- Armies of Azeroth is a mod for Starcraft 2 that recreates the entire Warcraft 3 multiplayer experience in HD. Recently I was invited to take part in a first look pre-alpha gameplay session, which I happily accepted. I recorded the two games that I played (and lost) so I figured I'd share my experience with you all. I hope you enjoy this first impressions video. Man orcs standing upright looks so much better. Wish they did this in WoW, horde always has such bad back problems.

Warcraft 3 has a very specific "feel".
The looks & sounds help to feed the nostalgia however I hope the gameplay can match the awesomeness of that Warcraft 3 "feel"

i don't think this looks particularly wc3-esque. colours are too desaturated and the art style should be more angular, with greater contrast.
i hope they try to emulate the blocky collision in wc3, because blocks, surrounds & wall-offs are such an integral part of the meta & balance

Warcraft 3 was my life blood growing up. I must have put thousands of hours into it. I would love to see the community be revived!

you have a trial that is basiclly free 4ever you cant play some of the campaing but not all some of the features are locked but mods(arcade or how is it called)are free and you can enjoy them how much as you like

+Archra It doesn't matter if it's on arcade, mod only matters when you download manually custom maps or campaigns and launch them from editor or SC2Switcher.exe.
i already see an mistake the humans start off with 12 food total in warcraft 3 and in this mod they only have 10

2 things I would want from this, 1. the bonus lines from clicking units to many times (the spirits are very strong today!)
2. the randomly generated hero names, all I saw was "Pitlord" "Paladin" "Tauren Chieftain"
and one last note, THAT TAVERN SOUND, OH THE NOSTALGIA!

Nostalgia. War3 + Tft was one of the best RTS games. Glad the devs put their time and effort on this mod.
Pure passion and love for creativity and the game. They previously said they would release the assets they have made for other modders when it's released

I have been following this project for quite a while. Really happy to see how great the mod is...now I am just waiting for the night elves^^
Assuming this project is handled by more than 1 person.
I can't say nothing about the gameplay since I haven't played it.
Not saying it's not good work. Seems to be hell of a job.
But visually, it doesn't look very tasty.
Not that the tech is bad, or the assets aren't technically good, they're fine.
But the lighting and color-correction make the game look pretty flat, colors don't pop out like they did in the original WarCraft 3.
Also the models of the buildings lack exaggeration, they all stand straight and square rather than looking like they're squeezed out of the ground like a cartoon. Compare the human farm building between the two versions to see the difference in style.

oh wow! I didn't know there was a group of modders making this! That looks friggin awesome.Major props to the hard work these guys are putting into this. You can tell they really care about these kinds of games like we do.I don't play SC mp, due to me knowing I'll get my ass kicked, but I'm gonna start keeping an eye on this. Damn. This is so awesome! Now I can't wait.
Hope there willl be some changes compare to W3, Like taking out some useless abilities and replace with something could make more different strategies and later balance it, like FS could have some aura insted of worthless scouting area and many other...
For those who I suppose may be unaware, Blizzard has already given modders access to the full set of units/structures/effects from Warcraft 3 in the Starcraft 2 engine, completely redone with newer graphics. For an example, pop into Starcraft 2's Arcade mode and look for the game "Lordearon Strike".
Not sure if this mod is attempting to create better "HD" versions of those assets, but I feel like their time might be better spent using the Blizzard-provided assets in the SC2 Map Editor to re-create some WC3 games - perhaps even the full campaign, eventually.

Wasn't expecting this, and I am really glad to see it. Been following this mod for a while now, and really looking forward to a playable version this month. Warcraft 3 is still my favourite game of all time by far, and I really am excited to finally be able to play a properly working HD remake.
Seeing a Frost Wyrm in HD.. can hardly wait!

Cool video mate! I fell in love at once. It was a wish to come true to see a remake or a mod in HD of WC3 since i
have been playing the series since WC2, and dove more into in WC3 since 2002 (at a point my at clanmates and me held the rank 1 Eu 3v3 back in the day for quite a long time).
But i have to say , this is far more than i expected, the guys did a phenomenal job and cuedos to them. !

Yes you can highly likely change the hotkeys. Since it's being remade in the Starcraft 2 Editor.

I wonder if they will do the half done races only for campaign purpose in WC3 like Chaos Orcs, Naga, Satyr, High Elves, and Blood Elves. Not sure how they would be balanced at all since were just meant for campaign but would be cool if they put in those races eventually.
Are some models taken from heroes of the storm? the Mountain King looked just like Hots's Muradin.
If not, they should. Uther for Paladins, Lunara for Dryads, Sylvanas for the Dark Ranger, Brightwing for the Fairy Dragon, etc etc etc
Theirs also another WC mod on SC2 other then this one too, it includes alliance, horde, think undead, and also the burning legion as a races and has several maps. This I can't wait for either cause of original races but the other ones quite fun too.
Didn't Blizzard help out in designing models for this mod? I remember a SC 2 update that inconspicuously contained a lot of these WC3 models in its game files.

it would be realy epic if blizzard make a tournament on Armies of Azeroth with all the top players ex. Grubby , Moon etc.
What about the pathing and unit collision? Those are some of the most idiosyncratic things from wc3, and they're super important.
Well there is a lot that is going to have to be done for this but it would be interesting in the distant future if someone could tackle a simple campaign mode of this and use some new hd animations to breathe new life into the cinematics.

On the video we can see only Orcs and Human units... what about Undeads and Night Elves? Will they be playable?

I really hope that's not the final look for the HUD elf pictures. I know they have the giant ears, giant eyebrows that defy gravity, glowing eyes and whatnot, but they shouldn't look freakish either. I got a good look at the sorceress and she's not what she used to be. The old version she was relatively beautiful albiet with a bit too much make-up. It maybe looked unfinished compared to the archmage HUD picture. But it's not even alpha stage yet so give it some time I guess.
im actually sad that in warcraft 3, i was playing a building strategy game in a custom game, They are a few races that you can play Human, elf, orc and undead but why there is no Naga and blood elf race? But only in the campaign. :/

Okay, I'm hoping for a remake of Warchasers...
but make that scenario Third Person Shooter with StarCraft heroes to pick from on the player's end and only on the player's end while keeping everything else just as it was in the original. You can up the magic on the enemy side as much as you like.

I feel like magic vs. technology would be an excellent trope for dealing with the adventure genre, especially adventure that includes both sci-fi and fantasy.

So please show live gameplay footage of u playing this. Also, do u still have contact with the manager? If so, ask for the naga race to be added into the mod please. I loves playing them during the frozen throne campaign. And I know a lot of people would live to play naga wouldn't you? So please ask him if you could

I heard about this and it's pretty amazing what fans can pull together. In fact if you slapped Blizzards name on it, it's easy to think it's official :)
Although it would be nice if they did a warcraft 2 version as well but that's just my nostalgia.
This is the only way to get me to actually play starcraft instead of getting bored of it after the first campaign
