police also carry guns, without the same result. In fact, many policemen reach the end of their career without having to fire their gun once. For example, the total number of people killed by German police, in the whole of 2019, was 17. This does not mean the German police never make mistakes: "A witness called the police, because he saw a man on the local cemetery, armed with a rifle. Police officers felt threatened by the man and shot him three times in the chest. He died later in hospital. Investigations revealed that the man was a hunter, ordered to control the rabbit population. I think its partly to do with the people in the states are allowed to carry firearms. its not easy to find the root cause of the issues. i do hope the issues are found and resolved.
It doesn't really matter. If most of those victims were innocent, then it's obviously a bad thing. If most of them were dangerous criminals, then you have too many dangerous criminals, which is also not good. Both situations indicate that something is seriously wrong in the US, compared to Europe. I blame this on the fact that you are largely on your own in the US, while there are many safety nets in most European countries. If you get in any trouble, there is plenty of help from the government available to try to get you back on your feet. This greatly reduces the need for criminal activity.

If most of these victims were indeed dangerous criminals, than this statistic shows that you have way too many dangerous criminals, compared to other countries. Giving untrained police is a bit like giving a loaded pistol to a chimpanzee - it's only going to end in tears. The recent incident when police shot a drunk driver who tried to run away - why shoot, you know who he is because of the car registration - just pick him up from his home later when he is sober. You don't need to kill him - total lack of sensible training methods.

Okay, can we just talk about how the US police literally killed a *two month* old? I'm from the UK (there's 67.5 million of us, don't be surprised) and I'm relieved to see that we have pretty much 1000 times less than the US. That means if we had the same population as the US, we would have ~200x lower rate than them.

One thing that scares me about the protests is how many people it'll kill with Corona. Yes, it's undeniably a great cause to go out and protest, but the protests are probably indirectly costing thousands upon thousands of lives by prolonging the pandemic, killing people who did not decide to take that risk themselves. I find it hard to justify protesting at this moment because of that. Again, the cause is most certainly just, which makes it very hard to say, but please do your protesting from home for now. Even if you think you can do it safely, there are so many factors that you don't have any control over.
Also, I've seen some cite FOMO as a reason for wanting to go out and protest, that is just the dumbest possible reason for protesting, even under normal circumstances. It's not a a fun event that you go to. It's not meant to be a fun event either.
The information is right here, yet some people will still say there's nothing wrong with the system. They will say that if people didn't break the law, no one would get killed. That gun ownership is painted in a bad light just because of 'a few irresponsible owners'. That owning lethal weapons makes them feel 'safe'.
Just think about it for a moment: If one day the government gave everyone a means to end someone else's life instantly, would you feel safe? No. Would you feel safe if they instead gave a lethal weapon only to 'good people'?
It sounds a little counter-intuitive, but as a government it's better to assume most if not all people will act badly. Sucks for the ones who won't, but the consequences of letting 'just a few bad apples' have that kind of power are unimaginable.

A former sheriff's deputy in western Kansas has been found not guilty of first-degree murder and child abuse in the death of his infant son.
Kody Lee Hanson's two-month-old son, Roston Lee Hanson, died April 8th, 2015 at a Wichita hospital. A jury on Friday found Hanson not guilty on both counts.
Prosecutors had alleged that Hanson abused the child April 7 of last year.
Hanson, of Jetmore, had worked for the Hodgeman County Sheriff's Office since 2014. The sheriff's office says Hanson is no longer an employee.
Prior to working in Hodgeman County, he worked for the Goodland Police Department and is a veteran in the Kansas Army National Guard.

UK police are trained to deescalate and protect lives, they also do not have guns as a general rule and they are there to protect life and serve the community, up until recently they have been trained to preserve life (US style training which puts the lives of the officers above the lives the citizens in all in engagements) this changed when the US style of policing was standard training by US officers and has meant that street policing has become more violent and life threatening to the general public. The same as has happened in Australia and other countries that have gone more right wing and accepted training from US police officers and so called experts to imprison more people and run police with a level of fear and immediate life ending violence!

Do it properly, do the research on the racial makeup of police shootings, then adjust it for population, then readjust it for propensity to commit violent crimes (which will give an indicator of how often you are likely to face the wrong side of a cops gun). You can have a narrative, just present it honestly with the facts laid out.

I think quite a lot of the deaths in the UK came from the Tower Bridge Terrorist attack in 2017 (I think). The police didn't know who the terrorists were so I think they accidentally killed few innocents. I believe they killed all the terrorists in the end though.

So... just did a random check... I stopped the video and picked one random person to look up their story. I landed on Henry Dang - 2010.
Remember, this was classified as a police killing.
The off-duty officer (Windsor Lock's Michael Koistinen), was out drinking, and drove himself home. Doing 70 in a 35MPH zone, he hit and killed Henry on his bike. While tragic, it somehow got misclassified as a police killing.
That said, there was definitely some shady-ass cover up on the part of Michael's father, who was also an officer and was on the scene.
The next was Darius Pinex - a legitimate police fatality. On duty officers shot and killed Mr. Pinex.
So while the data isn't all dirty, there is some that needs to be cleaned up.
All of that said, remember that comparing these data points is an apples to oranges comparison (see the random data points I checked), as different countries (hell different states) classify police killings differently. It's just not that simple.
It's not that simple, but there is nothing (except extreme systematic problems in the US) that can possibly explain this large of a disparity, which is why it's still a valuable comparison.
I'm all for keeping in mind that statistics is a very complicated subject and that things are often not as simple as they seem, but let's not lose sight of the bigger picture.
It is literally impossible to check each and every case, and clean up the data, unless many people cooperate to do this big task. If the number of US killings was 10x higher than in the UK (instead of 5x), it might be useful to check the cases, to see if the method of counting would be different. However, we are looking at 1000x more instead of 5x, so the big picture will still be the same, even after cleaning up the data.
And so you see they still don't get it. They don't want real data. They want to be outraged. Let them make it worse. It's the only way they'll learn. "It can't be cleaned up." "It's too complicated" "The system is corrupt" They love their excuses to not tell the truth or even look for it. They just want you to believe what they believe. They are in a sense religious fanatics.

Reading a lot of posts here about anti-USA. Interesting. Can anyone here define what is an "American"? It seems like the implication is "white people". Every single nationality in the world is represented by the term "American". For example, I'm of Asian descent. My parents weren't born in the U.S. Currently, Asians make up about 6% of the US population. That's 21 million Asians living in America. Are we racist? Are we gun-loving, violent killers? At the heart of racism is hatred. Hatred finds a way to express itself in many forms: hating because of ethnicity, hating because of gender, hating because of wealth, hating because of education, etc. Can we educate ourselves and stop joining in what the media keeps shoveling?
