Here he comes, here comes the healer Van the man bringing us into the mystic, curing our ills, easing worries, lighiting our load, making us smile making us dance to the music
and he was so grumpy at that concert, which btw. was broadcasted in stereo and live on TV...and his unforgettable remark "some are asking what I am doing on such a RocknRoll event and I'm wondering the same thing"....priceless.
He is a grumpy, little guy. I remember a press conference in Norway -88. A reporter who should have known better, asked Van the usual BS shit. He got answers as deserved, and in a usually grumpy manner. Result: The reporter slaughtered him in his newspaper the day after. "Asshole of the year". I met the reporter a few weeks after, and slaughtered him. Van did his part of the job: A fairly good concert, and the journalist didn't regarding checkingup. BTW: The concert I'm talking about was at Vossajazz, Norway 1988.
Van is a perfectionist, he has to depend on so many, to be right by his side, and you know what, they have such RESPECT for his totally unusual , all around masterful talent they rise to heights of their own talents, and it is what makes this a once in a lifetime musical formula that one, can't turn their heads and ears away from. Even the musicians can't take their eyes off Van, He gives them religion! No EGO here Sir, just pure musicianship, backed by a masterful talented LEADER who settles for nothing less then perfection, and works hardest for the band to sound it's best.
My favorite of all his concerts . Still..i never get tired of it . Especially Dweller on the Threshold . The energy is of it is wonderful ..better than the recordings.
The atmosphere of this show is unmatched, with one of the most active audiences. This is due to a setlist that doesn't leave you breathless. From the band, highlights include Pee Wee Ellis and especially the backing vocals, the true gems of the night. The best live recording of Van Morrison, even though I'm aware of other monumental concerts such as in Montreux, Astral Weeks Live album, at the Troubadour or Fillmore West.
Think I've viewed most all his concerts .. Everytime I'm like Okay , my favorite! But this one has All my favorites. One of your millions of fans. .... I love you! Thank You for Listening to this Universe ❤️
Morrison has mentioned in interviews that in his earlier years he embarked on a serious study of books that explored the true medical (and mental) effects of the healing powers that exist within certain specific types of music. I can just imagine being in a library, and avidly searching among the stacks is... Van the man?! :)
Love this concert. Always smile at the end when Van says ''If you're wondering what I'm doing performing at a rock and roll event, I'm wondering the same thing.'' I was lucky enough to see Van with this line up in Birmingham UK and it was superb. Gotta Love Van The Man.
Found this on the Rockpalast Archive site... Van Morrison will appear as second guest at the 10th Rockpalast-Festival on the 3rd and 4th of April. A longed-for wish of the staff is fulfilled with his obligation for this concert. Since the beginning of this program, Van Morrison has been at the top of the list. Van Morrison was born George Ivan Morrison in Belfast on the 31st of August, 1945. His mother was a jazz singer and his father had a large and choice record collection, including many rare American jazz and blues records. With this background, Van Morrison soon could play the saxophone, guitar, harmonica and piano. At the age of 15, he left school and played in different bands. His first experiences as a musician were gathered playing as a member of the 'Monarchs', among others, while on tour through Germany. In 1963, Morrison formed 'Them', a group which soon would become well-known with pieces like 'Here Comes The Night', 'Mystic Eyes', and 'Gloria'. In 1966, 'Them' disputed a USA tour which brought them with 'The Doors' and Captain Beefheart in 'Whiskey A GoGo' in Los Angeles for a month, and disturbed the group's union. In 1967, Van Morrison debuted as a solo artist. He released 'Brown-Eyed Girl', a song which was very popular in the USA. Shortly afterwards, Morrison had to start all over; his partner, Bert Berns, died. Sporadic appearances and tours followed. Finally, Van Morrison released 'Astral Weeks'; this album is a classic in rock music. Van Morrison recorded this album with the musicians from 'Modern Jazz Quartett'. With this combination, he was able to blend his voice with the arrangements and the music in such a way that he achieved an intensity which had been unknown to him before. The next steps were the forming of his own production company, which allowed him to work as his own producer, and the formation of his own group: 'Caledonia Soul Orchestra' - a big-band style group with integrated string musicians, that otherwise played at the Oakland Symphony Orchestra. In 1973, Van Morrison and CSO went on a US and European tour and made one of the greatest live LPs ever: 'It's Too Late To Stop Now'. His influences were also noticeable in the picking of a title for this tour. Along with his own compositions, he sang standards from, i.e., Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Willie Dixon. Later on, Van Morrison changed the 'Caledonia Soul Orchestra' to 'Caledonia Soul Express' (without the strings), so that finally, after some years, he could spontaneously gather a small group together to play. Van Morrison first started touring again in 1978. He still doesn't play often, but he has a solid group of musicians in the band, that, along with him, always guarantees great concerts. Van Morrison doesn't have much time for publicity. He is hard to get to and is reserved; most interviews are refused. His reason: "You can find what I have to say in my songs - I have nothing to add". He describes his art of writing as "Stream of Consciousness Writing", meaning, more or less: Not consciously write about a theme, but to release what is in him. Van Morrison is very reserved, in actions and gestures, at his concerts. Surely, when one looks a little closer at how he sings, in his own way, the texts a little differently at every appearance, one sees the tremendous strength exuded by this seemingly unmoving man. He is concentrating only on the music and his singing. When Morrison comes on-stage, he does not give the impression of a rock singer right off. Indeed, that changes as soon as he takes the mike. Then it's clear: Van Morrison is a one-of-a-kind singer. Van Morrison plays a fantastic, intense concert with encores. He says that he didn't know what he was looking for at a rock'n'roll concert, but his audience knew it. "The whole Rockpalast team drove to Amsterdam to see an appearance (from Morrison). Questioned after a rehearsal in Essen, his agent/manager answered: Very little will happen there. Van goes on-stage just to appear. So, we decided together to at least go and watch a little earlier. Sure enough, Morrison showed up at rehearsal. We now have a video of it which is now one of our most-loved home movies. Naturally, he rehearsed, but only numbers that he guaranteed he would not play in concert. But, he had fun and tried at least three versions of Buona Sera Senorina. The conversation in Amsterdam lasted a half hour. Morrison was interested. We talked about which videos should be shown before his appearance (he was very excited about Muddy Waters) and his expectations." "Thirteen countries are a lot. The thought of being able to play for so many people pleases me". Or: "Until now, I've only heard good things about the Rockpalast. I already believe that it will be a good concert". "Towards the end, the discussion went back and forth with descriptions about the Black Forest and southwestern Ireland. On this evening, Van Morrison was the opposite from what we all know about him. Two days later, he was once again the way all the stories describe him". From: 10 Jahre Rockpalast. What is Van Morrison actually doing ? Rockpalast Club Info 11 May, 1997 - Uwe Schmalz Van 'The Man'. Unconventional, odd, silly, unpredictable on-stage. At the Rockpalast Festival in 1982 in Essen hissing and begging, he led a sold-out Grugahalle quickly through the musical styles. And this, after Rick James warmed up the audience with great funk music and before the legendary Kinks blessed the impatiently waiting rock fans with 'Give The People What They Want'. A moving concert. A classic appearance. However, what is the 51 year-old northern Irishman doing since then? Van Morrison has remained true to his introverted style. Constantly on the lookout for encounters with the most different traditional music styles, he records with old giants like John Lee Hooker or newcomers like the Chieftains. He also released albums in which not the number of albums sold, but the atmosphere was most important. Records that breathe blues and soul into the living room, and to which candlelight then gives the proper glow. Highly praised concerts in mostly sold-out, mid-sized halls, and personal appearances, as recently at the Leverkusener Jazzfestival, alongside jazz greats such as Candy and Hans Dulffer, give evidence to his restlessness. Most recent music-listening tip: The new CD 'The Healing Game'. After his appereance at the Midem in Cannes on 26.01.1984, wich was recorded by Rockpalast, Van Morrison was third time guest at the Rockpalast Christmas Special 1998. Information and setlist can be found on the WDR Rockpalast Page, some Pictures are in the Picture archive of the Rockpalast Archiv! One year later he played at Loreley Open Air there are also Pictures in the archive. @@meemeelombard110 No problem . Really the incredible history begins late in 60's , after the recording of 'Brown Eyed Girl'' and his early success in the US with Them for the label Bang Records and his friend Bert Berns . Van after this recording tried to change his sound , but Bert didn't see things that way . He was owner Morrison's contract and he put Van on ice . Morrison continued making trouble for Berns , and Berns suffered a heart attack in a NY hotel room on dec.'67 . Van was there , and Bern's wife felt that the singer was directly responsible and she went out of her way to make his life a living hell . Berns had contact with mob gansters and part of the contract of Van belongs to the mob . Van had to get out of NYC , and this label tried to have him deported , Bert's former wife contacted inmigration services in order to put head on the singer . Van couldn't record new music or play concerts , and now his recording contract was in the hands of the mob , even a member of the mob smashed a guitar over Morrison's head one night he decided to pack up and move to Boston . Now he needed to buy himself out of his contract for 20,000 S (Warner Bros. Records paid the mafia) . Rather than give in and record Astral Weeks for Bang Records , Morrison went to a studio and cut 36 nonsense songs in one long session . The songs are completely ridiculous and sloppy , as an attemp at writting anything good to leave him free at all . The same Van relates this history , but the problems go on in the 70's . The interview with Van is available in Internet but I don't have any link . There was a jury process and more things than I can't remember . I hope it's enough to your curiosity , but I guess you thought I had to say something bad about Van or 70's ? Isn't so ? I love 70's .
Amazing show, van the man indeed! That cleaning Windows! Woo! Awesome band, great feel. Long time van fan and I'm sure I'll be for the rest of my days...with his lyrics tattooed on my arms and his spirit dancing with my soul. Amazing amazing amazing!!
Thx so much for posting this concert. Van Morrison musically is in a league of his own. I never tire of listening to him and have for years. He never ceases to amaze me. He just keeps getting better and better. He is still incredible at 69.
Pamela Mac Neil You are completely right that Van The Man is in a league of his own. This is also a very good concert, I have it since the eighties on cd, like some 200 other concert by the man. But I must also say that Van's concerts are not really consistent. If Van is in the mood, the concert is fantastic, but if he is not.... I saw him some 30 times and some concerts were really disgusting. Once he sung and played during 20 minutes and left the rest of the concert to his band. Another time he was completely drunk and he started yelling at the public, threw his microphone away and then started arguing with the members of the band. All in All I love Van, but I do not think I'l go to any concert anymore.
Freddy Buggenhout You're right about tossing a coin with his concerts, not knowing if you'll get to see Van the great musical artist performing or belligerant, angry Van who decides he doesn't have to give you his best performance and in fact does not have to even have to give you his time as he walks off stage. Concerts are out for me too, but I love Van and his music.. What's incredible about his concerts, is that people still turn out in droves to see him. The Guiness book of records wanted to see which musical artist, who was anounced to be coming at a certain venue, tickets sold out the fastest. Van won, I think it was a jazz venue. All tickets were sold in under 10 minutes. The wonderful thing about you tube is you get to see and hear Van from the age of 17, when he was with Them up to now at age 69/70. What an amazing journey!
I can never find the proper words to describe what his music makes me feel down in my heart. So many souls throughout the world have been touched by his profound music. I really feel grateful for having met him.
This was a TV show called "Rockpalast" that was broadcast from Germany all over Europe twice a year way back then. It would run late on Saturday nights until 4am or 5am in the morning, featuring three bands for each show. I saw this one when I was 17, been mesmerized by the guy ever since, just saw him in Cologne last week...
Hang in there Bluenote, getting old sucks! Van the Man has the healing touch. I play his songlist on my iPod and take long walks at my favorite sanctuary. Strong mind, strong body.... you can do it!!! (:-]
I put the cassette recorder by the TV that spring '82 at the age of 14 and it changed my musical perspective forever. I have included this concert as an inspiration in my bass playing ever since.
As a man born in 1984, I wasn't very familiar with Van Morrison's music (I knew maybe 3 or 4 songs, but that was about it.....). I have to say: incredible concert, very, very good show.
WOW...GREAT Concert, great selection of Songs, Rhythms, Instruments and their Players, Background Singers and Van Morrison, of course. I have to add the Audience is so enthusiastic, they must be stoked! I wish I had NOT missed this concert, so very good.
Saw him a couple of months after this at Glastonbury, then the year after in Bristol. This is like time travel for me. This was when I first encountered and fell head-over-heels for Van the Man's music. It still moves me more than any other to this day. Thank you so much for uploading.
Dito. After my first concert I had his albums on repeat play on my Walkman then ipod lol. The depth of his composition and soulful melodies meant they never grew old
All the words of love for Van are totally deserved, but what about that band? Several of them were with him for years, but Van has a desire for constant change (some of his phases I can take or leave...mainly leave, like skiffle, country or hoary old blues and soul standards). Those backing singers absolutely make these songs (they can also be heard on the Live at the Grand Opera House Belfast album - a wonderful live album, though frustratingly short, a single vinyl LP!)

To close the show with an amazing Scandinavia was priceless. Simple chords on the piano but so powerful and to think the very beginning of the synth period in music.

Berlin June 1983 Funkturm Open Air Concert 2h in Rain with umbrellas, will never forget, one of best live concert that I have ever Seen …
dweller on the threshold touches my very soul every time i hear it thx vm
I love this concert! Van’s music is healing and good for the soul!!!
This version of wavelength! Lovely
This show and Montreux 1990 are my favorites. Both are simply stunning.
Oh my God what a performer!!!!
Think I've viewed most all his concerts .. Everytime I'm like Okay , my favorite! But this one has All my favorites. One of your millions of fans. .... I love you! Thank You for Listening to this Universe ❤️
What a joy it is hear and see him live. His God-given gifts are on display spectacularly.
Love Van the Man and the Ban!!! Oh my good gracious Lord... if I only knew in 1982 what I don't know now...
MAN! I was writing when this started and boy, did it jerk my head around!! That John Allair on piano...And Vans so dang cute here too!!
Rockpalast Club Info 11 May, 1997 - Uwe Schmalz
Van 'The Man'.

Brilliant ... Van is at the peak of his voice and in peace with his mind because the seventies' , and this concert is a good proof of that . Amazin' .
Just curious what you mean by
" because the seventies"?
If you don't mind.
@@blackcrow7049 I didn't know these details. Bless you for sharing. ;-)
I saw him in 1990 and he played for two hours even if the rain started to pour halfway through. Total genius.
@@freddybuggenhout9350 Van Morrison is a backdrop of the 60’s and the 70 ‘s
Wat 'n man . Ek kry nie genoeg van sy musiek nie.
Hy is briljant
I can never find the proper words to describe what his music makes me feel down in my heart. So many souls throughout the world have been touched by his profound music. I really feel grateful for having met him.
This was a TV show called "Rockpalast" that was broadcast from Germany all over Europe twice a year way back then. It would run late on Saturday nights until 4am or 5am in the morning, featuring three bands for each show. I saw this one when I was 17, been mesmerized by the guy ever since, just saw him in Cologne last week...
Good info!. Thanks. Van Morrison is stellar..
I didn't know this great programming source. Bless you for sharing. ;-)
This opening Number Before Van arrives on the scene is fantastik. ... it got Everything to a good start..
Very healing...
MORE EXCITING THAN HEMORRHOIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT VERSIONS.OF. THE. CLASSICS ... ALL MY FAVS ...
Loving this show , how ace are those backing singers . This is all so sweet and soulful xxx
Hang in there Bluenote, getting old sucks! Van the Man has the healing touch. I play his songlist on my iPod and take long walks at my favorite sanctuary. Strong mind, strong body.... you can do it!!! (:-]
Amazing Van! So gifted
What a great concert! 🙋🧡
I put the cassette recorder by the TV that spring '82 at the age of 14 and it changed my musical perspective forever. I have included this concert as an inspiration in my bass playing ever since.
Well that was special. What a nice treat I stumbled across.
Thank you O.P.D.
Love love love....Thank God, for Van Morrison. Nourishing my soul for over 58 years. Love that ending song: SCANDINAVIA. A masterpiece.
As a man born in 1984, I wasn't very familiar with Van Morrison's music (I knew maybe 3 or 4 songs, but that was about it.....). I have to say: incredible concert, very, very good show.
Great soulful sound, music for everyone. Please come to the states after this pandemic Van so I can finally see you in concert!
No doubt you know he is suing the uK government over lockdown. The only musician I know standing up.
Some of the greatest music ever created from the heart a souls of true musicians.
Ich liebe deine Art zu singen und deine Stimme. Wow....mehr braucht es nicht ❤❤❤❤❤❤
WOW...GREAT Concert, great selection of Songs, Rhythms, Instruments and their Players, Background Singers and Van Morrison, of course. I have to add the Audience is so enthusiastic, they must be stoked! I wish I had NOT missed this concert, so very good.
Exposure to greatness is breathtaking ❤️
Loving this. Brilliant!
@George Ivan Morrison You are the best, Van! I was just listening to your collaboration with Eric and I was blown away by how good it sounds.
Van is without doubt the musician who can influence any mood I am in in a positive way. I have listened to his music since 1973.
Beste Musik überhaupt, nicht zu toppen ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
Thank you for sharing a great concert with me. It made my day. Van Morrison is indeed a treasure!

Best live version of this song ever!!!!!!!!!!
Which song?
Man! I love that first song! Can't imagine how great the rest of it will be! 🙋🧡
Let there be words that could qualify this genius performance!!!
Tolle Musik ! Verstehe wenig Englisch aber das ist wirklich ein Genialer Musiker !! 🙂💯👍
DAT IS HIJ ZEKER DE GROOTSTE!!!😄😅😎😎
The best version of "Help me" - ever! ♥️
The depth of his composition and soulful melodies meant they never grew old
Jelly!!!!
The church of Van Morrison.
Amen

JUST KEEP ON ROLLING VAN I WISH YOU MORE CREATIVE YEARS YOUR MUSIC IS TIMELESS
Thanks for sharing this. Brilliant. Van is the best songwriter of this generation.
Indeed - I haven't watched the whole thing yet but the vibe is awesome. The band is stripped down and tight.
On the non-distaff side of the musical trinity, it's always been Hank Sr, Sam Cooke, and Van. Thankfully, he's still with us. Had the pleasure of seeing him in NYC at the Beacon. Electric. This is excellent! Thank you to whoever posted this. Only thing missing, unless I missed it, is his version of Bobby Bland's "Ain't Nothing You Can Do." Treat yourselves to it.
hey hey bump thank you mr van into the music, the best
First time I saw Van live was with this line-up in the Gaiety Theatre Dublin later that same year (around October). It still ranks as one of, if not the greatest gigs I have ever been too. Transcendental. It ain't why, why, why - it just is! Rave on Mr. M.
Brilliant!!!
Van & his crew in rare form-his guitarist and backup singers are some of the best he's ever had.
Fantastic! Van at one of his peaks. Great band/back up vocalists/material. Beautiful Vision is a timeless album.
Well put. Van at one of his peaks …

To close the show with an amazing Scandinavia was priceless. Simple chords on the piano but so powerful and to think the very beginning of the synth period in music.
I remember this Rocknight. Recorded it all on a cassette tape. It turn in loop this concert RIP =:-) Maybe one of the reasons I started to play horn and in Brass section. Happy to see it again. What a great swing the 2 drummers gave this concert
