Ed Wood was the founding father of Indie cinerma. In the 1950s, American film making was more or less totally under the control of the studio system. If you weren't under contact to Louis B Meyer, Jack Warner etc. you couldn't make movies and if you were, your artistic vision was completely under their thumb. Ed Wood proved you could work outside the system
I agree with Ed Wood being upbeat and hyper active but it wasn't a childish character. For that matter none of Depp's characters are. That's what make him great. He's almost artistic in making such otherworldly roles, that could've been mere caricatures or self-indulgent vanity creations with other or lesser actors, as real and relatable personas. His performance in Ed Wood is dramatic but uniquely so as always.
Mr. Depp doesn't just "play" a part...he takes his character, Consumes them whole, and then TRANSFORMS himself into that character. The result is something magical.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was on last night (not one of my favourite movies) as I was flicking through the channels and I said, "Let's watch Ed Wood." :D
I love Edward Woods movies as much as I love Bela Lugosi, Vampira and Tim Burton. Tim did a real tribute to him and very accurate. Beautiful. And Johnny Depp was still a good actor. Nice
OVERLOOK MUSIC Just a mismatch of styles. Depp is great but he's not really known as a dialogue driven actor. There's not really a Tarantino character I could see Depp playing. I'd still watch though
I always thought it was ironic of how the film ED WOOD happened to be more critically/ financially successful than any of Ed Woods actual movie when they were first made
Love to see him act and see the response from Burton on set, something you rarely get to see the communication and feedback between director and actor. Depp is brilliant because he is so animated yet subtle and focused on the character he is playing, I think small details are what really make a portrayal convincing and he gets it spot on. Johnny still hasnt worked with Tarantino, something id love to see being a huge fan of both, or maybe he has, someone correct me if im wrong?
Johnny Depp "gets" Ed Wood... I knew that. Nice acknowledgement of Wood's influence on David Lynch. " 'Ed Wood' is the movie Ed Wood would have made if he'd had talent, and a budget." --Roger Ebert (I think)
Siskel and Ebert praised Depp's performance in "Ed Wood". Saying he found the "perfect balance" in his portrayal. "Cheeful, decent, and slightly weird".
'I Would love to work with Tarantino'. Indeed, with all the crap Johnny Depp has been through, that director would be perfectly suited to tell that story
"Growing up that universal feeling of being the underdog" Johnny you're cool and all but I'm calling BS on that lol I'd love to be the underdog if it meant I looked like that.
Johnny talking about Ed Wood being a "great" filmmaker must be facetious. He's comparing him to David Lynch? John, don't you know the difference there is that Ed did the things he did because that was basically the limit of his talent. His budgets were low, but his actual talent was even less so. I love him for that, but it's true. David, on the other hand, has proven his film making talent on a number of great films. When David does a tight shot on an ear, as you say, it's an artistic choice that propels the story and has some narrative meaning to the film. When Ed did those things it was also an artistic choice, but never ever made any sense. Just listen to the dialogue in Ed Wood scripts. Sometimes they make absolutely no sense at all, but clearly, they were intended to. That's the real difference. The genius isn't intentional.
he can't help the accent thing he has FAS (Foreign Accent Syndrome). And as for the "great actor" his acting skills haven't changed lmao and he continues to choose odd characters to portray.... u don't think Jack Sparrow was a great character choice by him?
Ah nearing the end of when Depp & Burton were magical. Now bloated corporate hacks sadly turning out dreck repeatedly. So very sad. The time Depp was magic-Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissorhands, Cry-Baby, Benny & Joon etc. He was good in Sweeney Todd & that Michael Mann gangster film recently but that's only 2 out of many pieces of garbage.
Johnny, if you really believed what you said, then you would have seen that the "ESTATE OF TIMOTHY FARRELL" would have been paid when you made the film "ED WOOD". But alas you are full of BULL!!! Timothy Farrell was the star of Glen or Glenda and several other Ed Wood Films and is my late father.
2:18 wow what a fucken genius this man is like holy shit I've never thought about it that way what is normal, society is bad, johnny depp is a prophet of God. Give me a fucken break smh
Really Depp? Really? He was a GREAT filmmaker? All his movies are good for are to be mocked by MST3K or Rifftrax, because lets be honest - they are utter garbage!
Depp seems like the most chill dude but his characters have so much energy
But the character’s energy comes naturally so I guess he holds it back in real life, perhaps.
Great observation
its just funny seeing a director directing an actor portraying a director.
Johnny: "Cut. Print. That's a wrap."
Burton: "Cut!"
Shootingception

Depp really should have been nominated for an Oscar for Ed Wood.
So should the writers and Burton!

Both of those are joooos
whats also funny is seeing this very quite, serious sounding Johnny Depp after portaying ubeat, almost hyperactive childish characters.
Look at him in Ed Wood and then Gilbert Grape from around the same time.
It’s insane that the same guy played both parts.
Similarly, look at him in Arizona Dream & then in the alternate ending for it

I love how to defend a character as reviled as Ed Wood. I feel very proud of him
I loooove that man, he makes every day in my life a better day.
Very sad
no matter what Johnny looks like nowadays he will always be cool as fuck
He’s just such an amazing actor phenomenal
Back when Johnny Deep dressed like a normal person
and spoke like a normal person
yes hes as strange as ed was
You just proved his point around 2:18
John Dough exactlyyy bc he’s johnny Depp period
Johnny Depp: people can be really judgmental.
I believe this movie created "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Johnny". Everytime he smiles or even acts in this movie it's like I see Willy Wonka
Melda Tulum true same here
Johnny said in an interview that he came up with his Wonka thinking of how George Bush would act stoned out lmao
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was on last night (not one of my favourite movies) as I was flicking through the channels and I said, "Let's watch Ed Wood." :D
its almost the same character
DEPP SHOULD OF WON A OCSAR FOR ED WOOD
And 'The Libertine'
Yes!!💙💙
He should have won NUMEROUS Oscars.
have*
A director (Tim Burton) telling someone (Johnny Depp) how to direct. That's funny!! haha I guess it's confusing to film a movie within a movie
I love how Tim Burton was laughing when he said "and cut"
he is so sweet!
i love his voice and i love him!XD
johnny forever!
I love Edward Woods movies as much as I love Bela Lugosi, Vampira and Tim Burton. Tim did a real tribute to him and very accurate. Beautiful. And Johnny Depp was still a good actor. Nice
Why in the hell has Johnny Depp not worked with Quentin Tarantino yet?
OVERLOOK MUSIC Just a mismatch of styles. Depp is great but he's not really known as a dialogue driven actor. There's not really a Tarantino character I could see Depp playing. I'd still watch though
Bob Bobby Did you see Once upon of time in Mexico? Lots of dialogue directed by Tarantino best friend Robert Rodriguez
That’s what I’m Sayinggggg
Or Lynch. Wish he would make more pictures.
YOU tell us, Jesus Christ...!
Always nice to hear Johnny Depp speaking about movies.
I always thought it was ironic of how the film ED WOOD happened to be more critically/ financially successful than any of Ed Woods actual movie when they were first made
Johnny Depp ❤ I would have loved to kick it with Ed. Ed, I wish you were here. This is for you.
Ed Wood had Lela Lugosi perform in Glen or Glenda...and that performance was magnificent!
Ed Wood was years ahead of his time!
Hahahahah he played Ed so wonderful, every time I see it I always laugh my ass off x)

He should have gotten oscar for so many movie but didnt got any recognition.let me clear 1 thing the Oscar's dont deserve him
Love you Johnny ❤️❤️❤️
1:28 filmception !
one of my favorite films of all time....Landau was magnificent.
My fave Burton film
Siskel and Ebert praised Depp's performance in "Ed Wood". Saying he found the "perfect balance" in his portrayal.
"Cheeful, decent, and slightly weird".
Oh man... Imagine Johnny Depp and Quentin Tarantino!?!?!?
I know you are happy you have a beautiful life with your lady I wish I was that happy like you.
That was perfect !
Tim was so...young!
So was Johnny, only 30/31 years old.
Johnny and Quentin Tarantino
'I Would love to work with Tarantino'.
Indeed, with all the crap Johnny Depp has been through, that director would be perfectly suited to tell that story
Now I see where homeboy from Fargo got his character from
still his best performance.. should've won the Oscar
what separates an Ed Wood film from all others is the absolute goofy dialogue..lol
This is a great film!
💜💜💜💜💜
He's seen mike lee's "Naked" a hundred time...
Rofl! Oops
Deadman was awesome,Don Juan Demarco was cool. All his movies are good.
Hyperbole.
Johnnyyyyyyy
Yes depp yes
Quentin obviously doesn’t want Depp in his film. I’m not a Great fan of Quentin. His film are all about “him” if you look closely.
Too bad he still hasn't worked with Mike Leigh or Quentin Tarantino.
How old was he there ? He looks like a better version of Leonardo DiCaprio
I'm sorry I'm very late with my reaction, but I think he was 30/31 here as Ed Wood came out in 1994 and he was born in June 1963.
Almost 30-years later, and he never got a chance to work with Tarantino.
1:12 Whoa! A b roll within a b roll!
looks like he's wearing womens sunglasses. Guess that Ed character was hard to shake off
nate knight and that angora fur
They may be garbage, but you have to respect eh man for neer giving up.
Aiy to beh sure!
He reminds me of Dean from Iron Giant!
Does anyone know where this interview was shot? It looks like he's sitting on the east side of Lake Washington with Seattle behind him. Maybe not.
please, someone knows what kind of this sunglass... what brand, type, whatever... it's awesome!!!
Tarantino is on his last before he rides off into the sunset! Please Quentin! Cast Johnny!
Johnny Depp talks about Ed "One-Take Wonder" Wood∴
lisa marie is suuuuuch a hottie in this film lol
Johnny Depp is Ed wood!!!
I remember Ed Wood's widow back in 94 saying she couldn't believe how much alike Depp and Wood looked.
I find it ironic that they did several takes to portray a director that only did one ☝️ take
hehe ppl... pull the strings! xD
Please QT, please cast Johnny if you're calling it quits after ten films.
"Growing up that universal feeling of being the underdog" Johnny you're cool and all but I'm calling BS on that lol I'd love to be the underdog if it meant I looked like that.
That's vain.
funny movie!!
So who's the second British filmmaker that he's talking about? :P
watched this while high... didnt know what half the movie was about
I was so faded when i saw it got transported into it

What Tarantino are waiting for casting Depp?? I wish for his last movie…
I wonder why Johnny Depp did not director in real life. I be like I want to this for real.
He directed & starred in The Brave. Also co-wrote the screenplay
Ed Wood’s movies were terrible but not the worst.
Johnny's great. Ed was ... weird.
Only Martin Landau was outstanding in Ed wood .
He was totally ripping off jon lovitz.just compare the two.and now he's ripping off adam ant.cmon man.

The widow of Ed Wood said he was identical... so...
