I bought my Sangean ATS-818CS new back in the mid 90's. Still have it and I performed the tuning mod as you have. Never wanted to reverse it 🙂 The most recent repair was to replace a perished tape recorder belt. Still very happy with this unit.
@@terrym1979 Just out of a pack of mixed sized belts from my local electronics store Jaycar. Just so happened to have one that was the right fit in the pack.
Thanks for sharing this mod. I didn't cut the circuit board. Instead I simply used resoldering wick and remove the solder from the pad. Another thing I did was disconnect the black wire from the piezo.
Found mine years ago on eBay for $36 ppd. Powered up with the wrong brick for my old IBM ThinkPad R51 Blew it up. Found a mint Sangean ATS-818Cs for $42 ppd. summer of 2016 Only need the drive belts ( $6 assortment of 4 dozen, on eBay from China) Been fine ever since I DO use a $32 ppd. mint ATS-818 much of the time, and out doors. For FM DXing a jazz station from 45 miles away. WDCB 90.9... Best from the stoop across the street. Had my first RS DX-390 from around the Desert Storm era. $150 on sale, just after my 1949 Hallicrafters S-40a caught fire!!! The 390 got too humid in my bathroom, 2004... Diode blown. 73's J.C.
That is a huge improvement to the radio. Ok having a mute on broadcast bands for commercial stations but for everything else it is nothing short of annoying!
I need the belts for the cassette player on A Realistic DX-392. If anyone can help. I have no idea what the sizes are or how the are routed... it uses two belts I think.

Where did you get the belt.

Have had this radio over 20+ years and the mute was one of my frustrations tuning with this radio. Thanks for the info!

It is nice to see a video on the Sangean ATS-818 CS.
Dx392 is ok. Have 2 since the 90's, still in service. Thanks

Awesome, glad you found the mod info & it worked out for you. Enjoy the pleasant tuning experience!
Excellent outcome Peter... I don't know why anyone would think muting whilst tuning would be an advantage for the end user 🤪

For auto searching!
NEVER stops with this mod.
Think about it.

Good job. I wonder why someone decided the mute-when-tuning was a good idea. This is 100% better. 73 de Al, W2GZN.
I think the Sangean 818 CS is one of the best receivers ever made. That is my opinion.
Do you still have a wire on the antenna, or is that just from the whip?
Most of the time just off the whip. I think a longer wire would have helped.
Does it work also for Sangean ATS 818 ACS Silver?
I wouldn't know.
I wanted to risk, I opened my Sangean and cut the same circuit as in your video. It worked perfectly! Now this is tuning! thank you very much @@vk3ye
