I definitely did! It just make sense to do so. I'm the 4th archetype so it doesn't make sense for me to do for example go for double legs often cause most guys are bigger and heavier than me. There are strategies that are more ad hoc for me. Great video Chasen!
As a 6ft 190lb guy, it often feels like im a jack of all trades master of none. I'm the smallest of the big guys and the biggest of the small guys. Big guys force me to work my guard and the small guys force me into passing which seems like backward etiquette to me. But in my experience big guys stand and small guys sit. I'm not complaining about any of this but I think it makes it more difficult to specialize against someone who's body type was made for that particular game.
Actually no, for me there is not one game that answers everything. If I roll with one super heavy fat guy, I know he will try to crush me under his weight, I won't fight the same way that I fight with one energetic thin guy. The same way I adapt acccording to the distance as well. You cannot do only one guard and expect everything to resolve around it, I think.
As a smaller guy, once someone is getting into 40+lbs bigger then I’ll mostly sit to guard, because if I don’t know them/they’re new I don’t wanna mess around with that much weight, if it’s someone who’s experienced then they’re probably gonna take me down anyway so I might as well give guard a try
Yes! In RPGs certain races have better stats for different classes. If you want to be competitive it's best to min/max based on the class you're playing. But it might get a little boring sticking to the meta because you're just playing to win instead of really enjoying and learning all aspects of the game.
I am a 41 yo 250 white belt that wrestled year around thru college, the purple and blue belts I roll with are impressed with the speed which I can pass. That being said I prefer to work from positions where I am not crushing the smaller partners and that I am not comfortable in because I wish to improve. I love open guard with double sleeve and sleeve and collar probably because it is so different from what I am comfortable with. Being uncomfortable excites me because it gives me something to think about all week until my next roll!
I'm 43 230 or 35 lbs like 6 foot 2 but my legs are large I'm not flexible at all. I also dont like crushing sm as ller people. Lol you sound like me dude. I've been doing some judo the bjj guys come into the dojo 3 times a week. I'm definitely better at judo but that's not saying much since I feel like I'm awful at jj. I'm also very defensive and not as aggressive as most lol
166cm 82 kg guy reporting in (5'6" 172lb). Need to learn a short mans open guard and need tips other than "learn butterfly". Keep in mind im a hobby powerlifter so Im quite strong, but slow.
45 years old with a bad back (industrial accident about 15 years ago) limits low back and hip movement. 5’11’ 210lbs with orangutan arms. My game is survival at all cost, closed guard, reach out and pull you in. Fight for under hooks. Lock down. New blue bet still working on safe position but now starting to work on better escapes.
I am so glad I watched this video! I always thought that I "suck" at closed guard when in reality I may not be able to do it very well based on body type. I'll keep working on it though! It's just nice to know I am not the only one
I really like this breakdown by body type, very accurate. And excellent point to not specialize too early, fundamentals are key both offensively and defensively.
This video made me feel good. I'm a shorter/stockier guy and I just started jiu-jitsu. I was getting kind of disheartened because I thought that I wouldnt have any advantages compared to taller and lankier individuals. It's good to know that my body type does have a chance. Thank you. 😊😊
Unfortunately I am a 5'11 200+ pound dude and my game is usually to smesh. I do not do speedy stuff or any triangles or closed guard. My usual offensive style is to pin the legs or get the two legs and climb up. Very predictable I know. Defence wise it is half guard. I am a simple creature.
Just started a couple montha back and this does align with what I have seen. Being the bigger guy in the gym, I really struggle when I am on my back especially against the faster technical fighters.
37, 6'1 175, I noticed I use to love the triangle but now it's just a set up for armbar or omaplatha because I have to be more technical because of my long legs sometimes I have to compensate as well for the arm triangle. But I was playing closed guard a lot, spider, laso. I'm now exploring attacks from side control/north south and working on my pressure, weight distribution, and transitional movements
Same here but 5'11. It's funny the inevitable switch from triangle to Armbar. I would also hit triangles from everywhere but noticed slowly over time switching to armbars.
I do appreciate this. As a smaller thinner guy I’ve naturally gravitated towards the butterfly guard and chasing the back. But i think I will do more x and de la riva research because yeah, I’m always under big people.
5.8ft - 70kg - skinny frame - earlier I relied a lot on speed and scrambles. I used to be a closed guard player when I was a white and blue belt, but eventually found little success for subs after people become blue belts or higher. Built the game around Marcelo Garcia as back attack high percentage sub. Don't try too much arm in chokes like Darce or andaconda, guard pass to arm triangle from top is good. Don't rely on forcing kimura or americana - Kimura grip is good thou to transition to back rather than kimura subs. Worked more like Lucas Lipri shine to shine sweeps, butterfly sweeps, transitions to x guard sweep. Never got into dela riva. guard passing is more active, but the knee slide, or leg weave still works well, using my head more to pin them, but not much of a bodylock pressure passer. Not active enough to be a toreundo passer either. takedowns are still double leg, or single leg due to being very basic but also I can shoot lower than taller guys. Eventually will have to change them game due to being closer to my 40s, may just pack on weight and just be a fat pressure passer with gi chokes.
I’m 6’0” 170 lbs with long limbs and a slighter build. Despite my weight, I think I’m often looked at as a lanky guard player…the total opposite is true. I train at a small MMA gym filled with former wrestlers with active amateur and professional fighters, so I get plenty of mat time with them. It’s all smesh, wrestle up, and “just stand up”. I miss out on training the fancier BJJ-specific guards and submissions with significant volume, but I can work for a kimura or a D’Arce/guillotine/anaconda from a lot of different positions. While I don’t fight, it’s also nice to get the occasional friendly reality check tap when I’m on bottom to remind me that I could be getting wailed on if strikes were in the mix. It’s definitely a unique environment, but it’s my favorite place I’ve trained. :)
I've always been looking for a video like this! I'm 4th stripe white belt 5'5 ~130 lbs 23 yo I'm strong for my size i guess and legs are short but I can be very fast (it sucks when I gas quick sometimes lol) and i always wanted a video explaining how I can use my size to my advantage. Turns out you're right what you said in the beginning where I would naturally start to develop my style based on what works and what doesn't bc to my surprise my style is basically exactly as you described lol I'm pretty much forced to attack every time (get to mount or the back asap)bc i don't have the luxury of sitting around in guard. My guard retention is good from open guard but terrible in closed guard -it's easy for the bigger guys to just pry me open. (Pause) I never really thought of trying butterfly as a main tactic I tried it very early on as a no stripe but I couldn't really get the hang of it. Haven't really used it much as it isn't taught in our fundamentals classes but I'll definitely look into it more now! I've recently realized armbars are something i can easily catch people with sometimes but my brain isn't used to the angles from bottom like that yet 💀 Sometimes i get myself in weird positions under big guys and end up doing some Craig Jones shit by accident cause I'm so flexible bottom side control to back take kinda shit Thank you for the video coach
I’m a 5’8 185 pound purple belt. I’m aware of what is going to work for my body type, but this stuff is way more important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of my partners.
As a leggy 6 foot 154 lb guy, i agree with your tall thin points. Some other things i notice comparing my build to other people of similar height and weight is the width of your shoulders and hips, neck length, and wrist circumference to me all seem to make a difference in what i can pull off vs what someone else can. Smaller wrist are easier to grip, longer necks are easier to choke, narrow shoulders are easier to head and arm choke (darce, triangle, etc), narrow hips are easier to get hooks in for back control. Short neck, thick wrists, and wide hips and shoulders seem to be an advantage across the board to me, but i could be wrong.
6'4" and apprx 300 lbs. I just made blue belt last December. I'm stronger than pretty much anyone in my gym, and if I actually had any technique I might do OK vs. some of these other people. It's not that I don't know stuff, it's just integrating things into my game and figuring it out that's the challenge. I don't know why you say most big guys don't have flexibility; I'm one of the most flexible people in my gym. I'm really quick for someone my size, but that's still less fast than most others there. I'm still building my game. My bottom game isn't great; mostly I'll try closed guard or half guard (especially lockdown). I'm all about trying to get around the other guy to take his back for a choke, or sweep. Top game isn't bad. I can break most people's closed guard, not too bad against half-guard, open guard gives me more problems than most. If I can get into kesa I can cook you there, maybe go to side control. Decent kimura and arm bar from side, or I can go gift wrap to take your back. My north/south chokes aren't horrible either, but they could use a lot of work.
I'm 6'1" at 290lbs but people have told me that I look like I'd weigh 230-240lbs. I'm a 3-stripe blue belt training almost 7 years total. Due to being a bigger guy that hated feeling helpless/stuck while on my back against other big guys, I have purposely learned to play off my back and seem to favor butterfly guard, half guard/deep half, and have been dipping my toes into single leg x. I usually try to engage in sweeps to earn my way to top positions. I do tend to do head and arm triangle chokes as well as kimuras but have begun to work on arm bars and straight ankle locks/toe holds.
I’m 5’6 200 lbs former yoga instructor and rugby player. So I’m flexible but also fast and athletic. I am a white belt who only has 8 months experience. I’m definitely no where near specializing and appreciate this insight to just think about in the future.
23 yr old 5'11 140 pound purple belt. I've been training for around 7 years now. I tend to be the smallest guy in my gym. I utilize alot of x guard, tripod sweeps, triangle chokes, anaconda chokes and head and arm chokes. Because of my wieght I tend to end up on bottom most of the time. Because of this I've become very crafty with escapes and leg pummbling. My downfall is when someone gets past my knees. Once my opponents start getting up in the 165+ range no matter what I do it feels like the weight of the world is preventing me from getting up. For the past 2 years I've really been working on my top pressure and control and have found that a floaty style has been the only thing that seems to be effective.
6ft 265lbs here, i'm a short and very stocky guy and the thing that has helped my skillset most recently is playing bottom, instead of my most effective game which is top deep water pressure, this is mostly good to do against people that i have a size advantage over to me, as it gives me more leeway to practice, doing this has won me competitions too, as i'm able to sweep bad positions better generally than most heavyweights, as they rely on the "who lands on top wins", i want to have an advantage over the people i compete against by improving my weakest area where they do not
Wow I’ve been looking for answers to this exact question! Definitely subscribing. I’m 5’8, 180 lbs. I’ve realized that I’m more of a pressure player. But lately I’ve been trying to slow down my pace and working on my technique instead of using athleticism. I start by being a bottom player and using a sweep to establish top position. Then work to minimize spacing then submitting. One thing is everyone I go up against, they also like to start off at the bottom. I noticed when this happens I go into my normal mode of attacking with pressure. Do you know what I can do to continue to work my bottom game and do you have any tips for my body type?
6’3 285lb 40!l year former heavyweight wrestler turn strongman / powertlifter. White belt if I can roll for 5 minutes and not die I’m happy lol. I still enjoy standing game. Kimura / chokes are my go to for now while maintaining top control.
Pegged me 😂 5'10" 135lbs, and lanky af, I've liked pulling a high closed guard, threatening triangles, platas, arm sweeps, and the odd arm bar. Did roll with one guy that could break a triangle by flexing, though. It... wasn't a good time. The terror when he got a hold of my wrist was palpable.
what am i'm 5 11, and 170 lb and have long hands but meduim legs i sttruggle to get close guard around thick heavyweights 260 lb(also i'm a pretty strong bear wrestler with heavy weights cz I'm a hybrid athlete i do calisthenics and powerlifting, almost in the elite category, and i do mma on the side)
6’ 240lbs. Absolutely accurate: my favorite sub is the head and arm and I have a slow grinding game. I did learn early to be comfortable on my back, but it’s only to get to a point where I can sweep and get to top position. Other than leg locks, I can’t think of a sub I’ve gotten from bottom in a long time 😂
I'm a short and stocky guy in my early 30s white belt. My coach pulled me aside once during a class and basically gave me a free 1 on 1 class all on half guard. It made a huge difference from being smashed by most white belts to sweeping and taking the backs of all white belts and some blues. It got to a point where I'd catch someone in half guard and they'd say "da#$it!" Haha. I stopped when my gym closed during Corona but I'd like to get back in it. 2 lessons learned - body types play a big role in determining successful positioning. -even at white belt 1 on 1 classes can do a lot for you fast.
5'7 157lbs Average athletic build. I favor half guard for sweeping, body lock passes, and I probably attack kimuras the most. I don't know if I have made a game for my body type. I just use techniques that click.
As a big guy I am certainly limited on what I can do but I have made it a priority to play from the bottom so when I sweep or get up I can smash for the rest of the round 😂
I'm 6'4" and 180lbs. I abuse my lankiness without thinking. I don't prioritize body type, but I'm not fighting nature. Favorites: Sub - triangle Sweep - balloon Pass - longstep There's a lot of moves with dumb labels, like the Kimura being a "big man" move. Kimuras from triangles take no strength. Their posture is broken, they can't hide their arm, and it's isolated. The fundamentals can be adapted to any style or build. Body type is a factor, but it shouldn't be the focus of your game. Goals should be what your game is based on. My standup game is chains of throws that end in side control. The goal is to bypass the guard. My build doesn't affect the goal, and ouchi gari, a good move for my build, doesn't suit my goal.
5’8 205 power lifter and wrestler before I came to bjj, I’m now a 1 stripe blue belt and my game is pressure pass and straight arm attacks/ head arm chokes. I still practice and embrace closed guard and triangles etc but it’s not my game plan because tbh these stubby legs ain’t meant for buggy chokes and triangles 😂
I just started. Im 6ft and 235lbs. First thing i was told was that I was probably going to be slow and steady grapper with tight control. Right now im just focused on not injuring anyone. From what i have seen online, big burly white belts are the root of all injuries in bjj 😂
I'm 6'2" and around 200 lbs. I used to be a guy who played guard when I was competing strickly BJJ, once I started MMA, I changed my BJJ and grappling strategy in general to be more takedown oriented and work from top
I’m 5’8 180 pounds and I have picked a Carlson Gracie type game but I use open guard a lot along with wrestling and Greco. I wanna stay on top and smash and always staying moving. I’ve been training for two years just got my blue belt. Wrestling is helping me a lot most the guys I train with are 210-260 and 5’11-6’8 so I don’t get much of a chance to use closed guard or triangles. I play a lot of mount and back mount most of the time . I like to stick with a smashing grinding methodical game and stay on top.
I’m a new white belt and I fit into that category of around 180 and about 6’. I have already begun to notice some advantage with having long legs. I think even longer than the average but it’s good to know I can be very versatile.
Im a hybrid of tall and thin + tall and thick. I love going for double legs and singles, and I love being on mount trying to get head and arm triangles. However I also love d’arce chokes and playing guard to go for triangles. Also armbars are hard due to long legs. Excellent video 👍
47 yrs old. 5'10, 197 lbs. Being 2.4 years into grappling, with no wrestling experience. Its definitely a bit rough learning how to change style, being used to 220 lbs. The strength loss makes it tougher with guys in heavyweight.
Im a 6 foot 190 pound guy with relatively short limbs and a long torso, my game is agressive pressure top position and back attack. Favourite subs are arm triangle, ezekiel and rear naked
I enjoyed this video. I have been also thinking a lot about this after watching keenan but now with your videos. It would be great if you can expand with a) Tournament models like using examples from the modern champions from each weight cat and their own bodytype difference even if they fight on the sam bracket. b) examples for crossed strategies like Long - tall vs Short- thick what to look for and details. thanks just suscribed.
I’m 40 years old, 5’9 and 170 pounds, been training for about 2 years. Tall, lean guys are a real problem for me. I’m still trying to develop a game, and it’s a real challenge but it’s enjoyable. Honestly the only consistent subs I seem to land are Kimuras and Arm Bars, a guillotine here and there. Hoping to get it figured out!
I think there is definitely a difference in how people will develop their games depending upon body type... but I think people limit their games themselves because of faulty beliefs about themselves, more so than their actual physical abilities will limit them. Just like you said, it's "performance based" . People get in the habit of continuing to use what made them "win" in class, and that often slows peoples ability to learn as well as limits the expansion of their game. Time and effort should absolutely be invested in learning to properly do as many different types of "moves" as possible, especially at blue belt and purple belt. Most of the time people think they can't do something due to their body type, it's really because they're doing it wrong (within reason). For instance if someone says they can't get their foot or knee in the spot they want, they often blame it on not being flexible enough, when is reality it's because they did not shift their hips to the proper position to accomplish the task.
5’10 220 here, I’m very explosive, hard to take down/hold down but my bottom game needs a lot of work, only bottom position I feel good in is half guard
When I did bjj when I was younger at 18 5’8 120 pounds I had a top game based on pinning especially from side control and scarf hold bc I had to pin people to not get bucked off before any real offense. Big knee shield fan which integrated into a leglock game. Only subs I went for were chokes and leglocks bc I was too weak to get a good arm lock on a big dude. People struggle to muscle out of chokes and leglocks bc you can’t really work out your ankles. I only made it to blue belt though so I never quite made it out of the unskilled category.
@@ChasenHill nah, I just fell out of love with it so after I got my rotator cuff ripped I decided to just stop bc more injuries accumulating is probable and I wasn’t having fun anymore. This was about 4 years ago and I feel that I got what I wanted out of it. Learned enough that it helped me in some non sporting situations and I’m satisfied with leaving it at that to pursue other hobbies. Highly recommend pins though because that’s what you use to restrain people when you don’t wanna light them up standing. Excellent for that medium level aggression
Honestly as a 6 foot 230-245 lb dude(summer exercise helps 😂) blue belt with a congenital spinal fusion I’ve spent a lot of time trying to survive/escape from the bottom of multiple positions. On top positions I know my weight has an advantage and feel it but on the bottom I feel it works the opposite and causes me to have to work more.
I’m kinda in the middle, body type-wise. 5 10, 190 lbs with longish limbs. my game is highly skewed towards playing tight and slow, half guard top and bottom for neutral game, mount for offense. I lift weights a lot, so I’m pretty strong for my size, which helps with my approach. I have decent flexibility and speed but I think isometric strength is what my game is built around.
My first few scrambles doesn't matter if blue purple or brown and black belt . I always end up in position where i can grab legs or chockes . So that's how i start my plan .
Hi, Chasen, you are almost my exact body size and type. I'm 5'4, 155-160. What is your style? What do you play most when playing your "A" game? By the way, I'm a mid-level blue belt. I still experiment with everything and try not to narrow things down too much since I'm still not deeply experienced. I mostly play half-guard and when on top tend to gravitate towards the North-South position where I've been more able to control larger opponents.
Welcome to the tree stump club! On the bottom, I personally play a lot of open guard, specifically butterfly. I love getting sweeps and backtakes. Funny enough, my main attack now is triangles from the bottom. Top, I play mount. Once you learn to control and maintain it, the attacks that favor guys our size who are spider monkeys and allow us to take backs. You'll get rolled a lot in the beginning, but in the long term, it's more favorable than side mount. Side mount will always favor those with more mass, both offensively and defensively.
Im 5'4 150lbs as well. White belt who just started. Im also trying to figure out what style I should do because I always get rolled and tossedaround but bigger guys lol
@@ChasenHilli do still get rolled around a lot when I get to mount 😭 maintaining it is so hard when you're so light (130 lbs) man I remember a year ago when I was like 120 it was even worse. Any tips for staying heavy on top? Usually when I get to mount they usually try to sweep me and end up giving me their back but it would be nice to keep it
I’m 6’4 185 and a three stripe white belt rn, I noticed I have a good guard/triangles and have lots of options in front headlock and back control. But I’ve realized my long legs are vulnerable to leg locks and I’m not top heavy at all from side control
@@ChasenHill 100%/300% -I fatigue you. -I rest me. -I make you not want to try that move next time, even if it worked. I just started BJJ. Once I stopped rolling to my stomach, I gravitated towards playing off my back. I am used to being smashed/constricted/suffocated, but it has never been acceptable(in playing) to use my legs as a shield with anyone but children. Bottom seems to be the real active resting. I don’t know though, I really like the guys at my gym and they seem like the type who would allow me to develop skills without demoralizing me.
LOL I am the spark plug guy. I am super short but solid. I play a lot of closed guard to sweeps though. I do have a pretty good open guard. I like to smash pass and use the arm triangle and arm locks as well as leg locks. All were pretty hilariously true.
Great video! What do you think about shoving or pushing as a double leg or songle leg defence. Ive played with this in class with some success againg some fairly seasoned wrestlers. They didnt get upset or nothin. It sounds very rugby like but whatever lol
The shoving reminds me of an early sprawl. You can stuff a shot with your head, with your hands, and with a full sprawl. Erik Paulson has a good video on it.
There's nothing wrong with a good shove every now and then, as long as it's for a purpose and not out of desperation. I've seen shoving to just shove (that's a weird statement) turn into many escalated altercations that are dumb for gym training.
I am avatar 4. 5'9 around 200lbs. I love butterfly guard, shin to shin, double legs, and attacking from side control. At 39, I am not speedy, but I can control my weight to feel extra heavy to smother.
Interesting - not sure exactly which category I fall into: 5’9” 190 lbs (57 year old 3 stripe purple if that makes any difference 😂)…I try to model my game a bit after guys with similar body types like Saulo Ribeiro.
@@ChasenHill He is a monster, and so much more technical than some people give him credit for. Looks like he’s just smashing opponents with his strength, but it’s mostly very clever positioning for maximum leverage. I’ve learned a number of things from his book JJ University like the Stepover Choke, which I use all the time, Knee on Belly to Arm Triangle, Halfguard passes from videos, etc. He’s very detailed in his teaching. Anybody else I could emulate w/ my body type besides Rickson?!
5’7 185 pounds I definitely under stand the short big guy game. I’m not fast like other short guys so I try and keep the rolls slow and tight it works for me 😅
I have the legs of a heavyweight and the upper body of a lightweight (I do a lot of bicycling) and I’ve found that it makes me very awkward to sweep when I’m in someone’s guard. A downside of that body type though is that I have a hard time holding on to top side control unless I either commit my head very far forward or spin around to north south
When i trained jiu jitsu at 16yo a weighted around 60kg at 5'6 and was way too flexible and fast. I stopped training and eventually went into bodybuilding. Now i'm 30yo at 5'7 and 80kg and not flexible at all and my game just don't work anymore, now i'm learning almost everything from scratch
Don’t know him but bruh already has a personal vendetta against me! Good topic. I do try to watch more guys that fit my frame, the likes of Craig Jones and Keenan Cornelius lately. Enjoying to try getting weird angles from z guard, pissing people off with lapels. Good fun!
I feel personally analyzed haha “kind of like a boulder harder to move…not flexible…likes chokes and strength based techniques” I’m actively working to combat that but being on bottom sucks ass
I'm 5ft 6, weighing at 180lbs (off season) and compete at 176lbs..i focused more on half guard due to my size and also my injury (torn meniscus) from the get go..i did learn the closed guard but i can't lock up my leg as it stresses my torn knee
My body type is a 47 year old 5’6 woman at 180 lbs… I don’t have quick movement, so few lbs short of kung fu panda….😬 usually going against women sometimes men half my age… working on conditioning (just started Muay Thai too)…I shoot for getting to guard working on rubber guard, or get to legs for knee bars, straight ankles or toe holds, also love to get to the back & or neck for chokes… 😉but competition seems to never work out the way I want, & end up with mothers milk & snagging an arm…I’m a newer blue belt 🔵 thanks for useful video appreciate it. ☝🏻👌🏻🌎🔥🫶🏻
im 6ft 3in 225lbs and my game centers around getting good positions and then suddenly being caught in a submission by guys who are bigger/same/smaller size
Im 5'11 183lbs and on my first day training Bjj kinda won against 3 withbelts, one was older than me, one 14 year old, and one about my age thick dude but short, i didnt knew what i was doing but when i did the sparring with the Last guy the coach screamed to my spaaring Partner to do somemoves so he can gets up, was kinda confused, i remember after the class i really broke because of the exhaustion, on that day i was dry fasting and did sparring against 4 guys what ended me hahaha, at the moment i hated beeing this close to a person, but a day later i just thought to learn more and do it again.
Im 5 foot 8 overweight and shorter limbs but ridiculously flexible. Im not that fast, but again, I can put my legs around people from many different positions.
Have you built a game based on your body type?
I definitely did! It just make sense to do so. I'm the 4th archetype so it doesn't make sense for me to do for example go for double legs often cause most guys are bigger and heavier than me. There are strategies that are more ad hoc for me. Great video Chasen!
Nice, I'm the same! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😀
Is 5’7 203 lbs (athletic build) fall into the last category or is there no category 😢
I was given a starting point, yeah
@@lacken-skill7999 I would say the last category! Tree stump club!
im 6ft 180 lbs. and my game is usually based around me getting submitted by smaller/bigger/same sized guys.
I suck. But its fun. so we keep going 😎🔥
We might be twins because that's word for word my experience😎😎

Big guys force me to work my guard and the small guys force me into passing which seems like backward etiquette to me. But in my experience big guys stand and small guys sit. Stand up with the big guys then.

To use a D&D analogy, whether you play the game as an elf, half-orc, halfling, or dwarf, it’s still D&D. Great video.
To use a card game analogy, doesn’t matter what deck you’re using if you don’t know how to shuffle your cards.
Yes! In RPGs certain races have better stats for different classes.
If you want to be competitive it's best to min/max based on the class you're playing. But it might get a little boring sticking to the meta because you're just playing to win instead of really enjoying and learning all aspects of the game.
Hahah! Correct!
5’8” 135, I definitely need a Halfling Game instructional.
Idk what that means.. but I like you for doing it! Lol
You sound like a stud and would be a nightmare to deal with (this is a compliment). Love the open mindness!
Fire plug gang!! 5’6” 170lbs. I almost always have to play open guard. Awesome content!
Glad to find my brother from another mother 😂
Heyyyyy we are one guy away from being able to power a 4 cylinder car lol😅
166cm 82 kg guy reporting in (5'6" 172lb). Need to learn a short mans open guard and need tips other than "learn butterfly". Keep in mind im a hobby powerlifter so Im quite strong, but slow.

5'9" 230 lb construction guy, no stripe white belt, my game is to try to make it 5 min without tapping
Me too😂
45 years old with a bad back (industrial accident about 15 years ago) limits low back and hip movement. 5’11’ 210lbs with orangutan arms. My game is survival at all cost, closed guard, reach out and pull you in. Fight for under hooks. Lock down. New blue bet still working on safe position but now starting to work on better escapes.
Great strategy and welcome to blue belt!
Have you thought about north south?

I am so glad I watched this video! I always thought that I "suck" at closed guard when in reality I may not be able to do it very well based on body type. I'll keep working on it though! It's just nice to know I am not the only one
5'6 short stubby legs. I try not to keep someone in closed guard. Attacking is tough. Sweep, get on top, stay on top
Smash brother I'm 5'11 and I'm 240 lol I usually go side control and kimura or wristlock

I'm jealous you’re built like a spider 😆
Same here ❤ arm drags back takes arm triangles heelnhooks berimbolos
Great video. I appreciated the breakdown of body-type styles and the warning about focusing on that too early.
Turns out you're right what you said in the beginning where I would naturally start to develop my style based on what works and what doesn't bc to my surprise my style is basically exactly as you described lol
I'm pretty much forced to attack every time (get to mount or the back asap)bc i don't have the luxury of sitting around in guard. My guard retention is good from open guard but terrible in closed guard -it's easy for the bigger guys to just pry me open. (Pause)
I never really thought of trying butterfly as a main tactic I tried it very early on as a no stripe but I couldn't really get the hang of it. Haven't really used it much as it isn't taught in our fundamentals classes but I'll definitely look into it more now!
I've recently realized armbars are something i can easily catch people with sometimes but my brain isn't used to the angles from bottom like that yet 💀
Sometimes i get myself in weird positions under big guys and end up doing some Craig Jones shit by accident cause I'm so flexible bottom side control to back take kinda shit
Thank you for the video coach
6ft 265lbs here, i'm a short and very stocky guy and the thing that has helped my skillset most recently is playing bottom, instead of my most effective game which is top deep water pressure, this is mostly good to do against people that i have a size advantage over to me, as it gives me more leeway to practice, doing this has won me competitions too, as i'm able to sweep bad positions better generally than most heavyweights, as they rely on the "who lands on top wins", i want to have an advantage over the people i compete against by improving my weakest area where they do not
6 ft isn't short my man. How often are you running into guys with a size advantage on you at 265??
Good stuff sir, thank you

6’5’ long limbed. Definitely a guard player. Makes closed guard and triangles much easier than my shorter partners.

U may be an exception lmoa
Probably want to play more of a Williams guard or butterfly half and look to drag their near arm with a 2on1 to get a good look at a backtake.
2 lessons learned
- body types play a big role in determining successful positioning.
6.8 215 skinny as a bean pole. Curious what people think I should be good at?
I'm pretty short with long arms and for some reason I'm pretty good at butterfly guard/shoulder crunch
Guillotines and D'arce chokes my friend!
I'm 6'4" and 180lbs. I abuse my lankiness without thinking. I don't prioritize body type, but I'm not fighting nature.
Favorites:
Sub - triangle
Sweep - balloon
Pass - longstep
There's a lot of moves with dumb labels, like the Kimura being a "big man" move.
Thank you for sharing! Sounds like you have a good system!
5'8 160lbs I've been doing jijutsu for 6 years. Taekwondo 3 years.
2 months. Japanese karate 26 years.
I’m a new white belt and I fit into that category of around 180 and about 6’. I have already begun to notice some advantage with having long legs. I think even longer than the average but it’s good to know I can be very versatile.
Great, thanks for the insights!
Im a hybrid of tall and thin + tall and thick. I love going for double legs and singles, and I love being on mount trying to get head and arm triangles. However I also love d’arce chokes and playing guard to go for triangles. Also armbars are hard due to long legs. Excellent video 👍
I’m a heavy guy 280 lbs 6ft I use a lot of side control and sweeps from half guard my main go to sub is Americana

Great video!
Are you going to make a return to training?

Interesting - not sure exactly which category I fall into: 5’9” 190 lbs (57 year old 3 stripe purple if that makes any difference 😂)…I try to model my game a bit after guys with similar body types like Saulo Ribeiro.
Saluo Riberio is a monster so good choice!
Only 2 of these body types ever face eachother and it's tall skinny vs short stocky

Hahah! Amazing sprit and welcome to blue belt! I'm glad the video was helpful! Thanks for checking it out!
When he described tall and thick I was laughing hard.. without thinking this is pretty much my game when I first started out

As a 5'8" 235lb dude who has been at it for almost 8 years I have next to zero full guard game.
im 6ft 3in 225lbs and my game centers around getting good positions and then suddenly being caught in a submission by guys who are bigger/same/smaller size
6’1 185 lean, long legs & average length arms
Understand the basic a little first then once u find the flow then learn both body type Jiu Jitsu and basic Jiu Jitsu
What's considered short then? At 5'7 I consider myself at the short end of average or the tall end of short and 150 lbs sounds super thin to me.
I'm 6'3 170 pounds in working on my triangle game and my guard passing but idk why I love playing guard, maybe cause I'm lanky and long.
185lb 5’9 blue belt.
Don’t know what my game is. Like a little bit of everything.🫠
Yes! Everything!
Im 5 foot 8 overweight and shorter limbs but ridiculously flexible. Im not that fast, but again, I can put my legs around people from many different positions.
I'm 6'4 300+and semi flexible white belt just days in.i just stay still if I don't know what to do witch us often.duh lol.
im 5'8' 150 lbs. am i considered tall and skinny or short?
Any guidance for 5ft 10 160IB 29 year old blue belt?
Im 6'2 360lbs, my game is entirely side control or mount, spam Kimura and Americana 😂 or head and arm choke
Tall and Thin & you described me perfectly lmfao. Almost too accurate.
