  • Leopold Silbermann was born on April 19, 1879 in Hernals, a district of Vienna to parents Salomon Silbermann and Dora Matschchigowar. He was of Polish nationality. The family moved to Paris in the mid 1880s. Leopold married Lucrèce Françoise Joséphine Blanc on May 15 1900 but the marriage was short-lived, a year later they divorced. In 1900 Leopold lived at 282 rue Saint Jacques. He moved often and in 1902 lived at 20 rue Saint Sébastien and in 1905 21 rue Bargues, then 8 rue des Lions in the Saint Paul district.
Eventually he moved to London and by 1916 he founded the publishing house with the clown Grock of "Silbermann & Grock". They published a great many scores, some of which will achieved great popularity such as "Abe my Boy". He wrote under the less-Germanic nom de plume as "Louis Silberman" presumably as a response to anti-German sentiments prevalent as a result of WW!.
At least six song albums of collected works were issued together with stylish period dance and piano solo music. The music publishing house catered firmly for the late musichall and comic variety theatre songs market. At the Grock clown theatre performances in London the music of "Silberman and Grock" publishers was extensively utilised. It is light, fun, well written generic music of its time and is completely up-to-date with the latest syncopated influences and early jazz. The sparkling comic lyrics were frequently provided by 1920s period comedy song writers Rule, Holt and McGhee. He also published material written by comedian Billy Merson and Elvan Hedges (The Hedges Brothers and Jacobson)
Grock left the UK to further his clowning career in 1923 and Silberman reverted to being a sole publisher. A short-lived agency publishing office was established in New York in the 1920s with the aim being to publish Silbermann plus material from France. Another London-based partnership as "Silberman And Solloway" was formed in the later 1920s.
By the early 1930s Leopold continued his career as a music composer but had returned to Paris presumably to assist his aging parents who still lived there. He worked alongside famous artists such as Fredo Gardoni, Puig and F Peguri.
When the Nazis occupied France his work was restricted as he was Jewish. He was arrested as a part of the Europe-wide antisemitic genocide and deported to Auschwitz where he was murdered on 11th November 1942.
The recordings on this Channel were made in 2024 and are the first step towards a comprehensive audio retrospective look at the work of Silbermann. They have been recorded as instrumentals so as to give a clear impression of their musical world of a century earlier.
